:)
I saw him live in L.A. around 2010. Hey was very overweight and had a constant arm tremor, caused by his medications. He guzzled through many bottles of water between songs, and read lyrics and chords from a music stand.
The truth is, he didn't play amazingly. He made a lot of mistakes. What WAS amazing though was how much the audience loved him. Nobody cared that he made mistakes. He received huge applause after every song. We all loved him, were aware of how hard his road was, and knew we were seeing a guy who fought his way through it all and was still up onstage, with a compromised body (and probably compromised thinking and feeling), due to his meds. He could do no wrong that night.
I'm not crying, you're crying
@@robertito_dobbs we're all crying :(
I was at that show as well. At one point a woman next to me burst into tears. So lucky to have seen him.
Dude that was very rude. A lot of disabled people are overweight due to their medication causes big appetite. I’m an autistic singer. I gained 200 pounds from meds. It does happen. Learn how not to be fatphobic and ableist
@@Mistydawn1 hey there, i can't quite tell if you're replying to the original comment or not. if you are, then hopefully you can see that they haven't actually said anything offensive, they certainly didn't mean any offense anyway. i hope you're doing well.
RIP Daniel. Free at last. Thank you for the music.
Kitty West 😔😔😔😔
He karked it?
O nooo
😢 im late again
Daniel is one of the artists I don't play for everyone because not everyone gets it. And i dont want to have to kill someone for talking trash about him. He changed my life, in a serious way.
Puber T. Snatches amen! Same here!
Ditto, my friend.
Puber T. Snatches you won’t do shit
same here
In my country Argentina lived a man there in 1960, José Alberto Iglesias, known as Tanguito, changed Argentine music, especially rock, began the entire national rock movement from which artists like Spinetta and Charly García were born, some will surely recognize those names. Tanguito did not have the best voice, or the best musical production, or exotic lyrics, it was simple and natural music of a great soul which to this day produce emotions for me. It is known that at that time not many appreciated him, he got into drugs and his life came down. He died escaping from a psychiatric hospital. Daniel Johnston and Tanguito, I love them, their music, their styles, their souls and their story, their deaths are one of the things that make me feel really sad, I think they both have similar stories in different places.
When a person is troubled, there is no time to be fake. There is no time to worry about what others think. There is no time for anything but truth and pain. People like Daniel frighten those who refuse to face their demons. He opens a door they wish to hold tightly shut. This is also why his music is so touching for those who understand it. He boldly admits to what is behind the door. RIP Daniel.
Seb Web10 you couldn’t have said it better
Good explanation, Fred.
@Yes No shut ya face
@@vulnikkura try to give him a break, he’s obviously uncomfortable with opening the door to his emotions. A sad life deserves pity.
This film is incredible. Daniel isn't an artist like, say, David Bowie. Not in the same world. But, there is something so warm and fragile and strange and wonderful about Daniel and his music. It elevates higher than just enjoying a song, you feel like you're experiencing something special. Like a glimmer of a gem in a huge massive hunk of boring rock.
Yeeah! Deeper sanity; so alone. It's any edges not. Sticky humans. Believe!
This comment alone has made me want to listen to Daniels music
You’re just realizing this now? Where have you been the past 10-15 years?
He's better then David Bowie
i have a friend who is schizophrenic (i think) and sometimes i envy her the freedom she has, although having said that her freedom makes everyone around her miserable (lol) but she has incredible talent...
He was so fragile and he held on to some things most of us can’t. Like a child who hasn’t had too many fingerprints across his brain.
Daniel's Dad just passed away. Pray for Dan and his family.
Titus Monk this is not the time or place
Sorry don't pray to satan , because he's not real.
Danny is gone too now
You know who would play Daniel really well in a biopic? Michael Cera.
nice one - I thought a young Sam Rockwell
That would be an incredible biopic.
Idk man I kinda think Zach galifinakas could pull it off. He’s got a similar vocal range.
Spot on
FOR REAL
I will miss you, Daniel. Rest in peace.
This Doc was always kinda sad to watch, Daniels parents are just so sweet. But now the sadness is on another level. I watched this last night for the first time in over 10 years and it hits hard knowing Daniel, Bill and Mable are all no longer with us. Very Sad.
You´re now in your own land, full of peace, love and music. Thanks genius for spread your art here, on this selfish world.
Something I appreciate & admire about Daniel is that he made his music all on his own, even though he didn't have the best equipment. Each time he wanted to create a new tape, he had to rerecord all of it. So all of them sounded unique. That amount of passion to share your music is something worth praising.
We all went as a group (little sister, Mommy, 3 friends and their mommy) to a theater here in Indiana that specializes in art films, indi films and other interesting stuff. I had never heard of him before the documentary and found it too weird for me, but I don't regret seeing it. My sister & I recently talked about this film to my boyfriend. She went on a whole tangent about it, so I suppose she got real into his music/biography after seeing it.
It's weird how you thought you were cool 30 years ago but did'nt know about Daniel and are now embarassed
I bought Small Change when it was released. I pass the test.
Same. I heard a song of his on spotify dj and was obsessed instantly. Blew my mind it was from our heyday lol. Unbelievably amazing music. Wonder if he was a musical savant.
A sweet and troubled person. I'm sorry he's gone.
Dear Daniel,
Thank you for sharing your world with us. Some may not fully understand how you felt..but us who did saw the story of the artist that was so bold..
Rip you dear, wonderful, human being...
@Seb Web10 It's hard to understand people's point of view sometimes, but he put it out there, to express himself and share how he felt. Most do understand, some don't, and that's alright. But, please don't be rude about it, Space Alien Jesus was just trying to be nice. So, please don't take this the wrong way, I hope you have a good day/night.
the last shot with the amusement park rides and those chords fucking gives me chills.
GOD what a fucking phenomenal person daniel was
Saddest news ever when I found out last night :( I saw him in 2005 or 2006 and it is absolutely my favorite concert I ever went to. Miss you, big guy.
i'm kind of disappointed by all of the misunderstood criticism on his music. you don't need to be technically great (ex. have as wide of a vocal range as prince or axl rose, play guitar like hendrix or bb king, play cello like yo yo ma) to make great music. daniel johnston is a testament to that. he didn't take any guitar, piano, and vocal lessons. despite this, he is a great artist who has made great music. i've only listened to "hi, how are you a few times". i haven't digested his other albums as much as i have for this one, so i'll just talk about it. there is so much to appreciate about this record. johnston's child-like and innocent vocal prescene and playful instrumentals juxtaposed against his dark and depressing lyricism create an eery atmospehere for the listener. some may complain about the lo-fi quality of the record, but it actually adds to the record. it makes it easier to imagine him having a nervous breakdown in his garage while recording this album and it gives a strong emotional impression unto you. when johnston yelps "how am i supposed to love if i never got love?" i feel deeply disturbed and sympathetic that he felt this way
@Dainiel Siggins You're an animal. Go away.
The essence of outsider art.
saw this documentary on tv once. can't remember what channel. probably the sundance channel. but it moved me. you feel bad for him but also happy that he can express himself and get his music out. such an emotional film.
Artist who shared his world. That's what an artist does
RIP Daniel, now he is in the dimension where he belongs ...
Heaven.
watched this today. I cant get him out of my head .Im normally not a fan of this kind of music but this guy was a Musical genius. I was so sad to see 5 minutes after this ended when I looked it up that he had passed last month
Where did you watch it? Please tell me :D searching for a long time
@@suburbankodak3065 I'm Sorry, I really Don't Remember but I Watched it Twice. Maybe Axs Music Channel. I'm sure if you did enough Research, you can Find It. Good Luck and To quote Daniel, True Love will Find you In The End.
He was beautifully broken, beyond us. Thank you for your art and soul. RIP Daniel.
This is by far my number one film, documentary, and story of all time. I saw Daniel live about 10 years ago and loved every minute of it.
This is the most beautiful Music Documentary of history!
I agree
Still so heartbroken over his death. I heard “Don’t Be Scared” at the end of the new Hulu show “Only Murders in the Building” and a flood of emotion hit me like a ton of bricks. I hope he’s at peace.🖤
I agree with you
we love dan....hes not crazy its the world!
I've never heard of Daniel Johnston although I recognise some of his music. Now I know a little bit about him. I've had demons for the most part of my life. Life is really hard so I can really sympathise with how hard Daniels life would have been. He is at peace now after living a very hard and difficult life. Rest in peace Daniel.
I was drawn to this song by an apple commercial. Since then, I have found it so much a part of , what we don't understand, but we do love. It is one of my favorite of all time, and I define my life in historical , musical, moments.
Like everyone else I discovered the dude from Kurt’s shirt. I’m glad real music fans are still listening and enjoying.
I discovered it through the show Weeds.
I haven't seen this in a while. Brilliant film i'd recommend to anyone. I became a big underground fan of a lo of cool stuff (in 95 i met someone in a big band and he had all these demos of awesome artists, some he opened for or who opened for him and the band covered a Rocketship but i wasn't really aware of much till me and my friends went through the every Johnston tape) I met Daniel in, i think it was 1999 twice. He's awesome, awesome shows in a small place and people came from all over the world (He was selling Rejection Unknown and they spoke of a movie that will take a while but is coming out) On UA-cam there is a set of him in 1999, and then there's the one live (on cassette and CD under two diff names, it was a show in Germany at the time) Point is, in 1999 i loved that set - songs, "Kool Aid," (a good opener he was doing) "Frustrated Artist" - "Folly" - "Mr Lonley" - some of his greatest stuff IMO and for the most part none of those songs got proper studio recordings. I love Johnston, and i love the originals. Sometimes you still get that person, "What is this?" and then you put on the cover and they love it, and then i'm upset lol - peace
Such an affecting film. Watch ALL of the extras. There's a scene in Africa, of all places, with Daniel and his father that will blow you away. Unforgettable.
Thank you for the music, Daniel.
I first heard about him from The SPIN Alternative Record Guide back in the mid nineties, but have only heard a few snippets of only a handful of songs. It's tragic how our society treats those whom we consider mentally ill as pariahs that need to be sequestered away and have their artistic talents blunted or excised entirely by pharmaceuticals because they are simply misunderstood. I'll now have to watch the film and bring some tissue because I have a feeling I won't be able to hold back the waterworks.
R.I.P. Daniel. You were a true Icon of Austin.
No one will ever compare to you... rest easy, Dan, we love you❤️
I think it's kinda funny reading the comments of the people who don't get it. It's always the ones that can't understand how sometimes perfecting the physicality of whatever discipline the artist practices takes away from the raw expression. Daniels case is obviously an exaggerated version of this, which is why his music is so easy to not like, but to watch the documentary and not realize the unconventional and unintended genius of the man is just laughable.
Julian Solomone really tho
I like his music a lot actually
'perfect music never satisfies' rimbaud
He look like somebody I use to love
😢
LOVED this documentary.
I loved this film. I had heard of Daniel Johnston before this film but since this it has changed my mind. I think for a guy with who had no guitar and piano lessons he does pretty good. He's like Dylan but more emotionally inspiring.
Best way to make a good album is in the middle of a nervous breakdown.
definitely
THANKS FOR THE MUSIC. WE LOVE YOU.
A great artist.
Rest in Peace Uncle Daniel
I watched this like the year or year after it released back when you could really find anything on you tube … Mind was blown
RIP legend. May you rest in forever peace now.
I've loved Daniel's music for 20 years now and my only regret is I didn't know him before. I discovered him on the now defunct Brave New Waves radio show with Brent Bambry and then with Patti Schmidt. Good not so old times.

This made me cry so hard I had to turn it off, but I don't know why.
i had the same reaction when i saw it. turns out years later i myself was hospitalized and diagnosed w bipolar.
Sarah Anderson Oddly enough I was recently diagnosed as well and immediately thought of this video
His failed revenge on Seattle farming.
Im bi polar and i didnt cry like bitch

The Story of an Artist - Daniel Johnston
He sold it to Apple for some shitty advertisement. Sell out!
Titus McCarthy did it ever cross your mind that his parents need the money to take care of him
Rip Danny you were so amazing. I wish I could have seen you live
I'm 50 and a fan of Wesley Willis, rocky Erickson and the like. How did I miss this guys songs? Rest in peace mate. I'll listen to you all day today.
Daniel Johnston made a I song called "I Met Roky Erickson" you should check out
Al Foote wow. Serendipity at work. I’ll check it out thanks mate.
Great, great, great!
For the belgian viewers (if some), the movie will be released the first week of june in the nova in Brussels.
I immediately related the two upon discovering Johnston. They both give off somewhat of an undeniable innocence in their lyrics and melodies. I think Smith might be what Johnston would be capable of if he were not so afflicted.
Love him so much
you girl do the best comentary of this film EVER!
completely full of feeling... absolutely amazing film. They dont make them like this anymore.
Beautiful man
Those 4 lines might be the best lyrics ive ever heard.
Quem não chorou e se emocionou mentiu, Johsnton Gênio Gigante
That would be amazing.
Def worth the watch...glad I paid for it
I love how people like to use excuses like, oh you just like it because its not mainstream to hide them from some really beautiful music. We are naturally afraid I guess, I know ive done it.
Good enough for Jon Ronson. Good enough for me. Incredible film. Just watch it, changed my life.
Love you Daniel rest easy you were miles ahead of everything x
Watched the movie tonight. Completely spellbinding film.
Great, great, great!
I saw this and it is amazing-buy it on DVD!!!!!
Such a good film. RIP Daniel
His personality, lyrics, the way he sings his songs remind me of charles manson and Syd barrett.
Me too. I actually discovered him by Charles Manson, he came up in my recommended after listening to a Charles Manson song.
Saw this film, at old Tampa Theatre, an art work itself....
RIP Daniel. Your drawing on my wall will stay forever.
he was ahead of his time
primeiro brasileiro que vejo que conhece daniel johnson!
This movie reminds me of Frank. I'll definitely watch this.
Rest in peace Daniel.
i tear up bro...
Thank You, Daniel! Enjoy the next journey.🙏
I’m sure he’s on it now
This movie is amazing and everyone should see it!
Wow. I’ve never seen a comment from 14 years ago.
i wouldn't say he was a musical genius, like in my opinion elliott smith is way more talented...but he made some very great songs like "some things last a long time", which i think is absolutely beautiful...
more ppl need to watch this
Thank you for keeping Austin weird, RIP Daniel . #SpeedingMotorcycle
Long time I couldn't pin it down, but now I see how much Johnston reminds me of Bruno S. from Werner Herzog's movie "Stroszek".
I'm quite a documentary buff but I've gotta say this is still my favorite documentary. It's truely riveting and hard to not get totally engrossed in it. Few years back, it was free on crackle.com and I watched it about 5 times in a row.
Dr.Popsicle Danny and I were friends as teenagers. I knew him before all this happened to him. He was a great person with a dream. It hurts me to see how his life went. So much pain for a good person to go through who just wanted to be loved for his artistic ability.
John Fair
I could imagine so. Such an interesting story. Makes me wonder how he's doing nowadays.
Rest in paradise!
anyone know where i can watch this movie on the internet without downloading anything and shit?
@LucFrum thank you, and you are very polite! ^ _ ^
goodbye Daniel. we will miss you
this film is so sad.
his life is so painful.
But its a great movie!

What is the song at the beginning of the trailer.
Wait... He took the keys out of a plane (in flight his father was piloting) and threw them OUT OF THE WINDOW? Holy mother of god! Thats next level. Who IS THIS GUY!!!!????
A crazy person who needs medication to stay sane....
I watched the documentary "The Devil and Daniel Johnston" and apart from it being frightening and heartbreaking, in it there's certain things he said that epitomise what this record means to me. "I'm ok coz I know where ever i go I have music in my heart." His childlike purity stills me. Such a stunning song. Andrea x
Andrea covers 'Some Things Last A Long Time' on her new album 'Lifelines' due out on 30 May 2011.
Are you really Andrea Corr? I know this is quite a stretch but it would blow my mind if this is really you. My sister used to play your music when I was alot younger. It brings back alot of good memories, and you wouldnt understand what I would give to relive those days. That's the power of music I guess, it's fuel for the heart and soul.
@Vomitoni Story of an Artist
Félicitations, vous êtes maintenant sous notre surveillance en raison de suspicion récente.
i'd also like to see it, but i don't think our small town cinema would bring it in front of me...so even though i'm sure it's not the right thing to do i want to snatch it from the net.
Anyone know what the name of the very first song is? Where he talks about the number 7? And the second one when he's being interviewed by MTV?
silentrocker33 The name of the song is Spirit World Rising and the one where he is being interviewed is Walking the Cow.

The second one is "Walking the Cow"
Damn...
