Groundbreaking, and to think it was practically 2 decades ago... its not just the chops, it’s the fact I’ve never heard anything like it before or since with this much raw power. Pioneers of sound, so happy and appreciative that this was written and performed by human beings in my lifetime
Frederik and Hacke both loved Mats @ morgan in their younger days, part of the way that structure came about.....Agren was already big on using his ffoot with each note hit that's incredibly tricky to get, but when you do you realize it's within 4/4. There's theory that disputes this but when I learned to play that type of pattern I still hear 4/4. Anyway, Morgan Agren was very influential to them and they just started doing it but with Metal.
you know your favorite part as a drummer is how he connects all the double stroke rolls into the cymbal to sync up with those stabs towards the end of the piece
I appreciate a lot that he's willing to play the part of all 3 drummers on the current tour, all on his own. You can tell some of those "hyper" blast beats are not exactly his cup of tea but boy, what a musician.
Thank you for this, I've come back to this jam after decades and it's always so fresh, now I can listen to this exact version on my bike commute to work
Definetly one of my favorite videos on youtube. The amount of music in this short clip is amazing. The drummer is such a badass. Also, Fredrik Thordendal is my influence in guitar. \m/
I'll never forget the first time I saw this. The end snare bits had me laughing out loud. I couldn't believe what he was doing, but there he was, doing it very well! It was another one of those moments of : "LOOK WHAT IS POSSIBLE!!"
This clip are from a swedish program at UR chanel. I saw this when they sent it. Jimmie Ågren, brother to Morgan. Also play music, ("strange" blues) but on guitar. Check him out. 😉
I’m obsessed with 5:12 when the rhythm morphs into smashing quarter notes on the crash, stomping eighth notes on the hi hat and the kick+snare doing whatever the fuck. Very Haake-esque moment.
I really have to disagree with Tony Royster and Pridgen, they are great, and I love hearing them play, but it terms of skills, taste aside, they aren't this good.
04:15 is kinda similair to the end riff of Phantoms, in terms of rhythm, that's why Thomas said it would be very hard to play live, specifically the end part at 05:12.
Where did he say this? Got a link? Phantoms my favourite track from new album, but can definitely see why there's almost no drum covers of it (that I've seen yet) on UA-cam 😂 just insane
Whenever I see this, I always imagine they sold their souls to the devil for their musical talent and unbeknownst to us they are actually battling each other with their improvisational powers trying to throw each other off and see what they got and whether they can keep us with each others mad timing. What even is my mind?
Me too! In Sweden, taping it to vhs when it was first aired in 1998 or something. I had been playing drums for little more than a year and couldn't believe what I was watching.
It looks like it's to mute the top strings for when he's not soloing. When he is, he probably reaches up and snags the tape between his knuckles and hangs onto it with his picking hand. Then, when he's finished, back onto the guitar it goes.
@@larsberglund yes i know i can see where they probably drew inspiration but theres only so many riffs you can come up with in an incredibly dissonant minor scale that its bound to happen aha
At the end Fredrik struggles to keep a straight face at Morgan's drumming. These 2 dudes are on another level
Oh yea. I saw this like 5 years ago and learned how to feel the groove in my guitar playing.
Still one of the greatest drum performances ever!!!!
Yes. Still underrated...
I seem to return to this video over and over and over again and each and everytime my mind is blown. Tight, crazy, innovative, genius...
I don't understand music from a technical standpoint but I also always return to this song. It brings joy to my ears!
This is the best quality so far, I have watch this both since UA-cam was a new thing on the web. Many thanks to the uploader.
You should listen to the whole song then, 40 minutes of pure genius
Me too. Once every 6 months
Genius is an understatement
These guys are locked in like prisoners
Still the best video on UA-cam after all these years
Fredrik’s face is priceless, he can’t believe what he’s hearing!!!
Thank you Swedish people!!! For unleashing Agren and Fredrik into our ears!!! From Philippines with love!!! MABUHAY KAYUNG NAGMAMAHAL SA MUSIKA!
Varsågod

this was incredible!!!
Seeing Fredrik with a wide smile on his face is not usual, but he is having the time of his life playing with Morgan here.
For 15 years I've come back to this performance over and over. Brutiful!
Listening Meshuggah : this Metal is different
Listening Fredrik Solo : WTF, this is an extraterrestrial music
After over a decade I can't watch this video without a sh!t eating grin and even tearing up; both musicians are so connected.
the satisfaction on fredrik eyes says it all, this stuff is not getting old, amazing!
Im just now seeing and hearing this better quality video of this performance for the first time, incredible.

yes sir
This is one of my favorite jams on tv by Fredrick and Morgan.
More recognition for Morgan please, he is on youtube if you guys did not know.
Morgan is amazing on Devin Townsend last record "Empath". Can't wait to see him on tour.
Im glad you wrote that. Had no idea he played on that. Gotta listen now hahah
I appreciate a lot that he's willing to play the part of all 3 drummers on the current tour, all on his own.

@D B Morgan Ågren - drums ("Genesis", "Sprite", "Why?", "Borderlands", "Curious Gods", "Empath", "Summer")
Samus "66Samus" Paulicelli - drums ("Genesis", "Hear Me", "There Be Monsters", "Gulag", "Middle Aged Man", "Total Collapse")
Anup Sastry - drums ("Genesis", "Spirits Will Collide", "Evermore", "Borderlands", "I Am I", "Silicon Scientists", "Here Comes the Sun!", "King", "The Waiting Kind", "Singularity")
FYI This melody is on Spotify now under Mats/Morgan
Thanks man. Awesome to have that available to listen to off UA-cam
Thank you for this, I've come back to this jam after decades and it's always so fresh, now I can listen to this exact version on my bike commute to work
This is so insanely good, I'm surprised at the view count. This needs millions of views...
I don't listen to much metal, but I really enjoyed this. It's nice to broaden the horizon and learn from a variety of sources.
You can hardly call this metal. It's a metal guitarist, yes, with a fusion drummer but you can't categorize either of them so easily.
@@dennislindqvist8443 its literraly djent so its metal
@@mimipastemps3415 it wasn't djent when they made this though
Can't wait for the Agren documentary release! This is excellent.

i have no idea why it took so long for me to find this in a decent quality video... THIS IS AMAZING
great performance!!! masterclass of polyrthm !!
This clip always gets me moister than an oyster
You're one gifted individual, haha!
Ah, I see you’re a man of culture as well
I'll never forget the first time I saw this. The end snare bits had me laughing out loud. I couldn't believe what he was doing, but there he was, doing it very well! It was another one of those moments of : "LOOK WHAT IS POSSIBLE!!"
Maybe you should credit SVT (Swedish national public television) for this? This was not recorded for vic firth!
I wonder if Morgan is using Vic Firth in this video
Some of the best music known to mankind
This clip are from a swedish program at UR chanel. I saw this when they sent it.
Jimmie Ågren, brother to Morgan. Also play music, ("strange" blues) but on guitar. Check him out. 😉
4:05 onwards is probably the best rythm ever created by a human (if he is human at all)
Dude do you know what part of the album that's from? Or if it's even in it hahaha cause I can't find it :( want to learn this version on guitar
I’m obsessed with 5:12 when the rhythm morphs into smashing quarter notes on the crash, stomping eighth notes on the hi hat and the kick+snare doing whatever the fuck. Very Haake-esque moment.
This Is absolutely insane 💥
Mind-blowing musicianship and creativity!
5:02 ZEERRKEERRRSmode :)
If Tomas Haake ever gets sick, Morgan Agren is your dude!
creativity aside, i can name 3 drummers in the history of drummers who can even begin to match Morgan
+SinisterSkip I will never understand what the hell is going on there...they guy's obviously lost his mind...nuts.
+Adrian Ellgren I can only really think of one, Matt Garstka, in terms of pure unbridled skill, those two are off the charts.
I really have to disagree with Tony Royster and Pridgen, they are great, and I love hearing them play, but it terms of skills, taste aside, they aren't this good.
matt garstka couldnt hold marco minnemann's gear....
Thank God they put this up with nice quality
seriously the best video on youtube ever!!!
That guitar tone is absolutely faceripping.
Straight through a JCM 900. I think they're less underrated these days in 2020, but not enough players talk about them still IMO.
@@AlexRamosDrTaz is that an amp?
This is one of the performances of all time
Still one of the coolest videos on UA-cam
toki you killed it ;)
Morgan Ågren is amazing... I can't think of any other way to put it...
"Where´s one?"
Fredrik is controlling Morgan with his brain.
Well....i think is the other way around dude!!
@@carlosalbertogomez1391 its the fuckin opposite
That's why Fredrik is smiling "yeah dance you little puppet" and Morgan looks like he's struggling to free himself
Kinda disrespectful to the immense talent of Morgan...
Well done you can copy and paste someone else's comment .. twat.

Iconic jam
This is absolutely insane! Classic. Get this on iTunes Music, holy crap!
2:20 my face just melted
Love it!
Close-up of the time signature at 2:11
4/4.... not that surprised about it. :D
4/4 shuggah does em too
it was not 4/4 all the way through. just because he's counting straight 8th notes with his left foot doesnt mean its in 4/4.
0:56 so simple and so brutal!!! MAXIMUM HEADBANG
Mind blown
Interesting fact: Both Haake & Agren were born on 13th July!
the whole album ep thing is just intense. get it!
NoEasyFeet where??? i want this EP? how? NOW! :)
Phenomenal
Such a great thing to see in such great quality

What even is my mind?
Agreed :)
The original that's been shot around from years ago was strangely awesome.
BOROMIR AND GARFUNKEL PLAY ROCKBAND.
Shit he does look like Boromir. Never noticed that before.
They was a before and an After. I was there. Like the Beatles, a revolution.
Me too! In Sweden, taping it to vhs when it was first aired in 1998 or something. I had been playing drums for little more than a year and couldn't believe what I was watching.
All of this without either player using ear buds for a click track. This is amazing.
1:37 gets me everytime
Down scale, like blues
With slides, create awareness about
Double kicks at the right time..
It's pure magic kingdom
Anyway, I like this kind of drum and bass.
masters!
like it!!
what snare is it? sounds amazing
Hey put some credits up. This is taken from Swedish television.
Hehe. exactly!
Yes Morgan ! friendly ! '
ok then, that was just amazing.....not much else to say
Que relíquia man ❤️
What damage these guys do if you're crazy 🤘
Goddamn.
This is the best history of djent metal world since 1980's and the original country is Sweden.
Concealing fate : Epiphany !!!!!
Yeah right!!!???, It sounds so similar!
Ågren's got that Antonio Sanchez' look on his face
Why the washing instruction label on the strings?
String muter
Music wise this doesn't do a thing for me but holy shit, Morgan lives in a different dimension.
Mats and Morgan Drummer meets Meshuggah Guitarist! 😀
This is it... it’s the shit! I’m done; happy camper!! No more searching :-D
Fredrik’s tone gives me… 🦴
I wish I had Morgan's hair.
5:27 WHAT THE FUCK!!!!
This is how 2 highly advanced alien species from different galaxies have a conversation
I'm not even qualified enough to say something about this performance
EpiDjent!!!
Amateur drumming, great solo on that trombone.
Does he use more than 3 strings on that trombone?
So who's the "Lead" and who's the percussion? ;)
\m/
Hans - Hehe - I hope you got my irony/sarcasm ;) (or is it sarcasm/irony?).
Morgan is definitely the lead on this on haha.
Yes.
What is the strange cloth/tape thing on the high strings? It almost seems like it would mute the strings, but it doesn’t seem attached to the high e.
A summary of Morgan Ågrens playing in this video: BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR! There you go :) Enjoy!
can i haz timing like you?
tight
@morbidSoulfly You mean Tesseract sounds like them?....
Mindblowing and I feel like I get 5% of what's happening ...
mayby a dumb question but does he have tape on his guitar and if so why ?
It looks like it's to mute the top strings for when he's not soloing. When he is, he probably reaches up and snags the tape between his knuckles and hangs onto it with his picking hand. Then, when he's finished, back onto the guitar it goes.
patsie00 stop those strings ringing I think
lml
1:38 sounds like a sped up riff of epiphany by tesseract l0l
Maybe, but this is well before Tesseract formed.
@@larsberglund yes i know i can see where they probably drew inspiration but theres only so many riffs you can come up with in an incredibly dissonant minor scale that its bound to happen aha
if you think I'm saying TesseracT wrote this first...not what I'm saying...tesseract would've written this after meshuggah
Wasn't this released in 99?
yeah I know that...but it's pretty similar.
