I’m Native American and I grew on the reservation created by the federal government hundreds of years ago. I left after university and didn’t return home due to lack of work, poverty and the rampant addiction. I recently visited the big island and it felt a lot like home (aside from the beautiful beaches). I never realized how much Native Americans and Hawaiians have in common. The people, the culture and the deep love and respect for the land. Much love and respect from my people to yours!
I was born at Tripler Army Hospital and left after only a month. We spent 18 days on the big island for Christmas and I felt like I was home. We are Looking forward to retiring in Hawaii someday.
I lived on Oahu for 8 years and loved it. I always respected the locals and never had any problems with locals. I was fortunate to be able to survive on minimum wage and with making money on the side by playing music. It's a dream for many people to live there. But sometimes it's not for everybody and won't be able to stay. It comes down to where you actually belong. If you think you believe you belong somewhere, like Hawaii, won't really be where you belong and it will be hard to realize it. Peace and love.
The "respect" thing is a joke. I live on Kauai for the same amount of time. I've lived in 3 foreign countries, visited over 30 foreign countries, and lived up and down the East Coast. I find the "locals" (however you want to define them, mostly Asian Mix, with maybe .000001 Hawaiian blood quantum) to be socially retarded and outright racists. I moved in to a "local" neighborhood. No one knocked on my door to welcome me to the neighborhood, no one stopped by to say hello, I would wave while walking my dogs only to have people ignore me, and when I passed someone on the street they would put their head down and try to ignore me. "Disrespect"????? Respect is everywhere. The way locals use respect, is like I must bow whenever I am in their presence, and thank the good Lord they allowed me to walk on the street in front of their house. SMH
you have to realize that not everyone has that mindset. at all. It's take take take for most people. and native Hawaiians always DID have that mindset. until people started stealing their land and not respecting it. you have to understand that it's not about the people who come because they see the earth's continents as one, it's about those who come to pollute their land, steal from them, and go on obliviously.
I was stationed in Hawaii. My tips to being successful in Hawaii. 1) If you on Oahu, don’t be glued to Honolulu area. It’s cheaper and betta living out on the island. 2) Recognize that you’re a Haole. I didn’t get butthurt being called Haole. It’s basically just “visitor” or “outsider” which isn’t an insult. I’m not Hawaiian, so I called myself Haole boy. 3) F**king respect the locals. Learn some damned history, and bother engaging in the culture. Make some local friends, they’ll show you places you wouldn’t have found otherwise. Also, for the few bitter locals that exist, they won’t mess with you if you’re with locals. It’s like an unwritten code. 4) Don’t gripe about how expensive it is. It’s insulting to actual Hawaiians who can barely afford to survive in their native home. Don’t like the prices? Keep it to yourself, or leave. You have no right to complain. 5) Learn to surf. The best things in Hawaii are free. You can get wasted at a bar anywhere. Only in Hawaii can you surf the famous North Shore or Makaha!!

Dude you forgot how much it costs to live there! I am a nurse but even though they need nurses I would have to be living there before I can apply to any of the healthcare jobs. Makes it hard for Hawaiians and houli s alike. Food costs astronomical so one must find place and make a garden if possible to grow as many foods as possible. It is unique with its unique cultural inheritance. I feel passionate about how I could help with health education for people who are facing risks. Lots of diabetes, high blood pressure and heart/ vascular diseases that could potentially be prevented. Even my brother lives there and has been there more than 30 years. His 2 kids and his ex wife there in a different island and it’s even hard for him to get over there and back has to fly inter island or a few times sailed his boat. Had rough weather and made it but close call! The island should promote recruiting people that have skills to help the island people too!
Been there years ago. It was fun, interesting and a cultural experience I'll never forget. Will I ever go back? Probably not. Too many homeless, too costly, over crowded.

Hawaii called me after my divorce and I lived there 12 years. I loved every minute of it, met some great people, embraced all the cultures, was never sick a day, and want to cry when I see these videos with all that beauty that I miss so much. I only left because I knew I could never retire there and live very well, so when I reached retirement age I left. I still think it is the most beautiful place on this earth and life there is a little softer, a little sweeter than anywhere else I've ever lived.
I understand where you're coming from . However everything happens for a reason. And if someone ends up moving to Hawaii and it works out for them, it was meant to be. Why can't we all be at peace with each other. At the end of the day we are all brothers and sisters coming from a supreme creator of all that exists.

Theres some truth for you. I was in the Marines Medically retired after my last tour in Iraq. Moved to Maui to clear my head worst move I've ever made. Should have just gone back to Japan. The Japanese are friendly awesome people with a true kick ass culture. Theres barely any crime there. I was stationed there for 2 years loved every second of it. Hiroshima, Osaka, and Tokyo were the best days of my life would love to go back.

I recently visited Maui and my fiancé and I just fell so madly in love with it. Beyond the amazing beauty and fresh food which is enough in itself, we felt such a sense of community and love. Both of us were heartbroken to have to leave. Now we are exploring visiting the big island as it’s more feasible to live there. When we were flying out we ran into a couple who had lived in Maui for a decade plus who said the island either pulls you in and accepts you as part of it or it will spit you back out to tell you it’s not for you. I can’t speak from experience to agree with that but it seems to be the case. I don’t know for sure that it will be for us but I do know the changes I felt inside when I visited and how my heart broke when I had to leave. As far as the locals go, once again I can’t speak for anywhere aside from Maui, but I feel they are similar to the island in that they feel your energy and will either take you in or reject you. Also respect and kindness go a long way….but that should also be the standard for how you everyone which doesn’t seem to be the case for a lot of people.
I live on the Big Island and own a lovely home near the cliff. I do not take jobs away from anyone, as I do not need to work. I give to the community and have painted lovely murals on the Big Island for FREE. I am one of those whites who come here and actually GIVES to the community. I have also served as volunteer firefighter and red cross volunteer. I WONDER if the guy who posted this video has done half the shit I have done here...... Most-likely not. I have lived here long enough to know that JUST BECAUSE YOU WERE BORN AND RAISED HERE DOES NOT MEAN YOU ARE FIT FOR THE ISLANDS, EITHER! Just speaking from what I have seen.
He is 100% right! You have to adapt to Island life, weather, expenses, & Hawaian culture! You also have to be respectful to the locals! This is where you will be living now and not just on a vacation! Having plenty of money, will definitely make your transition a lot easier, to say the least! I am a 64 year old with a cat named Shiro. I am praying about moving to Hawaii. I live poor in Hershey, PA and I have a section 8 voucher and can live in Hawaii. I have watched films about the Kingdom and I have much respect and compassion about what I watched. I love the outdoors and would enjoy the land. I would definitely respect the locals. I am no threat to anyone or their land. I have a beautiful soul and live in peace. I can go barefoot and wear shoes inside too. My niece was married there, my family would visit me. I have a handicap and would be close to home most of the time. I would need the bus to get around. Just realize I never had anything to do with negative actions of the people of the Kingdom. I would just like to embrace and enjoy paradise. God BLess and maybe one day I will be there.

She is from Brazil and we are about to go our separate ways. When we left she said she would never move there because it’s too far from her home and everything else. Too bad for her... I love long board surfing Waikiki and the chilled locals with their island style and smiles. That’s why I love the place. I miss the old international market in Waikiki that was a special/magical place. I understand it’s now been replaced by high end stores, boo. I recently went to Costa Rica, and that is a cool place for chilled people. Just be ready to eat rice, beans and chicken every day which is fine with me. I love Kona coffee, the Costa Rica coffee is also primo!

As a Haole born and raised in Hawai'i I'm happy to see this video. One of the many reasons most people should not move here is the size of Hawai'i and the amount of visitors and the impact it has. To have so much wear and tear on the land by so many people, the development that follows and the resources required to support large communities is horrible for the preservation of this land. The population issue or "argument" to not live here is one based on ecological and environmental effects not social or cultural. Also the magic my brother here speaks of is unimaginable and incomprehensible without first hand experience. Like trying to describe making love to a virgin, they get it but not at all. This is also not a state, nor a territory it is an illegal militarized occupation of a Sovereign Nation. So if you feel a little 'racism' towards Haoles it not only warranted but not racism in my opinion. At this point it's just being angry at insurgents. I support a Sovereign Hawaii and hope to see it in my life. Yes I'm a United States citizen, Iraq and Afghanistan Airforce veteran and would willingly help a legitimate Sovereign Hawaiian Nation succeed from the U.S.
Hawaii could do sovereignity pretty well. Stay a part of the US Postal System as a few other island nations are, keep on friendly terms with the US, but have the US pay rent for the military installations if any are kept (and they'll have to be) and make a much more Socialist and caring society. National health care, free college, etc. You know, like actual first-world nations do. Also nationalize all foreign-owned properties, no foreign-owned hotels, resorts, ranches etc.

the big island is where I live and if you want to move to Hawaii those your choices you shouldn't have anyone telling you what you can and can't do if you come to the land respected respecting people who are here it's not a tourist attraction and maybe your vacation but this is our home so if you come here just respect it you'll be okay
That's an issue that you face everywhere. All land is stolen. At this point in time so many people are migrating for different reasons. Tons of people are moving to where I live (SLC, UT) bc of the low cost of living compared to everywhere else especially Cali. we have awesome mountains and outdoor activities and an "abundance" of well paying jobs. Outsiders are definitely driving up the cost of living here and sure I'm mad about it (I can't buy a house now for a while bc outsiders are paying over asking price in cash...) but there's literally nothing you can do. So oh well. Hawaiian ppl don't get to treat ppl poorly or complain when its happening everywhere and has happened already.
It's hard to make it in Philadelphia, PA. I've found cheaper homes in Hawaii than I found in Philly. People move from all over, from one place to another. Hawaii is no different. You have to respect people wherever you go. Philly isn't for some, Brooklyn isn't for some, the U.S. Virgin Islands isn't for some...and at the same time many places ARE for many people. At the end of the day, the whole world is surrounded by an ocean. You have to force yourself to make it in Hawaii, if that's what you want to do.

I was born at Tripler Army Hospital and left after only a month. We spent 18 days on the big island for Christmas and I felt like I was home. We are Looking forward to retiring in Hawaii someday.

I lived on Oahu for 8 years and loved it. I always respected the locals and never had any problems with locals. I was fortunate to be able to survive on minimum wage and with making money on the side by playing music. It's a dream for many people to live there. But sometimes it's not for everybody and won't be able to stay. It comes down to where you actually belong. If you think you believe you belong somewhere, like Hawaii, won't really be where you belong and it will be hard to realize it. Peace and love.
The "respect" thing is a joke. I live on Kauai for the same amount of time. I've lived in 3 foreign countries, visited over 30 foreign countries, and lived up and down the East Coast. I find the "locals" (however you want to define them, mostly Asian Mix, with maybe .000001 Hawaiian blood quantum) to be socially retarded and outright racists. I moved in to a "local" neighborhood. No one knocked on my door to welcome me to the neighborhood, no one stopped by to say hello, I would wave while walking my dogs only to have people ignore me, and when I passed someone on the street they would put their head down and try to ignore me. "Disrespect"????? Respect is everywhere. The way locals use respect, is like I must bow whenever I am in their presence, and thank the good Lord they allowed me to walk on the street in front of their house. SMH

I was stationed in Hawaii. My tips to being successful in Hawaii. 1) If you on Oahu, don’t be glued to Honolulu area. It’s cheaper and betta living out on the island. 2) Recognize that you’re a Haole. I didn’t get butthurt being called Haole. It’s basically just “visitor” or “outsider” which isn’t an insult. I’m not Hawaiian, so I called myself Haole boy. 3) F**king respect the locals. Learn some damned history, and bother engaging in the culture. Make some local friends, they’ll show you places you wouldn’t have found otherwise. Also, for the few bitter locals that exist, they won’t mess with you if you’re with locals. It’s like an unwritten code. 4) Don’t gripe about how expensive it is. It’s insulting to actual Hawaiians who can barely afford to survive in their native home. Don’t like the prices? Keep it to yourself, or leave. You have no right to complain. 5) Learn to surf. The best things in Hawaii are free. You can get wasted at a bar anywhere. Only in Hawaii can you surf the famous North Shore or Makaha!!

It is unique with its unique cultural inheritance. I feel passionate about how I could help with health education for people who are facing risks. Lots of diabetes, high blood pressure and heart/ vascular diseases that could potentially be prevented. Even my brother lives there and has been there more than 30 years. His 2 kids and his ex wife there in a different island and it’s even hard for him to get over there and back has to fly inter island or a few times sailed his boat. Had rough weather and made it but close call!
The island should promote recruiting people that have skills to help the island people too!

Hawaii called me after my divorce and I lived there 12 years. I loved every minute of it, met some great people, embraced all the cultures, was never sick a day, and want to cry when I see these videos with all that beauty that I miss so much. I only left because I knew I could never retire there and live very well, so when I reached retirement age I left. I still think it is the most beautiful place on this earth and life there is a little softer, a little sweeter than anywhere else I've ever lived.

I recently visited Maui and my fiancé and I just fell so madly in love with it. Beyond the amazing beauty and fresh food which is enough in itself, we felt such a sense of community and love. Both of us were heartbroken to have to leave. Now we are exploring visiting the big island as it’s more feasible to live there. When we were flying out we ran into a couple who had lived in Maui for a decade plus who said the island either pulls you in and accepts you as part of it or it will spit you back out to tell you it’s not for you. I can’t speak from experience to agree with that but it seems to be the case. I don’t know for sure that it will be for us but I do know the changes I felt inside when I visited and how my heart broke when I had to leave. As far as the locals go, once again I can’t speak for anywhere aside from Maui, but I feel they are similar to the island in that they feel your energy and will either take you in or reject you. Also respect and kindness go a long way….but that should also be the standard for how you everyone which doesn’t seem to be the case for a lot of people.
I live on the Big Island and own a lovely home near the cliff. I do not take jobs away from anyone, as I do not need to work. I give to the community and have painted lovely murals on the Big Island for FREE. I am one of those whites who come here and actually GIVES to the community. I have also served as volunteer firefighter and red cross volunteer. I WONDER if the guy who posted this video has done half the shit I have done here...... Most-likely not. I am a 64 year old with a cat named Shiro. I am praying about moving to Hawaii. I live poor in Hershey, PA and I have a section 8 voucher and can live in Hawaii. I have watched films about the Kingdom and I have much respect and compassion about what I watched. I love the outdoors and would enjoy the land. I would definitely respect the locals. I am no threat to anyone or their land. I have a beautiful soul and live in peace. I can go barefoot and wear shoes inside too. My niece was married there, my family would visit me. I love long board surfing Waikiki and the chilled locals with their island style and smiles. That’s why I love the place. I miss the old international market in Waikiki that was a special/magical place. I understand it’s now been replaced by high end stores, boo. I recently went to Costa Rica, and that is a cool place for chilled people. Just be ready to eat rice, beans and chicken every day which is fine with me. I love Kona coffee, the Costa Rica coffee is also primo!

I can respect this mans opinion! Although I don’t hate people because of their race I can understand why some people feel this way.. in my case, my people inhabited the land people now call California(it was beautiful and green) fast forward a couple of centuries and my people got pushed back into what is now Baja California after u.s rule. As a Haole born and raised in Hawai'i I'm happy to see this video. One of the many reasons most people should not move here is the size of Hawai'i and the amount of visitors and the impact it has. To have so much wear and tear on the land by so many people, the development that follows and the resources required to support large communities is horrible for the preservation of this land. The population issue or "argument" to not live here is one based on ecological and environmental effects not social or cultural. Also the magic my brother here speaks of is unimaginable and incomprehensible without first hand experience. Like trying to describe making love to a virgin, they get it but not at all. This is also not a state, nor a territory it is an illegal militarized occupation of a Sovereign Nation. So if you feel a little 'racism' towards Haoles it not only warranted but not racism in my opinion. At this point it's just being angry at insurgents. I support a Sovereign Hawaii and hope to see it in my life. Yes I'm a United States citizen, Iraq and Afghanistan Airforce veteran and would willingly help a legitimate Sovereign Hawaiian Nation succeed from the U.S.
Hawaii could do sovereignity pretty well. Stay a part of the US Postal System as a few other island nations are, keep on friendly terms with the US, but have the US pay rent for the military installations if any are kept (and they'll have to be) and make a much more Socialist and caring society. National health care, free college, etc. You know, like actual first-world nations do. Also nationalize all foreign-owned properties, no foreign-owned hotels, resorts, ranches etc.

I agree on all of your points. I like Hawaii very much. But, I seek to live in a place that is more connected to a more variety of cultural, economic, and social activities.

On a vaca there years ago, met a couple who moved there. On the visitor trail, you are treated nicely but trying to live and work there is another story. You're treated like an unwanted step child.
Actually less than 1% of people in HI are Hawaiian natives. Everyone else acts like they think they are. It’s not the elite spot they act like. Also so many fat people. There’s the same tourism in FL but nobody acts like it’s a big deal. HI needs to get over itself. “Hawaiian land stolen from Hawaiian people”. 🙄

Just because a place is beautiful and you perhaps love to vacation there does not make it right for you as a permanent home- moving to such a different environment requires real thought, understanding and a commitment to assimilate with the consciousness/reality of that place. the big island is where I live and if you want to move to Hawaii those your choices you shouldn't have anyone telling you what you can and can't do if you come to the land respected respecting people who are here it's not a tourist attraction and maybe your vacation but this is our home so if you come here just respect it you'll be okay

That's an issue that you face everywhere. All land is stolen. At this point in time so many people are migrating for different reasons. Tons of people are moving to where I live (SLC, UT) bc of the low cost of living compared to everywhere else especially Cali. we have awesome mountains and outdoor activities and an "abundance" of well paying jobs. Outsiders are definitely driving up the cost of living here and sure I'm mad about it (I can't buy a house now for a while bc outsiders are paying over asking price in cash...) but there's literally nothing you can do. So oh well. Hawaiian ppl don't get to treat ppl poorly or complain when its happening everywhere and has happened already.

It's hard to make it in Philadelphia, PA. I've found cheaper homes in Hawaii than I found in Philly. People move from all over, from one place to another. Hawaii is no different. You have to respect people wherever you go. Philly isn't for some, Brooklyn isn't for some, the U.S. Virgin Islands isn't for some...and at the same time many places ARE for many people. At the end of the day, the whole world is surrounded by an ocean. You have to force yourself to make it in Hawaii, if that's what you want to do.
