Seasonal Bookshelf Challenge Announcement!
Sigh. 😌 What a lovely chat, Kate. ♥️ Molly 😉😍!!! Do the next thing. Yes!
I love Mary Stewart books but I rarely see a favourite of mine mentioned - The Little Broomstick. It was a children's book . Shirley Hughes did the precious illustrations. Well worth a read if you're a fan of MS.
Wonderful performance! Apparently Kalkbrenner was much admired as a virtuoso in his day by the likes of Chopin who moved in the same Parisian circles.
My first Victorian toe dipping was Wuthering Heights and I absolutely hated it! My next was Jane Eyre, and it was mind blowing! I seriously thought it would be my #1 for the rest of my life. Then I entered the land of Dickens! I am a huge fanboy now and my favorite book that I am sure will never be changed, is David Copperfield! I am 60 percent finished with all his works, and I have absolutely loved every word!!! I also really loved Wilkie Collins and the Moonstone! I am looking forward to experiencing The Woman in White!
🍂💛
You havnt lived until you've read David Copperfield by dickens the charactors just live on
I’ve been wanting some Scottish Victorian literature so I’m definitely going to be checking out some of these that you mentioned! I Hope you enjoy the Mystery of Mrs. Blencarrow. I feel the same as you do about Margaret Oliphant, some of her books I love and some aren’t quite my thing.
Thank you, Kate! Yes! to the David Copperfield series with Daniel Radcliffe: Maggie Smith IS Betsy Trotwood. Also has one of my favorite Victorian quotes from Aunt Betsy to David: "Never be mean in anything; never be false; never be cruel." Words to live by. Tears me up every time. I just finished The Heir Of Redclyffe, which I enjoyed, especially Charles, although all her characters are so real and rounded. One day soon I'll get to Wives and Daughters. Happy Victober!
@@kathleencraine7335 Wow! I had forgotten that Betsy Trotwood quote - words to live by indeed! So glad you enjoyed The Heir of Redclyffe!
Kate, my heart just dropped when you where telling about Peter’s diagnosis. Sending him all the best wishes for recovery, and your family will definitely be in my thoughts and prayers through these next months. ❤🙏 I’m so glad you’re still determined to enjoy Victober and that you have a lot of fun plans for the boys too. You just gave me so many more titles to add to my Victober Reservoir! 😅 Lavengro and the Tower of London really sound fascinating. Harry Lloyd, the one who played Herbert Pocket in the 2011 Great Expectations is Dickens great great great grandson. He’s done some Dickens audio book narration for audible, too, which was very cool. Ooh that Bronte puzzle!! 😍I’ve seen several people on booktube talk about it and I’m extremely tempted to get one!
@@jamiedianne6778 Thank you, Jamie! I think a number of my followers feel quite invested in Peter since they've seen him in vlogs and videos over the years. The kindness and well wishes people has been shown has been absolutely amazing. If you would like to follow Peter's Caring Bridge site please message me on Instagram and I can share it with you. The Tower of London ended up completely blowing me away! I was so wrapped up in that whole world. So grateful for Victorian Literature even moreso in this time!
I love your thoughts on The Belton Estate. I felt the same way reading The Vicar of Bullhampton, specifically the grace of Mr. Fenwick. Thank you, Kate, for suggesting this wonderful novel to start off Victober🧡🧡🧡🙏 and for this terrific vlog. (Samantha Morton and Ciaran Hinds, just sayin'😉)
Loved hearing about your journey with Victorian literature!
This is such a great video, Kate! I didn't know those early stories about your Victorian reading journey. So fun! I loved our mutual goal last year for reading Vic Lit. That was so much fun! I love Dickens on screen too. I have a hankering to re-watch that Nicholas Nickleby too.
Hi Kate… I really enjoyed this video. I do read Victorian literature but I take it slow. I’m so embarrassed to admit this, but I have never read Jane Eyre. I’ve seen the movies and I think I know the story, but this month I am actually picking up the book and reading it slowly and loving it. I have been participating In Victober for several years and I enjoy everyone’s videos, but yours are my favorites. Your intro music and sketches just scream Victober🍂
That switch has just been lit for me this year 🤗
I loved Wives and Daughters too. I’ve taken to listening to what Victorian novels I find in audiobooks, I don’t have the patience anymore to read hundreds of words on paper when someone can read them to me! Thank you for your videos.
Thank you! This was wonderful! I'm a newbie to this scene and I want to read everything. I just finished reading Oliver Twist for the first time. I was glad to have lived under a rock previously, because not knowing anything really made me love this story more. I was there. I think if I reread it in a couple months I would feel the same. I loved it so much.
I hope to read Return Of The Native soon. I'm sure a lot of those novels you read would make wonderful adaptations.Alas we are living in the age of the deplorably transient quick hit.
I'm glad that you are getting so much comfort out of Victober! I'll keep both you and Peter in my prayers. My health hasn't been the best recently either (mostly burnout that makes the pain come back) so I'm keeping my Victober reading very low key. At the moment I'm rereading Jane Eyre because I need the comfort but I'm also hoping to read Man and Wife by Wilkie Collins but we'll see if I even get into that.
I did know there were good versions of The Moonstone and Nicholas Nickleby to watch! I am putting them on my tbw list!
I loved your story about getting drawn in Great Expectations! I'm so glad you did this tag so I could hear about how you came to love Victorian literature!
I love this Kate! I'm excited to bawl with reading The Heir of Redclyffe soon😅
Kate, I love hearing about people’s journeys with Victorian lit and booktube has been the most significant part of my own, especially you and Katie! I had no idea The Heir of Redclyffe was so emotional so am extra specially looking forward to getting to it in December!
Such a great video, Kate!! Made me SO excited to get to both The Heir of Redclyffe and The Cloister and the Hearth over this next few months!! Looking forward to the “heave sobbing”!! 😂 In the best possible way!!
I haven't cried like that in SO long from a book! I think I'm in need of it tho😅
I loved this!! ❤
Totally agree with you about how so the film of David copperfield is sooo good. I love wife’s and daughters too 😊
Zelah Clarke and Timothy Dalton are the best Jane and Rochester, the first one I watched and I had to read it before the series ended, 1983 (me aged 11).
Totally agree.
Hi Kate, Sending you and your Family good Vibes! Sounds like your 2024 is kind of like mine. My Dad got sick with cancer and it didn’t look good and I had to move to help out. Six months on and my Dad who is very tough is doing great!! He gets tired a lot and can’t do as much as he use to and it frustrates him of course. I tell him. Dad you got hit by a Semi . Cut yourself some slack.😅 They really are doing great things in cancer medicine. Glad you are doing the things that give you energy and doing self care! ❤
I loved this Kate! Before you said which character you identify with most/are most like, I was thinking Molly Gibson! So it must be true 😂
Are Charlotte Mary Yonge's books out of print?!
@@scripturesandstories Yes but most are available as ebooks on project Gutenberg.
@@katehowereads thank you!!
Prayers for your son and family in this difficult time. I am so happy to find your channel and others who love Victorian lit! I also loved your mention of morning time, we do morning time as well :)
I just ordered Pillars of the House! So excited 😊
I hope we have some more Victober reading sprints in 2024. I miss Jennifer’s weekend sprints ❤
@@Molly-s6u With my son having leukemia and being in and out of the hospital + my chronic illness I'm not able to do that this year. I talked about doing much less in my announcement video but maybe you missed that.
@@katehowereads I understand completely. Katie had mentioned possibly doing a weekend sprint so was hoping to see it all weekend. No worries though. Wishing your family well
This is a lousy analysis of Thomas Hardy. Would not recommend sitting through this video. Amateurish and mediocre.
My favorite Dickens novel is The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club. It is so dang funny. The edition I first read is very old and has that full title. It wasn't my first Dickens but I've re-read it many times. For Victober, I'm reading The Warden (Anthony Trollope) and Cranford (Elizabeth Gaskell). They may not make it into October, though, because I just started The Priory (Dorothy Whipple) and it's quite a long book. Love your channel, Kate.
I've considered buying that edition of Spurgeon and the Psalms before; now I feel that I must!
The Highland Lady diaries sound like a great follow up to the Kilvert Diaries that I am currently enjoying! I'll have to add that to next years Victober TBR!
An 'explosion of a novel' is such a great way to describe Wuthering Heights!
I find this so interesting. I have a diametrically opposed opinion of some of these books, but I love hearing why some did or did not work for you. My first Dickens was A Tale of Two Cities and I loved it, but I haven't read it for over 40 years so I want to reread and see how I like it now. My first Thomas Hardy was Tess of the D'Urbervilles and I hated it, but I have enjoyed most of his novels that I have read. And finally I read Silas Marner as my first Eliot and I didn't like it. It was many years ago and I suspect my feelings would be different now since I loved Middlemarch, Daniel Deronda, and Adam Bede.
Thomas Mann, Hesse, Huxley, and Nabokov
Just found your channel, new subscriber.

Praying for you all. I'm so sorry uou are going through this.
