Here’s a really good article about Nikon Z range lens for Z cameras. I found it interesting and wanted to share. photographylife.com/best-lenses-nikon-z5-z6-z6-ii/amp
I shot mostly sports with D500 and D7200 as back-up. I already have the Z50, but this year decided to start the migration to the Z. I have just bought a Z5 to start off into FX Z mounts. Starting to play around with it and will definitely invest in lenses. So far it's proven to be compact and shoots quality photos even with the 24-50 kit. Good review and advice. Thanks.
It’s a great camera and I’m sure the more you use it the more you will continue to love it. I have no plans to upgrade anytime soon. Unless Nikon send me one 🤣 (in my dreams) Glad you liked it and check out my lens reviews if you want some advise when you come to look at new lenses! 👍
thanks for sharing this great review I’m also looking into the Z5 I mostly shoot canon, but this time around I’m looking to switch things up this year without breaking the bank this seems like a great option for full camera with dual card slots and image stabilization something my EOS R don’t have.
I’m glad you enjoyed the review. I really rate my Z5 and paired with a decent lens, you get a great camera. I did consider the Z6ii but you didn’t get much more for your money and the Z7ii would be the better upgrade but it’s a lot more money. Good luck with your decision and let us know what you decide on.
Similar party to me. Glad you’re enjoying the Z5 I still love mine. Some of my friends who have Sonys are always impressed with the colour the Z5 is managed to capture
With the latest updates to the Z5, and if you keep your expectations reasonable for this camera (it's basically a $1000 FF camera) it can be a great primary or backup camera. Obviously it's weak points are video (4k specifically) and action photography (as it relates mostly to burst shooting) but beyond that it's a very capable, and surprisingly good camera for the money. Although with the Z6 II permanently being on sale, I would still recommend if someone can spare the extra $200-$300, to get that instead, but if they can't, the Z5 is still worth buying now 4 years later. I know quite a few people who have a Z8 or Z9, but also a Z5 as a backup/travel camera. I think a lot of the "hate" this camera got was because it didn't have a BSI sensor (which really isn't that relevant until yo uget to the really high ISOs like ISO 6400 and higher, and in extremely dark conditions where the Z5 may still struggle to lock focus), and it's 4k video limitations (the hefty 1.7x crop). But when this guy goes on sale for $999, it's a heck of a deal - -a lot of camera for not a lot of money.
I agree, still really good value for money. The z6iii is a great alternative if you want more fps. As the z5 isn’t the best, but I don’t often shoot things moving fast enough to worry about it. I’ve had a lot of people say they prefer the Z5 over their z8, mainly due to size and weight.
Z5 is a balance camera in nikon , i think the weight and size are great , i hope the specs of Z5ii likes ZF and add CF express im not a big fan of z6iii look and the weight compare to sony mirrorless camera is a bit heavy i using ZF , the control is great but no grip feels painful when you hold it longer and I own a Z8 ,it is too heavy for daily use i hope nikon will make the camera in this way and also don’t lost their good quality
You probably figured this out by now, but you can turn off the auto switching from evf and lcd with the button on the side of the viewfinder. No menu diving needed.
Thanks for a great review on Z5. I own a Z5 with the kit lens which has done well on very basic house exterior realty shots as sample shots. It is sharp. The kit lens is better than most other kit lenses. I am looking at either the Z 24-120mm f4 lens or the Z 24-200mm as my next Z lens, so thanks for showing those. I also agree the video on this camera is beautiful, especially in good light or moderate light. (higher quality video than Z30 with less noise in low light and crisp video. Although I might trade up at some point for a Z6ii, I don't think I need to yet, as this camera does mostly what I want it to, and is a great choice for early users to mirrorless. It also has IBIS stabilization and the new firmware 1.4 from Nikon's website adds the eye detect to wide area box mode focus which is good for portraits. Cheers!
I’m so glad you found the video helpful. I have both the 24-120 & 24-200mm lenses and both are great. I’m going to do a review on them, just trying to find the best way to demonstrate the differences. I’m loving the 24-120mm f4 at the moment. I hope to upgrade to the Z7 ii at some point. But like you say, I really don’t need it right now.
@@johnwphotography I would guess the 24-120mm f4 with constant f4 might be more desirable for low light video users and still has 5x reach for fast focusing and zooming. However, I only have a FX 24-120mm f4 with my older D750 to judge by, it locks focus faster than my other Nikon FX lens 28-300mm. I have been doing photography for over 10 years. I may want a longer native Z lens so debating which one. As you have the both Z lenses you could judge how quickly the lenses zoom and the speed to acquire focus, plus low light advantages. I used to do a lot of receptions for weddings and liked how fast the focusing and zooming of the Nikon FX 24-120mm f4 was compared to Nikon FX 28-300mm which I used more at the church for long reach when activity was not fast at the church vs. capturing fast moving dancing at the hall for quick action captures.
Based on your use case it sounds like that 24-120mm would be the better lens for you. I find it’s quicker to focus and much sharper in the edges. I don’t use it for portraits often but will hope to for the odd wedding in the future. Maybe I can do a video taking some photos of my dog with both to help you judge. I just say the S lens line is top quality.
Well worth considering as the price has come down a lot. I love it with the 24-120mm. It feels like the perfect combination. Unless you have a bit more cash and can stretch to a Z7 II. I’m so happy with the Z5 I’m not planning on upgrading anytime soon
@@johnwphotography it’s a steep learning curve with the Z8. To be fair, it’s a big jump even from the Z5/D300/D700/D800 that I also use and the features are phenomenal! If I had the chance again I would have gone D850 which might suit my style better.
Great camera for its price range, I own one along with my ZF..but how I wished it was at least 1 or 2 fps faster 😢 which I believe it is do-able, it's just this marketing greed where they need to "cap" a lower tier model in order to entice you into buying the higher end model.
Ooo.. I do like that ZF! I agree, I wish the fps was higher. Thankfully I don’t do many portraits or wildlife but when I do, I wish for a few extra fps! The Z6iii looks incredible
@@johnwphotography I have hated the Z8 from day one. But am stuck with it! It’s silent and am used to the confirmation of a shot and the clunk of the mirror. The Z5 is not as techy and still has the shutter. The Z8 has so much tech stuff and I feel it’s taken the enjoyment out of photography, for me anyway.
Oh no that’s a shame. Yeah I can see why too much technology can remove the enjoyment factor. Maybe the Z6 iii would be a better alternative for your z8? I can’t decide between an upgrade to the Z7 ii or Z6 iii
@@johnwphotography yes, I come from the D300,700 and 800. They hype the mirror less cams get is too much, I no longer believe any of it. The Z8 is an overrated mediocre over priced camera, in my opinion😂
