I don't get the "romance". Both girls are being pick mes and it's just irks me, while Aqua is so passive and shows no romantic interest. Akane is doing way too mutch for this emotionally unavailable boy. Maybe this is intentionally written this way, because they are still so young, dunno...
i dont think either of them are remotely exhibiting "pick me" behavior. kana is a somewhat self absorbed tsundere which is definitely not how a pick me acts, and aqua literally saved akanes life and she feels indebted to him. that said i dont disagree with your first sentence. the fandom made more of the romance than the story does.
Well I mean, Akane almost suicided back then from the social attack and Aqua not only find her and save her life, he also save her in the social media too. "She almost die and he save her big time" I think that's what it is. Kana also suffer from her downfall since she's a kid too(10 years+ I think?), She just got dished out by everyone and even her mom doesn't care about her that much. She hold that feeling for so long and Aqua is the one that try to save her from that and make her shine once again by making her become the idol. So, I don't blame those girl if they fall for Aqua so hard. I mean, us, the watcher didn't experience the same thing as those two girl so I don't think we have a strong feeling for Aqua, that's why sometime we don't understand why this two girls so obsessed with him.
