Bro, I'm living in Northern Virginia now, but I'm natively from Oahu and left the island right before Covid hit the public! I haven't been back since...lol....But, yeah, I grew up there, went to Punahou school, worked at places like Louis Vuitton and Gucci at both Ala Moana Shopping Center and Waikiki, etc..etc...But, ever since moving here to Virginia I have been loving it to death. Matter of fact, me and my wife went to Tyson's Corner 2(to the mall) and did some shopping there just yesterday...Virginia is even more diverse, in everything, than hawaii. Matter of fact, I've met so many hawaiian people, some polynesians, micronesians, Tungans, Somoans and Filippino's and everything in between, that this is basically a "monster sized" hawaii. I love it here in Virginia man and will probably never go back to hawaii to live. Put in the fact that everything is getting much more costlier, especially now that there's an elevated rail going from Ewa Beach towards Ala Moana Shopping Center, and the taxes are getting even higher, as a result because let's face it, somebody has to pay for that elevated rail; not to mention all the rampant homelessness and petty crime. Virginia was ranked as one of the safest states to live in the United States and is indeed ranked, for a very good reason, the 2nd best state, to retire in(Florida ranked #1).
I moved from hawaii to vegas And the weather during the summer is terrible its so hot and it hardly rain theres no beach here in vegas too and i love camping out but not here i'm planning to move back home
Yep, it gets old after a while. Hawaii ain't all it cracked up to be. Once you've lived there you learned that the hype isn't real. Its just a beautiful small touristy place that has nothing to offer.
But the thing is that the story is the same. Sooner or later, you'll be done with everything and Island Fever will just catch up and you'll feel stuck and bored again.
Good video, Santiago! We've lived on Hawaii Island 17 years, from California & originally Atlanta, also. No island fever on this Big Island, lol - all your other points are spot on. It helps to grow some of your food & trade with neighbors. It's a good, slow life. Mahalo nui loa ;)
Islands are not exactly long term homes to those accustomed to the kind of infrastructure and development seen in westernized civilizations. Besides isolation they’re also extremely limited in their resources. Not to mention the historical fact that the European nations who colonized these so called “paradises” only viewed that as military outposts as well as first line of defense positions to protect their mainlands. Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, The Dominican Republic, Guam, Samoa and the Virgin Island don’t exactly have the landmass for modern development and infrastructure. Plus they all suffer graphically when you take Mother Nature into account.
@@JDMcNeil Jason, I think Big Island would be good for you. I am thinking Hilo. There is a lot of people from the mainland who buys houses there or Kailua. It will sort of similar to Detroit or MI. I am not sure if you are ready for the diversity and some locals won't like you.
People underestimate the cost of living. That’s the number one reason why people leave. If you have money, you’re good. If you have the money, you can live comfortably, afford to fly home to visit, and afford to go on vacation if you get bored. I love Hawaii and I am not struggling to stay, but a lot of people are. Homeless encampments are growing.
Hi hi! Just wanted to peep in to spread love to fellow Hawaii based UA-cam creators. 🙃🌈Although you moved away you were here at one point! I watched a few of your videos and I’m humbled to hear your positive experience in Hawaii. Good luck on your newest journey.
As someone who lived there for five years and who appreciates all kinds of culture and have friends of all nationalities, I was disappointed in the rampant racism throughout Hawaii. It’s just as bad as living in some backwoods area of Alabama - just a different flavor of racism - that’s all. And for that reason… It’s a DULL place. If you’re going to live anywhere else on the planet, go to the Mediterranean. You’ll find the same exact weather but much nicer culture and way better food.
@@HM-yr1vr We're not responsible for what our ancestors did. I understand acting coldly towards those who come to the islands & act in a disrespectful manner, but treating everybody not from Hawaii that way only makes you a bigot, yourself.
As someone born and raised here on Oahu, I totally agree with you. The stereotyping is getting out of control and add in racism this place sucks big time. The food here is crappy. Everything Asian, all taste the same like sodium. You want good local food gotta make it yourself. I am done with this place, cannot wait to get out of here. Lots of drugs on the streets. Honolulu is the worse. My parents are from Hilo, which has a much nicer vibe, but no jobs. Soon these people will learn when they have very little tourist visiting and the locals keep moving because the way we’re treated by others. The Asian population here has very bad attitudes. I feel like I live in some kind of communist Asian country. Big difference from the old Hawaii I grew up in compared to now.
I live both DMV and Honolulu. Both are expensive for housing. You get a better deal and job market in the DMV. Traffic sucks on the Beltway as well as H1. People in Hawaii are friendlier than here, especially in certain areas.
Yeah, i grew up here and live on Oahu but i also love to travel. I really want to visit the east coast something i haven't done yet but it's so FAR! I think everyone got to have a home base.
I agree with the Island fever.. I’ve been here about 4 months now and I’m growing bored. I’m from NYC and have lived in Tokyo for 5 yrs so I am used to being in a big city. Oahu is beautiful but I’ve been bumping into the same people at the super market, shops, bars or just walking around and quiet honestly it makes me uncomfortable to know how small the neighborhood is. Waikiki is the main place to hang out but I’ve been up and down the strip just one too many times lol. I’m thinking about moving to Texas.
Good vid Santiago! I got kicked out by the volcano from the Big Island. Spent 2 precious years there, but ditto...was getting island fever before Kilauea blew.....Many Mahalos & shaka.
Ya know I've seen stupid stuff on both ends. But I've seen black folks come here and stereotype locals. Uh damn this their 8 islands and they have every reason to not trust any of us from the mainland. I think some of us are all equally full of crap. Locals, blacks and whites. Everybody tryin to run a damn hustle. Yes I've seen it
That’s why I visit every 2 years with my family. We have family who live in Oahu. They own restaurants and the work at the resorts. I love to visit but you could not pay me to live there. The last 6 years the local hate towards us mainland people has increased quite a bit. I am pretty much shielded since my wife is Asian. Most people think I live on the island with wife. I always get local discounts on my bills.
You have to have a boat! Without a boat, I can’t imagine what you would do? I surfed and collected tropical fish for 20 years on the Big Island, wonderful days. I ate local, rice and fish. If you can catch it yourself, it’s just a benefit of having your own boat, plus Iki Shiba, fishing at night, so much fun! And sometimes you can big money.
