The circle on the back is where the double laser cannon ball turret is mounted.
Yeah. They've picked up quite a bad CGI model to be honest.
Also, they both didn't notice that the each of the two under wings have two single laser turrets. So in total the shuttle has 3x2 and 2x1 laser turrets.
I had a model of this growing up so I happen to know the back round part is a double gun torrent.
The wings house/ shield generator coils, stabilizers and cooling radiators for the compact hyper drive and engines. All the machinery is near the back. The interior cabin doesn't go all the way to the back to the ship...
the lower section of the main hull is more likely, similar to the way boats are most of the functioning areas are underneath and the passengers are above. we have already seen a similar starwars scenario with the millennium falcon where they were working on that ship and dropping down in to maintenance hatches.
/M0ther_bra1ned/ thank god for some sanity, these guys ramble on with no idea of how something could work!
well techniquely... you could create a very small hyper drive potentially, its all about the parts and the complexity of the rules of the universe, sometimes you might be able to have something the size of a clothes chest that can caus a fairly large shuttle to fly backwards and forwards through time, or to even move through space....
Shuttle Tydirium state your cargo and destination.
Parts and technical crew for the forest moon.
SJ NM I don't know, fly causal!
"Permission to land like a dainty butterfly?" It's a good design, and now that the Commander scaled it against some Treknology it makes more sense to me. Nice job gentlemen!
Love what you guys do. I understand you are trek experts and have spent a lot of time looking at technical specs for those ships. In the future, the Complete Cross-sections of Star Wars Vessels books is required reading (if you're actually trying to provide a technical review of these ships.) The information is there for you, if you'd care to do a little homework before your next Star Wars universe video. I think that would provide a much more informative viewing experience for your fans. It's a little hard to watch you guys just guessing at what things are on this ship. The information is out there in a highly detailed, easy to absorb format. I'd love to see more from you guys on Star Wars universe ships, but only if you'd show the fandom some respect by taking 10 minutes to look over the cross section plans for the ship just like I'm sure you've done for some of the Star Trek ships they're available for.
William Stenz yeah I'm kinda getting tired of them basically insulting all others except Star Trek
One of my favorite Star Wars vessels. I doubt the Empire cares about stormtroopers comfort. they fly coach. ;-)
I've always loved the Lambda Class Shuttle!
Looking at the models I have from Star Wars Battlefront III and The Force Unleashed, that circle on the back is supposed to be a rear-facing turret cannon.
This is my favourite Star Wars ship design. It easily feels like the most advanced ship I have seen on-screen.
9:30 The shuttle in Star Trek V had room for 10 people plus 2 pilots. The Captain’s yacht, Calypso, was stated to be a 30-person shuttle on the NCC-1701-D's Blueprints by Ed Whitefire.
That is honestly the feeling I get from the Lambda -class shuttle, a captain’s yacht.
18:10 Try landing that in a Galaxy-class.
The circle on the back is the rear facing cannons folded into the ship
@4:25 - There are six seats in the front cockpit.
@5:35 - The wings (s-foils) are for maneuvering jets, same reason the x-wing wings (s-foils) move.
@9:15 - Star Wars ships are far more compact than star trek ships, when thinking about this ship's scaling think along the lines of the delta flyer.
@13:00 - The weapons are for more stationary targets, think ground attack runs, i.e. both forward facing cannon types can rotate down.
@15:00 - The circle on the back is the retracted rear facing cannon turret.
Reminds me of a yacht, but with half an 80s sports car stuck on the front.
Easily one of the sexiest ships in the galaxy.
In the canon game "X-Wing" the Shuttle's cannons are quite powerful and can easily mow down a starfighter.
Ted Schoenling they had too. This was the model of shuttle used to joke Vader and the emporer. And I didn't see the imperial guards tie interceptors there
Can I just say - loving Fleet yards!
Hyperspace is an alternate dimension that shortens the distance between locations. Some objects, if large enough, can pull a vessel out using gravity that effects the dimension
I modelled this YEARS ago - one of my first 3D projects. Perhaps it uses the same tech as the TIE fighter, which I always thought had some sort of EM system built into the wings. As for the guns, the upper guns look something akin to canon, whereas the lower guns are machine gun-like (and appear to be designed for strafing). The sense of scale might be thrown off because the cockpit module is so large, much like a Space 1999 Eagle.
is this the 3D model you made specifically?
No, no. This looks like it's from a game or something - very low poly count. I created mine in Quicksilver on an Amiga, which was a predecessor to Lightwave I think. THAT long ago.
The rear hatch between the engines reminds me of Discovery's shuttle bay door between the impulse exhausts. Someone is not considering engine wash.
From what i remember the wings are soloar powered so thats why they extend out. The shuttle can go to hyperspace.
If i have one of these, i'll personally make an internal AC that consumable for 4 months, a personal bedroom, additional cannons, additional hyperdrive, additional length, repainted it with dark blue, basically a space RV
Star Wars designs often follow the Tarkin Doctrine, which means they are to intimidate and generate terror in appearance and function. To generate a presence of terror for the Empire. The wings are about looks.
Great episode. TARDIS NEXT PLS!!!
I always imagined all the tech in star wars operated of some sort of anti gravity (all the floating droids, speeders that float, there is gravity inside ships, etc.) So on Starfighters/shuttles, the wing like elements are negating gravity in atmosphere and also operating in relation with each other for maneuvering. I use that explanation to hand-wave why the fighters handle like atmospheric wwii fighter craft in space. So the big wings on this thing make for a comfortable stable ride in atmosphere and are used for maneuvering in space.
The hyper drives, life support, and shielding in SW also seems to be miniscule as they can fit the hyper drives on small single person fighters and even some droids had personal shields.
5:55 heat can’t be transferred in the vacuum of space except for IR radiation. This is a inefficient process compared to cooling methods like our CPU coolers for example. To loose heat in space you need large radiation surfaces. (Example ISS has many large panels but only 2/3rd of them are solar panels. The rest are heat radiators.) compared to many starwars ships this shuttle has very large wings. If these are radiators this could indicate that there’s a lot of high power tech on board that generates a lot of heat.
I think the larger wings are made for close air support while delivering some support troops the larger wings allowing it to stay up in the air at slower speed over the battle field in a support roll or a med extract vehicle
hey this is awesome I love when people get into the details of how these ship are made and who made them this ship being my favorite spacecraft of all time
I thought Lambda-class shuttles were manufactured by Cygnus Spaceworks, not Sienar Fleet Systems....
It was a joint project. Designed by sienar fleet systems and manufacturered by cygnus spaceworks. We can assume the electronics, radiators, power pack, hyperdrive, weapons, and sensors were sienar with the frame, engines, and shielding was primarily cygnus based on the company's past forte demonstrations. I am sure there was collaboration between the two on many systems such as the engines though.
So cool.
Simon Pegg who play "Scott" called ISS Astronaut Kate Rubins and talk about real life in outer space.
devide the main part of the vessel in to 3 sections and the cockpit into 2. for the main part of the vessel you have the lower section which are in the line of the wings, this is the main area where tech can be. the middle section can be the cabin and the upper box ontop can be more tech. for the cockpit, you have the pilot area and you can have a sensor set and computers in the nose.
Hello Captain Folley and Admiral Hawkings. I think both of you are missing a couple of things which seem fairly obvious to me. The engineering bay is slung below and behind the passenger/cargo area. In addition, military transports can pack a large number of troops in a relatively small area as well as be used for cargo transport. Troop transports would likely be standing room only or have seats along the sides facing inwards, like the shuttle shown in the opening scenes of "the Force Awakings". The hatch on the rear of the shuttle is likely for maintenance access. As for the size of the tech and the amount of equipment needed, keep in mind the X-wing is capable of hyperspace jumps and you can make a fully programmed semi-sentient 'droid out of scrap parts found in a junk yard, not to mention a fully functional afterburning turbofan engine with no apparent fuel source. Now, since the ramp is stored below the cockpit area, I can't figure out how the pilots have access unless they board first, raise the ramp, enter the cockpit to prep for flight, then lower the ramp to accept cargo/passengers. Thank you both for the great work you do in keeping Star Trek alive and sensible.
9:34 the duration of space travel is sometimes pretty long (even in hyperspace) it’s funny that many StarWars shuttle(ish) ships have room for many people but there’s no place to sleep, shower or sh*t. (Strange cause these shuttles are for transporting high ranking officials) I really agree that the main body should be much larger in comparison to the three crew cockpit.
Nice haircut Commander.
Always stuck me as a kind of space lear jet, like a kind of VIP transport.
Lambda's sloping nose is reminiscent of a Concord.
There were rear laser cannons for anyone sneaking up behind them.
That's rather common. I was hoping you were going to keep them more obscure.
The TARDIS!!! Do that!
The fins help in atmospheric maneuvering
I think the Shuttle uses similar tech to the Tie Fighters. the Wings and Sail have Tech in them and are part of the drive system. also of note, in the Star Wars Universe their FTL Drive AKA Hyperdrive doesn't need anything external in order to work. Unlike Star Trek that need nacelles. You can compare the Shuttle to the Klingon Bird of Prey, it was warp wings.
Including what others said i do think the wings also hold repulser lifts.
great video!
I'm working on a video where one of these ships is destroyed by a bazooka .. any advice?
You should take some shots of inside from star wars rebels.
for the full episode we will!
Careful its owned by Disney...
There was a variation of this shuttle in The season opener of season 2 of star wars rebels
Y'all think the bulbus parts on the side are torpedo launchers?
It can atmosphere fly. It was shown Return of Jedi landing on Ewock planet.
The wings are for stabilization.
I always thought the wings on ships like these dictated shield placement or stabilization.
Could you do some of the Babylon 5 ships? I'd love to see more detail on the Hyperion heavy cruiser or the Omega destroyers.
Of course, It needs a deflector to go to warp.
Now Star Wars too can you make one on the providence and or lucrehulk class pls
Doesn't the cockpit eject as a lifebod
military version of concorde did, nice idea! :D
That was the Imperial landing Craft
Wings… let it go Commander. Let it go.
the round part above the engines is the hyper drive, I read some where, where it was 60 to 65 meters, not 20 meters
Adam Wofford I've seen other cgi models that have made this as an aft turret.
Jake Werkmeister really? I guess there are different takes on this ship, wish there was a standard for these, but thanks for telling me
The models with the rear turret were in the Gamecube Rogue Squadron games. The shuttle was actually playable in certain missions, and that rear gun came in handy.
I believe that the same occurred in the X-Wing Alliance PC game. The shuttle required a code to make it playable, but I believe that the programmers also made that little bubble an aft turret. It's been years since I've played the game though, so don't quote me on that.
Jake Werkmeister yeah, I played it back in day, wish they make other x-wing game or tie fighter game
In the toy, that round thing at the back was a twin cannon.
isfj1009 which is blue print wise, corrwct. it is suppose to have one twin cannon aft. nice toy.
isfj1009 and my reference is the essential guide to ships and vehicles. ;)
It could be a mounting point so could hold a cannon turret or an escape pod or simply a access door.
My first glance thought was that it was he Hyperdrive Motivator - as the X-Wing's looks a little like that.
But Stewart was right to point out that it looks very much like a hatch door.
The Troop carrying equivalent of this would be the Sentinel Class Landing Craft seen in the Star Wars Special Edition & Shadows of the Empire.
I don't think they really thought tech when designing Star Wars. When you have X-wings and TIE fighters flying around in space like there's an atmosphere - science takes a back seat. But since you are talking tech - who knows how big the hyperspace generators are? X-Wings and Y- Wings have them as well and they are pretty small ships. If the hyperspace generator is the size of a shoe box, you can find room.
Have you ever traveled in a military transport? You could definitely put 20 people in this, nuts to buts. And it’s probably four rows of five not two rows of ten.
can yall do a mission breifing on the Andromeda Ascendent
hi captain /commander = and yet another highly entertaining show ? but I can't wait until you do one with a little more meat on the bone ? for example / the sulaco(ALIENS) and the drop ship / and maybe the stealth ship from the first alien (v) preditor film ? so stop your grinning and drop you lining / punch it bishop ??? see you soon lads ( LT ) Paul Coffey sign ing off. !!! .
the first one we can do..the Predator ship i dont have in 3D..if you know a model of her we can use then we would love to look at her! Glad you enjoy it!
Sooo much time focused on the back round thingy
how to fit 20 people in that thing? you haven't been on a bus in Los Angeles. :P
Or a train in Tokyo.
the wings are for if you mite have to fly in higher gravity planet it. or just a thin atmosphere.
all so parts like cabon nano tube solar on the wings, do to a light hall and not a lot of power.
and maybe some heat radiator in the wings as will.
will thats all i can think of for now and thanks for yours times. :D
Why is the Commanders shot in his window always Mirrored?
is that from your web cam? come on Samuel, let us know why
What happened to BSG Pegasus?
That was out 4th to be made full Fleetyards episode (not mission briefing) but we did not hit our Patreon goals so we could not move ahead on the episode, but with certain events happening we still wanted to produce some fleetyads content..and content that would hopefully encourage fans to help get us to out Patreon goals and be able to do these full episodes!
The original design was to have a bubble canopy.
Star wars incredible cross sections very clearly describes all functions of the shuttles machinery. The wings are primarily shield generators and radiators though they have a secondary functions for communications and sensor equipment as well as control repulsors. Those massive shield radiators and heat sinks give the shuttle its extremely robust shields.
That sphere on the back is the ships rear turret, not a hatch. Also star wars was also very cheaply done, it was simply an art design choice to make things not like Star trek and to make things look worn and mechanical in direct contrast to the clean and new look of star trek.
I quite enjoyed listening to you two talk and share your passion for starships I just wish you would have done some research beforehand. You honestly could've really benefited from doing it because most of what you talked about was utterly wrong and a waste of time speculating when the information exists.
Because this shuttle is extremely well grounded and unified. In fact I would always disagree when it comes to the machinery of Star trek being more grounded. You can get the cutaway book and clearly see how hyperdrives have shrunk over decades and see they are almost always consistent in size and shape even across different species. Star trek is far more fantastical and undefined in it's technology. Far more handwaving.
Maybe the tech is inside the nose of the ship.
Ion cannon disables electronics.
Here's how they board the shuttle: vignette1.wikia.nocookie.net/starwars/images/b/b9/Arrival-ROTJHD.png/revision/latest?cb=20131005033500 The "20 passengers" figure is basically stormtroopers sitting on benches, with no luxuries in the interior. There is reference to luxury versions, which sacrifice internal space for better accommodations.
Using that image for scale I'd say that a Lambda could easily handle 20 people inside, there's enough people close enough to the shuttle to use as scale.
WIN
so, when you go into hyperspace you don't "warp" space around you-like in star trek-you instead create a sort of wormhole to travel through. I think the wings are on this one to hold open the wormhole thing
20 people standing
ion cannons
Sie-Nar - not Sienna ;-)
The circle in the back is an aft gun
Sienar pronounced sigh nar
You guys have been doing too much Star Trek Hyperspace and Warp are totally different. Also, did he refer to Seinar as Sienna?
I know where the hyperdrive is.
colonial 1! or whatever
