- Don't use a USB Hub, don't use USB 3, update your drivers, change your power settings, enable generic controller support in Steam or your launcher of choice. Make sure your PC isn't cutting power to the USB ports to save power, make sure your controller is properly enabled. damn i got it to work for my ps5 controller, go to add device on computer, and then hold the share button and the home button on the ps5 controller for a bit, the lights will start to flicker, and it will prob show up on add bluetooth device.

@@hudsonbruce898 if you have steam then go to big picture mode and there will be an option to connect the controller. it doesn’t work dor every game, but it well tell u if it does, for example there will be a controller next to games that support it, and a keyboard next to ones that don’t support it.
Never had any trouble until today. Can't get ANY controller to work on Windows 10 anymore. None of these fixed my issue. I can pair it via bluetooth or hook it up with a USB and it will show up in "Devices and printers" as wireless controller but it's not actually recognizing it. Xbox X, Ps4 or Ps5 controller doesn't work. What happened?
Edit- Ended up having to reinstall Windows10 with the media creation tool from Microsoft. It gives you the option to keep all your apps and files, so it was actually really simple. Fixed my controller problem.

Having the 'correct' controller cable to connect from controller to PC is something that cannot be understated.
Most cables especially longer third party cables don't transfer data and work correctly for recognition and updating on PC and are simply 'charging' only cables.
Wait what do u mean by data transfers ? Because my controller won’t work when I connect it to my pic it says “ usb device not recognized” and just won’t work and won’t turn on when I do connect it
@@lgotxjuice1176 yes that was my problem..the cable's I purchased previously were only charging cable's...Kontrolfreek have a long cable that does both data transfer and charging...most regular phone charge cable's work as does included cable's with your consoles but find way too short
nothing else in the video worked, but i changed my cable to the default PS44 cable i had and it worked. I was using a longer cable but it didn't work for me.

Thank you very much. My controller stopped working out of the blue while I was playing a game. Going to the device manager to adjust the power saving feature for the USB ports fixed the problem.
Thank you so much for this video. The generic gamepad that I ordered arrived today, and I thought I would have to send it back because steam wouldn't recognize it, but I am now rockin'.
Big fat THANK YOU for that quick fix! The hint at 5:00 to uninstall the drivers, then physicaly disconnect, restart pc and after fully booting reconnect the controller solved the problem. Then the driver will be drawn by the device and is now fully functional.

BRO! Cant thank you enough - was about to scrap my elite controller. Literally did everything uninstall-firmware-apps-reconfig-everything - for whatever reason going into windows settings + controller + diagnostic settings pulled my controller back into normal behavior. Literally was glitching out so hard, spamming y and couldn't get profile light to turn on at all or change- I still dont understand it but your in depth guide is a GAME changer. Ive hit every resource and your the only one that mentioned this option. Thanks a TON

@@nightwolf7yt i found one, you need a data transfer usb type c instead of a normal usb type c, i always thought my wires were fine, but its not if they work or not, its if it can transfer data from the controller to the pc.
Same - I bought a genuine, real MS 360 unit for £55... I get Be-Beep noise and.... nothing. My old £2.99 from the Chinese market thing is crap, but at least I can get it to work... after about an hour of setting up for ONE game..... Have to reset for the next... But why I cant just plug n play with a genuine MS controller is beyond me. I've been trying for 6 weeks - nothing.

You are a trooble shooting hero! My nintendo pro controller would suddenly disconnect while playing for about a minute and than reconnect again while it was plugged in. Disabling the powercuts to the USB ports and/or changing the USB power settings worked for me after I restarted my laptop. Thanks a lot!

For anyone having issues where your controller works but it glitches your screen and can't do certain inputs I tried this and it worked:
Go to steam > View in big picture mode > go to controller > go to desktop layout > Edit layout > apply NONE to all behaviors

Fixed mine. I just bought a Thrustmaster eSWAP S and...no go. Swapped to a USB in the rear of my puter and...WHAM! Game on. Thank you so much. I'm saving this video for my future headaches.

Windows doesn’t recognize that I’ve plugged it in at all. Switch pro controller. Works fine on the switch itself. Bluetooth works, but not wired. It reads Xbox controller just fine

This has been THE fix for controllers. Turns out updating steam turned off the settings to "Allow x,y,z controllers" and it had me Wigging out the past few days. BUT now I can actually play games with the bois once again. Thank you, and I'll be saving this in the back pocket for any of my friends that have similar issues

Don't know if anyone can help but I'm having issues with a standard ps4 controller, was playing and then suddenly it stopped working. Ran through all the steps in the above video but all I'm getting is when the controller is plugged in, a minor soft orange glow and then nothing, manually went through all drivers to check if they're up to date and the PC just wont even recognise that the controller is plugged in. I don't even have the icon in devices to delete and then re-add.

My issue is that ANY xbox controller that i try to connect keeps giving me a "try connecting your device again" but my playstation controllers work fine with bluetooth. Thank you so much, I tried playing on PC for the first time ever, wanted to play battlefield2042. I got a scuf controller to play on my PC, I tried it like 6 months ago and it didnt just plug and play like I thought, couldn't find scuf support or battlefield controller support anywhere. I tried getting it to work for like 6 hours over 3 days, super dumb and gave up.
I tried breifly last night, with the same outcome.
THEN found this video last night, worked through the steps, found that I had to "disable", restart, then "re-able" the controller, stupid dumb quirkiness. But then the controller worked perfectly afterward.

my controller connects via bluetooth perfectly and even in the Test in windows settings all the buttons and my joysticsk work flawlessly, but in games it's still as if i never even connected the controller, it just doesn't work... i dont understand what could be wrong if windows recognizes it but no games.

When I started the video, i had the random idea to flip the usb input cable on the joystick and that worked for some reason
sup dude, i think your a genius doing this ... *even some folks in game comunnities were like you may need a new device*.... 5:12 seems to have fixed my issue as the computer and device manager said the adapters and usb and drivers were up to date yet the controller wouldnt pair. so thx for going through each individual thing in relative order to troubleshoot this. ;p

Hey so I've tried all these methods and my controller will work but when i load cod like all of the buttons do different things. Such as my X and O inputs are flopped my triggers don't work at all, etc. etc. But its a brand new controller and I've had it with Xbox controllers and ps4 controllers but it still has the same issue. The thing is its only on Call Of Duty and other games it's fine.

Hi, thanks for your video kinda helped but I am still having the issue the it will plug in and when I enter the setup a game controller y won´t give me an option, like it knows it's connected, but it doesn't recognize it as a controller, it's not the controller since I've tried it with 2 different Dualshock 4 controllers and it isn't the drivers since I already tried that fix. I never had an issue with my dualshock when I just had a laptop. Now I have a pc… after three days I fixed a ground loop issue with my speaker system (plugging the 3.5 into my monitor fixed the gpu buzz, I didn’t even know there was a 3.5 on the back). AAAAND now I can’t freakin use my ps4 or ps5 controller on it. Ps4 controller gets random inputs without me touching it and the ps5 controller does one of three things: Doesn’t connect, connects and disconnects over and over at the speed of light, or stays on for 2 minutes then shuts off. My guy has a hundred controllers behind him, I pray to God you have the knowledge to save me from buying an expensive xbox controller and having to re learn its weirdass layout after having used ps4 controllers my whole life.
Edit: Well it’s working about as well as I think it will, no real issues except that the controller… idk, disconnects every once in a while? I only tested it on one game so far, Stray, and it seems to only do it when there’s a cutscene or something. It doesn’t really disconnect either, I think it just becomes unresponsive for a split second and immediately reconnects, which for Stray will kick me to the menu (like the in game pause menu, not the main menu or steam menu)

None of these fixes work, because when I plug in my controller nothing happens like nothing was plugged in. (I have never used a controller on my pc before btw)
Ps: I dont think my controller is an official xbox controller since it doesnt have the logo on the button, but it worked on my brothers laptop so I dont think that's the problem.

Hi, I've got my "Xbox 360 Wireless Controller via Play & Charge Kit" appearing properly in Device Manager, but when I run "Controller" it does not show up --> Any idea what that means?? FYI I tried everything you listed (different usb slots, drivers updated, power settings, disabled + restart + reenable), though I should mention my PC only has usb 3.0 slots. And no power seems to go to the controller.
Im having an issue where on my PS5 edge controller whenever im using the steam big picture mode for it whenever I press the right side of my touchpad it clicks options but when i check it in the controller button testing it doesnt do that is it too new for it to know what it is?
My Xbox One controller had stopped working on Windows 10 turned out I was using an older Micro USB cable and that was responsible for Windows 10 and Steam not recognizing it. Went back to the USB cable I was using prior and it's working again.

I have fantech GP13 controller
Issue: Controller needed to be restarted and disconnected every time I put my computer to hibernate or sleep and controller needed needed steam to use controller inside games
Fix: I plugged the controller in the back of my pc instead of the front usb ports that come with the pc case
Result: My controller works fine after waking my pc from hibernate or sleep .Also, I no longer need steam launcher to make my controller works in games. It is finally plug and play.

@Blahq Sage Media find a fix? Just bought my first gaming laptop and have no clue what I'm doing. My xbox controllers are wired and work in the xbox app but if I launch literally any game nothing works but the home button will still work and pop up the options and stuff. I've tried games across 10 years and nothing. Works just fine with my xbox I just don't get it.
@@josephconaway8259 The only fix I found for Cod was when I wanted to play with controller I would choose controller as the option to use then unplug my keyboard. Once I saw the controller worked normally I would then plug my keyboard back in.

Hey bro did you get it to work? I got two generic ps2 like controllers which do not work in games but they do work in just big picture mode. It works in CS2 but the sensitivity and controls are way off. It doesn't work on any other game. How can I fix this?

None of these worked. My micro usb when I plug it into my headphones will charge my headphones but when I put my controller in, it makes that noise when you plug something in and says it’s not recognized I have done everything on your list and it still does not work.
Then when I plug in a diffferent micro usb, it does not even register that there is a usb in the port. It still charged the headphones and ps4 controller, but does not say usb device not recognized, it doesn’t show anything, it’s like the usb it not even plugged in, minus that it is charging.
I had this problem where my bluetooth would pick up the DS4, but when i tried to play a game it would be laggy, not register inputs, etc. The solution for me was finding the bluetooth antenna that came with my PC/Motherboard. It has two coaxial connections, plugged them into the back of my PC, and now I can play from my mailbox. Hope this helps.
Facing the same issue with my EvoFox Elite X and everytime I have to unplug my dongle and restart my system to get it working again

I did everything! My controller works everywhere, shows up in steam, on windows, in the troubleshoot area shown, works on big picture menus, except when I actually play a game! It is so disheartening. I have no idea why it all of a sudden did this. Have been unable to play games for a few days and have spent way too much time trying to figure this out. Came out of nowhere.

I've done pretty much everything. I've removed the Xbox controller from the regedit directory and even device manager. It still shows up in bluetooth settings so IDK what to do. Literally nothing I've done has allowed me to remove and re-pair the dang thing

My controller has an "analog" button that doesn't work and it's driving me nuts. It's a generic seisa controller. I tried EVERYTHING and it doesn't work. The right stick acts as the action buttons (a, b, c, d, )

Okay so my issue is: I have a PowerA Xbox One (I think) controller that stopped working after I got a new keyboard "Razer Huntsman V2 Analog"
The little white LED is on, and there's only ONE button that's functional, the screenshot button. 😅
Even when I go in the menu to test the controller, it shows that it has only one button?
I hope there's someone who got a fix for this.
BTW I'm on Windows 11.
