@@Sketchy_2 true. I usually like to call Gundam, the most underrated popular anime franchise. In the landscape of anime fans in the west, Gundam seems to not have a powerful presence.
I've made models a lot as a child and the thing that absolutely astonished me about Gunpla is how extremely cheap it is and the quality. For sometimes less than a 4th of what a standard Western military kit or something more expensive like Warhammer you get a kit that is pre-colored, has amazing detail almost always including clear parts and stickers, and can actually move and hold it's pose. And they're pretty simple to assemble. It's amazing and compared to all other models it's almost unbelievable that they can do this, it has opened up model making for me again in a new way since I have less time and energy than I did as a kid and I also need my money for other things now. It's kinda hard to go back to regular kits now that my eyes have been opened by Gunpla.
I confess: As a kid I thought Gundam was the greatest s***. So I watched both seasons of IBO last year, at the age of 35. I was such an idiot. Now I own 10+ Gunpla kits and build them regularly, even with my kids, having so much fun and enjoying the hobby. I'm even playing them as miniatures in Andrea Sfiligoi's "Samurai Robots Battle Royale" (which works pretty well and pretty near to the anime, btw.). So so glad that I changed my mind. By trying it out and leaving my prejudices behind. I'm starting to watch IBO again, but with my wife... and she thought Gundam was the greatest s***, seeing me building up all these kids toys... We have finished the 4th episode by now and she asks so many questions about the characters... and she seems to like it. That feels so great, haha. So so glad that she changes her mind. By trying it out and leaving her prejudices behind.
My story of being an idiot. I have already watched several Gundam series when SEED came out. Now, it has it's fair share of flaws. But the opening scene, when the pod drops and GINNs come out of it, in my opinion, is one of the most beautifully animated sequences in Gundam. Pitty, the rest of SEED wasn't on the same level of quality. Anyway, GINN was the very first MS that made me think "gee, i wonder if there is a model of it?" Over 13 years later i have over 50 Gunpla (never bothered to count) and i think i possibly probably might have an addiction.

This has to be one of the best , if not the best, video that I have seen that thoroughly explains and describes what gundam and gunpla is. I really liked and enjoyed this!!
I'm one of those fans that helped drive Gundam Wing's gunpla sales... way back in like 2000 where I had to go to a specialty shop 1hr away in the metropolitan American Midwest. It still BLOWS MY MIND to see these in mainstream bookstores now. And thank goodness because it was a pain in the ass to get it 20 years ago lmao
I grew up obsessed with Gunpla. I am considering entering into that competition as I have a wide variety in my collection of gunpla some of which I've had to mold recolor and move to make completely new original kits. It's been something close to my heart. And honestly watching this video gave me newfound hope for this idea to become a reality. Late to the video but inspirational all the same.
"Get your favorite, or collect them all." Don't knock the Gundam Wing commercial, it made me WANT Gunpla! It was great because as a gamer in rural country my mother wanted me to have a hobby that didn't involve staring at a screen all day so when I told her I wanted to get into model kits she said she would buy me one whenever I finished one. I began going through Gundam Wing kits so fast she amended the rule to one a week and when she realized they were $20 each for the High Grades she said ok you can use your own money now!
Aand that's why you alaways buy in bulk. Even better if you get your friends on board so you can split the shipping fees. Save up, chose a handful of kits and dont get ripped off. I usually buy from hobby link japan, they get you the kit at lower than its price and are honest about shipping, not like that "have a 50€ kit for 80€+ shipping" crap you get on ebay.
Best hobby ever! if you want to de stress and switch off from a shitty day at work I can't recommend this hobby enough. It's next level Lego. I can't recommend it enough.
I just built my second gundam, it was a soothing process to make something and then put it on a shelf at work to show off my model. Great 25$ investment!
I bought a Tallgeese II and was given 3 other model kits, 2 of them master grade. 12 years later, I am finally building them. 2 down, 2 to go. I can't believe I've had these boxes in my display cabinet for over 12 years and have not started building them until April 2019 :)
Thanks!!! We want to make it as welcoming as possible. Gundam and Gunpla are so much fun! We'll definitely be making more videos like this so please subscribe!!
My first Gunpla was a Master Grade RX-78 GPO2A. It took me a while, but from then on, I was hooked. I still have a Perfect Grade Wing Zero Custom in the box mainly because I've never had the time and/or space to lay every thing out properly.
its amazing how much gunpla has advanced over the years. HG's have so much articulation and the color separation on the parts is great, just a little bit of panel lining after snapping them together and you got yourself a great looking gundam. Building a kit today feels like you are building a action figure
One of the great parts about GunPla it can also serve as an entry way into other model kits, when I was building my Gundam Models my Grandfather had no Idea what I was doing, bur when I was building a Model P-47 Thunderbolt, he would tell me all his old stories from when he had been stationed at an Air Field as a Medic during WWII, some my models may have broke or been lost over the years but I'll always have those memories.
It's a real shame it isn't as popular over here in the UK, fortunately I do know a store that sells Gunpla but it's only a small amount and they're slowly replacing them all with transformer models
When Gundam wing 1st aired, that got me into gunpla. Built a few HG and MG kits long ago. Got the itch last year and started buying RG and MG kits again. Never knew how much I missed building gunpla.
I have become so busy with work that I haven't had time to enjoy my main hobby of video gaming, but something that takes as much or as little free time that I do have is gunpla. Most relaxing and enjoyable hobby around.
It's cool; I think people are a lot nicer than they used to be towards the Seed franchise. The modern consensus seems to be that the mech designs were all good, and the only part that aged badly was Destiny. People still really love Stargazer, too. -Sincerely, a fellow Seed apologist
FA-78 Full Armor Gundam and MS-06R Psycho Zaku will always have a special place in my heart. They're my favorite example of how Mobile Suits aren't just scaled-up infantrymen with fancy paintjobs. They're weapons of war that we're going to strap as many weapons onto as possible.
I've never done anything related to gunpla before in my life, but this video has been a wonderful learning experience! Thank you for all of the basic, but highly detailed information about this hobby! I might consider picking up a kit where ever I see one next! Great job!
I've been subscribed to this channel just to see if it would ever make a good video. didn't even realize this was crunchyroll until halfway through xD well done.
I never saw ads for Gunpla when I was a kid. I think I was in a Michael's craft store and looking at the model cars and I saw this badass looking mech model. I had no idea what it was from but after building that first one I was hooked! I started watching the Anime and begging my mom for the Master Grade kits.
I was going to comic shops in the early and late '90s buying gundam and macross model kits. I remember when wing came out in the states and was able to buy gunpla in toys r us and building became normal. I was so happy and had a ton of kits people had never seen until years after.
Awesome overview of Gunpla. As others who have commented, your presentation was well spoken and clear. Hope to see you online again. Keep up the great work!
I love building Gunpla. I don't just build the kit now a days. I plan the build. From any customizing, to paint jobs to decal application everything is set up and ready to go before the kit is even opened. Spending a weekend or two painting, assembling, applying custom decals, and kitbashing. It all makes putting that final product on my shelf worth every minute. In fact, I declared on facebook that the summer of 2019 will be my "Summer of Gundam". I have kits on order and will be building all summer long. I even have a big kitbash project I plan on doing. My own personal Zaku. To all my fellow Gunpla builders out there old and new, Happy Building!
This was spot on. I got the itch to build again while watching Iron Blooded Orphans. Although I had built some when I was younger from Gundam Wing and G Gundam, it had been a long time. Putting together Barbatos all these years later was very enjoyable.

I remember my dad coming home from the Philippines and he happened to have the RG Wing Gundam EW, and he gave ME the task to build it, my brother was also given the task but he obviously wasn’t gonna do it. I of course built it and that was probably one of the best things I’ve ever accomplished, completing my first ever Gundam model/Gunpla. What’s funny is that it was my mom who told my dad to get the kit, and my mom knows about Gundam, mainly because she is from the Gundam Wing generation. She told me all about her knowledge about Gundams and even showed me a couple episodes of Gundam Wing while she was rewatching the show. That did nothing but strengthen my passion for Gunpla. Here I am with about 30 or so Gunpla kits in my collection, all thanks to my parents.
I just finished my first build, the Gundam Sandrock Custom. I bought it because it was the cheapest one available, and I loved the relaxation and satisfaction of putting it all together. Now Im watching all the shows, playing the games, and I just bought another kit already. Im so addicted to this and I cant believe it took me this long to get started.

I began going through Gundam Wing kits so fast she amended the rule to one a week and when she realized they were $20 each for the High Grades she said ok you can use your own money now!
gunpla in itself is pretty affordable, the shipping cost is what kills it, shipping can cost half if not more then the kit itself lol
So true. Bad for North America GUNPLA builders...
Not too bad all the time. Cept p bandai. That's where we get shafted
amazon. Free shipping.
@@MechaTheSpider I dont use amazon enough to invest in their prime membership
Me: looks over at my deathsythe, wing zero and heavy arms lol
I was eyeing down Heavy-Arms and Wing Zero before this. Hehe, I'm gonna buy thw heck outta them
Mobile fighter G Gundam for me mainly because it's the only Gundam show I've seen I am in love with the burning Gundam.
Wow this was great! Very thorough and a good synopsis for those new to the franchise and Gunpla in general. Definitely make more videos like this 👍
The Ball triumphs any Mobile Suit known to man.
Ummmmmm actually, the ball isn't a mobile suit!!!!!!! ( Don't worry I'm only saying this for a joke)
This video gave me life. Thanks a lot!
I'm so happy you have life!
Love your series, Gundam deserves a spot on "Toys that made us" you guys would kill it!
IBO got me into gundam when I saw it on crunchyroll and 00 quanta is my fav. A part of me died watching war in the pocket though.
Same here, war in the pocket broke my heart...BRING BACK BERNIE 😭😭😭
its amazing how much gunpla has advanced over the years.
Gundam is one of my favorite genres of anime and im happy to finally know the history behind it 😁
It's such wild history too!
@@CrunchyrollInsideAnime ikr its so awesome that you guys made a video on it, and it was really well done to!
"genre" smh
@@florestin777 thank you for the correction😁 im not the best on spelling.
@@kingghoul7162 it's not a genre...
It's a real shame it isn't as popular over here in the UK, fortunately I do know a store that sells Gunpla but it's only a small amount and they're slowly replacing them all with transformer models
I only know that my local Tokyo toys and worlds apart sell them
When Gundam wing 1st aired, that got me into gunpla.
Gundam is my favorite as well. The Gundam Build series got me started with building Gunpla and I'm not gonna stop now
I've never seen gundam, but I live their designs. My favorite is any variation of death scythe
As a fan of gundam, this video hit all the right notes for me. thank you very much. favorite gundam : Gundam Asterea Type F2 from Gundam 00
You're very welcome!
That is my favorite version of Exia.
Enough to almost buy HobbyStar's.
Amatsuo I’m waiting for my MG
Nice.
6:08 the first perfect grade kit was actually the Evangelion Unit 01. Then came the Gundam.
He said first pg GUNPLA
A lot of people hate on the series, but my favorite is the Seed series, with the Strike Freedom and Freedom being my favorite gundams.
I just finished build my first Perfect Grade (the Exia from Gundam 00) and this was just awesome doing it and yeah I sold my kidney for this PG
Really nice, well edited and informative video :)
you forgot to mention one important thing....
IT COST A LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT OF MONEEYYYY!!!!
I've never done anything related to gunpla before in my life, but this video has been a wonderful learning experience! Thank you for all of the basic, but highly detailed information about this hobby! I might consider picking up a kit where ever I see one next! Great job!
The fact the he didn’t go through a whole model kit assembly line just goes to show how much unnecessary effort is put into custom kits lol
Favourite Gundam series: Iron-Blooded Orphans
Favourite kit: Barbatos Lupus HG
I've been subscribed to this channel just to see if it would ever make a good video. didn't even realize this was crunchyroll until halfway through xD well done.
10:46 Finally someone who pronounces Barbatos the same way I do.
You're not alone!
I never saw ads for Gunpla when I was a kid. I think I was in a Michael's craft store and looking at the model cars and I saw this badass looking mech model. I had no idea what it was from but after building that first one I was hooked! I started watching the Anime and begging my mom for the Master Grade kits.
I'm an RG kind of guy. Nothing beats the level of detail and disability in such a small scale.
This was a great history of Gundam.
My favorite mobile suit is Char's Zaku 2
*GUNPLA = LIFE*
GUNPLA = FREEDOM
WALLET=SLAVERY
We need more Gundam on crunchy roll, UC especially
"What are you? Some kind of GunPla Pleb?"
I think you mean,
/GunPleb/
10:53
Anyone who's seen Season 2: Haha, I'm depressed now.
He said "great ending" that shit hit me hard
4:46 You have the grades in the wrong order.
From easiest to hardest it goes
High Grade
Master Grade
Real Grade
Perfect Grade
RG Zeta
RG zeta is not that bad tho... the parts are just small. And the insane amount of stickers
@19 Adarsh Kandan Parthiban most gunpla builders do that
My all time favorite is the God Gundam(aka Burning Gundam) Mobile Fighter G Gundam is the best series imo ❤
God. I disagree with you so hard on so many fronts. But I'll respect your opinion as a Gundam 'fan'.
From, U.C fan.
Legit though G-Gundam is my least favourite Gundam series. But it's fun to laugh at.
@@ForgedHorizons Lol I understand the frustration, G Gundam isnt exactly the most 'hailed' series in the franchise lol but while I love the war and drama aspects of Gundam, I've always been drawn more to the "tournament fighter" style Gundam series like G and Build Fighters, but a lot of my gunpla are actually from series like Zeta and Wing(which I also love) lol I also respect your opinion as a fan to not like G Gundam, but in the end, cmon guys, they're just toys x)
@@bathumb45 I'm just giving you a hard time. People are entitled to like whatever they want. Gundam is Gundam. So we're still homies in my books even if we have different tastes.
@@bathumb45 also build fighters is great. Shame Try and Divers couldn't live up to the original.
God I love that series so much! I’m glad I’m not alone!
$3 for the original rx78 in the 80s wow
I’ve never seen a gunpla kit at GameStop
Cynical MGTOW I go to hobby shops
Love how you were building while explaining, enjoyed the hell out of this video. My fav has to be the Universal Century, and specially the Zeon MS, and more specifically, the all mighty MS-09 Dom.
Hands down one of the best Gundam videos out there. I re-watch this video a lot to keep it fresh… and I adore your Gunpla History video. Mad love to the awesome information!
"What's your favorite Gundam?"
To hell with the Gundam! The MS-06F Zaku II is the greatest of all time!
Sieg Zeon!
Nothings beats Gundam 00 Raiser! :D But tbh I think that Gundam Freedom is the strongest cause its overall performance is the best.
Celestial Being
I really like the gundam series, for me iron blooded orphans is the best as mikazuki and gundam Barbatos lupus rex (I think) and akikhiro (I don't remember the name) made the series much better. They went from human debris to... I did find it sad though still great series and franchise.
You haven’t seen the UC series have you
Akihiro piloted Gundam Gusion Rebake Full City. Didn't even look it up, seriously.
@@kenneth7497 No I guess not, i plan to watch all the ones in crunchyroll but I have a lot to finish first
When I started building my 1/144 Gundam
I spent 8hr straight
Didn’t even realize it
But my back did
Same
@19 Adarsh Kandan Parthiban does it matter?
My girl bought me an hg 00-gundam for my bday. 3 days later I bought myself a master grade set. I fell in love right away with this hobby. It seems intimidating but it's soooo damn relaxing and fun
That was genuinely an amazingly composed and produced video, in my humble opinion. You just got yourself a new sub mannnnn! Loved it.
Crunchyroll couldn't buy this poor man a Perfect Grade for the sake of their own video? Weak.
My favorite Gundam anime is G Gundam
Thanks for the likes
Mine was Zeta Gundam, but that would change as I'm watching Seed & Seed Destiny.
nice i liked zeta a littke but not that much but unicorn was good and cconfusing
little
A day late, but thanks for the recommendation youtube.
as a gunpla builder of 10 years, this genuinely made me smile.
I mean I knew all this information beforehand, but it was nice to see it laid out for newcomers to see, there's no such thing as too many gunpla builders ^^
The best gundam is the nice a thicc Seravee Gundam.
Look at the FD-03 Gustav Karl then talk about THICC!
ah yes, this is why I subscribed. ✨♥️
"We in da fucha now, bebe!" 🙌😝
I just finished my first build, the Gundam Sandrock Custom. I bought it because it was the cheapest one available, and I loved the relaxation and satisfaction of putting it all together. Now Im watching all the shows, playing the games, and I just bought another kit already. Im so addicted to this and I cant believe it took me this long to get started.
Thank you for the video. I've been wanting to put one of these together but I missed this wave in the 80s for several reasons.
You did a great job of explaining the basics of this hobby and gave great references to other resources.
He pronounced barbatos wrong around 12 min it’s not Barbados🇧🇧 it’s barbatos
But otherwise the video was great
Gigguk would be proud...
Uh oh he listed Taiwan as a country, banned in PRC.
As someone with a full Imperial Knights household detachment part of which was built with Ban-Di kits there is something just adorable about this video.
I’m a 25 year old American so it should be no surprise my favorite is Gundam Wing. Played a Gundam fighting game recently went straight for Hiro’s Gundam.
