Easily one of the most skilled and musical drummers on the planet. There are drummers with great chops, but this guy knows how to PLAY MUSIC. Friggin genius, man.
Preach
Skilled, yes. One of the best out there. But the key is musical.

3:47 That stick flip to using the butt end of the stick for a harder-hitting rimshot is pure art in a fraction of a second! Flips it back at 4:25, blink and you miss it. Perfectly timed, wonderfully functional, and expertly executed
and on top of that, hes just in the studio
@@eddiecrownshaw199 hell yeah! Definitely function over form or flashiness. Makes it that much more beautiful to me, a true drummer's drummer. Definitely one of the greatest of my generation, IMHO
What if everyone had a baby who turned out genius
👌 perfection @ 4:25 👌
God mode activated
Who’s still watching this in 2024? This makes me nostalgic for my high school days for real. DMB was the first concert I ever went to during my sophomore year. Dave came out and said “ya’ll smell good this evening” because there was so much weed smoke in the air. 😏
This man doesn’t get enough credit. He’s phenomenal. One of my top 5 fave drummers.
?? Dudes one of the most well known drummers on earth!! Lol

Watching him play is like watching a beautiful dance. He's absurdly talented.
20 years of watching this video and still it’s incredible
Seriously I remember this playing in guitar center
On VHS*
His hi-hat play is so simple but powerful, i will never get bored of this video
Was he using the Zildjian K/Z combo?
Good ol 6 stroke roll
@@jjpopnfresh6822Yes
@@jjpopnfresh6822Wish I could get my hands on that 20” flat ride he used to have but I don’t think it’s produced anymore. Loved that quiet ride
Right this video never gets old.
He is the master of the number one most important skill a drummer must have: Dynamic volume control. He is so sharp and musically complementary, and best of all nobody sounds like him.
Usablefiber that's important but I'd say the number one most important thing for a drummer is keeping perfect time
Michael Jackson's drummer is good too, "Sugarfoot" Jonathan Phillip Moffitt. But this guy is really good! Also, check out Damien Schmitt, he's badass too. And I like Ray Luzier, Mike Mangini, Tony Royster jr and a couple others.
that statement shows you think there are 20 drummers in the whole world
77easy77 lol.... hilarious.
Dynamic volume control?? What in fucks sake is that?? Total made up bullshit. And you think it’s the NUMBER ONE THING that a drummer needs?? I’ve played for decades and I never even heard that nonsense. Do you even PLAY the drums????
Who is still digging this in the latter part of 2023?!
2024 baby!
@@aaronpetersen2736 yeah me too!

Best drummer girl
Aug 3 2024 Right here in the New River Gorge of West Virginia!! Woop! Woop!
All of my favorite drummers in one. Can't even put it in to words. Carter is the perfect mix of pocket, and chops.
I played along to this tune on a Roland kit and I had a separate kit programmed for the reggae section at the end with all kinds of percussion sounds, timbales, tambourine, cowbell, woodblock etc.... So much fun to jam to.
The best thing about Carter;
Seeing him live, playing his heart out, with a GIANT smile on his face. Incredibly contagious.
He’s like a machine with feelings, it’s unreal.
Holy shit. You could listen to this song, see him in concert and have no idea what kind of sorcery is going on until you see it up close, unadulterated. Goddamn.
I think u are a shit. A big shit. !
Truth. I first saw them in the 90s, and then saw them maybe 10 years ago up near stage right. Mesmerized.
I’ve watched Carter for 2 decades and I still don’t know what to say. He’s a top tier guy.
If I could start over as a drummer knowing what I know now, I would learn to play open handed like this. You can replicate a lot of what Carter can play (in theory) on a regular kit and playing style, but some of the work he does switching between both hands on the hi hat and the ride you could never pull off without his set up. The man is a genius and idk why more people haven't adopted his playing style. He can do it all.
hey man its never too late to learn a new style. there are ways to compensate as well. obviously its really hard when youve been leading with ur right hand the whole time playing crossed but try to turn ur kit into a lefty kit and it will only switch your feet. also you can get a remote hi hat. make ur double kick pedal a lefty. and use the extended pedal as ur main pedal on ur right side. ur remote hi hate pedal will be right in front of the bass drum. kinda wierd but u can get used to it!
I started open like this because of him!
If you play cross handed, one thing you can try to do is move your hi-hat to the right side, since muscle memory is already with your right hand to play the rhythms of hi hats. The only potential problem could be pedals…
@@BoowompGenerator3000 you could get an auxiliary Hi hat pedal. I'm right handed but I prefer to set up my kit like Carter sometimes. I think it's easier to keep the ride and hi hat on the same side.
I couldn’t be happier to see them back on stage doing what they do best. Emily is awesome.
I’m not a drummer, just a guitarist. So I can’t speak to the technical things he does effortlessly. I will just say, there are drummers who play rhythms, and there are drummers who are musical geniuses whose “voice” is their kit. Carter is the latter- and probably my favorite one ever. Always inspiring to listen to him and watch him work
I don't know how many hundreds of times I've watched this video. It always impresses me so much. For me, Carter is the most musical, dynamic and groovy drummer on the planet. His feeling and charisma are unchallenged for me.
He is honestly my hero
AHAHA...good to see I'm not alone Robin!
I got this VHS tape when I was in the 5th grade from my dad as well as a drum kit. I would watch this every day after school and would try my hardest to sound like this, but of course it wasn’t perfect. Long story short Carter Beauford was probably the biggest inspiration on me as a kid on my journey to becoming a drummer. If it wasn’t for that VHS tape I wouldn’t be drumming today. Thank you Mr. Beauford.
I named my son after this man. The talent, the warm personality, the humility, the, uh, TALENT. Just 100% wow.
That was hands down some of the best drumming ive ever heard. His finger to wrist transitions are flawless, and the creativity he pulls out of a four count is unmatched.
Hands down. Nice pun!
“Finger to wrist transitions”. Lol. What a crock.

CODMarioWarfare no one cares about your opinion.
@@jerrywitaj wow You're quite opinionated. Have any links to your 'decades' of playing experience? Some of us might like to hear you play
At 2:56. This guy does a triplets fill one haned. Wtf. That's absolutely sick. And let's not overlook this man's incredible hithat feel. Man on man. On point. In the pocket. This is IT
I think they are doubles
Triplets starting on the left hand, only right on toms
@@erickollars3732 correct. Not a one handed triplet as stated above.
Love that he also has time to hit the cymbal with his right hand during the tom fill to accent the other instruments...
I’ve listened to this song a thousand times, but I’ll never hear it the same again. Absolute mastery.
Dude! Right. I Have an even greater appreciation for skill and talent when actually seeing him play it.
One of my favorite drummers of all time, he can make drums sing. That one handed tom fill after 2:55 ...SLICK!
Agree! Love that fill. Just so smooth and not hurried like most drummers.
Carter was wearing Under Armour before it was even a thing. Watching him drum chills me out in the most ironic way.
I forgot how much I love the studio version of #41.
Me too
Not only the best at his art but he smiles through performances ! It is so great to see someone thoroughly enjoying what he is playing! He is phenomenal!
Damn that high hat intro is still some of my favorite drumming ever.. so perfect.
I've listened to Dave Matthews Band for as long as I can remember and Carter's playing has stood out to me like no other drummer I've ever heard. He expresses every piece of the music with such detail that it almost makes you think he is the lead for every part. Not only is the band not like any other band, but so is his style, and that really makes them a true diamond in the rough. I don't know of any other band that has such taste and class. Cheers to the band that has no equal.
still one of the best drum videos on the platform
His dexterity is second to none. Goosebumps.
Just listened to this song again today for the first time in years and remembered that Carter's hi hat work is the best that ever has been. What a player!
Nice to see so many appreciate Carter Beauford's playing. He has impeccable timing and I am grateful to have seen him many times live with DMB.
Most underrated drummer on the planet. Left hand lead on a right handed kit. Truly an extraordinary drummer
You sound really dumb.
Stop with the cliches.
He makes the most technical things look absolute effortless.
I know a lot of drummers who will have toms, symbols, shakers, and racks that they never use, but it makes their set look more "impressive." Carter Beaufort on the other hand doesn't have one superfluous piece to his set. Each piece of his set he not only uses, but uses it flawlessly. This man is truly an inspiration to all drummers.
No doubt x.....all contributing 2 the masterpiece.And done "for"the music.And somehow it doesn't sound overplayed.Wow!
Pretty sick example of a 100% legit professional drummer.
FACTS
Anyone else noticed when he flipped his stick @ about 3:46 and 4:25 ? and again near the end ? and that's not just to show off , there's a reason for it...just awesome .
to use the butt of the stick to get better sound from the rim
martyre king o p
Even crazier is how the velocity never changed on the hats when he was using the but of the stick ...
martyre king He’s in his comfort zone obviously
Everyone noticed bud
Carter is THE MAN! The song is so relaxing, but at the same time, the drums are INSANE! We're so lucky to have lived in a time where we can hear him play!
Amazing. I've always thought open handed playing was interesting to watch not to mention the freedom it affords. The fill at 2:57 where he is playing a signature on high hat and ride and does a roll across the toms with his right hand is sick. I watched it 10 times…..and loved it every time.
+El Guapo Sick AF!
I agree...freakin' amazing! So glad I made the switch to open handed!
Ha I just watched this and that stuck out to me. He does it so effortlessly.
so muuuch control; perfect fill haha
that shit is crazy!!!!
The most musical drum line in the history in my personal opinion. I could listen to this without the rest of the song, only drums, and it would still be a fenomenal song. I've been watching this now and then for over 10 year and it gets me every time. Pure wonder!
The happiest and most underrated drummer in in past few decades. A true genius.
He has an extraordinarily humble, sensitive and sophisticated playing style, and he exudes a magnificent energy from his character. Brilliant technique, mind-melting and warm
What a lovely worded tribute 👍
WOW... Absolutely Amazing
13 years later and this is still the best video on UA-cam
Dude is just a monster on the drums. It amazes me how good he is. Truly a master.
So freaking amazing, I started playing drums when I was 15, and I’m 51now, and the thing that is so evident in mr. beauford’s playing, is first and foremost his love of what he’s doing.
But what really amazed me was the freedom and Purity, of what he was doing.
That’s the only way to organically achieve the flow and the freedom he has. It’s just completely natural, thank you carter for posting
Carter is one of a kind because no one has been able to play his particular style, his timing. He's very very distinct in his way of playing. You can pick out that it's Carter in a New York second who is playing. One of the best drummers in the world in my one opinion. God Bless You Carter and your family !!!!!!
Man how I love your performance. Dynamics incredible, breaks fantastic and so effortlessly done. A joy to watch !!! Multiple times !
Best regards Norman.
I can watch or just listen to Carter till the end of time and never stop being awed and amazed at how great he is.
My goodness. Not only one if not the smoothest drummers but an undeniable master on his instrument. The entire band is so badass because of him and dave. They're all tight af. Love him
Watching a guy find what he was born to do is always fantastic. Most people can learn to do things to a certain point, and then there are those that become Carter Beauford. You know, that just take playing to the upper echelon. I've been playing drums for years and there just really is no way for me to ever to be able to get to that level. I just don't have the time and devotion to get there. I'd literally have to quit work, and just focus on drums 24/7. I feel like that is how most these guys got there in the first place, by playing no stop for years on end. Most of us are just not going to put that level of effort in to get to that point, which is why there aren't a bunch of Carters walking around. It is a pleasure and a joy to watch videos like these to watch the masters at work because you never get to see that a whole lot.
#41 + Say Goodbye are my favorite songs from DMB and among my favorite songs of all time. Carter's drumming on these tracks are just incredible. This man is a legend.
Gambit same dude I listen to those two the most
Takes your breath away . This is pure technique and years of practice and passion ❤
So much flavor in his style, my god Carter is a Savant. This man can effortlessly make his drums speak every single language correlated to music possible, its quite literally impossible to put a word on how good this man is, and how well he knows his instrument. One of the greatest of all time right here.
No words for his fluidity and chops. Just awesome.
I love Carter's playing so much but man....gotta give it up to Leroi in this song so hard. Seriously mindblowing musical genius. :( RIP guy.
Every single time, this video blows my mind. mind blowing. no words. my inspiration
HE'S GENIUS! SUCH TECHNICAL PLAYING WITH ALL THE TRIPLETS AND RUDIMENTS BUT HES SO FLUID IN THE FLOW AND ALWAYS KEEPS THE POCKET SO SEAMLESS THAT IT NEVER FEELS LIKE HES OVERPLAYING OR ANYTHING...HE IS MY FAVORITE EVER!!!!
For once, I agree with the ALL CAPS ALL THE TIME!
Not only do I have a lot of respect because he's an amazing drummer, but because he's an amazing person!
I've been Carterfied! Love when he wings his right hand at the 10" splash completely without looking or use of body movement. He probably noticed a fly land on his cymbal and just bonked it right between its eyes.
The best to ever do it. Who on the planet is more musically talented.
Not only a standout drummer, but a unique sound on top of it. This makes me smile.
I don't understand how hes not on all these UA-cam top 10 lists he is so skilled that open hand style allows him to do so
Much more.not too mention the one handed drawing m rolls across the whole kit
Probably one of my favorite drummers all time but doesn't seem to get the respect he deserves. He's fantastic!!!
I had the VHS. Thanks for the memories CB! Superb ❤
Almost 20 years since I first heard DMB and I haven't heard a drummer more awesome to my ears in any genre. Almost 20 yrs of drumming and I can't do anything close to what this guy can do. Few things musical can excite me as consistently as Carter on a pair of hi hats.
It's coming soon brotha
Nothing hes doing is too difficult, all his hi-hat work consists of is double stroke rolls. If you can hang with double stroke rolls then you just have to study his tendencies and improvising patterns. If you can't do that after 20 years then you are practicing the wrong things! Just my opinion no hate.
I felt the same way until I discovered Gavin Harrison
He is absolutely amazing!!!
@@carsondrum - His hi hat work is based off of 16th note syncopation. Yes there are some double strokes in his "go to" bag of tricks that he mixes in with 16th note syncopation but the idea you can learn double strokes on the hats, his tendencies and play like Carter is one of the greatest stretches I've heard someone state when discussing drumming.
Takes me back to good times being young....dancing in the summer sun at the Gorge. Carter is one of the best percussionists I've ever witnessed. ❤️
I COULD WATCH THIS VIDEO EVERY SINGLE DAY AND STILL BE AMAZED!
Six Minutes and Fifty One seconds of Master Class Drumming!
The sound he gets from the kit is simply magical!
2021 and I still come back to this video. Never gets old watching and listening to this awesome dude!
The dynamic control man. A literal master of his craft. Thats damn admirable.
Had this VHS watched it over and over watching it 06/08/2024 and it still hits the same !!
Simply amazing. Just makes me want to stand up and bow "we're not worthy, we're not worthy." Best drummer ever by far.
For a number of reasons to numerous to list. I will always consider Carter the GOAT!
2:56 is Sick! Great drumming.
jaw dropping coolness
One of my favourite all time drummers! I just love is style of playing💫
Absolutely amazing!!
20 years later and I still randomly watch with with the same magnitude of awe as the first time I saw this when I was 13 years old.
I just love everything about his playing and approach to the kit. The Dennis Chambers influence is awesome, too.
Man those drums really cut. So much hi-hat crisp and that snare. Inarguably one of the greatest drummers of all time
He is amazing. I have been a drum connoisseur most of my life. He is definitely in my top 5.
for me, that is the best drumming playthrough video in the universe. and believe me, i've watched so many of them
That smooth stick flip at 3:49. Nice!
Even better is when he flips it back at 4:25
Flipping the sticks in the studio! The man is so good at what he does and loves it!
my idol. the technicality and the showmanship. Top 1 for me.
I still can't get over how crisp that hat combo is
what are they?
I believe at this point in time they were a 13" zildjian k/z combo, except with the z on top and the k on bottom instead. He usually flips his hi hats around.

The 28th Anniversary of the Crash Album release.... still scary
I remember him with the band from Richmond,Va, called Secrets... a well put together band of skilled musicians. I first saw Carter and the band at a park called Chimborazo. I was blown away . That was 1 helluva band. Carter is definitely special.
Saw them in Statesboro back in the day, what a night that was!
Just incredible. Carter is absolutely one of the best ever!
This dude plays drum with true passion and feelings in the pocket
The double and triple kicks on a single
that one handed tom roll kills me everhytime i watch this! absolutely insane percussionist
DukeOfDeath27 except it's not a "roll". It's simply a triplet(for this LRR,LRR.....) Left on the flat ride and right going down the toms. I said "simply" but to get it that smooth and even just to think to use it isnt "simple". It really isnt hard to play though of you can play simple triplets leading with the left hand.
@@Mizman76 thanks for the info on the terminology. Play drums a little, but just self taught. Wouldnt consider myself a percussionist by any means
A work of art done by a master at his craft! Bravo!
One of my favorite drummers out there.
I’ll never forget this vhs in high school. Over and over and over again trying to learn this song, left hand lead. I eventually gave up. Carter is phenomenal
Officially my favorite drummer... Ever
I've been returning to this song every so often since I first discovered it about 20 years ago and it leaves me in awe every time. I'd give my left bollock to be able to play like that
This man is the Guthrie Govan of drums. His note choice and musicality is out of this world.
