  • Have you ever heard that Dark Side of the Moon and The Wizard of Oz sync up to each other? Have you ever wondered if that's real or just total bull? Have you ever actually watched "Dark Side of the Rainbow" and wondered if it was by design or just a coincidence? If any of these are true, this vid's for you. I get to the bottom of the urban legend by watching Dark Side of the Moon Synced up to 6 different movies in order to figure out if there's really something special about The Wizard of Oz.
Special thanks to my on-set crew: Cameron Gack, Noelle Tingey, and Kathy Calderon-Escamilla!
This video is more than a year in the making, so thank you for watching and reading the description!

A note that I didn't include in the video (because I didn't want to bog it down with too much setup and I didn't think anyone would care enough to call me on it. I was wrong!)
There are many things about Dark Side of the Rainbow that I don't explicitly address in the video, and many people have said that I clearly didn't catch all of the synchronicities that exist after seeing my score. This is true! I went into DSotR as blind as I could. In a scientific experiment I wanted to judge all of these movies by the same standard, which is me going in without any prior knowledge of what it should be and what I should be seeing. I could absolutely have done the research and chronicled everything anyone has ever observed, but that's not at all fair because people haven't done that over the course of decades with The Shining or Shrek. All of the scores are based on what I could catch on the first viewing. I'm positive that each of these movies would only score higher and higher the more times I watched it, and the more people were in on it the more synchronicities could be crowd-sourced, as they have been for wizard of oz.
    ALSO:
Sorry I didn't mute the audio when I was watching the movies, a lot of you guys feel very strongly that I should have. My bad! I shoulda done that! But what really matters is that I judged all of the movies according to the same criteria, so it's still SCIENTIFICALLY SOUND in my book.

@scouserfourteen it's not fair to call him out on not noticing things that take like 3 leaps in judgement each in one viewing. Dark Side of the Rainbow has had 30 years for people to jump to conclusions, if they did the same with any of the other movies they'd have way higher scores too. Also, he got #6 and #7.

I understand trying to be fair but ya can’t do an experiment on something unless you know how it is supposed to go. The whole point of the dark side of the rainbow is to play after the third lion. I believe it is unfair to change that in order to “be on par with the other movies” when that is not how Oz is supposed to be viewed. I actually think it makes it much more of a legend that you have to play after the third roar, because like who the fuck discovered that! And it’s uncanny how right at that spot it works tremendous

I actually had it confirmed by a very reliable source (Billy Meier) that Stanley Kubrick was the director who filmed the fake moon landing footage. He was an Illuminati insider and he revealed much of their plans for a mind controlled future in A Clockwork Orange. Notice how women in the movie have unnatural colored hair like pink and purple. The reason he was able to reveal this was because he knew what was being planned for the future. Eyes Wide Shut ended up getting him killed. He showed a rough cut of the film to the executives and died 6 days later. They then made cuts to the film against his wishes and the cut content has never been released. I suggest you pay attention to your friend. Just ignore anything about flat earth theory and reptilians. These are disinfo campaigns by the CIA which were created to discredit anyone speaking the truth.

At the end of side 1 of the album you had to flip the album over and time the needle drop on side 2 to a specific spot in the movie.

The vocals/lyrics all take place before Dave goes into the monolith or after he shows up again later where he sees his old self. The music greatly fits the mood since it’s all visual craziness anyway and the lyrics uses are pretty fitting thematically as well. Basically anything anyone ever thinks is that phenomenal about Dark Side of the Rainbow can also be said about Echoes+Final chapter of 2001.

I love that you did this. A ton(!) of work. Your understanding of film is incredible. However, the synchronicity between this album and ANY film isn't meant for deep, sober analysis. The whole idea of watching this IS to be high or in at least a slightly different head-space...making any coincidences seem absolutely incredible and even purposeful. This whole video could be a popular lecture in film school about the connection between music and film beyond the actual soundtrack, but you'd end up with a bunch of students who came back the next day telling you how incredible it was and how they found so many more things you missed, cuz they went home and got stoned and watched it. It's just fundamentally meant to be an 'altered state' kind of experience. Again, this was an incredible video and you're pretty sharp, keep it up. (my personal experience of watching Dark Side of The Rainbow for the first time was at a laser light show in an actual theater...and yes, I was on mushrooms) Cheers!

This should count for many points: "Money" Starts as Dorothy enters Oz. Money is significant because the whole Wizard of Oz Story is an allegory about the United States monetary policy (which prints worthless paper money) The Emerald city is built on the perceived power of The Wizard. But the Wizard is a fake. The green Emerald City represents green paper money which looks valuable but is fake/worthless compared to Gold or Silver.
This demonstrates the "power of belief" and also the danger of being attracted to something that glitters and failing to recognize things with the highest value like Home and Family.
"The Wizard Of Oz Was Written In The 1890s, And It Carried A Secret Message That Wasn't Decoded Until 1964. ... But no one noticed the clear parallels to American politics in the 1890s until a historian named Henry Littlefield published an analysis of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz in 1964"

I'm not saying Stanley Kubrick created The Shining to be backed up with "Dark Side of the Moon." That would be wacky and stretching a bit too far. But if it is pure synchronicity, it's the strangest and most compelling synchronicity I've ever felt.
My favorite thing about "Shining Side of the Moon" is how it turns "Us and Them" into Dick Hallorann's theme song, loaded with interpretations and portents. It plays when he gets introduced, and talks to Danny about "shining" and Room 237. On the second album loop, the song starts again when Jack decides to check out the room and we see the suite in detail for the first time...and it's ALSO the point where Dick Hallorann personally gets involved in the story again, picking up RIGHT as he has his vision freakout.

Some trivia -Floyd did movie soundtracks back in the late 60s and early 70s and when Stanley Kubrick made clockwork orange he wanted to make the soundtrack using pieces from the 1970 rock opera song "atom heart mother" by Pink Floyd. Unfortunately he never got permission however the album cover (picture of a cow) can be seen in the record store scene. 3 movie soundtracks were made from Floyd albums ( more, zazbrinzkie point and La valle) so its no coincidence these albums sync so well to movies as all their albums were pretty much spaced out like them. Here's an interesting one: Take 'Echoes', which is the entire B side of Pink Floyd's 'Meddle' album, and start the first "ping" with the "Jupiter and Beyond the Infinite" title card in the final sequence of Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. I've done the edit myself, but I can't upload it anywhere as it gets pulled down on copyright grounds.
Pink Floyd did score several films, "The Committee" (1968), "More" (1969), "Zabriskie Point" (modified by director, 1970), and "La Vallée" aka "Obscured by Clouds" (1971). The latter is one of my favourite Floyd albums, and clearly shows the seeds of what would become Dark Side of the Moon. It is said that Kubrick approached the band at one point for soundtrack work, but it never panned out.

I just watched The Wizard of Oz for the first time the other day and someone mentioned the "Dark Side of the Moon" thing. I then found "The Dark Side of Oz" video on UA-cam and looked at it for a bit. Then I found your video and spontaneously watched all of it. It was fun! You said "good night" at the end and I wondered how you knew I watched it at night ... I looked at the date and I saw you posted the video on this same day a year ago! I was confused for a bit, thinking you uploaded the video just now. But no, we're not in 2020 anymore. Anyway, it's kind of cool that you did all this work so now we don't have to!

Gotta say, this was actually pretty interesting to watch as a Pink Floyd fan. Lots of interesting details everywhere, and I honestly wish this video became more popular as it's really interesting.

I tried watching Zoolander with Dark Side of the Moon recently, and it was actually perfect in so many areas. Starting from the beginning of the Paramount logo, here are all the moments I can immediately think of that work:
    1. The Malaysian army almost rhythmically marches to the register noises at the beginning of Speak To Me.
    2. Mugatu’s head comes into focus as soon as Breathe begins.
    3. During each of the characters’ introductory titles, On The Run intensifies accordingly.
    4. As Mugatu is talking with Derek’s manager, the ambience between On The Run and Time plays.
    5. The alarm clocks chime in the moment the announcer presents the trophy.
    6. Both Derek and Hansel’s intros are elevated by the Time’s suspenseful introduction.
    7. During the lines “you missed the starting gun” in time, Derek is told he didn’t win. Every single cut and reaction during the rest of the ceremony synchronizes with the music almost perfectly.
    8. When Derek looks at his reflection and gets mud splashed in his face by Hansel’s scooter, the women start singing, indicating a slightly more somber tone to the song, fitting the turn of the scene.
    9. As Derek is turning to look at his billboard, camera panning around him, the female voices build suspense. When he sees the billboard, the lead singer begins singing again.
    10. When the day is over and Derek is resting in his apartment contemplating his looks, the singer describes hanging on in quiet desperation, and the song being over.
    11. During the scene where Derek and his roommates are talking in their apartment kitchen, Time’s lyrics “home, home again” kick in.
    12. As Derek’s friends are spraying gasoline on themselves, mouths wide open, Great Gig in the Sky is playing, and it looks like they’re singing their hearts out.
    13. The singing intensifies slightly as Derek’s friends die in a massive explosion.
    14. Great Gig in the Sky is playing throughout an entire funeral service.
    15. As Derek is negotiating with his manager, Money starts playing.
    16. Around the end of Money, on the final line, “away,” mermaid Derek swims out of picture on a TV screen.
    17. As Derek is breaking down at being disowned by his father, the sad, drawn out transition between Money and Us and Them starts playing. When Derek looks into the sky and asks “who am I,” Us and Them begins almost immediately afterwards.
    18. The smacks on Derek’s butt from the masseuse is rhythmically in sync with Us and Them.
    19. Any Color You Like begins immediately as Mugatu’s brainwashing video begins playing. The entire scene matches the surreal vibe of the music, rhythmically and thematically. The guitar kicks in when a devilish Mugatu face appears with explosions behind him. The proceeding sequence of events, with Derek being confused and eventually fighting off cardboard cutouts, also matches rhythmically.
    20. Derek and Hansel begin arguing at the club as soon as Eclipse starts playing. Their gestures usually match the song in some way.
    21. Derek looks like he says “all you feel” during Eclipse.
    22. When the female singer in Eclipse shouts “everyone you meet,” Derek jumps, like he’s been startled.
    23. During the powerfully-delivered closing lines, “and everything under the sun is in tune,” Hansel pulls out his scooter. He pulls it out violently during the word “sun,” then sets it on the ground during the word “tune.” During the line “but the sun is eclipsed by the moon,” Hansel makes his final comment and rides away. He rides away as the closing word, “moon,” is being sung.
    24. During the time between the argument and Derek and Hansel’s fashion competition, the heartbeat concluding Eclipse and starting Speak To Me plays. The simplicity of the heartbeat ends and the registers begin sounding when David Bowie takes off his sunglasses.
    25. Breathe begins as soon as the competition begins. The entire scene is given an almost majestic tone with Derek and Hansel striking poses.
    26. During and slightly after Breathe’s line “grab it and run,” Hansel pulls his underwear out of his pants.
    27. As soon as Derek begins trying to take his underwear out of his pants, On The Run begins playing.
That’s about as far as I’ve gotten, my attention span conked out after that. Chances are, I’ll edit this comment in the future as I view this version of the movie multiple times.

I once saw DSOTM synced to that one episode of spongebob where they went to the future and the past (idk the name of the episode). It worked surprisingly often for a 20 minute episode. Sadly it has been removed bcz of copyright

Low key, if I become a filmmaker, I want all my films to sync up with albums. Also I did a second take when I saw you had less than 1k subscribers, your production value is amazing!

The first 15-30 mins of the Wizard of Oz is amazing. The yt video seems to be up again. So many good bits. Money starting on the witch riding her bike, the howling wind going with the voice in the storm and the transition to Dorothy after she knocked out and coming to again..... sublime.
I would much prefer the start when the guitars waver in, for when she first opens the door to Oz, but I'm sure there are many pieces of music that would suit that.
All in all synchronicities can be explained away unscientifically, by saying in all these works of art that folks have laboured over, "the muse was around". :-)

ALL 4 ‘The Godfather’ clips were PERFECT synchs! You didn’t mute it so you didn’t focus on the music. They fit either emotionally/headspace of the character or lyrically like ‘Us and Them’ when Apollonian and Michael come together, signifying their new found bond. The lyrics begin right after the car explodes and the lyrics are about saying goodbye and seeing them ‘on the dark side of the moon’.

I actually think the shrek opening is a good thematic sync since the movie does ultimately end up being about him breaking out of his initial role, even if he doesn't know that's what he needs at the start

After I watched this I went and watched Green Lantern synched to Dark Side of the Moon. It also fits pretty well. It's gotta be something about the structure of that album that just caters to a standard structure of a Hollywood movie

On the Run fits perfectly during the Somewhere Over the Rainbow scene. It's an eerie dichotomy and it appears as if Dorothy is watching ufos whiz overhead and a plane crashing over yonder.
It's always a highlight for me.

I always had in mind that the rule of the syncing implied DSotM completely obliterating the film soundtrack. Otherwise, it causes some pretty awkward dissonances (sorry, "spicy chords") when the album and the film score clash.
