Aloha kākou! Mahalo iā ʻolua no kō ʻolua manaʻo e pili ana i ku'u ʻāina hānau! I especially appreciate the segment on the price of living here in Hawaiʻi. It's particularly hard for Kānaka ʻŌiwi (Indigenous Hawaiians) to live in our ancestral home. We are also heavily militarized, specifically here in Waiʻanae - the fifth largest impoverished community in the fake state of Hawaiʻi, which, according to a 2010 U.S. Census, is home to the largest population of Native Hawaiians in the world. With so much discontent, sorrow, and frustration as a result of multiple forced removals and displacement from places like Mākua, a very sacred place for our people, I'm glad good individuals like yourselves found a home here. As for those yet to arrive, please be mindful of the Indigenous population. Wakīkī, as is mentioned in this amazing video, is a tourist destination; however, it was not always so. Many Hawaiians were forcibly removed to make Wakīkī the place it is today. It is where our people and culture have become a mockery, where degradation of people and culture is commonplace. And, sadly, many of our people suffer from decades of displacement and dispossession. Come to Hawaii, but please remember your vacation destination is our ancestral home, one we are still attempting to reclaim for ourselves and our future descendants. A hui hou kākou! :)

Thank you for sharing this, as is it just as important to the Natives that live here as well. So much is to be learned and understood about the Hawaiian Islands. Many people see it as a destination getaway, but lest they forget about the history of this native land. Again, thank you!

Hawaii isn’t for everyone, but it damn sure is for me. I am done with the mainland. Mainland is cheaper, but hey, I can smile and say hi to the police in HI and not think that I’m about to friggin die.

Facts. I think Hawaii is the only state where black people are not the most incarcerated compare like Vermont and Iowa.
Benito, this is true. According to the 2019 Census, Blacks make up only 4.3% of the population. Pacific Islanders and Native Hawaiians are 25% of the population, and are often arrested as opposed to the black population.
I really enjoyed your honesty. I'm from California and I was thinking of moving my family to Hawaii. So, now we'll just visit and slowly make up our minds.

I have visited my daughter 7 times. She’s on the big island. Everything is soooo pricey there and the locals are not very aloha. The locals are very prejudice. If it weren’t for my daughter and grandkids living there , I would never return to such an unfriendly pricey place.
My son worked tourism in Kauai. He never really met any folks from the mainland, but he did meet plenty of homeless people, around Kauai who were not from Hawaii. He said for the most part people were ok, but he stayed in his lane and embraced the experience and rolled with it. He stated he would visit but not do tourism work out there ever again. The mngmt was horrible, $ hungry, employees had to ride a transit bus over an hour ride from employee housing to the resort he worked, there and back while you work 10 hour days, and the fact he said they will hire Americans from other states and house them, before hiring people from the mainland was sad , given the fact , the housing and homelessness situation is not good.

Many of us live with family and friends just to have somewhere to eat and shower then back to work we go.
Yes, multigenerational families are all too familiar here, mainly to ease the financial obligation regarding the cost of living in Hawaii. I cannot imagine not being able to have your sense of privacy and a home to call your own.

We LOVE our life in Hawai'i! We move to big island five years ago from Colorado. We prefer Hilo side to hotter and drier Kona side. That said, we've made the BEST friends who we consider ohana! Big island is VERY chill and not nearly as populated as Oahu. Big island is 4,300 sq miles with less than 200,000 people. Compare that to Oahu 597 sq miles and 960,000 people.
I love the Big Island except when you get when you get old and require surgery you have to fly to Oahu.
I moved to Oahu but now I live in Maui. I'm not going back to the mainland🤣

I’m in the Navy I was stationed at Pearl Harbor from 2013-2016 I had a good time there. Never experienced any racism the locals treated me well the police were cool they speak wave unless you speed on H-1 lol. Don’t got to worry about being shot as a black man. I felt safer on Oahu than any state in the USA. I’m thinking about taking a government job out there. Only downfall is the cost of living and traffic on H-1 and KAM Highway 😬😬😬 also black people can go anywhere on the island we are more welcome by the Samoans I know this for a fact (Waianae and Waipahu lived there so I know)

Living in the D.C. area the prices seem comparable. Housing, groceries, eating out, etc. In Hilo, the median price of a home is 37% lower than in Loudoun/Fairfax counties. A lot depends on where you're moving from.

Thank you for this comment, as I'm currently living in DC and considering a move to "paradise"...Would anyone here happen to know how expensive the local fruit is, at farmer's markets in Hawaii? I am whole food plant based, so I won't be needing milk, meat, processed goods...just fruit and veg
You guys are exaggerating a bit, we visit family and have picnics on the beach and enjoy our weather is way better than being stuck in an ac / heater house or piles of clothes, you don’t need to make $150,000.00 we’re not extravagant we kinda budget, of course if you are from Hawaii it’s a place to live, of course the mainland people are coming over to be homeless cuz it’s live able warmer, I have talked to a lot of people and they thought they could live on the beach, no thank goodness, I know a lot that has made it , don’t go to the rich areas to live if you don’t have the means staying in your budget like everyone else, you’ll make it and don’t buy unnecessary things, we can count a drive by, where up here it’s everyday somewhere crazy and Hawaii is safer and kinder people… they’ll stop to help, there’s a lot of resources no matter where you go… google them ask any local call 211 anywhere you will get help
Some of what was mentioned in the video are statistics and our personal experiences. Everyone's situation will be different no matter where you live. Some people will make it work despite the odds, and many will choose the latter.

local, born and raised here, most of the mainlanders I've met eventually feel confined on an Island. I've been to the mainland before and could never live anywhere else but Hawaii.

Aloha and hello! I am from Hawaii and its a beautiful place compare the Mainland. Hawaii is not Bad and Ugly. Specially the Ocean in Mainland is not clear like Hawaii. Weather is good and don't hang out in Honolulu try to visit another Island in Hawaii. Mahalo
I have been to Hawaii twice with my family and I’m looking into going to college there and me and my family are looking into living there for a few months to see how we like it and I always wondered how much it would cost to ship pets because well, we own 7 animal excluding fish that we would rehome. We have 2 dogs, 2 cats, a hamster, and 2 frogs and all I can think about is how expensive it’s going to be bringing them with us. But hey, Hawaii is so beautiful and when I am traveling there I am at such peace and I am truly happy so whatever you go to do!

shave ice is how it is pronounced and written (present tense)..On the Big Island, the locals there call it 'ice shave' (reversed). Unemployment rates in Hawaii for some time has been lower than the national average..less than 3% before the covid-19 quarantine which closed off businesses and brought up the unemployment rate to 37% (in April and was the highest in the country back then). watched from beginning to end in one instance...you kept my interest...!

Yes! The Centipedes in my home CONSTANTLY! I ask my neighbors about how to get rid of them and they just look at me as if I need to get used to it! The ONLY reason I regret moving from an apartment to a house

We have only had at least three in the home. We called Ecolab to spray the house, and seldomly see them. However, I will never get use to them EVER!!
You can use sticky traps, insecticide, Boric Acid, or just a regular shoe will do the trick. They normally come from outside, but they love a moist environment.
We had orders there last year and I had to tell my husband its not going to work. I'm sure he was disappointed but the financial part scared me... the cabin fever, the stuck on a island feeling, not seeing my family. And we are on a debt free journey and moving there wouldn't have allowed us to pay off our student loans as planned!! Thank you for this video!!

Hawaii is not for everybody. Da Aina has a way of sorting out who stays and who goes. It's all about the energy one exudes. If your vibe is respectful and positive then the Aloha Spirit of this place will embrace you. If it's negative and devisive then you will not flourish.

Girl, y'all ain't lying about nothing! I was stationed there in the early 2000s, as an 0-3/0-4...thank goodness we lived on Hickam. I worked at the Federal Building, no parking provided; it was cheaper to take your chances on getting a parking ticket than pay for parking...pathetic. And, it's very difficult to break into local culture/circle. I do miss the weather and the breeze though, and Bellows. continued success in your careers and marriage.

You're welcome! I've always wanted to visit Guam as well. I heard the island is tiny compared to Oahu. A word of advice, I wouldn't do back-to-back OCONUS tours. Nice!! Hickam and Bellows were my favorite beaches also. I also developed island fever for a little while after my second week there. The traffic was terrible. What about the geckos? I had them in my quarters and when I first moved in the giant flying roaches were terrible also. Thank God that the military exterminators got rid of them for me. I never saw a centipede when I lived there. They must be newer to the island. Someone must have moved there and brought them with them...smh. The flies were pretty bad. Hey Cherelle, I lived in Atlanta also, well actually in a little town called McDonough, if you ever heard of it. Most of my ken folks still live in the Atlanta area.
Hey, Stephanie! Yes, I'm familiar with McDonough. I have family that lives nearby as well. I forgot about the geckos and their droppings that they leave behind. We just let them be so they can feast on the bug population here. Centipedes are a thing in Hawaii. Every day or so someone in housing is complaining about them. Yes, island fever is something that you have to deal with. We just try to stay as active as we can until our time is up. But I appreciate your feedback. I really enjoy hearing from you. what about black women and hair? natural products, getting your braided, is it possible? what do you do to maintain your crown?
Hi, Furtyle. There are plenty of black women who braid hair on the island. I have not had my hair braided by any of them, but I've seen their work, and they do a great job. Braids are more expensive here than the mainland. There is a black-owned hair salon here as well. The salon is called Salon MeAmour, and Ebony is the stylist and owner. I usually see her every six months for maintenance (shampoo & trim). I hope this helps.

We were in Maui, but we definitely would like to visit oahu.
Ohau is overly saturated. Once the family and I took a trip to Maui, it was a completely different scenery. Maui is very quiet, cooler temperatures, more landscaping, and very up-country. It was nice to gain a different experience. I would certainly recommend that you visit Ohau. You will not be disappointed.

Hi. Yes, the cost of living here is very expensive. Most people who come to live on the island primarily come to Ohau due to the hotels, restaurants, shopping, military presence, etc.
They have affordable apartments through location rental management or Hawaiian properties. They have food stamps and housing programs that's why people can live there and be low income
Most locals avoid Waikiki like the plague. Locals live everywhere else.

Great video and your perspective. When you say $170k annual income to survive are you basing that off of your family size? Also, you mentioned your grocery bill $300-400 a month, did you mean to say week? (because I’m like ummm, yeah that’s impossible..lol.. and if you can feed all of them on $400 a week I’m seriously IMPRESSED) 😲

Thank you! The annual income of $170k was based on statistics. However, $120k seems ideal. I spend anywhere from $120-180 on groceries bi-weekly. I buy mostly meat and items that can stretch until the next pay period. We also make enough food to have leftovers for the next day. Sometimes you have to make it work without breaking the bank. I dunno if we live on the same island or not. But once you get out of Honolulu and are traveling H1 WB you DEFINITELY see people flyin 80 through traffic going towards Kapolei. Crazy HI drivers! :)

I agree. It's so strange that you don't see that type of action. You'll see HPD down the interstate, but they all seem to be "off-duty" when their lights are off. However, the accidents are another story....

Hi we went to Maui this month Dec 2021 for my husband’s birthday . We both fell in love with the environment and tropical breeze . Which is what brought me to your video . I wanted to see what other people if my culture are experiencing from my culture . I could see us living there .
Hi. What a fantastic experience you two had. Maui is such a gorgeous place to visit. Unlike Oahu, it's tranquil and not as touristy. However, I'm glad my video was recommended, and you had the chance to watch it. Good luck to you and your husband.
You left out a few important things. I’ve heard repeatedly that of the people who move from the mainland to Hawaii, 95% of those people don’t survive more than 1 to 2 years in Hawaii, and have to return to the mainland, often financially ruined.
I heard that there was a lot of corruption in building that elevated mass transit, and the mass transit was started away from the downtown area and built towards the downtown area, so that the system is useless until it’s completed. If they started the mass transit system in the downtown area first, it would be gradually useful to more areas, as the system is being built.
The cost of electricity is huge! I think it was about 37 cents per kilowatt hour, which is 2 to 3 times as much as other places. I also heard that when the utilities generate power with wind or solar, they can charge the same as if the power was generated with diesel, even though the cost to the utility is lower, because of the corruption between the utilities and the state legislature.
I suggest that you do a video in a grocery store to give your viewers some sticker shock on prices! A dozen eggs cost 68 cents in Florida or Minnesota, compare that to $5 in Hawaii! A gallon of milk is less than $2 in Florida or Minnesota. Even a can of beans, which has a shelf life of years, and can be shipped by sea, the cheapest way to ship anything, costs about 50% more in Hawaii.
I’ve also heard that Hawaii has about a one week supply of food. If the shipping lines are cut, then there’s going to be severe problems in Hawaii. So, have a personal supply of food in Hawaii, don’t live hand to mouth!
I think you should show how much you’d have to pay in Hawaii for a house similar to a $700K house in Georgia. I bet a similar house in Hawaii would be about $2M to $4M.
I also heard that healthcare is horrible in Hawaii! Maybe healthcare is better if you have a military connection.
I heard that public education in Hawaii is horrible! A “C” student on the mainland is an “A” student in Hawaii, because they dumb down public education in Hawaii. Private schools cost about $20K per year per student in Hawaii.
It’s true, that the climate in Hawaii is nothing short of fantastic! But there are so many negatives in Hawaii, that make Hawaii a better place to visit, than being a resident.
Wow! 68 cents for eggs and $2 for milk?! We r in the Midwest and it’s $5 for milk and $4 for eggs. That’s amazing

Lol, to be honest, it's not the cost of living so much. Our issues were the distance away from family and the cost to make it happen. We as a family love to travel, and Hawaii has some drastic limitations.

My husband has been stationed here for 12 years throughout his career, and I was stationed here from 2010-2014. After my husband and I met, we then PCS'd to Georgia and decided to return to Hawaii for the last time. We were spoiled when we lived on the mainland, and we do miss being back home. Island fever is real, and although Hawaii is a nice place to be, it is only suitable for short visits in my opinion. Some people enjoy being here, but we are ready for the next chapter.
Aloha...could you elaborate further on the culture of Hawaii and the beautiful native Hawaiian people from your personal experiences? Also, last time I visited Maui I think I probably saw about four black people. Nevertheless, in talking with the locals they are very proud of their land! I would suggest people do their historical history research about Hawaii. It will certainly provide a different perspective other than just being a vacation place to go.
Hi, Popolo. From my perspective, the integrity of the Hawaiian culture is very much preserved. Although Hawaii has so much to offer, such as the beautiful terrain, weather, and rich history, all are respected. Locals will welcome you. However, some wish to keep the island to themselves. Learn as much as you can before your visit, including language, culture, history, etc. Although some tension exists between locals and tourists, try your best to treat people with respect and kindness. As far as Maui is concerned, you probably did see a few minorities there. I can't argue with that.

Hi Cherelle, That's cool, so you know London in that sentimental way. Trust my words, you have been fortunate to be ushered into a different viewpoint of life. Life in London makes you transport to anywhere that the sun and blue waters appear. If you do ever feel tempted only do the summer season, the climate has diminished from early seventies to nineties. What would us guys here do without our dream places in this weather … Lol !

My son worked tourism in Kauai. He never really met any folks from the mainland, but he did meet plenty of homeless people, around Kauai who were not from Hawaii. He said for the most part people were ok, but he stayed in his lane and embraced the experience and rolled with it. He stated he would visit but not do tourism work out there ever again, or even think about living.The mngmt was horrible, $ hungry, employees had to ride a transit bus over an hour ride from employee housing to the resort he worked, there and back while you work 10 hour days, and the fact he said they will hire Americans from other states and house them, before hiring people from the mainland was sad , given the fact , the housing and homelessness situation is not good. I have a question so I’m not In the military and I’m currently saving money to move there one day are there any more tips that could possibly help me in the future.
The only tip that I can provide is for you to do your research about the island itself and what jobs are available. Find out what it will cost to ship your belongings and a vehicle if you have one. I would also recommend visiting the island for at least a week or two to get an actual idea of what it would be like to live there. I hope this helps, and good luck!

Hi, Chastie. Nothing is off-limits here. There are so many places to visit and see. The Four Seasons Hotel in Ko Olina is a great place to stay. As well as Kahala Hotel & Resort and Turtle Bay. Restaurants are plenty: Roy's, 53 by the Sea, La Mer, Morton's Steakhouse. I enjoyed dining at each of the restaurants mentioned, so I highly recommend them. Congratulations on your honeymoon, and good luck with your stay.
Hickam is a trash beach. Yall need to get around more! There are so many amazing beaches here! Bellows is a decent one though! Get out to the FAAAAR west side and you'll see amazing/clear beaches.

I moved to Kauai with my family in 1969 when I was 12. We came from Detroit Very different. But as you portrayed, lots of good, lots of challenges. The bugs are not bugs, they are feat...nah they're bugs.

@@CherelleVictoria I grew up on Kauai and parents lived there until the end of their lives, but I live in Honolulu now. But I have been back many, many times. It is beautiful, and the people are really nice. Living there is like living in any relatively small rural community but definitely worth visiting, Lots of great things to do and see. Food options have gotten so much better than I was a kid.

What do you think of moving to one of the Hawaii islands during COVID? How has COVID affected life there?
I think the Island is at a better advantage due to isolation. As of now, there are 2,817 presumed cases of COVID, with the death toll at 189. Honolulu has 12k cases that have been reported as opposed to the other counties who have 1,000 known cases or less. All individuals who arrive to the Hawaiian Islands are subject to a 14-day mandatory self-quarantine. Violators have been fined ($5000 max) and imprisoned since the state takes this very seriously. However, people move every day, and I think you should do what you're comfortable with. I hope this helps ♥️

We have had 3 centipedes inside the house since we moved here 10 months ago. They were dying so they didn't move as fast. We had one in the light fixture above the island in the kitchen. We have the same house as you. I don't know how in the world that centipede got in there. Lol Thank you for sharing

I lived on schofield for 6 years when I was a kid. I saw snow fall once early in the morning one december. Sometimes there was dew and frost on the lawns as we walked to school. It absolutely does get colder than 60 in the winter. We used to turn our oven on and open the door while eating breakfast before school on really cold mornings. It can get down into the high 40s overnight.

My husband and I have been looking into moving to Hawaii just not sure of which island ect. especially with us having children so school districts are big for us and is the main determining factor as to which island to move to. I’m an Ultrasound Tech and my husband is a weirder so work as well is big!!

Thank you, Anna!! I don't much. However, you must fill out a form 4140 (Letter of Intent) for your homeschool in zoned for your neighborhood. Once submitted, may begin homeschooling at any time. From what I understand from parents who share the same interests as yours, some highschools will not accept homeschool credits. So that's something to look into. However, many parents suggest that you look into Power Homeschool/Acellus (K-12). The program is fully accredited with teachers who can monitor student assignments.
