    Man, more than the age up, what pissed me and probably a lot more fans was Bendis' reaction.
    He was acting as if we were all a bunch of idiots, and the story about Jon growing up and becoming his own person would be lame and boring, and he said "he was sorry that he didn't think Jon playing games and going through school would be cool". Hey Bendis, imagine if someone came in the middle of your ultimate spider-man run, aged Peter Parker up 30 years and then gave it back to you. How would you like it?
    What an asshole.

    At nycc I met Tomasi and told him how much I loved his Superman. I gestured to my girlfriend and said something along the lines of "Ive ranted to her alot about how good it was". She acknowledged and then said " oh ya, this is the one where you were saying that other guy took over and messed everything up". The look on Tomasis face was priceless, I felt so bad but she did not understand the context 😂

    I also want to say that one of the biggest missed opportunities with Bendis's age up of Jon is the fact that Jon was not traumatized and scared of his own father. Like he should be actually terrified cause he was basically held hostage by a doppelgänger of his father and it would be hard to differentiate the two in his mind.

      Yeah, like, it's why a lot of the father's son family scenes in Son of Kal-el and Dark Crisis that they just keep giving Jon with and Clark & Lois don't feel real, they should not be that close.
      No, I don't want Jonathan to be damaged beyond relief like Red Hoodd and Cassandra Cain with their parents but should at least be awkward.
      Clark and Lois should not know how to talk to and relate to their son, and he should not really want to talk to them, but know that he should. Maybe he resents them for letting him leave and leaving him the way they did because he was only a kid. It wasn't their intention, but still.
      But it's not about making Jon character make sense. No, it's about "making Jon the new Superman." Whether or not it actually works.
      "I'm the man of tomorrow. You are for the days after."
      Take the legacy, I basically gave you off panel, Captain Nepotism
      "From the time I was a kid, I always recognized my dad's heartbeat." HUG and embrace the man who looks exactly like the guy who tortured me for his years and is actually responsible for me being in that situation.

    Also, yeah, Sal and Benny are missing out. The Warworld saga is legit one of the greatest new superman stories written and them being dogmatic and stubborn in a weird way about not reading it.
    Superman not adopting two orphan kids from a world from which they were enslaved and tortured is basic superman.
    How many robins does batman have, and how many of them have ended up dead at least once?
    Kenan's powersets are entirely different. He is more into a mythical side. Each of the characters have a different personality. The kids are entirely different, hell-one of them is a new god.
    This is the natural evolution of superman as a character-going from a planetary protector to being in an intergalactic level and becoming a symbol which is known throughout the universe. Makes sense for a being with his powerset. Unlike batman, who is supposed to be a street level hero but has travelled through time through the evolution of man and shit.

    I will say that Jon Kent being into environmental and geopolitical issues feels authentic to (late) teenagers today. So many are invested in these issues (and rightly so) so having a Superboy/Superman who is as well just makes sense as he was raised with the belief that "if you can help, you have to help".

    Grant Morrison’s Action Comics is the best Superman run. It should be a fan favorite.
    I think that Superman really came off as a champion of the oppressed in a way few iterations do. Grant Morrison knocked it out of the park!
    I also actually like the political slant to Jon Kent’s book, because it felt like a return to the original Superman’s roots as a political superhero in the Golden Age. He is after all the Man of Tomorrow

    I am still pissed that bendis ruined everything with the superman family and aged up my boy Jonathan Samuel Kent superboy for bullshit reasons just because he wanted his horrible legion of superheroes book which failed badly and to make it worse we lost my favorite team the super sons. Which sucks because I loved that team Super sons with Jonathan Samuel Kent superboy as his little 10 year old self and Damian Wayne robin going on fun adventures and saving the day, and to see that still gone breaks my heart into a million pieces because that team was amazing and tons of fun.

    Just want to add to those saying you should give the Warworld Saga a shot. It has some clunky bits (ooh, another lost race of secret super-people!), but overall it just feels very classic Superman. Mongul always makes a great villain, and the contrast with Clark's pacifism shines. The Authority characters are mostly used well, and the whole story has a nice build to it. But what got me, and actually finally sold me on the older Jon, was the emotion in the issue when they finally reunite.
    I think it will play better as a binge-read, and hope you guys give it a shot (and make a video letting us know what you think, of course).

Honestly Superman using time travel to save John would be a perfect way to do it even if John knew that order for him to become the person saw he would have to go back into the portal. Couple that with a sequel to Lois and Clark and readers really are getting the best of both worlds. Plus, the Warworld kids sticking around still leaves room for Dad Clark. Beyond excited that DC is tapping into the strength of the Super-family and the interesting directions you can take these stories.

      Him being bi is only a problem because it makes him being an adult permanent (or as permanent as you can get in comics without a retocn punch to the face) and the fact that the relationship with Jay wreekes of tokenism and marketing instead of a genuine character discovery done through crushes of other ya heroes.
      Jon as a bi superboy discovering himself on the teen titans would have been better then " hi pink hair, you new stuff is cool, wanna make out, smile for our cover shot"

    • @WannabeWryter
      @WannabeWryter Рік тому +1

      @Will N Tom Taylor's literally said the only reason he did made Jon buy was because there weren't a lot of Bi characters. As a Bisexual man my self I can tell you it's never just a thing, It's a part of you that grows and develops.
      Not something you discover and embracr in between the panels so that the writer can get some unearned spotlight and few more issues and attention on his book and his portrayal of Jon
      (Both would have probably died around issie 8 because Son of Kal-el was boring on top of being pointless)
      True development and growth is something Jon will never have now because DC writers Have skipped over and fast tracked him twice to force him into adulthood and then shoved him into the front lines of so many events that hes basically a full fledged Nightwing for Superman Now
      Minus The fun history and personality that makes a character like Nightwing
      Work.
      (
      I'd say Jon calling somebody Kitty is out of character between Bendis and Tom Taylor. I don't know what his character is anymore. No one does, and they've changed it and him too much. However, one come thread is no one seems to like how Tom Taylor writes him, making him a stoic board that gives annoying speeches and talks too much.
      Jay has more for personality than Jon in his own series, and I could care less about pink hair.
      I will never see Jonathan as any as a Superman, a Bi-Icon, or a Real Character anymore
      He was my favorite, but DC, They've ruined him. 😔
      ( I know Tom Taylor's planning in many series it's gonna explain Jon's inbetween years but considering hes the one who screwed up Jon more after Bendis, I'm not excited for it)

      @Will N It will be controversial, of course, but if done right and wicked cruel, it could work. Jon is no longer the fun innocent kid he used to be might as well traumatized him more.
      they're going to do have to go full comic book craziness, we're talking either:
      Jay wanted to use Jon and somehow found out what Pink Krptonite does.
      Lex luthor created Jay as a meta life form with Pink Krptonite hair specifically to get close to the New Superman just to f*ck with him.
      Pink Krptonite doesn't " Make you Gay"
      It does, however, increase the feelings of physical desire and emotional pleasure. If I wanted to have your son kissing a house plant. Or, maybe it you boys rides the rainbow who knows" was real who know" "Whyyy!!!" " Your father's Skip over our Conner for you, a boy who grew to a man in under a month. And suddenly was everywhere, I had to see what all the fuss was about. Gotta say I was rather disappointed jon, you good for a laugh. But you're too green jonathan you'll never be rival your father was."
      Oh well, like any failed experiment. You gotta start fresh and wipe away to board" (Snaps his fingers Jay disintegrates) " Jayyyy!!!"
      "Lex giveth and lex tak ith away"
      OR Go even farther
      Jon's a clone too. The entire age up was just a big scheme, Lex, to screw with Clark
      " You gave your legacy to a clone, and not even the right one, hahahahah."

      And if the bond is close enough they perform a Stephen universe like fusion which gives them extra powers.

      If the fans and higher-ups won't let these characters age, die, change, mature, grow old, turn evil, have life altering events matter, or become legacy identities that are passed down, then having a whole family of heroes who meet every fans taste or interpretation is the only way forward. Anyone who complains that it's "watering down" a specific hero, needs to either learn to live with it and accept that continuity does not matter at all, that these characters are forever static, like folk stories, greek myths, or pulp heroes like the Shadow and that each writer can do whatever they want in their runs without having to "put the toys back in the box". Or just let these heroes die already and let another generation come in and let time move forward already.

    I'll add that not, everything, about Bendis' run was forgotten. His Superman story had an arc where the space races formed the United Planets, kinda like the UN of space and that's still the status quo for the space based comics, mostly Green Lantern.
    Mind you, we haven't had a new GL book since the Infinite Frontier one ended, but still.
    Otherwise I 100% agree with all the Bendis' criticisms.

    The post crisis superman living in the new 52 universe in secret with Lois and Jon and him helping out in secret was great.
    Rebirth, shortly after was also great, then doing one of the quickest retcons in history and making him two supermen that needed to merge was where it then got silly.
    Don't forget Dan Jurgans was doing a great job on action comics which also covered Clark with Jon.
    Bendis was the one completely ruin it all.

    Convergence was a serious introduced classic Superman in The New 52 and it didn't end because it wasn't working with 10 issue series on purpose was a mechanism to do just that to to remove the New 52 Superman and replace him with the modern classic it also allowed an idea that created conditions for Lois to be able to give birth to Jonathan Kent. You would think if two people are going to make a video on the origins of Superman and the evolution of the Superman family that that would be a a pivotal point in their discussion.

    Yeah I think the easiest solution to Jon is make him from another Earth or timeline, I think it would be funny if he was New 52 Superboy who got jealous that Jon was the real son of Superman or something and took his place, meanwhile kid Jon is on another Earth or being tortured by Bar Torr or some shit.

You know if Lex Luthor really wanted to block out knowledge of Superman's identity and so forth he could have just used Hector Hammond like in the jail a storyline. Hector Hammond broke through everyone's defenses and made them forget the Justice League of America existed then try to remind people of the JLA but was stopped by the alien to ask him to make people forget in the first place.

I really enjoyed #1050, and it was also the first time I learned that apparently Superman has had his identity public for a long time. And I read plenty of DC stuff, it's just never come up somehow. But yeah, this'll be the first time I've followed a mainline Superman run. I appreciate the big, blue boyscout a lot, I've just never felt drawn to reading much of his stuff. Though I did like Superman and the Authority.

    There is a "prelude" to the War World Saga storyline that sees Jon & Superman fight extradimensional aliens and contact with these aliens causes Kal-El's cells to stop absorbing solar energy so Superman is secretly getting both progressively weaker & older this leads to Kal-El forming a new version of The Authority in a miniseries called Superman & The Authority and it's in that book where The War World Saga truly begins

    Only bit I am not sure about in the revamp is the powering up as someone who remembers when the potential for stories suffered when Superman was Soooo powerful before Byrne.
    I love the earth-3 Jon idea but I think it would have to be that he doesn’t know he is Ultra Man’s son until young Jon returns (and young Jon was just travelling back from his Joe-El trip rather than tortured).
    On the Flash front, that family really works in the start of One Minute War - enjoyed that.
    The meeting of the Supermen and the ripple effect about who they all are and came to be could be the “Existential Crisis” Tiffany mentioned!! Not much action and a lot of talking and introspection though 🤔

Barry Allen had died shortly before I enter preschool so Wally West was the flash I grew up with except for the TV show which made me have to look up hey who is this Barry Allen person? I'm talking about the 1990s Flash TV show not the current cw-1. It's funny how to the greatest events to happen in comics happen in my lifetime when I was too young to read or go to school. 1984 and 1985 I believe. Older, experienced, bigger, version of Supergirl. Throw in some drama about being from another universe, and there you go. You don’t “need” to change a bunch of stuff, just because you haven’t read stories with her in them before. A good writer works around that.
      Her classic outfit is as iconic to the character as Superman’s hair curl or red cape is to him.

    If I am doing the Super Family, Clark is the main Superman of Earth does all classic Superman roles and leads the JL, Supergirl goes more space and deep Kryptonian things since she is the only one raised Kryptonian, Jon I think should double down on his environmental thing, it makes him distinct from his dad. Let him be the hippie superman that fights to end world hunger. Connor is tricky, I think he works best as apart of a team of some sort, lean into the edge that Connor has been characterized with as of late. Let Chinese Superman do his thing, it works and made sense. Finally let the kids not headline their own series, but let them basically team up with earthbound Super Family members throughout Action Comics, but mainly Clark

    • @WannabeWryter
      @WannabeWryter Рік тому +1

      Yeah, the environmental Social Justice Superman thing, for Jon kent, was never a thing before Tom Taylor made it up and forced it on him.
      The Social Justice Superhero angle doesn't work for Jon has 0 conncetion or history to it, it just felt like Tom Taylor preaching Unlike characters with actaul history like someone like green arrow, captain america, swamp thing, or icon and rocket.
      Frankly is would work better for Clark Kent, whose an actual reporter and knows stuff I oppsed to teenager whose been sent everywhere from thr multiverse to future, Before being handed the most important mantle in the planet.
      Frankly, I'd distance Jon as far as you can from the crappy changes Bendis and Tom Taylor's forced into him because neither are the fun Supersons that actually made the character actually likable and popular.

    • @G-LukeJA
      @G-LukeJA Рік тому +1

      @@WannabeWryter it only works if you approach it from a non preachy angle yeah, similar to like Atom Eve did in Invincible. Less talking, more doing. Every story is workable, you just need a writer with the skill to do it. A Superman who primarily focuses on social and humanitarian aid instead of crime fighting can't be hard to do, hell, Clark did it in his heyday.

    • @G-LukeJA
      @G-LukeJA Рік тому

    • @WannabeWryter
      @WannabeWryter Рік тому

      @G-Luke Perhaps, but it came out of left field for Jon, especially Since considering his history there was no reason for him to know any of that stuff and He mostly just gave stotic mature speeches that never sounded more like Tom Taylor was preaching. Instead of the fun emotional character that he used to be before, everything about him was changed for the worse. (Saved the 🏳️‍🌈, but screw Mr. Pink hair).
      also, Jon didn't really Do anything that different from Clark (another problem Tom Taylormade him a YA clark clone) At the end of the day because Superman as a character will go as far as he needs to for any one who needs it no matter the situation. So saying that Jon goes farther and does more for situations doesn't really work.
      They often have to make Clark look more passive and saying " Well son that's what I've always done, but if you and your 2 years of hero experience wanna go farther feel free, there's literally been hundreds of stories about why Superman only does so much because due to the nature of comics there are certain issues that you could fix but never will be allowed to Like climate change"
      Having a guy with Blizzard breath standing in front of a climate change rally looks really stupid.

      @G-LukeJA Рік тому

      @@WannabeWryter yh I agree with that, and I also agree that the protest thing looks dumb, protests are for people who lack the power to do otherwise. I still think there is a good middle ground here, even if it's not busting up chemical plants and protesting trees being chopped down, I think a humanitarian lean is the right idea for Jon yk, and it wouldn't and shouldn't take long for someone like Jon to be up to speed on matters of the earth, and u underestimate what even his young self may be aware of, but didn't have that attitude to act on. All of this to say, humanitarian Jon is cool,Tom Taylor just mucked it up by turning it into a preach pen
