I am a retired LEO with 32 years " on the job" & a natural bodybuilder. It is hypocritical for an LEO to be using steroids most likely obtained illegally & then arrest someone else for using/possessing controlled substances. Police physical exams include urinalysis for opioid but not steroid use due to the costs of the tests. Some guys get their gear legally by submitting a blood sample to an out of state doctor for a script via internet ( no office visit) who is in it for the money. That makes it just legal so they can circumvent the law or they know an MD that will hook them up. The hypocrisy is disappointing. I agree with your comments about the brotherhood code of silence & meat head mentality of many LEO's. Keep up the great videos Nick.

In the mid 80s, before steroids was a controlled substance. I was one of the biggest distributor' s of anabolic steroids.
The largest group of purchasers were police officers, second was fire fighters.
They would come to my house in uniform in there police cars to purchase steroids.
I knew a lot about steroids back then, I knew how to take them safely and how much to take.
These cops were taking way more than what was needed to achieve the same results. most of these officers were a little crazy.
After the government made anabolic steroids a controlled substance, I Refused to sell to them. Man they were really pissed off. Some of them were right in the middle of a cycle. I'm sure there testecal's shrunk to nothing.
This was more that 30 years ago. I can only imagine how many are taking this shit now.

I'm from The Netherlands and I never heard of a law about being arrested for looking like you take steroids. I don't think theres any law like that in any EU country.

its not necessarily the muscles, although any extra body mass can cause issues, its the way steroids affect the heart directly. the heart is a muscle too. a very VERY delicate one, thats not really meant to grow in those ways.

Great video Nick. There are a few other factors to consider as well. First, in the 90's most police departments did not have well established random drug testing programs. This allowed for illegal use of steroids without any consequences. Things have changed drastically since then. All agencies nationwide are now required to conduct random drug testing throughout the year, to include steroids. Obviously, there will always be a few cases of cops that "slip through the cracks" but most of us don't want to risk losing our jobs when that random test comes around the corner. I can't speak for all agencies but I have been in mine for 9 years and I have been tested every single year without notice of any kind, sometimes multiple times in one year. Needless to say, I am not interested in steroids at all but just wanted to mention that there are things in place to maintain checks and balances on cops, at least since I became one.
I also agree that cops shouldn't enforce a law if they are the ones breaking it. It takes away the credibility of that officer and sets a double standard that shouldn't be present in law enforcement. As far as enforcing these laws, I have to say that this is mostly a Federal thing. Most local police departments or city police do not look for steroid abusers or dealers. We simply have bigger crimes and citizen issues to deal with. These types of crimes are mostly enforced by Federal agencies like the DEA and the like.
Finally, thanks for all your great videos. I just wanted to make the point, at least from my experience, as to how I see our law enforcement community and its relation to steroids. Of course, there are some cops that use steroids but it's only a matter of time before they get caught for being stupid. All it takes is a bad incident where drug testing is mandated and you're history (cops get drug tested after shooting incidents, car accidents, and anything else that might become a liability for the department they work for). This may or may not be done nationwide but I know in my county it is standard procedure. By the way, probable cause is not needed in these cases. You have to consent to the random testings and mandated testings upon getting hired. Ronnie should have been tested and at least fired because of his double standard, although I doubt he ever arrested anyone for steroid use lol.
When I was in high school there were coaches that offered steroids to certain football and basketball players. They would go to sports medication doctors. Even heard a story that someone had their 50-year-old father submit a blood sample, so they could say a 17-year-old had low testosterone levels. They would also use products from veterinary medicine.

The NYPD gives random drug tests without notice. When you come to work that's when you find out that you have to go for your drug test that day and if you get tipped off somehow and decide to call in sick, they're coming to your house. They don't automatically test for steroids during that test because the test is expensive and there are about 40,000 cops. Even if a cop called internal affairs and said that another cop is getting huge and he thinks he's on steroids, they won't test that person. Now if a cop called internal affairs and stated that he walked passed a cops open locker and noticed what appeared to be a hypodermic needle in the locker and he noticed that the cops been getting huge, they're gonna do an investigation and if they feel it could be steroids, you're getting tested. I know of rookie cops who have gotten fired for using testosterone boosters without a prescription. They even put out a list of banned supplements because they could show up as a false positive on a steroid test. One of those were jack 3D. It's funny how people think that cops don't rat on other cops. They do rat, they do it anonymously, just ask someone from internal affairs.
Cops also tell us that there aren't any quotas to meet.. I would trust a black mamba not to bite me before I trusted a pig not to lie to me.

The law you mentioned isn't the Netherlands, I'm sure it's one of the Scandinavian countries, I think either Norway or Denmark. There was a story a few years back about Tony Freeman being caught up in it all when he visited.

Drug-tested for what exactly? most steroids ( arround 90%) are naturally produced by the body ( Testosterone for example ), thus the quantity you inject when using steroids is much higher than what your body produces naturally .
Therefore you can't identify a steroid user with a blood test in most cases .

Depending on your state, Possession is a misdemeanor. If you got caught with a vial of test and some dbol, chances are you would get misdemeanor charges. If any. However if I got caught with 15 bottles of test and a thousand pills, They would push intent to distribute. But the truth is steroids aren't considered a "priority" to cops considering the heroin epidemic among other things that are a huge issue in my area.

That's not true. It depends what you do and how you do it, and your lifestyle around it. Plenty of MMA fighters who have to fight in weight classes do certain steroids and it's become a bigger issue lately, even in smaller organizations. I'm just saying, steroids != getting huge. They certainly can, but don't have to.
I think his point was that someone as big as Coleman isn't as functional in real-world situations as someone smaller. All that muscle both slows you down to some degree and sucks up a lot of oxygen, reducing your stamina.
When I first clicked on the video, I thought it was gonna be about that, tbh. I wouldnt mind physically enhanced cops (so long as theyre actually doing their job). The problem is, trenbolone (which im guessing is one of the culprits at hand) on its own tends to cause shortness of breath, that along with the fact that it makes you massive (so more O2 required for your excessive amounts of muscle), and you get an individual who will be almost out of breath before he even starts running. How many successful persecutions did Ronnie Coleman and the likes have? Very likely, zero, not without pulling out a gun atleast.
Having to pull out a gun so that the culprits stop on their tracks, along with a possible boost in misjudgement due to the very well known 'roid rage', and the chances of someone getting shot without need increase. Would this increase in likelyhood be noticeable? I dont think we will ever know, but it sounds logical that it was and still is a reality for some cops.

Laws shouldn't be enforced unless they are needed. Steroid use is at the bottom of the list of problems in the US.
I know a Boston cop that got suspended 45 days (for steroids) after a random drug test.. happened March 2008. They do get popped on occasion.
I am in Canada and during the application process, candidates are asked if they partake in illegal drugs and you will be tested. If you test positive you are not going to get hired. Mind you that does not safeguard against the potential that an officer on the force who wants to try to add to their safety may think somehow that this added strength, power, endurance and in some cases, healing more rapidly in recovery from injury or just training will not go out and get steroids for personal use.... but you can always be tested. Training is a great idea, but this type of method may be a short term gain that can end up allowing an officer to take 3 steps forward only to take 10 steps backward.

I worked as a firefighter for a very long time and nearly all the younger guys I worked with used steroids, myself included. Quite honestly, it really helped with the job, both strength and recovery wise...but with that said, you had to be smart and reasonable with using them. As long as it wasn’t seriously impacting your health or your ability to do your job, no one in the department would question it whatsoever...I’m assuming it’s similar within police departments.

Im a cop and most departments do random drug test. There was a few officers in my department who got fired for steroids.
Normally companies don’t drug test for roids. I was a fireman and there was a lot of guys I worked with were openly taking things. But they passed drug testing because that’s not what was tested. My problem, is Colman being 300 pounds. How on earth did he ever pass his 6 month PT test that officers are required to take. I don’t see him running his 2 mile run in under the time limit. And that maybe one of the contributing factors that led to him retiring early from the department.

Retired cop here. When I first came on in 82 our Department did not drug test. I knew a few guys that were taking steroids. They got around the illegal part by going to a doctor up in LA and getting a prescription. Evidently, he was the guy the pros and LAPD cops were going too. Once our department started random drug testing, that shit pretty much ceased. Ran across a few obviously roid rage incidents on the job. Obviously not a good idea to have an armed person in authority using steroids.
Our department drug tests all of us and we get fired on the spot for failure and I have had co workers to fail and be arrested on the spot....so I don't understand that....

I've been a cop for 12 years and can say that I've never seen anyone charged for just using steroids. The only time I've seen steroids involved in a charge is when a drug dealer has been busted for trafficking something like cocaine, meth, heroine etc, and after the warrant to search their residence is conducted large quantities of steroids were also found so charges for that are added to the laundry list.
Another great video. One other thing: RC was not the only police officer to use steroids--I don't claim to have statistics, but they would definitely give you an edge in that line of work. I don't really have an opinion about the steroids. Each of us chooses for ourselves. Steroids are a personal choice. I think personal choices should be legal. I also think we all should try to follow the law---I hope they change the laws around drug use someday. Steroids are prevalent in a lot of places, not just bodybuilding. I think as long as everyone knows that they are addictive in the sense you achieve a different, substance-dependent physical state that can have significant, sometimes really unpleasant side effects--as long as everyone is aware of what they are getting themselves into, it's all good.

Nah, the roid rage argument is mostly bullshit. There's only a handful of compounds that cause any significant amount of aggression. Things like tren, deca, and anadrol. Testosterone doesn't cause that much aggression at all.
The Netherlands doesn't have that rule, you can take them and possess them but you aren't allowed to sell them. I think sweden and norway have the rule your talking about.

im mixed. in one hand it would be easier to tackle criminals but its also very hypocritical that they can arrest steroid user while being on them themselves. roid rage would also be an issue
As a law enforcement officer I have never been subjected to drug testing random or otherwise. A lot of this has to do with the fact that law enforcement officers are considered government employees and there is a large legal distinction in some states between drug testing government employees and employees in the private sector. The few instances where Ive seen case law on the subject state that government employees are afforded a more solid protection under the relevant states constitution as far as privacy rights which are tied in to random drug testing. In these cases the government entity employing the person would be required to show probable cause that the persons job performance was sub par or that they were a safety risk before the person could be subjected to a drug test as part of an investigation..

This is a great topic and I can say that as a retired peace officer myself that steroids where being used in Northern California in the 80's by many cops including myself who worked on the street and in the State of California prison system before they where made illegal in the penal code. This was the time before weights were made illegal in the State California prison system and even before Arnold was California's Governor! When part of a cops job was to protect others including themselves they would use every drug or supplement available to come out on top as the winner! I'm not sure about other states but during that time in California there where a lot of cops who wanted to do everything possible which included monthly trips to Southern California to buy steroids from those who smuggled them into California from Mexico! As I recall there was no specific law that made them illegal so even when my job included the possibility of fighting others most cops including myself would do what ever was possible to protect themselves and others when the job most likely would require physical altercations with others who where most likely using them! In my experience it was not done just to look good or for any other excuse but for self protection! I'm sure there where others using them just to look good but the cops I worked with especially in the prison system used them because of how big inmates would get on the weight pile in the prison system in those days! Anyways that was what I experienced back then and my guess is that it's probably close to the same as it is currently these days because most cops want to use everything that is possible to help them win when the time comes to fighting during their daily duties, although weights have been taken away from most prisoners in California's prison system I'm sure there are always the possibility of more steroids being smuggled in with all of the other drugs smuggled into the prison system on a daily basis for cash!!

Depends on of its responsible use or not. Take one ibuprofen and your headache goes away. Take a bottle of ibuprofen and you die. Same applies to steroids trt with occasional blast and Cruze is one thing, taking everything you can get your hands on all at once is another.

My answer is that it should be illegal for any cops to be taking substances that alter behavior be it mellowing them out, or can cause side effects like rage, psychotic breaks, depression, etc. Arguably same for some if not all military, doctors, etc.. Basically if you are responsible for other people's lives, and especially if your job is to carry a gun and have authority over someone else you should be drug tested regularly and fired if using any substances that have those effects/side effects.
Police officers may not snitch on each other but there is an Internal Affairs department that is meant to deal with things of this nature and corruption, etc.
