El Negro performs "The Octopus" at the 2000 Modern Drummer Festival. Excerpted from the "Modern Drummer Festival 2000-2003" DVD. More information at HudsonMusic.com
You know, whenever I start to feel good about myself and my drumming, I see a video like this and realize how much more you can learn. It's really quite humbling honestly.
This is not only complete independence, but total interdependence and interaction of hand/feet muscle groups and joints; to smoothly, accurately and with great timing and precision execute this complicated Latin groove. I am an educated drummer and have been playing for 40 years and I am still impressed with this performance!
Huge Respect for Horacio..This style of Drumming requires great knowledge of latin percussions and Afro Cuban Music... He has knowledge of the Conga,Bongo,Guiro, and obviosuly the clave and other Afro Cuban Instruments because of which he is able to adapt those sounds to the Drum set which requires amazing independence,practice,discipline..!!
That clave pisses me off. Like, I don't even have the independence necessary to improvise in free time over a quarter/8th note hat and here he does this... fuck, man!
Rhytmically by far... oustanding...just incredible!. Both of them are up there, playing with an amazing sense of time and comtemporary drumming...I'm inspired ...going to practice right now..love you Negro and Mark. "Music is not a competition, but an inspiration" -aa.
Alex, your words are so true - and yourself have always been among the very best. Such a fine gestus that you share such fine words for the young master Horacio. MUCH love and respect, Alex - allways! Best regards from your friend, Peter Rahbek, DK
Did anyone see anything but men in the audience pan shot in the beginning? I spotted like 3, including the little girl. at first glance... Horacio is a MONSTER! Got his 20,000+ hours in for sure....
got to see him play in jersey with dave valentine - he did a classical piece, mozart, along with a chamber orchestra that was mind boggling - this guy is really on another level musically - saw him at the blue note from about 5 feet away with Camilo and I was slack jawed - an incredible musician...
@StickyyWinklee that's because drumming isn't ONLY about making beats, beyond just music it's a fun instrument to play and an incredibly challenging instrument on top of that. Not all drummers should always just make music, that's boring if it's all you do. It is fun to challenge yourself as well as watch a musician that can do what El Negro can do. I do think making a beat is an essential part of drumming but I can't say that is what really attracts me to it. It's just a fun challenge.
the first clave is 4/4 (though i guess since in afro cuban 6/8 and 4/4 translate back and forth 'elastically' as hernandez says, but it starts with rumba clave im sure)
the hardest thing must be keeping that kick cow bell going at the same rhythm with everything else about it... it requires lots of concentration and discipline... but in this case, class!
just listen to the foot block clave its rhumba clave in 4/4 sometimes with triplet feel. look up rhumba clave. it does change tho n i have trouble following as well

There is soooo much to learn, with not only afro Cuban but with all styles and it's mind boggling, not to master but to enjoy.
The left foot has its own brain
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I was lucky enough to watch him play like 6ft from me. All i could do was watch his left leg and try to pick up my jaw🤯
That left foot really does have its own brain.
If you all think practice will get you that sort of coordination. You are wrong. It is the yellow pants. Get some.
Yellow trousers of dexterity.

@@tomy333cuerdas6 yes and there’s that too.
Uhhhh. The gentleman IS Cuban. What do you expect? Everything you said is implied in the fact if where he is and where he came from
And not losing the left-foot clave. Afro Cuban drumming technique is not for the faint of rhythm.
That clave pisses me off. Like, I don't even have the independence necessary to improvise in free time over a quarter/8th note hat and here he does this... fuck, man!
Rock n roll is not so good to learn indépendance....
I think the headband is giving him the power to do this.
Sure when you play instrument like that you need good band 😂😂🙈
stunning....when i saw him live,, a few months ago, i think i cried...
and he never stopped to play the clave. he's really a great drummer
on top of all that, he makes it look most easy.. he shows no signs on his face that he is concentrating at all... truly facinating player
I like how he is so happy when playing! asi deberian ser todos los musicos!
Que maravilla de la creacion gracias por existir... que maestria
This guy is unbelievable...
Never seen anyone like him
Rhytmically by far... oustanding...just incredible!. Both of them are up there, playing with an amazing sense of time and comtemporary drumming...I'm inspired ...going to practice right now..love you Negro and Mark.

Amazing drummer!
Great Horacio!
humanly imposible . keeping the left foot clave steady , accenting with kick drum , beats and fills with hands , absolute perfection of coordination
Impresionante!!!
Even slowing this down takes forever to understand rhythmically
i seen Horacio play at the Cape Breton drum festival a few years back and he was amazing
quiero ver al negro!!! it's one of the gods i havent seen yet down here in miami!!!! horacio el pulpo!!!
I have the full performance DVD, it's great and has a couple play along songs of the concert.
These two Cats are on my top ten best percussionist list. WHOA !!
fantastic
real good music when u cant stop smiling while playing!
dammit, the clave on that foot cowbell is right on point. That sickening how easy he makes that look.
love the bassline
yup, watched him at casio music in milwaukee about 13 years ago, holy shit, mind blowing
im presionante!
It's a 2/3 rumba clave.
Oracio el Gato Negro Must... be Proud....
He's a monster, but Marc Quinones is very good too and deserves a praise

Wildly talented…
I'm not a drummer, but how the ffuuuuuuuuuck does he keep his left foot doing that?
I'm a drummer and I still don't know. He must not be fully human.
Search Marco Iannetta on UA-cam...
It still makes my head explode
Independence between the lımps the most hardest thıng about drums ın my opınon
Saludos buen 👍

Well... I'm confused.
Great work Hernandez! As always!
what the... wonderful how he keeps timing with his left foot, and it's a complex rhythm what he plays considering what his other limbs are doing :-D
El Negro toca muito.
master of all poly-rhythms
Muito bom.
yeah this guys bad ass....great independence.
I don´t need to count to enjoy it, but I need to count to understand it....

Finally! A song with plenty of cowbell! Good game internet! It was fun!
the fuck is chuck norris in 0:43
Just sick with that left foot!
im working on the 2/3 clave on the left foot its mad....i got down the songo beat with it but i still cant play it independently!!!!!
I'll put this in my FB to blow some people away
When I watch this, I wonder how many brains he has.
3 cowbells going at once? Epic.
Let's play "Find One"
@akendrum Not sure but it Sounds like its in 4... I just keep my ear on the 2-3 clave in his left foot. But the timing is challenging I agree.
Why do i suddenly have the urge to go on a head hunting safari ? LOL..
couldnt stop laughing.XDD
It's already hard enough for my girlfriend to understand a 4/4 drumsolo, I will be single because of this. Totally worth it.
But it is 4/4
the first clave is 4/4 (though i guess since in afro cuban 6/8 and 4/4 translate back and forth 'elastically' as hernandez says, but it starts with rumba clave im sure)
Sicker than sick
@Volcanistry They are not talking about the actual instruments. He is playing a clave on the cowbell with his left foot.
There are 3 people playing. The mimic, Horacio Hernandez and Horacio's left leg.
Cowbell party
the hardest thing must be keeping that kick cow bell going at the same rhythm with everything else about it... it requires lots of concentration and discipline... but in this case, class!
el Negro rules ...
a mi entender junto con Julio Barreto los mas grandes tocando latino ...
is that marc quinones from the allman brothers?
When is the song right after “octopus” going to be posted? That was the BEST song of the entire performance IMO!
@6Hendrik Man that's just Shure & Evans stickers.
@Easleytee I love Weckl's playing too but on what grounds do you judge him superior, after all music is not a sport
leik si bieniste por el ravios
Que tanto mira al percusionista
Ok, I give up.....was anyone able to get a time signature out of that?
in those days horacio was endorsed by LP, anybody knows what is the cowbell model that he used on the left foot ?????????????????
Мощь!!!!Жесть!!!!!
what clave is this ?? the 3:2 rumba or what im so confused
Yes! It is the 3:2 rumba clave.
just listen to the foot block clave its rhumba clave in 4/4 sometimes with triplet feel. look up rhumba clave. it does change tho n i have trouble following as well
@Spleenfome yeah, because he knows he's our god.
I can't tell what clave it is, does anybody know??
03:54 that's SABOR!!!!!! uhhhhh!
the left foot on cowbell must be 2/3 son clave ostinato , right?
uahuahuah and Patitucci embarassed in the middle XD fantastic
Lada 78 creo... :) es de Hilario Duran
I got sucked into the vortex of awesomeness and forgot to attempt to figure out the time sig changes...anyone with me?
John Patitucci - bass. Am I the only one who read John Petrucci, paused the video and went back? XP Either way, mindblowing rythm work!
