"Let's move to an island without rule of law, property rights, power, or plumbing. What could go wrong?"
...plus drug runners with machine guns.
I know right. My thoughts exactly. What a crazy story!
Let’s live Castaway and bring our kids!
Why do you think the island was so cheap to buy?
This is what I dream about for all these sovereign citizens, that they all go and live in a remote island far away from civilisation!
Lol! $50k to build their 'resort'!. Calling them "clueless" is a little too kind imo.
This reminds me of the movie Falcon and the Snowman where Sean Penn sprung it on his retired parents that he's building the family a big new house in Costa Rica. "It's in the architectural stage! 4200 square feet, it's the retirement home you've always dreamed of!" Luckily his parents were smart enough to not go for it. He wound up in prison within 6 months, so the choice was made for them anyway.
agreed
Why prison@@Skank_and_Gutterboy
Not exactly resort. 6 Cabanas, a restaurant and a main house could easily be built for 50k 23 years ago in that area.
500,000 would be needed.
Who moves their small children to an undeveloped island in a dangerous area? Are these parents crazy?
Yes.
And selfish.
A bunny!
Yes
Right. A clueless need for reckless, impulsive adventure would be more forgivable (maybe even slightly endearing) if they weren’t dragging around minors and running from debts to their own families.

Good point. A bit like a spoiled "spare prince" who did nothing for 40 years and his mattress "actress" wife get paid to speak about "burn out."
She missed the rat race so she created her own by having an affair and creating controversy.
I was wondering the same. Rat race.. like she was 9-5 🙄

As soon as I heard about the affair with the local, my thoughts immediately took me to a scenario with him returning to the island with guns. That was just so dumb, these locals are the ones who have your back. It is a miracle they were ever seen again; Who would want to stay on the island after the invasion? There must be more to this story; The judge let everyone walk? That seems odd, even in a highly corrupted society.
I can imagine that the Mother was a drop in replacement teacher for their schooling. I bet the kids wanted to go home.

Growing up on the Mexican border, it boggles my mind how naive people can be of Latin American politics and traditions and just think they can move in without any concept of what they are getting themselves in!
I live thousands of miles away in Ireland, and I wouldn't dream of living there. I just assume that death is an ever-present possibility, an inevitability even.

Some people seem to be drawn magnetically to chaos. I’m exhausted and stressed out just hearing about this story. Whew! Good lord thank you for my simple, orderly life as a suburban debt-free square.
Here, here!
Yes, yay to dullness!
You correct. Some people are drawn to chaos. They like to create drama if it hasn’t already been created.
This couple had a lot of debt when they lived in England, which means they’re irresponsible. So it’s no surprise that these financially irresponsible people would try to buy an island and start a resort with very little research on the financial costs as well as the requirements to do such a thing in a country known for corruption.
A few years ago, our family wanted to take a trip to an exotic island or other tropical location. My sister did the research and a lot of the places we were considering were too dangerous for tourists. So we did not go to those places. She did research before we made plans. This couple could have done the same thing. Do research first before you sell your house and move your family to some far away location where you don’t understand the language or the customs.

Nicaragua? Are you KIDDING me? Only someone on the verge of being legally insane would move a family with children to a place like that, unless of course they had millions of dollars to spend on their very own security force! It was called the "Mosquito Coast" for goodness sake. Perhaps the island could be called "Malaria Island" instead of "Jenique"! I am a parent and now old enough to realise the stupid things I did financially in my younger years and that I am STILL suffering the the effects of now as I prepare to hit my 60's, but even I I would NEVER have gone THAT far. This is because Grande is a text book vulnerable narcisist. He is consumed by neurosis and self-loathing over his middling intellect and unfortunate physcal limittations . He obviously highly disagreeable, and the morality and compassion that should govern his engagement with the world is missing, and that space is a dark void he must ignore -which he does but putting all of his energy into finding examples of his own distortions in other people and then making videos about them.
Mosquito coast, hmmmm, wonder why it's called that 🤔 one of the first things that came to mind is how they thought their kids would thrive- monsoon season= no visitors, and it's just them. This is such a dumb and dumber situation, I'm surprised both adults made it into adulthood to begin with.

Yes, I am surprised she stayed as long as she did and bought a different island!! I would have been out of there after one night.
But wait, I wouldn’t have gone in the first place…
Well, the only way she could make money was by taking her clothes off so that tells you something
It’s hard to believe this married couple thought they could develop a small tropical island into a scuba diving resort replete with multiple bungalows and a restaurant on only 50,000 pounds. With such a ridiculously unrealistic understanding of finances I’m surprised they didn’t get into money trouble before their island pipe dream.
I have not seen exactly what they plan to build. It might not be too far of the mark financially.

@@mangore623 23 years ago It would be plenty. Here in rural Mexico you can build a nice 2 bedroom house for roughly 20k today.

This first part of the story reminds me of my parents. They moved us all around to ugly “fixer uppers” with the intent to flip them for profit. Only problems were they didn’t have any money to make renovations. Only dreams of doing it. Sucked for us kids who had to live out in the boonies while they fought and bickered about not having any money. Constantly having to switch to new schools also.
My Mom pulled the same crap she was a “Real Estate Agent” and a “Morgage Broker”. I perpetually lived in construction and chaos. We moved to Cape Cod in the 90s and I went to a different school every year until High School. My Mom is also an Alcoholic so she is an actual Nightmare. My Mom bilked more goofball guys out of family houses than I could count. She had a new “Rich” idoit every year. She is now “retired” and on SSI. All her bad deeds cought up with her and she is now acting like a schizophrenic patient and I’m worried she has early onset Dementia. I have always told her she would go to a Nursing Home and a shitty one so that’s what it looks like is coming next.
@@samsalamander8147 yup., press repeat. thought I LOVED to move along every year!! I thrived, but my three siblings did not. The Agent or Broker gig is to "claim" she has a job. Usually that's with moneyed types that don't want to really work until mom/dad pass on and they get the moola.
I am from Nicaragua, and I cannot understand how someone would so blindly try to buy an island in in tribal/communal land, in perhaps the most remote region of the country, in the middle of international drug trafficking routes, without checking local ordinances and national laws regulating land purchases.
Such a tragedy.
It's all about the guy who "sold" the islands being running a con to bilk very naive people and sell them foolish dreams. Look into the Plymouth Colony in the US. People were sold dreams there and then boarded the Mayflower, convinced that fortune awaited even though they did not know how to raise crops. Likewise the Donner Party who was convinced by a businessman Hastings who stood to gain from Oregon trail families taking the "Hastings Cutoff" which he promised in pamphlets was a developed better route, in the hopes that foolish people would believe him and do the development work instead of what actually happened, which was their famous and tragic case of cannibalism and madness. Lots of Businesses are cons to defraud people. Buyer beware. (Also speaking here as someone whose adventurous parents led to kidnappings etc during childhood, all survived against the odds, which was fine and made me wiser: Stay out of such areas!)
These dollar house buys in Europe are also like that: right in a mafia area and/or cultural area where if you build and block waterfront in Sicily, the house is blown up. Surprise.
Teodore was WARNED about PHIL "the guy's an interior DECORATOR!"
A “Decorator” in the UK is the equivalent of a “House Painter” in the US. The guy got the better of four armed men, and saved his family, so he was no wall flower.

By then, she had already moved on with a long-haired, snake-breeder named Steve Hill. Phil's decomposing body was shown in an open casket, with Jayne (wearing a pink satin bustier) forcing Pokemon cards and trinkets in his pockets before burying him on the snake farm owned by her new lover." I love your delivery, straight to the point, facts, evidence and no personal attacks.
I sailed my boat through Nicaragua and I found the people to be good-hearted in my limited experiences there. I went ashore on many islands on both coasts of Central America and spent time in Columbia as well and of course there are some dangers but mostly its petty crime. People are making a go of it in all kinds of places down there but it takes a lot more than just an adventurous attitude. Those folks had the right attitude, they were just totally clueless. And they attracted some bad people. Columbia, El Salvador and parts of Belize would make Bluefields seem rather tame by comparison. As for corruption , it's everywhere down there.
