This is a wise man...I used to run a teaching studio and teach in stores for a long time. I really can tell Stephen knows his stuff and is genuinely passionate about helping drummers grow. Awesome teacher!

Hi Stephen, and thanks again. Your videos always have something valuable to my new gig as drummer and multi skilled artist in a band and art collective. The #3 thing is my most strong element and is probably the main reason I'm taking to drums as fast as I did electric bass, vocals, keys in my teens studying Iron Maiden and Rush, and of course The Beatles. I didn't get a regular drum gig until just this last summer, but I had one off gigs on kit as far back as my senior year in high school and in my Rush days I did in fact learn Neil Peart's parts at least in foot tapping and hand slapping fashion, which gave me the basic coordination to approach the kit in my late 40's and mostly just have to train up the physical tolerances of my limbs. It's been a process to dissolve my habits of tension I developed in my teens way before I got the Robert Fripp infused instructions in my mid 30's about ergonomics, plus Tai Ji training that got my posture from a tension induced slouch to basically upright and aligned.
To get to the heart of the matter it's #3 that's my take on the fundamental element of this triad as listening is first and foremost for every musician. What musician comes to fruition without first hearing the sounds of the bards still carrying the tradition when we're too young and small to hold an instrument or really sing beyond a wail or a coo?
And thank you once again as I'm also blessed with two young students in my early years with drums in full swing so your teaching methods greatly inform how to transmit the tradition to my new students. On the music side I've learned that it's best to have some jamming time with my 11 year old and 19 year old drum apprentices. They're more attentive to the stick control and coordination mantras, yes cause it's a mantra when you loop it and careful what you loop cause the repeated phrases stick best when we have time together to just enjoy the gift music brings...the gift! For us humans our reason sense is so sharp that without music life is unbearable. Thus the widespread despair among the children of robot. Chops are human aping robot. Jamming is totally human as robot can't really do that well.

I'm from Birmingham in the UK. Went to a jazz gig recently and there was an excellent drummer he was ancient. He told me he taught Bonham and thought technically he was poor. He'd pop over once a week after working locally in the car industry but thought he wouldn't go anywhere. I think the key is to listen to music without any visual prompts and play along. Some tuition is important but I think the key is to get a feel for the genre you love.

I personally have a breakthrough every time I play more than 1 or 2 hrs... when I do that 2-3 x a week it's significant.
