You know, the one thing I really love about your wood working videos is your care for safety. I can clearly see you taking extra steps to make sure you are doing things in a way that are oriented towards safety and it’s a pleasant thing to watch. Too often I, as a long time wood worker, see UA-cam videos with just an array of bad work habits that should anyone emulate them are likely to result in disaster and injury. So I really appreciate you doing things safely. Well done.
Woodwork and leather craftsmanship are a dying art... materials are expensive, but this work is amazing! We need to continue to cultivate it. Great video!
Darbin, I am sitting at office now. Working. Then I looked at a beer and decide after duty finished, go for couple of beers in to the shop. Excellent, projects now I got idea for my wife for wooden box. God I got an idea. Thanks ONE MORE TIME.
Hi, lovely box. It would be cool if you could consider investigating how the victorian writing slopes work, look and function. You could do something more modern in the same way. What is lacking in this box is a surface to write on. The writing slopes has that "problem" solved. Keep up the good work!
I have watched your videos for several years now. Always liked your aesthetics and how you share your design process with the viewers. This video is your best! It is obvious the time and care you put into the design/build as well as editing. I liked the flashes of August and the doggy. You have a more relaxed pace of delivery lately (speaking). Nice!
Those boxes with the leather are grandiose. I am thinking your Hubby is beginning to enjoy his creative skills also. Having a loving partner to share in life's hobbies is the ultimate workshop.
JESUS CHRIST THESE BOXES ARE STUNNING! OMG! I was researching adding a shoulder strap to a pochade box that I'm making and ran into this video. MAN O MAN, WANT!! I now need a circular saw table and my own shed just to make one of these boxes. LOL j/k. But seriously, this is a seriously grown and sexy box. WELL DONE!!
Love this book! ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxpCNxqmAkyjN6NPx1fyB7QiEFWyO5mUWL it is simply one-of-a-kind! I really love it, because karah explained all tools required to have the job done, not mentioning the fabulous diy pallets ideas. I'm pretty sure this will be a fresh start in my new endeavour. Amazon was great, they delivered on time. Thank you!
Very nice. Love the idea of boxes and the leather is a nice touch. My high school woodworking instructor made simple unfinished pine boxes for a Toll painting shop. Very popular.
Lynn, I really like this project. Its so cool looking, and so useful and adaptable to things that just about everyone needs in their lives. And I also wish that you and your family get a few sunny days to get out and enjoy. Thanks for sharing your brain storms with the rest of us mortals out here.
The leather work really transforms those boxes! Its great to see your process of making all the components and putting it together. I've thought some time about getting in to leather working, and your videos on this craft always inspire me to try it out.
Very nice boxes Linn, Have built a few my self, but the leather is such an awesome addition, really makes it pop... something very classic and nostalgic about it. keep up the great videos and projects. Thanks, from Central OR. woodworker.
Beautiful bag. I drill small holes into the top of the ends of the joints, I glue in a bit of brass rod. It’s soft enough to clip flush and sand smooth. I’d also recommend using rivets along the straps as well as the glue.
Oh my god. Thank you so much i was trying to figure out how to make something like this myself and i havent done leather working a ton so i was worried about how to add the leather into it and you literally made exactly what i was picturing! Seeing someone else go thru the steps help a lot
I love the projects that you are making.. Those wood and leather bags are nice case for Raspberry Pi.. with built-in display, keyboard, power supply.. like a laptop powered by the Raspberry Pi..
You're amazing and truly an inspiration. Thank you for sharing your craftsmanship and appreciation for what you do. I would love to make something half as beautiful.
I can so relate. Oh love your videos. I loved to make books and my father was an amazing wood worker. so these videos are wonderful. From the way you speak, I think its safe to say this... I bet your studio smells AMAZING. I grew up with the smells of wood and still love it. so so much nicer than plastic. HAve you found pyrography yet, for embellishing your projects. Peter Child does fine wire point that will let you have lots of detail to your designs.
These cases came out with the right combination of style and practicality! I like how you pay attention to the use first and how each piece takes on it's own character as it is built!
I love your boxes, they have a fantastic vintage look to them and have a real high quality look. I found it informative and therapeutically relaxing to watch the video of the boxes being made and fitted with the leather leather. You should make more and sell these as your very talented and I’m certain they will sell fast
I've actually been building a three drawer range box for antique muzzleloader rifles out of oak. So far it coming out ok. I'm looking to add some internal organizers and external straps made of leather so I really like the idea of mixing the two medias.
Great video top notch craftsmanship , love your work shop. We're did you learn to use all them tools ! Will definitely be watching for more of your videos thanks so much for sharing.
Thanks for the video. You solved a couple of questions I had about my current project. And those boxes are just lovely. I know what my next project will be. Lol.
It is really awesome that a woman likes wood and leather working!! It is really unusual to see that. Great work on the bags i really love them makes me think of steam punk and explorers
Inspiring project! As a painter and illustrator who just started woodworking, I look forward to make myself a beautiful box like this. :-) Thanks for sharing.
This is by far the best woodworking book I have ever read, *TopFineWoodworking. Com* . My woodworking teacher endorses it to all of his students. I am impressed how authors managed to write very detailed topics. I`m surprised by the material and didn`t have a tough time following the lessons..
Good stuff... I like your cases a lot. Using synthetic sinew (sin-you) is about the best "thread" for these and other leather projects. It's really tough and doesn't rot while giving a very traditional look. Some minimalistic, tasteful wood burning of trim design or outdoor scenes/animals, depending upon how much exposed wood you leave, would be a pleasant option, which you could even continue into the leather work. The box joint is also known as a "finger joint" as opposed to the dovetail joint. The dovetail is stronger but more complicated and not really necessary, especially if you're covering up the visual esthetic of them. I'm trying to figure out how I want to make more traditional, leather over wood trunks and cases, cir. 1880s-1920s. A time I think was it's pinical, when people were really traveling around thanks to the industrial age being in full bloom yet things were still hand crafted with quality and care. I think starting with a smooth, light yet reinforced case made of steel strap skeletons, Luan, sheet-tin and leather with doubled corners and hand forged brads/fasteners. I just need an old pattern to get me started. 😀
Very nice project! I had a thought about the leather inserts - perhaps securing them with velcro or similar rather than contact cement so that you could swap them out in the future if you found another use for them. Would be much easier to get them out then. Thanks for sharing your talents!
love it! :) i'm taking wood and metalsmithing this semester in school and we had to make a memory box and i used old leather belts for hinges :) so this is timely for me :) thanks!
