Singer 401A Sewing Machines from the 1950s. Refreshing these Beautiful Machines - Part 2.

- After assessing these two beautiful Singer 401A sewing machines, I found I could not get the motor out of one of the machines easily. Thanks to a kind commenter, he pointed out someone may have jammed in a motor from a Singer 700 series machine which may make it very difficult to remove so I decided to move on to the second machine.
It needs a good clean up and some of it's parts are suffering from light corrosion so I decide to make a good machine out of the two.

Keep showing the cleaning process, I love seeing a neglected machine shine again.
Great insight into how to restore these classic machines, the cleaning is fine no need to make longer, the mechanical expertise is what most people value because that is a specialised skill that most do not posses. Thank you !
Thanks for sharing your extensive knowledge. Your videos gave me confidence to tackle bringing a 306k back from an extended neglected time. I found to clean it, I used RP7 (WD40) sprayed over the machine. That way if a little got into an oil hole it didnt really matter. In fact I did use RP7 to get it moving as it was idle for so long it was frozen solid. RP7 all over, inside and into the oil galleries and after an hour or so it just came free with very little force. A short run and then a full lube with correct oil while I detailed the entire machine. It now looks, runs and sounds like new!
Tested my flagship Singer 41G after lube recording before after lube Wow
so silky smooth and powerful
The modern singers are getting shelved for the moment This machine is incredible The stitches are so good
Hello, I just picked one of these up yesterday. It is in terrific shape for being 64 years old. I truly appreciate your videos. I find your camera detail and commentary to be among the best on UA-cam for this particular subject. So much so, that one of the criteria for me choosing a particular model is based on whether you've made a video on it! Because I feel more confident I can assess and fix issues that might be present by reviewing your videos. So, if you haven't heard it lately... you are appreciated!
That's awesome! Thanks.
Just brought home my new flagship Singer 401G needs good clean lube
I expect it will exceed the performance of my other machines
Beautiful! And just in time - last month I picked one up. It needs a tune up and you make it look so easy! Thanks!
Thanks.
Have 1 of these. It was Mom's. Giving me trouble lately. Nice 2 see this model worked on.
They are beautiful machines.
Considering the fact that I was cleaning and oiling mine along with you I could have seen even more detail without complaint. Unlike you I don't have a second machine that I can use the parts from. Thanking for sharing.
Glad I could help!
I like watching the cleaning👍
Keep cleaning!
It is a Beauty!
....also your Cat is very fine looking!
I totally agree. The colours are striking on the machine but 5he kiwi cricketers look great in those colours.
For some odd reason the bobbin tension on the Singer #401 and the #500 is always tight underneath.. When Singer introduced the "Auto-Reel or early Touch and Sew" machines they placed a device that "followed" the thread ( It was a "ring" mechanism ) and they produced the best zig zag and satin stitches.. I know many people do not care for those machines, but they ( early models ) were well made and produced a great stitch..
These parts are easily purchased on eBay.
I have a 401a sewing machine that was so heavily used the paint was worn away by the thread on the bottom front of the nose.
This might be of help. You could try removing the motor from the good machine to see how easy these motors are to remove. This makes for easy service of the worm drive gear. I think the bad machine was dropped and broke the castings. I've enjoyed this video, thanks
Once again, I just love learning from you. I love this machine. I have one among my collection. Do you have a vîdeo of a full service?
Not yet!
Great video, I noticed the replacement bulb you fitted is longer and therefore lines up with the glass lens better. Are these still available and if so can you tell me the bulb type please? many thanks from the UK.
Thanks. I haven't seen any of the long bulbs new for a long time. I have a stash of used long ones I use for machines like this.
When you were putting the plate back on what did you touch to lift the screws to slide it in the drop it again???
From memory it's the drop feed lever.
I love your oil” dispensing tool”, is it available to buy somewhere? Love the video!
Thanks. The oil bottles come with old Elna Supermatic sewing machines.
@@InStitches thanks!
do you still have the tensioner assembly from the 401 that you took off, if so i would like to buy it from you
Sorry but I put it back on the machine so it's not available.
What brand of oiler is it you use and where do I buy one of them.
Cheers
It's an oiler from an old Elna. You can see them here - ua-cam.com/video/kxrLoqxypTA/v-deo.html
What spray are you using to clean?
I'm using a general cleaner. Make sure it's not a harsh cleaner.
Cleaning is ok.
