Love the box. Thank you for showing the wood splitting when you were chiseling the cutout for the hinges. It's nice to see that anyone can have a problem and that there is probably a solution so that the project can still be finished.
David Waelder Years ago I had to make a lid for an outdoor UPS/Fed Ex/Post Office large package drop off thing......a true nightmare. I was told back then that for exterior use, sealing the endgrain with wax is a must or it splits to hell in one season.
David you really did a amazing job on the box for your mom,i like how much time and care you put into it,the leather was a very nice touch, love the channel and all the projects, all the best
I was searching for some ideas on how to wrap a box in leather because I want to add a pattern and I'm much better at stamping leather than engraving wood. I didn't think of doing it like this until watching your video. Beautiful! I'm going to combine it with another tutorial to create a dice tower box.
Wow, this is beautiful! Nothing like a simple design put together with extreme care. Loved it! Might follow your lead for some gifts for my wife and ma. Good stuff!
Great box. Ouch. Saw the cut on the hand. Thats what happens when you make great things... I learn a lot when I watch your videos. Thanks for doing them.
Ipe is a really tough wood to work. Please use. A mask with those exotic woods. I have scrollsawn for almost 40 years without a mask. I now have a 15-month cough and have not cut in 4 months. Dust for thought. Beautiful work.
When you glued the hinge on before screwing it...I cried...because of how many times I've tried to dry fit hinges and completely fucked up the fit of the box.
Great video David. Questions for you: What type of glue did you use on the corners? And did you intend for the glue to change the color of the grain on the cut surfaces at the joint? What finish did you use and how many coats total?
beautiful box. I am thinking of using this box as an urn with slight modification like adding a picture area or a plaque. What is your opinion using this species of wood. I am looking for the longest lifespan species of wood for this project. Maybe other species?
I like the idea of gluing the hinge after the lid and box are aligned. What glue did you use? NOrmally you would have to dismantle the box to finish it and then re-glue
You know sir. Yours has been the first video iv watcbed all the way tgrough for a long time. I was entreaged and excited to see what you were doing next and the final box looked fantastic. Subbed and rang the bell my friend.
Yo David, this is a nice project for that special ocasion, I was even thinking in making a few of them with the same procedure and one will have a padded cushion top, I really don't know why but women tend to use it to stick pins and needles when using it near the sewing machine. Tnx for sharing it and please say hello to Don Julio heheheh cheers man!!! :D
David, your mom has a nice box...sorry, you stick your chin out and you get hit. great work, nice details. learn something every time when watching your work. Keep posting more work.
David, During your video on making a Ipe Wood & Leather Box, what was the material you brushed onto the finger joints prior to sanding. It looks like the answer too making a very tight joint in those tiny fingers. Thanks. Mr. Bill
What happened from 4:19 to 4:39? you took out the wood dust from the sander and mixed it with wood glue to fill any gaps in the joint? I think that's what you did. Thanks. Just a regular Titlebond wood glue for this?
Close but no cigar. He used fine finishing dust from the sander mixed with tung oil to fill the gaps after applying the first coat of tung oil. After that he sanded it again and gave it second tung oil coating.. On the gluing he used wet systems two part epoxy, seen 2:17 on left, mixed in metal container on the right. Only place he used regular wood glue was to connect ply into frame.... Damn i'm too good on analyzing videos..-.-
Love the box. Thank you for showing the wood splitting when you were chiseling the cutout for the hinges. It's nice to see that anyone can have a problem and that there is probably a solution so that the project can still be finished.
Ha thank you! A bit of quick surgery- that IPE is tough to work with.
David Waelder Years ago I had to make a lid for an outdoor UPS/Fed Ex/Post Office large package drop off thing......a true nightmare. I was told back then that for exterior use, sealing the endgrain with wax is a must or it splits to hell in one season.
You could say it is a hard wood. Hah.
David you really did a amazing job on the box for your mom,i like how much time and care you put into it,the leather was a very nice touch, love the channel and all the projects, all the best

When you glued the hinge on before screwing it...I cried...because of how many times I've tried to dry fit hinges and completely fucked up the fit of the box.
