Eric, I worked for Singer for 12.5 years many of those years as a factory trained tech. This example of what can be done with a vintage machine is incredible! Its simply stunning. I hope thousands of potential vintage restorers will see this machine and realize what can be done. Just simply magnificent!
M. Lee Riley, thanks a ton for the kind words!!!! My grandmother used to work for Singer back in the 1950's, she used to demonstrate the machines capabilities to customers and I still have one of her pieces she finished. I do hope these videos help others with their restoration efforts too.
Hi. I am working on a Featherweight now. She was completely stripped, primed, painted and i just put the decals on. I had a few issues with crazing on some of the parts. You know, that wrinkling of the paint. Stripped those out again. It happened with the clear coat after days of the color coat drying. My point: I can't imagine wet sanding after all the work and here you are showing exactly that. I hope I find the nerve to do it. Thanks so much for this video. I rebuilt my 201 but didn't need to paint her. Best of my many vintage machines.
Very very very good job. 👏 I saw many videos regarding the polishing of sewing machines but i think this video is the ever best one. I have two 201k old sewing machines that their paint and decals are some scrubed , and i am looking forward to be able to repolish them again. Can you please share with us the complete process starting from paint removal up to how to redecaling again the machine surface ?
Eric, What color and brand of Black are you using? This work you are doing is fantastic. I have been renovating these machines for a while now, but matching the Japaning black has been difficult. Thank you...
I just bought a 1927 singer treadle sewing machine and the paint is totally chipped off of it. I would love to give it a new make over. Is there any way you can make a video series where you show us every detail and step that you take from start to finish of a sewing machine remodel. Also what kind of paint do you use, where do you get the decals and can I get a different decal design from the designs my machine comes with?
That is a great tribute to this machine. I love my 201's. I wish you were in California and I had the $ b/c I have a 15-30 with Tiffany decals are rescued. She is smooth as butter, but her paint is all chippy and whats left of her decals are silvered. I have a 201k with crazing. I used to work for Mercedes and had a great compound - I had used the rest up on my machines. I can't find it anywhere anymore. I have seen a lot of painted machines, but this is really excellent. It really shows that you enjoy what you are doing!
Wow! My heart stopped when I saw the sanded part and then the shiiine! Really cool vid - thx! It doesn't scrub the decals? Are you only going through clearcoat?
Hi Terri!!! No I'm not sanding through the clear coat, I'm just sanding the surface smooth and then polishing it out. When sanding with 1500 grit paper it would take a good bit of work to get all the way through to the decals.
I just got a 1951 201-2 and needs to be refurbished or painted like the one in the video. It run good. I live in New Jersey and want to know if you can redo my machine?
Hello, do you have any tips on the handling of the stitch length plate? The engravings are so shallow as is that I don’t want to sand them away while polishing the paint.
Does anyone have or know where to find how to videos for a Singer model 663? I recently got it and I thought it was made in 1941 but I’m not sure now.. it works perfectly but I’m clueless ☹️
Jaw dropping beautiful! I'd be afraid to sew with this machine for fear of damaging the finish! Looks like a museum piece! Do you sell these beauties? And, if so, where can I see them?
Thank you for the nice comments!!! My enjoyment comes from the restoration of what I find to be very beautiful and extremely high quality vintage Singers. I sell them once I'm done with them. You can see some of my other paint and restoration projects on Pinterest. Enter my name and you should be able to find my page that way. Check back soon too because I am sooooo behind in posting paint projects there.
Oh...and it would just kill me to think somebody wouldn't sew on one of my machines. I spent a great deal of time making sure they hum like new again and to think of them just sitting there would be a crime!!!! Sew on em....use em.....it'll be fine.
paulage1art I don't advertise there. I just display what I've done. Go ahead and email me directly at ericwengstrom@gmail.com if you're looking for something specific.
I also want to refurbish my two 201-2 machines, not to destroy the shine. Can you contact me and help me? Should you not have used the carnauba wax for black color?
Depends on the machine. Some are set into the pillar and then the end is bent over inside, those CAN be straightened and then tapped out but sometimes they do snap off when I'm straightening them. Even so, if that happens I'll use a small dab of epoxy and put the broken head back in when it's time to reassemble the machine. The other (older machines I believe) aren't bent over and I'll use a finish nail. I'll grind the tip to a point and then bend it over to a 90 degree angle. I'll hold it with a small pair of vice grips and line the tip up on the end of the pin protruding thru the pillar. I've used everything you can think of to tap that bent nail so that it drives the pin out but the best thing I've used is a rather large open end wrench....there is VERY little room to work up inside that pillar but I'm one patient dude and I'll eventually get that pin out. Hope this helps or at least gives you some ideas to try out.
I have a question. What kind of paint do you use and how much prep work is taken to end up with a product that is as pristine as that sewing machine. I have a 29-4 that I would love to look that clean and new! Is there a video that shows the process from beginning to end? Do you take on projects for a fee? If so how much?
I'm using PPG automotive paint and clear coat shot with an HVLP gun. (not a fancy gun, but it works) You can use any kind of paint including rattle can's (not quite as good for obvious reasons) but the results will be what you put into it. Any automotive urethane will work, heck...I've even used lacquer on a couple with great results. Practice...practice...practice. It's a ton of work and if I did this for a living I'd starve, but it's fun to do. There is a guy in Florida that makes replacement decals for the 29-4 and they look pretty good. I'm not taking any jobs on right now, I did so many I just needed a break.
Eric Wengstrom... How much would you estimate someone would charge to repaint some scratches on the machine?! Or is there a way of doing touch-ups ourselves? How would we do it?!
Richard J Leonard Hey Richard, The most authentic 15-91 decals come from www.singer66decals.com/ and the only place I know of to get 201 decals is Keeler Sales out of Florida. You can get both sets from Keeler but Tracy at singer66decals is just a much better reproduction. I've used both and can really see the difference. Good luck!!!
Just want to inform you that i clicked on the link you provided for the decals, (singer66decals) and took me to a site that shows porno. Dont understand?
I am going to be restoring painting my pfaff 145. I have a good idea how the process will go and would like to ask some questions. Could we talk over email please.

@@menosmoke01 Eric, your videos not only help people to fix their vintage machines but they inspire them to do so. Thanks ! God Bless you .

I swapped my modern heavy duty machine for two working 201’s 🥰 I wish you lived in Qld to repaint one of them because you do it so beautifully!
Eric,

I have used your instruction to fix my own machines. Works beautifully. Thanks.
I see, thank you! Your videos are so excellent. Thanks for taking the time.
Great work
Man incredible work!!! I own a 31-20. I'm looking to wax it or clear coat it to make it a bit more shiny.

Great job. How do you get the detail on the stitch plate?
Great video!
When applying the products do you have to wait any length of time before applying the next product?
Can I clarify, what you’re sanding is the black paint you added or shellac added over the paint?
Wow! My heart stopped when I saw the sanded part and then the shiiine! Really cool vid - thx! It doesn't scrub the decals? Are you only going through clearcoat?

So did this machine have a clear coat on it when you started and not when you ended?
The machine was stripped, painted and then clear coated. This video was about how to polish the clear coat to a very high gloss finish.
I am going to be restoring painting my pfaff 145. I have a good idea how the process will go and would like to ask some questions. Could we talk over email please.
