That's funny you talking about middle grade March because I just went through my Goodreads and my library to see what they had and I now have a list done. It may change of course but I am so excited to read all the middle grade. 😊
Agree about Rosemary Sutcliffe. Her writing is sublime. My first read of 2025 was The Light at Tern Rock, on your recommendation. I thought it was a little Christmas diamond, so thank you so much!
I used to love to go to sleep at night playing the very beginning of the 1950s Douglas Sirk directed movie "All That Heaven Allows." It was comforting nostalgia for something I had never known: a small town Rockwellian simpler time ambiance of the mid-1950s, when the arrival of TV is the major social/entertainment interruption! LOL! Have you seen this? It's a romance where the woman is a young widow and she and the younger gardner (played by a young, strapping Rock Hudson, no less) fall in love. An unofficial 19th century British class system is well in play with the movie's 20th century all-American country club set, and the older heroine's desire to go on fully with life with a younger guy meets societal friction, from her adult friends and young adult children. It also has one of the most beautiful uses of technicolor I've seen in a movie. I think you might enjoy it.
Well, I have to say that I’m one of those people who did really love The Way We Live Now-but like you, I’m also having a really hard time getting into Orley Farm. I’m still determined to crack it wide open, but it’s work at this point!
I enjoyed "The Way We Live Now", but it's definitely not Trollope's best, in my opinion. I have read around 15 Trollope novels, the latest being "The Vicar of Bullhampton" which I thoroughly enjoyed. Have been planning to read "Orley Farm" for a while but keep putting it off. Perhaps no longer! 😄
Adding Rosemary Sutcliffe to my TBR right now! Do you have a title you recommend to start with or should I just dive in with whatever sounds good to me?
@@jensreadinglife Ahhh! This is so exciting! She has more meaty historical fiction involving battles like The Eagle of the Ninth that I haven't yet ventured into. I think you would really enjoy either The Armourers House or Brother Dusty Feet. I only recommend them over The Witch's Brat because they are lengthier.
Also wanted to add: I have a victober sweatshirt and a victober tshirt and I wear them a lot. I especially love the sweatshirt right now. It's funny to watch different people's reactions as they read it. One time a lady another patron at the library told me she searched #victober to find out what it meant ❤️📚🤩
Kate, how do you find the Charlotte M Yonge books? Are you buying them used or are there reprints available or are you listening to audiobooks. You make them sound like such great books and I'm trying to decide if I should hunt down some interlibrary loans or search ebay. Love your recommendations!!
I just love James Herriot. He is a childhood favorite. ❤😀

I read Eagle of the Ninth last year at the beginning and just loved it! As the life of a reader goes, I keep meaning to read to more by her 😅
I would love to check out some Charlotte Mary Young and more standalones from Trollop.
I'm not buying books in January and you are making it difficult. 😂😂❤
I was napping to White Christmas last week, and it was quite nice! 😂
@@BeDutch21 Right?! It's highly underrated 🤣
