    Oof. Some embarrassing calls here. Just goes to show: refereeing is HARD. There's no such thing as referee practice - the only way we get better is doing games. If players and coaches want better referees, they need to stop abusing referees into quitting.

    • @Not_a_smart_man
      @Not_a_smart_man Рік тому +3

      Absolutely. We have the benefit of seeing camera replays even though a lot of these should have easily been called on the field. But it all comes down to needing on-field experience. Believe me, you can only learn so much from watching clips/online training. And the big issue is that these men's leagues (or is it a single league?) that IST films embody everything that is bad about player behavior that drives referees from the sport, and then you're left with subpar refs who then have to get experience in these types of games to learn how to handle them, but by getting experience you will make mistakes, which will make you receive abuse, which will make you quit doing it. It's really a tough situation.

      To be fair.. let's say we film 100 games. We only post maybe 20 that have controversial moments.
      So it's not a fair representation of the area & games we film.
      The rest of the games are mild tempered and well officiated.
      Unfortunately those games don't get the views

      abuse was what drove me from officiating. This was 25 years ago....I was officiating a football match (mind you, this was just intramural games in college). One of the players drove his forearm into the opponents' neck, for which I gave him a deserved red card. the team then proceeded to surround me and abuse me verbally.
      Near the end of the game, one of the same team's players proceeded to yank their opponent down by the collar so hard, it left a mark on the player's neck. I gave them another red card, for which the team proceeded to chase me around the pitch. I then blew my whistle to signal a forfeit as I was worried for both my and the other team's safety. As I was walking off the pitch, the offending team grabbed me and tried to drag me to the parking lot. Thankfully, bystanders and my fellow referees intervened.
      I decided there and then, that $5/hr just wasn't worth it. Yes, that's how little referees earned back then.

    A significant percentage of these were correct calls...even if some were really bad. As a referee, we all make mistakes; even the best referees sometimes make bad mistakes. The alternative is not having officials. I appreciate IST saying that the majority of referees do a good job, even if those games don't rack up the views.

      Referees make very few mistakes per match compared to players, yet players don't appear to receive abuse and violence anywhere as often and as significant as referees do. But, of course, the player has better knowledge of the laws of the game than the referee. Coaching staff - even more. Let's not forget about the avergage spectator! They know an incredible amount more of the rules than officials do. Maybe the hours of training and studying that referees put in to allow the beautiful game run seems to be insignificant as everyone else apparently knows best. Unfortunately, it will always be the many against the few.

    Hello. I agree there are some big mistakes in this video, however some of the decisions here are correct, why are they included? I'm also a referee and enjoy a lot of your videos, but making referees look bad when their decisions are correct makes no sense. By the way, a tackle isn't necessarily clean even if you get the ball. If excessive force is used or there is a dangerous tackle, it is punishable.

      @@ISTSoccer I had a proper look and realised my cursory glance at the video earlier was a bit too cursory. Here are the clips and my take on these situations:
      0.00-3.40 All these are refereeing errors.
      3.45 Correct free kick, might have given a yellow here but I don't think it's clear cut, it depends on what the referee has allowed until this point in the match.
      4.25 This might be a free kick. It's very soft contact though and frankly I'd expect the white player to be able to stand on her feet, it's very light contact.
      4.29 Referee follows the ball, a human mistake. It's a late kick and should be punished with a yellow card. White player still falls very easily though.
      4.40 This is obviously an awful mistake and I completely understand the reaction from the players. The older of the referees handles the aftermath very badly.
      6.30 Correct decision as white n. 12 gets a slight touch on the ball.
      6.58 Red defender's right hand seems to hit the opponent's face, this is a free kick even if he wins the ball itself cleanly, and a potential yellow card.
      7.25 Correct freekick, but this is a borderline red card for the yellow attacker. Feet off the ground, lunges in with a lot of force, studs out.
      8.00 I misunderstood this incident at first viewing. Yes, it's a mistake, the foul is outside the box.
      8.45 Yeah this is awful.
      9.25 Looks like a clean challenge, I think the referee gives it because he makes a little lunge into the challenge.
      9.40 Oooof. Yeah...
      10.05 This is not a free kick although the defender taps his heel as he falls. The reaction from the spectators is unacceptable nonetheless.
      10.40 Yep, a terrible call.
      Like I said I enjoy these videos. More footage and compilations of referees for better or worse would be very interesting, both good decisions and bad.

  • @holmj12

    2:40 hard to blame the ref for not seeing the foul occurred in the penalty area. Definitely strange to not call the foul right away, but a foul is correct, yellow card is correct, just missed the pk which is tough in real time.

    • @DC-kr9rm
      @DC-kr9rm Рік тому

      I think fans have a hard time accepting a right call when a referee gets to it at an unusual way. The referee may have thought it was clean then got to the player and realized the extent of the tackle and changed his mind. And for the record for anyone reading this, as long as the ball is out of play, the referee is fully within his right to make the call at this point. Good on the referee for getting the foul at least, even if he didn't get it inside the penalty area.

    • @vika0194

      That’s a very easy call. Clearly inside. Whenever it looks outside it’s inside because of the momentum. Simple referee training.

    • @holmj12
      @holmj12 Рік тому

      @@vika0194 you have a very different definition of "very easy" then a vast majority of people.
      As a referee, the whole falling scenario is not how referees are trained. Referees need to see the foul occur in the penalty area. Referees are told to ignore where the fouled player falls and focus on where the foul occured. At full speed and when you don't have the right angle it is very difficult to get the right decision. This is why at the pro level VAR is allowed to be used to help the referee with this import and difficult decision.
      Unless you are 100% sure it occurred inside the penalty area (which includes the line) then it occurred outside.

    • @vika0194
      @vika0194 Рік тому

      @@holmj12 When a player runs towards the penalty area and gets fouled and it seems like it's clearly inside, it's 99,99% outside. And vice versa. Look at any of these cases. Refs always make the incorrect call and get corrected by VAR when this scenario happens. I am a referee myself and this is simple mathematics and momentum.
      Has nothing to do with ''what you see''. Because what you see is incorrect because of the high speed.

    Just because someone wins the ball on a tackle doesn't mean they take out the player and foul them in some way. That first tackle is like that and I agree with the ref.
