As long as you persevere and wear them as directed by your Orthodontist, in a few days you'll find that you can speak perfectly with them in. Patients often get so used to them that they find it easier to speak with them in than out! Good luck and don't give up!
Yes it's difficult and involves some mashing and a lot of practice but you will get there! If you find it very difficult some Orthodontists will allow you to take them out as long as they go back in straight after food!
Thanks for the enquiry! Each case is specific but a reasonable expectation would be 1 month per millimetre of Overjet reduction (I.e. if your teeth stick out by 7mm then 7 months). Patients often call this "Overbite". Anything less than perfect wear can easily double that time though!

Hi Grace, it takes some serious practice but it is possible! Advice depends on the Orthodontist but I always recommend wearing them to eat as the muscles really pull against the jaw during that process and activate the appliance. Many of my patients get to a point where they (temporarily) cannot eat without them! Hey, I got twin blocks and kept sort of clicking them in and out with my tongue constantly. It’s already made them feel looser (I think). Is this going to slow down/stop progress? Do u have any tips on how to stop dislodging them? Thank you :)
Good question! Try not to click them in and out as that can "fatigue" or break the metal clasps and make the twinblocks loose. Mention it to your Orthodontist and they can usually tighten the clasps. 👍
I hope you see this. I have had block braces for a couple months now and will be getting them removed soon. I brush them regularly but the metal at the top somehow looks like it’s getting rusted. Is that normal??
Thanks for the enquiry! I have seen it happen before. Bring it to the attention of your orthodontist. It can sometime also be a calculus buildup on the clasps and Retainer Brite is quite good at getting rid of this. Hope that helps!
Ive got a question. After i finish with my twin block braces will my mouth look like how it was when i was wearing twin block braces. As my lips and face look very weird when i wear twin block braces
That can sometimes happen. We call that overcorrection and it is sometimes done to compensate for any "bounce back" after they are removed. This needs to be closely monitored however.
I am 20 years old and my orthodontist prescribed me twin block as my maloclusion is class 2... it has been a month.. i can see a small difference in my apperence... will it get sucessful or would be a trial and error?
Hi Paul, we normally review patients at 3 months after fit so I would wait until you see the Orthodontist at your first review for advice. Initial changes can be slow but it picks up momentum! Good luck!
Hello, I have normal braces but I also got a removable brace a few months ago. I don’t think it’s a twin block as I only have it on my top teeth and it looks like a retainer but also like a twin block kind of. They said it’s supposed to move my lower jaw forward as I have a really deep over bite but I don’t see how this would work and I don’t really see a difference. Thank you.
There are many options for an overbite, not just twin blocks, but to determine the right one for you, you would need to discuss with your orthodontist. Best of luck!
Thanks for the enquiry! Definitely worth chatting to your Specialist Orthodontist - sometimes they can be modified so that they cover less of the palate which can make some people feel like they want to gag. Hope this helps!
Hi Doctor! I've got twin blocks and i've been wearing them a little bit and they've started becoming loose, does this mean they're working or something? Sometimes when I try to put them on they fall out of my mouth - do you have any tips for that?
Great questions Zainab! You need to book a quick appointment with your orthodontist and ask the metal clasps to be tightened - very quick process. Additionally, be careful you do not click the Twinblocks in and out with your tongue as that makes the clasps lose their grip more quickly. Good luck!
@@itsszainabh Clicking them in and out with the tongue is the main reason but sometimes they just loosen over time as the teeth change. Best ask your Orthodontist!
Thanks for the enquiry Miguel! Although it's possible, Twinblocks are generally reserved for children in the peak growth phase of 11-15. There are other appliances that can be used for the same correction however, worth asking a Specialist Orthodontist!
@@bracebook1965 Hey, thanks for answering. It turns out that the twin block is not exactly what I was looking for. I was looking for a palate expander to reverse my deepbite. Do you have any suggestions(and I know it's not common at my age)?
@@bracebook1965 I'll try more or less to explain my situation dr. I have what you could call Class 2 Division 2 Malocclusion, and also both my upper and lower palates are quite narrow, which is I think the fundamental issue. I cannot rest my tongue correctly at the top and have some issues in my breathing because of the constriction. I wanted to expand the palates, and only then use braces if the malocclusion is still there, and I wanted to know if it's possible at my age.
My almost 9yo is getting this. Because she has a underdeveloped jaw. Is it too young? Im in the US so maybe things are different. She has all her adult back teeth and she'll get braces when she's older. Will her jaw go back to it's old ways when she's older? I don't want to pay for this twice. Thank:)
Although it is unusual, if 9 year olds have developed all their adult teeth (normally happens age 12) and the growth is favourable, I have treated them with twinblocks at that stage. I would recommend asking your Orthodontist if this can be delayed if you have concerns however. Good luck!

Im 14 they told me i need to get it now and braces later
Hi Maryam, if you are unsure there is no problem with asking for a second opinion either within the same practice (with another Specialist Orthodontist) or another practice. A general Dentist might not always be able to comment on these plans (unless they have an interest in Orthodontics) so it is worth considering getting your second opinion from a Specialist Orthodontist.
Good luck!
Any results
Hello, I have normal braces but I also got a removable brace a few months ago. I don’t think it’s a twin block as I only have it on my top teeth and it looks like a retainer but also like a twin block kind of. They said it’s supposed to move my lower jaw forward as I have a really deep over bite but I don’t see how this would work and I don’t really see a difference. Thank you.
Hi Donna, there are many other appliances that have the same mode of action as twinblocks and I will do videos on these one day!
Is there any change
If I have an overbite do I need both the twin blocks with the wore at the front on my top and bottom teeth
There are many options for an overbite, not just twin blocks, but to determine the right one for you, you would need to discuss with your orthodontist. Best of luck!
My twin block makes me feel like gagging. What do I do?
Good luck!
@@bracebook1965 Thank you! Also do you know the reason for why they became loose!
@@itsszainabh Clicking them in and out with the tongue is the main reason but sometimes they just loosen over time as the teeth change. Best ask your Orthodontist!
Hey Dr. Would it be possible to get this if you're 19?
Thanks for the enquiry Miguel! Although it's possible, Twinblocks are generally reserved for children in the peak growth phase of 11-15. There are other appliances that can be used for the same correction however, worth asking a Specialist Orthodontist!
@@bracebook1965 Hey, thanks for answering. It turns out that the twin block is not exactly what I was looking for. I was looking for a palate expander to reverse my deepbite. Do you have any suggestions(and I know it's not common at my age)?
@@afonsohenriques7760 There's a broad variation in palatal expanders. Are you based in the UK Miguel?
@@bracebook1965 No, unfortunately. I'm from Portugal
I wanted to expand the palates, and only then use braces if the malocclusion is still there, and I wanted to know if it's possible at my age.
its ok to wear them 16 hours at day?
I advise my patients 23+h per day but for this the only advice to follow is your Orthodontist's. Hope that helps!
Good luck!
I just got twin blocks and they bottom half doesnt go over ther the top half (they dont go into position no matter how much i push my bottom jaw foward) will I be able to put it into position in a few dats or is there something wrong with my brace?
That is worth asking your Orthodontist. Good luck!
same thing is happening to me, how has it been for you?
Hey plz reply.
Im scared i dont know if it hurts i was supposed to get braces but when i went to a specialist they said i needed to extract two of my teeth and i need to get twin block and after that i needed to get braces. But mine looks like an overbite i just have 12 lower teeth and 14 upper teeth and they want to remove two of my upper second molars, my parents refused so now im going to confirm to another dentist to get their opinion too.
Hope that helps, please subscribe!
@@bracebook1965 np yeah sure! 😊
Hello I just moved from london and I the orhtodontics gave me twin block appliances to wear should I carry on wearing them it's been about 7 months?.
And would I get the permanent braces after this twin block
@@sui9452 Thanks for the enquiry but I'm afraid it's too specific. You need to ask your treating orthodontist those questions as it varies per patient. Best of luck!
My bottom block snapped and I don’t know what to do
Let your orthodontist know asap!
i have these aswell and i have to tighten it oftenly. ive been wearing it for a year but i dont really wear it that often because it makes me have a lisp and i have to go school, i think on the left side i have a crossbite is it any way it can expand within a couple weeks? until the 29th of march from feburuary 26? do you think i still have time for it to expand if i wear it 24hrs
I'm sorry Kay I would have to see and assess you in person to answer this. All the best!
@@bracebook1965 i could text u on insta !
@@kayldx No I mean assess you in person I'm sorry! Best to ask your orthodontist this one!
I got them earlier today, I can talk a little but the pain is overwhelming. It’s 11pm, I should be asleep but I had to take them out as I wont be able to sleep, the pain is only on one side though, and only a certain few teeth are hurting. Could this be a problem with the blocks or will it go away in a few days? I also get lock jaw a lot, the twin blocks have caused it to happen much more often especially when I’m putting them in and I have to move my jaw to fit them in place, will this also stop happening once I have them in for a while?
Worth checking with your Orthodontist and making them aware of the jaw issues. Generally it can be a bumpy start. Good luck and sleep well!
Hi! I got them yesterday and ive been getting very painful front bottom teeth. I had to take them out as soon as i wokr up. Is it normal for them to feel this uncomfortable. Is there anything i can do to ease the pain? I havent been able to wear it full time after getting them, ive only been wearing them for an hour or two at a time.
Hi Lily, discomfort is very normal at the start and it certainly takes some perseverance for the first few days. Worth double checking with your Orthodontist for some advice on how to minimise the pain.
@@bracebook1965 thank you! The pain is already starting to go away now.
@@lilyhutchins9635 Great news! You can do it!
i have to get mine in two weeks :/ how long did you find it hard to talk for? thats what im most worried about for having them
@@islaroguz8139 you will find it the most hard the first week or two but for me at least the lisp doesnt go away it just gets less noticeable :/
Pls dont make a video with suck low volume
Sorry I'll get better!
