As a Vegas resident I always told myself I'll eventually see one of his shows. He's always here, right? Never got around to it. To this day it's one of my biggest regrets.
And years later, those words are still truth tbh because Conan will retire as the best late night talk show host of our generation (to switch to hbo max)
Conan O'Brian is the last of a dieing breed of what a REAL talk show host is. He's funny, witty, intelligent, and most importantly he shows respect to all of his guests. And he does it with class.
If the guest roast him, he just let it go... if the guest rant, he just let it go... if the guest tells a good/interesting story, he just let it go.... and most important, he just add the exact information to let the interview go well, without getting the spot away from the guest

Don seems like a guy who wouldnt tolerate nonsense. He would go crazy on Letterman and Jay Leno, because these people have too much ego in their head so its easy to attack them with his style of comedy. I guess he saw that Conan was genuine from the beginning and never strayed from his personality even until he made it as top talk show host. Anybody would respect that, because that is very rare in hollywood.

I just came here from an interview with Leno that Rickles did in 95, and.... wow. A night and day difference. Both clips should be used together to teach the do's and don'ts of talk show interviews. Everything Leno did wrong, Conan did right. Conan put the spotlight on Rickles, and let him control the timing and atmosphere, and stayed humble the whole time. All Conan had to do was mention a topic, and let Rickles handle it from there. Masterful job.

This is true. On the positive note, I think she witnessed him enough. Rickles reached imo, his pinnacle of success as a stand up comic in the 70s. She died in that decade. Later in life, he was known as a much older comic, even though he was getting his success in Casino and Toy Story. That was his main brand to sell, his stage act, even if he had an Emmy Award winning documentary, Mr. Warmth: The Don Rickles Project, and he sold that act damn well, and plenty of comedians still highly respected this man. What I wonder regardless is if he sold more tickets in these generations now that everyone has gotten an appreciation for him.

I'll mirror a lot of what's been said here. Conan is top class with the comedic guests. Straight away gives Don the room to make jokes and then after that leads him right into his wheelhouse of conversation -- the old days and the legends he was surrounded by. Excellent.
What a legend. Incidentally, Rickles's friend, Bob Newhart, appeared on Conan's podcast a couple years ago at age 90 and is still imo the funniest guest who played off Conan's personality the best.
He was alive for it. You didn't hear him delve much into controversy because he respected both men. He had class. He was with two crazy showbiz personalities. He was with Johnny Carson, a complex son of a bitch, and not to mention Sinatra. He would make jabs at them about little things people would be scared to address with them. He was such a well loved personality. Sinatra loved his brutal honesty. So he did stuff similar if he commented about Leno and Conan.
After having watched Don on Leno and Conan back to back...I can say this in all honesty...Don doesn't like Leno...and he does like Conan. I can see y Letterman had such faith in him. Conan is the best of his generation on Late Night. I can see y.
In the few snippets that he actually manages to be semi-serious, you can see what a kind and warm soul he actually was in real life - the polar opposite of his comedic persona.
I got ro see Rickles live when he was on Channel 5 in San Francisco. I was 13. That daily program brought on Redd Foxx, Moms Mabely, Bill Cosby & many other comedians of the time. They would give out free tickets on the street & at libraries. An incredible time in 1965.

My dad was a big Irish cop who didn't take crap from anyone. Don Rickles had him onstage in Vegas and just laid into him, at one point dancing around him like an Indian about to sacrifice a settler. Very un pc. My dad was crying with laughter and often recalled this as one of the high points of his life. Thanks Mr. Rickles for making my dad laugh.
One of the best shows Ive ever been to in Las Vegas was Don Rickles. He was able to insult your race and religion and you would thank him.

I saw Mr Rickles in Montreal in the early 80s. It was the most fun I've ever had. He was so good and a real sweetie.
