Repainting a 1946 Singer 201-2 (Trash to Treasure!!!)

  • I've been asked many questions about the process of painting sewing machines so I've taken the photos I took from one I did last year and created this tutorial. There is obviously much I wasn't able to catch but I think this video of the progress shows a good bit of the basics of a complete Singer 201-2 restoration.
Each frame is only 7 seconds total so you'll have to pause it to read the dialog in some places but that pause will also give you time to view details you may have missed.
I hope this helps folks, Enjoy!!!!

There is nothing I love more than to see these masterpieces of craftsmanship restored to their former function and beauty! The 201 is a legend and considered the finest machine made in Singer's history!!

Eric, That was awesome! I have a soft spot in my heart for vintage sewing machines. I recently lost my husband and my mother a couple of weeks apart so now my passion is to quilt and go to thrift stores and buy vintage sewing machines and get them up and running again. My daughter says I'm a hoarder ha! ha! I do not share your talent as too be able to restore. If I did, I would do one in pink, as I am a breast cancer survivor! That would be awesome! Thank you for the video.

I was just reading the comments about the color. I love red. I’ve got a 1980’s Brother that is mostly red, that’s why I bought it.
This would be the equivalent of us older folks buying that red sports car we all wanted when we were young. 🍒 ❤️

By the way, while people are telling you what to do with your time, could I chip in and suggest you could make more of these videos. Holy cow. We need more Singer videos, particularly repair, but these ones on restoration are awesome.

Yeah Hondo, I do like sharing the info. There are so many questions regarding the whole project I could spend all my time shooting videos though. Honestly, I REALLY enjoy the work so I only shoot them now when I really feel I have something to share. I recently did one on the water sanding and polishing of a new coat of paint, it's right here on UA-cam but it was on a black 201-2. Thanks for the support below by the way, yeah....he got under my skin suggesting I can find better things to do with this odd talent. But then again he never asked if I liked it or not...and I can't imagine giving up the feeling of restoring these beauties. It's sorta in my blood now!!!

The 201's are very good. My 99K or "¾ machine" is sublime and oh so quiet. As far as looks go though, I love my 127 Sphinx from 1922. Best sewing machine I've used ever?....hands down a New Home.

The 201 is the best sewing machine Singer ever made. About the color. I would have painted in a dark green. The decals would have popped right out. Beautiful job! It's beyond me how you got it back together!

Soak chromed metal parts like the bobbin case in lacquer thinner for a couple of minutes, (take it completely apart first) that breaks down grease very well. Dry the part and then use a Dremel tool with wire wheel to remove the dried grease and dirt residue, this also polishes the part at the same time. Works great for me!!!

Well, I've read all your comments and appreciate the input. Upon reflection and some loosening of my initial rigitity, I agree that it is the choice of the restorer as to how they wish to represent an item. There is no doubt that the project was well done and that it was far better than allowing this beauty to rot in a landfill. I suppose it is my worry that with all the re-writing of our history that I have become a bit sensitive, and not in a productive manor. Good job Eric, a task well done in no doubt out of your dedication to these forever beauties of our past. I realize that the good which was achieved is what is noteworthy.

  • @menosmoke01
    @menosmoke01  9 років тому +79

MultiTechnicss, sorry you don't like it. To be honest I'm quite the purist too.... but when an item is well beyond restoration in its original condition, what can be the harm in having a little fun?
I'm sure you can agree that even if I'd painted it black again...it would still be black paint and replacement decals rather than the original Singer finish and decals....sooooo...since paint it paint..... what is the harm in changing the color?
I certainly won't argue that you are entitled to your opinion, and I do thank you for the nice comment regarding the restoration.
    Have a great one,
    Eric

My goodness!! This is the first ever refurbishing/ painting video I've watched . I just bought a Singer 99k, and it's in pretty good condition and I just thought it would be fun to make it look like new again. Maybe a different color.
So, I was looking for some pointers and how to's.
I knew it would be a lot of work, but man...RESPECT!!!
Taking it all apart and getting it back together perfectly is one thing I can't do. So, there's that.
But OMG, what a great job you did. Taking your time and doing it right and the attention to detail. I do that when I design and sew..and I see people half-assing things and short-cutting that it's SUCH a joy to see someone truly doing something as well as it can possibly be done, no matter the effort and time involved!
    I'm super impressed!
And that bobbin casing before and after had me speechless! BEAUTIFUL WORK, Sir! :)

Changing the color is a good idea because it indicates you are not trying to "fake" it. When a machine reaches a certain level of disrepair it's not wrong to paint it and repair the machine to it's original function. They look nice all painted up and they work great.

I know this vid is now 4 years old but in all honesty, I kinda like the colour! I'm a purist when it comes to restoring vintage goods but a lot of original Industrial/Factory type Singer Sewing Machines that I have worked on generally arrive to me in their original enamel greens, blues, reds, Browns, greys etc. So the orange most certainly does not look out of place! Great restoration and it's nice to see these old machines be put back to their former glory :)

Decals are simple water slide decals. They are quite simple to apply when small like the ones used on 201's. The difficult ones are like the ones found on a Singer 66 "Red-Eye" (or Red-Head if you prefer). Forming a larger flat decal to a curved surface can be quite difficult. For these decals I use a product called Micro-Sol which helps soften the decal and helps it stretch a bit to conform to these curved surfaces.
I'll also use it on other decals to help soften the edges once the decal is applied. This helps "ease" the sharp edge of a decal so the decal isn't so pronounced once clear coat is applied. It's a very minor difference but Micro-Sol is cheap and goes a long way.

Yes, you can wet sand the base coat with say 1000 grit paper (after it dries) and the clear coat will bring back the gloss.
I've used cans, guns and air brushes to paint my machines. The trick is to use an excellent quality paint. I LOOOOOOOOVE Rustoleum products and they continue to get nothing but better. For this machine I used Rustoleum, Cherry Red automotive enamel and clear coat. Can for the base coat and gun for the clear.

Absolutely STUNNING work ...... if you don't have a background in auto or motorcycle restoration, you should! The red REALLY accentuates all the incredible detail, too. I have quite a bit of experience in restoration work - but have yet to tackle one of the machines that I have. I have a 201-2 "dumpster find" that needs to look like one of your machines - but I gotta tell ya - after seeing YOUR results - I'm a little intimidated!! Hahaha!! GREAT work!!

I enjoyed seeing your project and got a lot of great information. Could give specifics on the etching primer and spot putty used?
