- The Mondeo ST200 - Ford’s first “grand tourer”?
Uh-oh - it’s another of those bold claims about cars everyone and their dog has an opinion on.
This one might just stick, however. Paul Woodford gets behind the wheel of perhaps the most underrated fast Ford of the nineties / noughties, and takes on ‘Storm Dennis’ to bring you this unique view of the first sporting Mondeo.
Written, presented and produced by Paul Woodford.

One of the rarest Euro Fords there is. Still looks really good i think, there is something about the shape i really love.
My brother had one about 15 years ago still remember how good the engine sounded
Kind of a hard one to classify isn't it? The ST220 is also just like that.
I think the problem with trying to judge the Mondeo is that while you can cherry pick a car that will beat it in any given area, you'll struggle to find another that can beat it in all of them. They're spacious, drive pretty much as good as a car of that size can, being able to take corners while not riding harshly, they are very mechanically robust, and easy to fix when they do go wrong. On top of this they are cheap to buy and insure.
It's the ultimate compromise car. It can be argued that it is the best car you can possibly buy if you can only buy one car, because it will always be able to handle whatever you may possibly need a car for, while not costing a complete fortune to do so. You can drive it to work everyday for years and not need a chiropractor and a bank loan, you can move wardrobes around with it, and you can even have some fun on that swooping off ramp. Maybe all at the same moment.
Too fragile and unreliable
@@user-sf7kl9uh7k mine isnt fragile
Excellent as always Paul. There's an ex Ford press car ST on eBay at the mo for £500. It's In a bad way but, like you say, in years to come we'll be saying "I remember when they were as little as £500".
2 years later you won't get a good set of wheels for £500 now
I have a panther black ST200 with 150.000km, the long one and god I love it ! I will keep it as longer as possible !
Takes me back to being made regional sales manager, my reward a new blue ST it was a real step up from XL 1.8 that were standard fleet car...boy were the 35 other Account Managers green with envy...as always informative interesting comment and content...more of the same please
Wow that sounds awesome, you worked in a dealership?
No I worked for a medium size 2000 employee company for 12 years in the 90s, car journey was Escort 13 😬Mondeo 18LX then ST in 1994 company changed to Rover as a area manager I was given a 620ti which in 1994 was blistering quick I had two turning down BMW 5 which was senior Managers option..eventually I had 530i I left in 2002 today I drive FPace SVR and at weekends 911 991.1 50th anniversary and my favourite an Evora 410 which is simply the best car I have ever driven
@@alanwayte1688 wow that sure sounds like fun! And your car list is awesome. As someone younger, I adore older 90s and early 00 cars, and just the times in general. If you don't mind me asking what job was it?
I worked for a plastics company that made everything from screw fixings to the oil/dredging industry that I specialised in. For reference to the cars I am now 57
@@alanwayte1688 ah that's nice thanks. About company cars, were you given them to use as a daily car or for work related only?
What a terrific video, well written, presented, directed and produced, with something new to say :)
Thanks for your video, i have one " Td 1.8 year 1999 "nordic", green metal since seven years and i never got problems with it and with 116000 km counter. very comfortable.....good handling on the road.
That brought back some memories 😮
Very well put together 👍🏻 yes the comments have started 👌🏻
Thanks for your review! Have two blue ST200 hatchbacks, one Limited Edition with original stereo with navigation, navi cd reader is placed under passenger's seat. They are currently in bodyshop. Can't wait to ride them again. Would love to buy another one in Panther black
aha! i know who you are Mr Hubert Frey. well done for them both passing their MOTs last week ;)
8 months later, one blue ST is still in bodyshop, LE one is sleeping in garage and new Panther Black member of a family is my daily now :-)
Like a cheaper Richard hammond 😂 nice review dude 👍
still have my ST 24 with low miles
nice car, i had one but it didnt have the woof as the xr4i i used to drive. I now have the ST200 LE and its a beast that wants to go
I have one of these. The main head turning feature is the sound.
1997 Ford Mondeo 2.0 zetec. Mu best car..
I can tell you why the (Met I think) order was cancelled. The mk1-2 Mondeo was too fragile for use as a police car. Soft wheels, suspension, the head gaskets on the 2.5 aren't up to service work either.
My first car is an st24 and it's so much fun to drive it's white too so it blends in traffic
Pleaseeee do a video about the mk1 that you parked next to at the end ,i own one exaclty like that mk 1 only that it got an engine swap w the 2.5 v6 from the mk 2
04:58, Rover SD what? They were donkey's years before this. How could you fail to recall Essex police's Ford RS200?
I have one.The sound turns heads all day long.
You selling it by any chance?
My best car ever. 😉
It’s 151 top speed
Out dragged by the Vectra 2.5/2.6 however, not 200 bhp.
My mate had one...boy did it depreciate !
Kenef!
Anyone selling one??? 🤤
The mk1/2 Mondeo didn't make a very good police car. The suspension's too fragile and easily knocked out of alignment.
Gonna puke
