Can our 21-year-old Ford still hit its original top speed?!

- Freshly off the back of a 6-month restoration, we decided to put our Ford Mondeo ST200 to the test. After 21 years, could it still reach its top speed of 144mph? Using one of the largest runways in the UK, Mike set out to see how fast it could go. Oh, and we brought along a full-on BTCC team for a bit of fun too.
Thank you to Halfords for sponsoring this video!

Why couldn’t you enter the straight moving instead of a standing start?
That's what I thought! I bet you can enter the runway at at least 60-70 mph already if not more!
@@javiTests need Jeremy there shouting “SPEEEEEED” at the camera

He'd do a better job than a Halfrauds 'technician'.

they've got to make $$$ from the video on top of the views and the ads they throw at you before watching.
@@trebm3 they've got to pay for the restoration that we've all enjoyed watching somehow
There's a thing called payed advertising.
This has got to be the most click baity video I have watched in a while. You did 7 minutes of commercial and maybe 2 minutes dealing with the actual title. Even in that 2 minutes you failed horribly at doing what you were attempting. You should have started on one of the taxi ramps and hit that straightaway at 60 or above. The speed test was just there to get car people interested and then you guys did a bait and switch for a commerical.
😔 👍🏻
@C. Fecteau-AU-MJ13 it is possible to make decent content while having and advert in the video rather than having some medicore content in the middle of your advert.
🤣. Truly an absolutely scummy video tbh. The car can't be classed as 21 years old and then the whole video is a big advert!
This would have to be the person who is the greedy one. Expects the world to bend at their knees to do what you want. maybe if you have them upwards of $10,000 maybe then you can talk. also it was not "Click Baity" the title was a question not a statement, seriously 🙄🙄
@@oliverdallas405 Adding a question mark to a title makes it even MORE click-baity.
7:18 nice blue smoke from the Mondeo's exhaust (Freshly built?) and he didn't use the curve at the start (or finish) of the track to give a flying start of 30-40mph. It's almost like they wanted to fail!
Was a brand new build with less than 200miles driven, so redlining every gear was enough to blow it up.
@@TheNismo777 what???? 🤣 I've seen cars going from the shop to the dyno.
Flying start doesnt make a big difference though, to be fair.
I was thinking the same , could have got it up into 2nd before hitting the runway.
My old Astra SRI 1.8 would keep up with that Mondeo.
The new video confirms you were right! Even though the guys at the shop supposedly had run it in...way to ruin a fresh engine!
Using Halfords techs really does nothing for the credibility of this channel.
Maybe not but it was well worth it to see the 2021 BTCC Halfords Type R there!

This has aged BEAUTIFULLY
It certainly has
Why not get a head start by going 50-80 mph back down the parallel taxiway, around the linking tarmac (as a higher speed corner), so you start your main run at 60-70 from the outset??
Or take a trip to Germany!!
Yes indeed why not U turn at the start of the runway - why is he doing a standing start not a rolling start - if he u turned in second he could easily see 140. This video was an awful Halfords advert - what a load of c@@p!!!
OR they could have used the BTCC car to tow the Mondeo by breaking up the air in front of it.
I vote for a trip to Germany, would love to see Mike dealing with aggressive drivers and cornering on the Autobahn at 140mph+
while it was 20 years ago, i do remember hitting MANY runs on the open highway in germany that were far in excess of 135mph
@@ghomerhust I do that quite often on my way to work, at least once or twice a week

It seems every video from this channel is just an advert. Waste of time.

My daughter just had a brake light bulb bought and fitted by Halfords for £6, so I don't think that's a fair point.
Could use the runway width to get more speed.. drive up to 20mph down the runway, then do a u-turn as you approach the end, accelerating as you make the turn/begin to drive up in the other direction.. maybe?? Lol
Yeah this seemed a bit low effort, not only there was a fairly long stretch of road that joined onto the runway at the start, with the width of that road you could probably do around 60 to start
Doesn't work unfortunately. At some point during the turn your velocity in the direction of the finish line will go from a negative one (you are driving away from the finish line) to zero. This is the point where you start accelerating towards the finish line and ideally you would face the finish line directly to apply all possible force the engine has in the right direction. However, during a U-turn, even if you use 100% of the track, you will always start sideways, i.e. 90 degrees tilted from the direction you actually want to go.
Assuming your tires are at temperature and you can preload the turbocharger (if you have one), it is always better to start from a standstill at the very beginning of the track. Can't cheat physics, yet..
I totally agree with your point thought... I expected the to try *something*
@@RickyMcSpanish Exactly what I was thinking when he did his first standing start
@@TheKaylich I'm sorry, but you are just wrong on this. You are mistaking the cars ability to accelerate in terms of velocity with the engines ability to accelerate the car linearly (absolute speed). When you are perpendicular to the track and turning, your acceleration is limited by the tires and your acceleration is due to changing direction not increasing absolute speed. Just think about if you were on a bicycle and you are traveling at a decent rate of speed and you pull a U turn with a diameter of 20 feet. When you complete the U turn, you will only be 10 feet from the point where you were perpendicular with the road. At the end of the U turn, you will be traveling much faster than you could accelerate from a stop in 10 feet.
@@brandonp8300 @TheKaylich Well, either one of you could be right, depending on the vehicle and the radius of the turn. During the second half of the U-turn, assuming a constant speed turn on a single radius, the average acceleration parallel to the runway is exactly one-half of the lateral gs provided by the tires. Whereas if the car did a standing start from the very end of the runway, had AWD, then engine power permitting, it could potentially use 100% of the grip of its tires to accelerate over that same distance, thereby reaching a speed sqrt(2)=1.41 times faster. However, the FWD Mondeo will never be able to accelerate in a straight line at the same gs that it can corner, and its engine only makes 200 hp, so the best strategy would indeed be to take a running start on the largest radius circle possible.
Wouldn't touch halfords with a barge pole
I don't even live in the UK, and i wouldn't ever use them. I mean the services they do are so basic a 13year old can do it...
With small garages going out of business those mechanics have to go somewhere. Chances are a lot of those well trained and experienced mechanics end up at Halfords so I wouldn't be too snooty about them.

Halford's are a complete rip off my ex wife took her car in for an pre MOT inspection and Halford's recommended that she needed to change the Cam belt to pass the Mot. when she told me i rang up the service centre to question this obviously dishonest statement and i asked the technician why a cam belt is needed for an MOT (Which it isn't) and he told me " The engine needs to be running!" I had the American version of this, the Contour SVT, and I just loved that car!
The funny thing here is that the Halfords road tech is doing jobs that anyone can do such as checking fluid levels and tyre pressures. Whereas the BTCC team have to check on the data logging system, recalibration, engine mapping, suspension setup etc. Yes, aswell as fluid levels and tyre pressures.

Great video, but after all that expense of rebuilding the Mondeo I'd of repaired or replaced that roof lining.
Yeah it looks absolutely terrible
Dont remember my ST being that slow. your doing 60 to 83 in 10 seconds? must be under powered.
Ya the car doesn't have 200 crank hp that's for sure, he's finished the Quarter mile at 83mph and there's nothing better then that to know the power of a car. My old stock 1994 Saturn SC2 finished at 88mph and my modified 2012 Chevy Cruze did 89mph. The Cruze was 3200lbs with about 175hp.
My ST24 had less power and still dealt to it on the 1/4 mile time. In fact it did a 16.7 or something with the IMRC playing silly buggers
Wouldn't be surprised if the IMRC unit isn't working on that. Absolutely hammers top-end power, which is exactly what you needed in 4th gear. Mind you, I used to have an ST200 as a family wagon, and it was never that quick (also drank like a fish). My BX 16v would have murdered it in a 1/4 mile race, despite having less power, but sadly I never got to try it out before our ST200 was turned into bean cans. Still got the old BX though, so if you fancy a quick 1/4 mile at another airfield, I'm game!
All I have to say to this is Captain Slow, Veyron, Ehra-Lessein. He came off the bend at somewhere near 140 to hit 250 on the straight. This needs the same, this car could easily be run up to 50 or 60 out of a taxiway and then you've got a chance of getting close
Was the original claimed top speed ever verified?
Was it ever a genuine 144Mph car, and if so under what conditions would Ford have set that?
Downhill in a hurricane
A banked test track. Far bigger than any runway.
Yep in there dreams Sales bumph all the way.
in the mind of a drugged up salesman
I thought you were going to use the touring car to “tow” the Mondeo up to 130+ in a shorter distance by allowing the Mondeo to draft in its slipstream. That might have helped you hit 144 before running out of runway.
What a gem of a ST220
Just pointing out that you said "If you were to do this with a current Formula 1 team they'd turn up with a car that was probably 5 or even 10 years old" and if that were true it would mean potentially getting a V8 with the blown exhausts which sound incredible. If they were willing to go even older than that you could have a V10 with that *phenomenal* sound
Halfords.... no thank you.....
you should have done one more run, rolling start, having the Honda ahead of you giving you slipstream ;)
Fair play to that Halfords technician, you definitely wouldn't have hit 123mph without his expertise.
Easily could have used one end of the track to do a 180 degree rolling start of around 30-40mph in at least 2nd gear, instead of a standing start?
That probably would haven't given them enough room to at least get into 5th gear for a few seconds.
Sounds to me as if tour IMRC isn't opening the secondaries. Might be worth replacing it.
This passed through my mind too, it does seem to be down on power around 3750rpm, and it just isn't growling like a V6 Duratec. Classic stuck IMRC stuck secondaries. I'm far from convinced they have done much work to the engine or the rest of the car.
My ep3 is nearly 20 years old and still goes off the clock ⏰
And I'm sure it's far from standard
