  • Today we have an Olympia Japanese Vintage Sewing Machine with a made in the USA motor. It is about 3 hours condensed into just shy of 20 minutes. Watch over my shoulder as I go through this machine, clean, lubricate and adjust.
Off screen I have 2 ways that I clean the hardware. Everything without paint gets put in the ultrasonic cleaner with parts cleaner liquid in it. The painted parts go into the vat of Evaporust.
Sit back and relax as I clean this machine and test it out. Let me know what you think!

Heavens to Betsy! Thanks so much for your time. I could never get this back together. I’m running on down to my local machine repair man and pay whatever he asks for.

I found your channel while looking for the manual for an Olympia similar to this one, Olympia Electra 140. No luck yet, with finding a manual, but I feel like I can clean it up after watching your videos, thank you.

I notice that you spray denatured alcohol (methylated spirits here in Australia) into the workings of the machine. Is this to remove the excess oil/grease? How thoroughly do you wipe it off, and is there a risk of rusting the parts if I use it for my machines? Lastly, does the Evaporust remove the paint when it goes into the vat? Thanks SMRG 😊😊

Nice vintage machine I never thought of going to thrift shops to check out for sewing machines. I am looking for a leather walking foot machine at the moment don’t think I will find some but worth a try.
I have a question how much on average does a sewing machine repair person make?

Very interesting, but it would have been more informative had you explained what you were doing and what you were trying to accomplish in edited format. I'm wondering about whether you ever need to replace worn or damaged parts and where you would find them for random machines. I also would like to understand the economics of this. Is this machine worth investing 3 hours of skilled labor? Or is it just a hobby or labor of love?

Enjoyed video. Since you work on vintage machines maybe you can help me with problem I'm having with my Necchi Esperia. When turning wheel to lock to wind bobbin the needle still goes up and down. I have tried everything and can get it just wind bobbin. Haven't been able to find repair manual on it and there is no one close, within a hundred miles, that I'll check working on them nor have I been able to find out where there is an authorized dealer/repair shop in my area. If you could help it would be greatly appreciated.

I have a second hand Brother Bradford machine Model C JA 28. It runs when plugged even though I'm not touching the foot pedal. Any thoughts? It does not have on or off switch. There are 2 plugs attached to it thhat you then plug into the outlets labeled motor or lights that is part of the foot pedal plug. The light does not come on but the motor starts going as if i was pressing the control. Appreciate any feedback. I'm a complete beginner and took on more than I can chew.

If i sent you a picture of a "federal" vintage sewing machine "zig zag" mechanism, could u tell me or help me if its a spring that i need? When you turn the zigzag knob, you can see from the inside, the knob is not attached to make the lever turn to zigzag.. goodhousekeeper made the same machine model 609. Mine is the same, its just badged "Federal"

I just got a sewing machine similar to this one (it’s a universal model MSAZ also Japanese). I already cleaned it and oiled it but it seems to be going pretty slow. I know it’s not a problem in the knee pedal because it works fine when winding a bobbin. Any suggestions?

Clean the motor's armature with a special ceramic stone. Stiff innards might mean crud is still lingering somewhere.

The old mechanic machines seem to be a lot easier to work on, in comparison to the new ones, like the Juki Hzl you reviewed. Is it true?

I have a 1970-1980 (don't know the exact year) German sewing machine Privileg 470. I'm a beginner and it's super easy to work with. It doesn't have plastic parts that can easily break, it's a great piece for my needs. But everyone has different tastes and needs, so a vintage machine may not be for everyone 😊

Wait? You can rinse off Krud Kutter with ethyl alcohol? This other UA-cam guy puts them in the shower! (Bad idea!)
    Can you elaborate?
