February 2024 TBR II We Love Jenny and Febregency
Poor little guy. I hope he is home and well soon.
Love these weekly catch-ups! I agree about JJW! Super easy to get into, great atmospheric reads when I'm in the mood, but yes I do need space between her books as they definitely can blend together. Ahhh the Christmas Things chat! That was just so so fun!! Love Charlotte's Web! Need to re-read it.
Hello Kate! I hope you are doing well. I really enjoyed your video. I especially enjoyed the book with the Civil War maps. I have been to Vicksburg several times. My father was born and raised in Natchez. I do not hear a Mississippi accent when you speak like I heard my dad's. Keep up the great work. Have a great day!
I’m loving the sparkly countdown numbers and the embracing of the chaotic reading energy! I’ve read barely anything this month so am hoping my reading mojo comes back in time for December! 🤞
I like the sound of green rider I thinking of listen to it .❤
Well, you did it. Although I love the fantasy genre, I 've had no interest in Ladyhawke for almost 40 years. But the theme you mentioned in it, of performing acts of disinterested good for others suddenly makes it sound rather wonderful. Thanx for another great tip! Wishing you and your family a happy Thanksgiving together.
Thinking of Peter and those amazing Civil War maps! What a great find! I completely agree with you about Miss Read--although I loved the Fairacre books, Mrs Pringle storyline was so annoying it kept them from being perfect. The Thrush Green books feel more comforting and enjoyable. Fun fact just for you: I was reading about the life of E. M. Delafield (author of Diary of a Provincial Lady series) and learned that she was a huge fan of Charlotte Mary Yonge.
The map of the civil war battlegrounds looks so interesting.
I just read The Wood at Midwinter, really interesting!! That archive with the maps and the information about the battles looks fantastic! What a great idea. Praying for the continuous healing of Peter and sending love for all your family ❤ So glad that you could find solace in books 📚
I hope you and your family have a wonderful, healthy Christmas! I recently listened to The Christmas Hirelings on your recommendation and I really loved it! It was so cozy and sweet! I look forward to your thoughts on The Green Rider-I've had it on my kindle for awhile now but the length intimidates me and I don't know anyone who's read it 😅
thank you!
I’m so glad you’re enjoying Green Rider! I’ve enjoyed what I’ve read so far. I still need to read Winterlight. From what I remember it doesn’t get super graphic or violent. ❤
I love these videos, Kate. I love seeing what you pick up at the library. I hope that Peter feels better soon and you and your family have a merry, cozy holiday season. ♥️🎄
Lovely video, Kate! I have been looking forward to my Advent reading since last Advent. I have a devotional that uses R.S. Thomas's poetry as a point of reflection. And thanks to you helping me decide, I can't wait for Pilgrim's Inn! I just finished book 142 for my Vic Lit list! Only eight more to go this year! Oh no! I'm sorry Hopes and Fears didn't live up to its early promise for you. I thought Phoebe ended up being the stronger character. 🤔
I appreciate that you take the time to make Booktube videos, even though your son is sick. I hope he gets better. I have enjoyed the live action Disney movies, but some of the criticisms of the live action Mulan have made me apprehensive. BTW your discussions on presidential biographies motivates me to want to read my Jefferson one and the ones about the Adams family.
I used to criticize the Israelites for their unbelief and not trusting. And that carried over into the Jews like you were reading in 2 Chronicles... and then I look around and see people have never changed. Still the falling away from the God that loves them/us so much (not to mention the things we do as a people now that are similar to what they did throughout all the King's and judges).
Chaotic reading energy is going around! I hope you continue to enjoy Green Rider. 🙂
This is my first year trying an Advent devotional, I picked up a copy of Winter Fire by GK Chesterton but I am excited to try it. I’ve been listening to The Bible In A Year podcast since the summer so I’m currently at the story of David. Not sure where I will end up by Christmas lol. I’m a bit nervous to try a devotional but I also really want to make this Advent more meaningful, especially since last December was the beginning a lot of trials for my mother and our whole family. I picked up a copy of a book called 52 Simple Ways to Make Christmas Special. I’m hoping to find some things in there to do with my kids this season, the book goes from Advent to Christmas to Epiphany. I totally understand “reading for your life”. It’s been a struggle to get back in. Funnily enough, last year when all the issues with my Mom started, I read Wintering. I would sit alone in the early morning and read a section at a time, almost like a devotional. I did think of you because I remembered you loving it. It was definitely so meaningful and still is. I was reading my Mom’s copy and she had made a few notes in the margins. I will be praying for you all and I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving. Very excited to hear how your plans progress!
I'm loving this video series of your's! That's very true that Anne doesn't feel like herself in the later books. I still love them, but that's the biggest weakness for me. I think LMM was tired of writing about Anne at that point 😭
@@meghanthestorygirl4581 Thank you, Meghan! Yes, I think I might get tired of a character after a while. It would be quite a lot of time to spend with them!
This makes me so happy how much you're enjoying Rilla. One of my all time faves! Also, I'm so glad you have those recliner chairs and I admire how much gratitude you are finding through all this ❤
I'm so glad you had such a good Victober, especially this year ❤
@@meghanthestorygirl4581 Thank you, Meghan!
I love Adventures in Odyssey!! It's been a while since I've listened to them, but I love that your whole family is into it now! Also, that makes me so happy you're reading Rilla! I adapted it for the stage a number of years ago and played Rilla 😊
@@meghanthestorygirl4581 I finished Rilla today and it gets a huge 5 stars from me!
I love how Juliet Stevenson is able to portray all of the characters.
I wrote somewhere that there is another similarity. Fanny is Sonya in "War And Peace", while Julia is Vera Rostova, the insignificant sister. That would make Maria a spoilt Natascha ... Just that the Bertrams are rich and Edmund does not have to marry rich to save the family.
I have enjoyed the Jaime Jo Wright that I've read so far, but I've only read a few. I am not a big fantasy fan honestly. I rarely read it because it just doesn't really appeal to me much.
My favorite EB White is The Trumpet of the Swan but Charlottes Web is also delightful.
@@myreadinglife8816 The Trumpet of the Swan is also wonderful! I especially enjoyed recognizing the different Philadelphia sites that are mentioned in it.
I think that's a world-class misreading of Jude, but you have a right to it! I first read it in 1969, and still remember how I felt at the end. I get that Jude's story doesn't chime with your view of how people ought to conduct themselves, but you're extremely ungenerous to his and everyone else's human frailities. (We all have them.) I wonder if there's something transatlantic going on here? We understand that Americans typically believe that anyone can achieve anything if they try hard enough, and that optimism is commendable: it's just that it isn't really borne out by real-life experience. Jude's tragedy is that as an autodidact, a poor and literally obscure figure, he finds that his intelligence, hard work and quality of thought count for nothing: all the institutions and professions are closed to him, and he runs out of his few options. OK, Hardy piles on the disasters, after all this is fiction, but he wasn't inventing the basic problems faced by poor people in 19th century rural England who wanted to better themselves, or the exclusivity of the professions, or the brutality of the class structure. He also had to big up his episodes for the book's initial seralisation. I know it isn't a laugh a minute, but it's full of interesting ideas as well as drama, e.g. the 1890s concept of the New Woman, and evolving debates on gender relations, etc.
@@NedGough If I'm looking for interesting ideas as well as drama I love Elizabeth Gaskell and George Eliot much more for that sort of thing. Considering the fact that I have known friends and family that have been assaulted, experienced addiction, lost close family members, and lost employment that have actively decided to not view themselves as victims. There is a lot to be said for not making a tragic situation even more tragic. Jude essentially has a giant temper tantrum when life doesn't go how he is hoping. If I took a leaf out of his book I would make everyone around me miserable because of my frustration with living with chronic illness for 6 years or my 10 year old having leukemia. I don't think this is an American concept so much as it's a much more modern concept that the point of life is being happy which is very much at play in Jude the Obscure. Chasing happiness is futile.
I tried to read Anne of Ingleside and her housekeeper (?) kept addressing Anne as Mrs. Doctor Dear. It was more than once or twice. It didn’t seem like an endearment. I just couldn’t continue. 🤨I’ve only read the first five. Maybe that’s being petty but it turned me off to everything else.
I started reading Charlotte's Web to Ginni and Justin last week, and it's so fun to revisit it! When you said you weren't exactly enjoying Hopes and Fears but that it would be memorable, that captured how I'm feeling about David Copperfield. There are points that are funny, but Uriah Heap is such a creep that I have to stop sometimes because I can't handle how awful he is. However the book will definitely stick with me. Gaskell's anger about her book being lent out and coming back damage! 😆
@@shortstuff1177 So lovely that you are doing it as a readaloud!...It's so funny because Dickens is so hit or miss for me but I LOVE David Copperfield! 🤣 Uriah Heap is such a giant creep!
I have had Echoes Among the Stones by Jaime Jo Wright on my shelf for so long and now you have got me wanting to pick it up! Another lovely chatty video. I definitely look forward to these each week. 😊
@@jensreadinglife I would love to hear what you think of Jaime Jo Wright! Her books are so captivating. Thank you, Jen!
@ I will be sure to share when I read her. 😊
@@katehowereads I will let you know!
It was so cosy to hang out with you like this! I’m glad you had a good victober! 🥰
Mary stewart was quite a handsome 👩 woman...i love her cooking and gardening tips too...ooops 😮😅
This is such a great list! I love all the Gaskell on here ❤ And this makes me want to read Can You Forgive Her. It sounds so good!
I totally agree, Phineas is the worst character! The series does get better for the last couple.
OMG!! That was absolutely AMAZING! I loved all the variations on the theme (is that where that expression comes from!). And variation 6! I had no idea that was coming. This was fabulous and such a beautiful performance. Thank you so much for putting this piece out into the world. And WOW MOLLY!!
I agree with Katie from Books and Things regarding the wonderful ending to the Palliser series with The Prime Minister and The Duke's Children. The 1970s BBC adaptation of this series is so brilliant too!
I love your weekly updates. For Fantasy I would recommend the Song of the Siren it’s the first in the Raven Son Series.
@@amandalillie4543 Thank you for this recommendation, Amanda!!
Have you tried The Dark Is Rising series by Susan Cooper? I think you might enjoy it.
@@Bookslovejenna You know my reading taste because I have read that series and love it!
Sigh ... you said "Betsy's Wedding" 😍
@@shelliclarke5563 That book is just so glorious!!
Okay i had to leave a second comment. Taran the Wanderer 4th book in the Prydain chronicles is one of my favorite middle grade books of all time. I highly encourage the audible version. The first book is just okay, it was hard for me to keep track of all the characters, but they get better as you go. As i said the the 4th book is for me perfection.
@@martinezfamily5425 Good to know this going in! I think Peter also favored the latter books.
Hi Kate! Just wondering, what world geography curriculum are you using with your boys?
@@juliequezada7504 Our Great Big World by Notgrass History. It is excellent! Beautiful pictures and a scripture verse tied into each lesson.
Hi Kate I am loving watching your musings, I did miss you while you were on your needed break. I read the Lincoln photo biography on my Newbery journey it is very good. I love your picks for home school they sound so good i have been praying for Peter and your family regularll, for your health and strength also. I wanted to mention a book to you that was helpful to me with some of my health issues. Breathe by James Nestor. While I don't align with him spiritually, I found most of the science to be very sound. I feel its something every person should be aware of. It has changed me for the good. God's Blessings to you over the holiday season !
@@martinezfamily5425 Thank you so much for praying for Peter and our family! So kind of you to recommend Breathe! My husband loved that book and is a big mouth taping advocate.
Love your new intro. ❤️😀
@@alldbooks9165 Thank you, Doris! 🥰
Kate, did you ever finish The Wingfeather Saga? For some reason, I think I remember you saying that you fizzled out on that series! The payoff at the end is pretty glorious and very rewarding!
@@darrylfriesen Peter completely loved the ending! He said it was very satisfying. I very much want to love those books but found myself disconnected from the characters 😭
@ 😅
Kate try the Song of Seare trilogy by Carla Lauraeno. Published by Enclave Publishing. It's clean, Celtics inspired, and Christian allegorical. First Book is the Oath of the Brotherhood. Cover are all gorgeous. Non- Christian Historical fantasy is the Gael Song trilogy by Shauna Lawless. First Book is The Children of God's and Fighting Men. It is set in ancient Ireland. First book is world building that pays off in Book 2.
@@protagonistspub Thank you for these lovely recommendations!
@@katehowereads you're very welcome :) I hope one of them works for you on your quest for enjoyable fantasy.
If you can get John Langton narrating The Chronicles of Prydain, do it. He is excellent!
Yes and they get better as you go! So good.
Oh and if you go to Gettysburg, don't forget there is an Eisenhower National Historic Site there to go along with your presidential project!
I enjoyed hearing about your enjoyment of the Harriet Tubman biography. I wanted to recommend "Escape from Slavery," by Doreen Rappaport. It's written at maybe a 2nd-3rd grade level and includes several (4?) true stories about...well, escapes from slavery. I enjoyed reading this even as an adult because the stories were so interesting. One of the stories has been written about recently in the book "Master Slave Husband Wife," by Ilyon Woo.
@@elizabethjonczyk6818 That sounds like such a good book!
Thank you for sharing that fun fact about Andrew Jackson and the Bullet-that is insane! I never knew he was so scrappy! Maybe check out The Iron Ring by the same author as Chronicles of Prydain. It felt more like a fairytale than a fantasy, though it is undoubtedly fantasy and a standalone. It's about young king Tamar who offers hospitality to a king passing through his land in the middle of the night, and they play a game of chance where Tamar loses his kingdom. The older king gives him an iron ring and commands Tamar to come visit his faraway kingdom-except in the morning nobody remembers this king and his ensemble at all and it's passed off as a dream. Only Tamar can't believe it because he has the iron ring still. He's determined to keep his promise and so sets out on this quest to visit the king. It's whimsical but has it's serious moments and a fun cast of characters. I think you might enjoy it!
@@the_bookish_took5348 The Iron Ring sounds so so good!
I love that Peter wants to know more about the Civil War. Being in GA with lots of historic sites here, definitely fed into my interest when i was 13 and we had a year long GA history class. I know you have a lot there too which will be great to visit.
Sorry you're struggling with fantasy so much. I would give you suggestions but I have none. I like a different type of fantasy that's not very cozy. 😅
@@Thecatladybooknook_PennyD Oooh yes! Getting to visit sites really does make it come alive. I grew up near Vicksburg and it was fascinating to me to visit.
