    For me, the most ingenious design of the Protector is how the fore and aft engine sections (that glow blue) are in perfect alignment with each other. They're like the "flattened cigars" of TNG nacelles, but without the bulk of a middle portion. Watching the movie, I assumed the two blue-glowing pieces on each side would still form one side of a cohesive warp bubble, despite not being solid pieces. I guessed the main reactor's energies would invisibly stretch across the gaps on either side, the entire subspace pocket that allows for FTL travel would form around the ship, and BAM, off it would go.
    I'm very grateful to the designer for all his toil and sweat and dozens of rejected designs, until he hit upon just the right look, and it has become a classic starship design in its own right.

    The movie was a Star Trek parody! That's why so many Star Trek references are in the movie.
    Thank you Tim Allen.

    A tennis racket? I thought it was a backwards enterprise, the soccer section turned into the engine, and the engineering hull turned into the command section.

    • @DrFranklynAnderson
      @DrFranklynAnderson 4 роки тому

      Ibushi Pretty sure that’s the fictional origin of the design of the in-universe show. It’s on the Galaxy Quest wiki’s _Protector_ page, but neither Frank Rose nor Geoff Walters are listed on the movie’s IMDb page. Not sure where the wiki got if from, though…

    Didn't realize just how big UNSC ships are since a Charon class frigate is one of the smallest ships they have and it's bigger than an Excelsior class cruiser.

    Oh, i loved this episode :D I'm with everyone on the size being surprising; judging from the windows and the one giant crew quarters room (plus the HUGE engines, now that i think about it) i would have expected her to be at most Constitution-sized. There's an awful lot of room in that hull; you could probably dot the hull with Galaxy-style luxurious quarters for every crewman and still have enough room for everything else inside. Quite interesting; i supposed the original show only had enough budget for cardboard, mirrors and a matte painting :D

    I know this is really delayed, but I had kept forgetting to go back and watch this episode. Indeed, Galaxy Quest is one of my favorite all time movies. There were times I was the only one laughing in a pretty packed theater when I first saw it. If aliens came to earth to fin the crew of the Enterprise (Shatner and co.) then it would have probably happened almost exactly like this.
    One comment....do you think that the tennis racket story is a call back to the lore of how the Millennium Falcon was conceived? The story is that they were designing the Rebel Blockade Runner to be the Falcon only to have Lucas reject it for being too close to the Space 1999 ships. So, when brainstorming new ideas, supposedly Lucas took a bite out of his cheeseburger and flew it around saying something like, "what about this?"
    Great job, fellas!!

    Maybe you can help me out. Until today I try to understand how the scratching scene in Galaxy Class worked. I mean the front of the ship scratched along the shipyard wall. But at that angle, wouldn't they have ripped off the left-hand side engines?

    • @Jack_Stafford
      @Jack_Stafford 5 років тому +2

      Yes they did play with the perspective there, if they scratched the narrow front of ship, as you said, then the rear part of the ship would have slammed completely into and not just scratch the paint of the space dock.

  • @emu2020

    • @DogPatch1149
      @DogPatch1149 5 років тому

      I've always wondered that, too. My guess is that she rolled a bit to port and somehow the port engine slipped below the area where the Thermians were watching from the dock. Hard to say for sure, but that's the best I can visualize.

    quick question for the Capt. and Commander about the engines on the Protector.... the grills on the front of the ship remind me of Bussard collectors which stay solid on this ship if I'm correct and the rear ones pulsing which propelled the ship?..

  • @HoneyBadger1779

    'Armor' is actually a better term then 'shield'. In TOS the 'shields' were not 'shields' as we think of them, exotic energy or particle barriers of some sort, but were actually linked to the matter transport system. An armor coating of the strongest material that could be replicated was layered over the hull. If you have strong enough containment, you could make very dense plasma 'armor.' Because of neutron decay, i'm not sure how plausible neutron armor could be.

    I have to strongly disagree about the faster-than-light question. When they hit turbo you see stars start flying past it, and knowing the distance between Stars is so vast, to have them going by in a matter of seconds it's very clear they are going much faster than the speed of light.
    For instance the closest star to us is Alpha Centauri, and it's about 4 years away at going the speed of light. So to have a number of stars whipping by your in a matter of seconds you clearly are going many multiple times the speed of light just to have that many Star systems being passed at such a high rate of speed.

    You should see the bridges on real ships, even a freighter can have a bridge approaching that size and larger warships can have an air operations centre the same size again. Its Sci-Fi that has really small bridges usually due to the limitations of physical sets.

    Ok, there are a few things related to the movie that i wanted to point out. First off, this whole "Mak'Tar Massacre" thing isn't official/canon, ok? The only mention i found was in a earlier draft of the script that didn't make it to the final cut. Second, i have seen the movie and right at the beginning of the movie (after the Protector appears) Laredo/Tommy says that the ship left something called a "Time Knot", and then, a few seconds later, multiple enemy ships leave the "Time Knots" to attack the Protector. Could the ship have a FTL drive that created "Time Knots" to achieve superluminal speeds? Plus, these facts have been ignored/overlooked by you two at Trekyards!

    • @Fab0051
      @Fab0051 5 років тому

      P.S. I think that the Protector has 2 FTL drives, with the Primary Drive being the "Time Knot Drive" (mentioned in the comment above) and the Turbo Jump Drive being the Secondary/Backup Drive.

      P.P.S. I believe that Dr. Lazarus's species is in the same situation as Vulcans and Romulans. This is due to Dr. Lazarus being a counterpart to Spock (a Vulcan) The script i mentioned is here: sfy.ru/?script=galaxy_quest

      I'm pretty sure you're thinking of the Paris Class Frigate, not the Charon Class I'm not sure if the Charon Class is ever shown in Halo, Halo 2 or Halo 3. I'm pretty sure it's a Extra Canon/Fanon ship, but hey I could be wrong. There's another Halo Frigate class called the Stalwart but I don't know how big that one is. The UNSC has a lot of Frigate class ships.
