Wow! This is amazing! Thanks, Kate! I loved hearing everybody's thoughts on why they love Victorian literature. I love it because of its beautiful use of language and universal themes in literature.
The rigidity of class & gender structures, as well as the ever looming presence of death, create an intensity of drama that our more egalitarian age & medical advances would make implausible. There's also a constant acknowledgment of the elements and the struggle to keep warm, which lends atmosphere & makes the comfort of the fireside all the more cozy & satisfying.
Thank you to everyone who participated! This is absolutely fantastic! I feel so enriched and encouraged to think even more deeply and broadly about why I love Vic Lit!
I always look forward to these collaborative videos and the enthusiasm and affection people have for Victorian literature. Two things, one, all the people who don’t have booktube channels should have them, I’d definitely watch them, and two, does anyone else think that Jane Eyre and North and South might be the favorite Victorian reads? 😉
Thank you. 😊 It was nice to hear from everyone. I learned about Victorian Literature through this subsection of Booktube. I’m so glad. I had already read Jane Eyre and loved it but I didn’t know that Victorian Literature was a thing. Since discovering booktube, I’ve learned of so many more! Thomas Hardy, Elizabeth Gaskell, Emily and Anne Brontë.. What I love about Victorian Literature is how long they can be, and just being able to take my time, how they have always been worth it for me to read at the end, the way characters are carefully developed, and the scenic descriptions, and how there are great characters to learn from, and we can still learn from the bad things that happen as well. And someone else mentioned how accessible they can be. (And also just practically speaking, I don’t have to worry about an explicitly detailed intimate scene popping up out of nowhere.) Happy Victober to all 🍂🍁📚
Happy Victober, everyone! Thank you so much for this wonderful video, Kate. ❤️ Loved getting to be a small part of it and loved even more hearing everyone else’s thoughts. Happy reading to all!
Happy Victober everyone! Thank you Kate and everyone for putting this together. Wish Darryl F. Had a channel loved his insight on why he loves Victorian literature.
I was interested in the points made about the industrial north of England. Can I recommend Hard Times by Charles Dickens? You might have read it but if not, it’s a real eye opener, shocking really. Thank you Kate for this collaboration. You are all such interesting and well read people!
What a wonderful way to start Victober: listening to fellow readers talk about their love for Victorian literature! It fills my heart with joy. I'm honoured to be part of the video (despite my camera quality!) Thank you Kate! I hope everyone discovers new amazing reads this month!
I had a huge smile on my face duing this whole thing. I have some readers in my real life, but except for a few people I've turned into Trollope fans, they don't read Victorian novels. It was great to get the sense, however briefly, that the whole world reads Victorian lit.
Wonderful kickoff video for Victober! Thank you so much to Kate and everyone who put their thoughts together about why they love Victorian literature. Inspiring!
In today’s busy world of tweets and sound bytes, what pure joy it was to stop and meditate deliciously and deliberately about what we love regarding Victorian literature! So many contemplative thoughts here, with all of the heart and soul that make Victober wonderful each year. Thanks for including me, Kate. This was a pleasure! ❤
Loved hearing the thoughts of everyone. Both similar and unique loves for Victorian literature were expressed. I have many Victorian novels on my TBR and I’m exciting to read a few more this Victober. Thanks Kate and all!
My heart is all warm and fuzzy as I listen to my peeps talk about why they love Victorian literature. I love spending time in the past where morals still meant something. Victorian literature is easier to understand than Regency. The language changed somewhat and it is more understandable. Female writers got more intricate and advanced in plot as times changed. Women were given somewhat more rights and took more rights. There was an explosion of writers, especially women writers. The development of certain genres grew. And we never get tired of Sherlock Holmes.
This was so enjoyable and really makes me want to read more Victorian literature going forward. Most of the literature that I’ve read from this genre was many years ago. I think that I would enjoy the richness of the writing, etc. much more now. Thanks for the introduction to many of the Book Tubers that I was unfamiliar with too! I’ve got my list for Victober, but I’ll be happy if I can get through at least one and start a second, then just incorporate them into my reading more.

And sigh. It’s Victober! This is my month. These are my people. Thanks for taking the time to do this everyone and Kate for putting it all together xx
You're welcome, Amanda! What are you hoping to read most?

The best thing about Victober is listening to what other people love and what others read. ❤
HAPPY VICTOBER!! Thanks for giving me the opportunity to share my thoughts. This is such a great way to kick off our celebration!

Jo, I totally agree about the non channel participants starting some!
North and South and Jane Eyre do seem to have such a hold on readers.
Thank you for including me, Kate! Can’t wait to see the other clips.
Thank you. 😊

I'm so thrilled how this turned out 😍 Thank you again for all the work you put into this!
Wonderful kickoff video for Victober! Thank you so much to Kate and everyone who put their thoughts together about why they love Victorian literature. Inspiring!
I ❤ the poetical writing of Victorian literature. You can tell that these writers read and/ or wrote poetry because of the style.
That's such a good point! I hadn't thought about the strong effect regular consumption of poetry would have!
