If there's less friction, there will be less wear. That's just the way things work. Functionally, it's not just easy bends. It's the ability to do smooth vibrato and slow bends. Rough things are unpredictable.

+Nonya Bizness Oil provides a boundary layer between the two parts. There is no such layer between the frets and the strings. The higher Mohs rating wins in that case. But, without polishing the tarnish off, you actually end up with an abrasive between the strings and the frets. And harder to bend is still harder to bend.

Great video! What would you recommend upgrading on a new PRS SE Mark Holcomb? I just ordered the Pure Tone jack and told them where I saw their product and why I was buying their product. It's a shame they did not sponsor this Axe Sharpening. but they had very nice things to say about you. maybe in the future they will sponsor another build. I know it's only a $6 dollar part but you gave them $200 worth of advertising maybe more. I am not a marketing guy. LOL Please let me know your thoughts on these Items from PRS for my guitar. Nut change 4204 wide-fat/thin, Pickup surrounds one set black and one set ivory (just to see) ACC-4261-b and 4261-Ivory. and the bell knobs in black 4246. I think that's all she needs except I am going to use Hipshot locking tuners on it.

Great makeover for this guitar, Phillip!! Ever used Nicsand? It’s great for high gloss polishing-it’s a 10,000 grit lotion. Also, Music Nomad has a great fret polishing kit called Frine-it’s affordable & works great too. I’ve used the Frine polish to remove swirl marks from pickguards & guitar finishes.
I’ve used the Kluson KEDPL 380-1 locking tuners on one of my Gibson Les Pauls. They’re great & fit the footprint of the original Gibson Deluxe tuners perfectly.

Seconded on their polish. Idk if I've ever used the fretboard conditioner. I used to use this stuff that came in a see thru red bottle. And I can't remember the name to save my life. Getting older SUCKS!!!

Thank you for the video. I think the upgrades were well planned, and would be exactly what I would want. I really like the locking tuners on my guitars that have them. I like being able to fine tune the intonation, and the coil splits add some nice versatility, so you could do almost any type of gig with this one guitar. If I ever need to solder something, I'll try to remember this video, as well.

Awesome ! I built my own guitar with my dad. It's an HSH strat that has 3 splittable humbucker, and I had difficulties with wiring because splitting one or two is ok, but having a schema that splits 3, it's a whole other story :D
Also, I installed old style humbucker (Seymour Slash signature, same wire style as the one demonstrated on soldering tip) on my epi les paul (they sound great, go for it if you hesitate), and I have to admit I did the mess you talk about with the soldering. It didn't want to stick, and I ended up adding more and more solder. In the end, I succeeded, but definitely wish I could watch this video before. Anyway, you won a new subscriber, I love your work :)

Hey Phil! Is there any difference between coil tap and split?

    • @micahman10001
      @micahman10001 6 років тому +3

Sagi Dash Yes there's quite the difference. Although my name isn't Phil I hope you don't mind my answering. So basically coil split, like it is mentioned in the video splits a humbucker into two separate coils. Essentially creating a single coil. Coil tap is quite a bit different. In coil tap it will bypass a few of the wraps around the pickup. Therefore lowering the resistance, so more output. Coil split=single coil. Coil tap=louder humbucker.

Really loved this video. It can often be a fear to upgrade the old girls we own, especially out of the fear of change. But I think when you make wise and informed decisions when doing so, you don't lose the feeling of the old girl, you improve it. It brings new life into the relationship.
Wonderful job Phil, looks and sounds amazing!

What are you doing fondling this guitar...it is sacred to the asses, how have you come to hold this example of an eclectic eccentric artifact of space/time to be beholden by only those chosen few who have paid the fee upon the man who walks before UA-cam and hearkens the heralds like an angel who sings:
"BUY MY LESSONS and SEE me GOOF....Upload per day will get you TOO!!"

Hi im looking for a good beginner and high quality electric gitar for 1000-1200 dollars. What would you recomend? Want without a tremolo and looking for more of a blues sound. Looking at fenders made in mexico or japan or usa Also the yamaha revstar RS820CR and Yamaha RSP20CR and the ibanez prestige and premium lines
but all the choices make it so hard to find the best one for the money and the best quality one.

infoowetrust, basically all he has left from the original is the wood. No tone there. There's nothing to see. Except the green finish makes it sound a little bit greener.

I’m a firm believer in don’t try and improve a tone you love. Having the split coils on a guitar like that is pointless. Just pickup a strat if you want that single coil sound. It does that sound much better. I don’t do buckers in strats either for the same reason (well I just hate that muffled sound -single coils forever).

Great video, as usual. However, Dunlop strap locks are complete garbage. They are not safe, to protect your expensive instrument from falling off the strap. Those tiny little ball-bearing cam locks will let go, releasing the strap from the guitar. It has happened to me, and there are horror stories, of broken guitar necks etc., all over the 'net. Schaller strap-locks are the best that money can buy.

PRS guitars often sound too brittle and bright to me. I guess thats why I preferred the original pickups in this guitar. They were more low end friendly.
