@@PoutingScout Exactly! I don't get the 'aaaah ain't that sweet' vibe some on here are feeling. It's the very least any human being should expect. Knowing they'd be lynched by the k k lan if ANY of the three of them were caught in such an illegal practice, somehow doesn't make everyone feel all warm and fuzzy knowing the nefarious nature of slavery and racism roots. It's perverse.

Celia isn't racist like the rest of the town.
She's her employer, but she wanted to be friends with Minnie... Despite Minnie protesting, she'd always come find her and eat lunch with her at the little table in the kitchen designated for the help ...
This scene where Celia cooked a HUGE meal and served it to her at the big table, is a big deal, she wanted Minnie to know how much she means to her!

@@MoniVeeThe whole movie was centered around the book Skeeter wrote telling the stories of all the maids and care givers. They were the stories of live and struggle of these often over looked women who were taken for granted. The good the bad and the ugly side of their lives and work. Ghost written and published anonymously by Skeeter which won her the job at the New York Publishing company. They called it the help. It is also why Hilly lost her ever loving mind because the story about her, her mother and Minnies pie with the surprise ingredent.

The reason he said "if you want it" the way he did is because in an earlier scene in the movie when Skeeter (Emma Stone) was first "secretly" interviewing the group of maids for her book, several of them mentioned how their maid services were passed down in wills to the next of kin as though they were property and not hired help and had no say in the matter.
Viola Davis won Best Actress Academy and Octavia Spencer won Best Supporting Actress Academy Award and the movie won Best Picture Academy. Jessica Chastain was also a nominee for Best Supporting Actress. It was a fabulous ensemble cast. The woman who played Hilly is the daughter of Ron Howard.

Minny was still her employee. She was a nice and friendly boss. But they were paying her.
That’s the part i never liked about this movie. As nice and touching the relationship between Minny and Celia was, it was never a relationship between equals. One was wealthy and employed the second one, who was poor and needed desperately a job.
Which means that even though for now this relationship seemed going well, no one can tell if 20 years later, Celia wouldn’t fire Minny on a whim, like the mother of Skeetle did with Constantine.

What I find funny, to me, is how Hilly is so self-absorbed that she couldn't see or understand that man would've dumped her regardless of if Celia had been in the picture or not.
And no amount of attempt to keep an "image" or societal pressure would've made him stay, let alone MARRY her as she hoped given he clearly didn't care about any of it in regards to Marrying Celia (Pregnant or not) or the scene she unintentionally made at that auction.
He actually cares about PEOPLE, and she barely cares about anyone outside herself and her neck. They never would've made it.

@@charlotteroblin5374 You may believe that but other people don't want to pray to a human man. People, can not pay for your sins. You alone have to do that. All this belief does is give people a way to excuse their bad behavior, because they think their sins are forgiven, poof, just like that. This is unrealistic and not true. It's a very old pagan belief. The Pagans believed that their god had a son, they called him "the lamb" and "the light" and said that simply believing in him would absolve you of all your sins. This false belief predates Christianity. And early Christians fought against this blasphemous notion. Imagine being God, and your creation (humans) rewrite your word and choose to worship a man instead of Him. How disrespectful.

My father was raised in Birmingham, Alabama. His parents both worked full time and the children had a nanny who was absolutely part of their family. He said that Emma filled the role of a parent for many years of his life. She played such an important role in their home that when summer came, someone was sick, or needed a day off, her children came to work with her no questions asked. My grandmother was a big believer in women working, and she swears that having Emma was what kept her from slowly loosing her mind at home. My grandfather worked in insurance and made sure that Emma was covered for everything that she ever needed as a benefit package along with her weekly pay. My great grandmother was an immigrant and she simply did not teach that kind of hate to her children and grandchildren. It makes me feel so proud to come from a family in the South that not only refused to participate in the racism and mistreatment that often occurred to Black women working in white homes, but more so even that Emma was then and is still recognized as an integral part of our families success.

@tracyross676 do you realize the level of love and intimacy these two women shared? The amount of humanity that she gave her with that one sentence acknowledging that Minny was the superior one in something enough to educate her? In a time and place where black people were considered less than human so much so they were forced to use separate bathrooms to not "contaminate" white bathrooms. Here we have a rich, privileged, white housewife SERVING her black maid and acknowledging that she was a STUDENT to her and needed to learn from her about something.
It doesn't seem a huge thing to modern viewers and it shouldn't if we are marching the right way in history. However if you take the scene in the context of the movie and history around it? This is huge.
