Shimoda action x50 v2 - will all my gear fit?
Hi John, some nice images there, really like the fully edited fine art style images very minimal. This location is great for that although a fair bit of post processing to remove the background distractions. Shot this location myself a few years ago now so i know its a tricky place to shoot really. Do they still allow free parking at Osea caravan site out the front or has that now gone pay and display ?
Hi Lee, thank you! Me too, it was the second time trying to do an edit like that, I fine lots of people over edit it. I wanted to something less simple. You have to pay now and I think it was £2 for 2hrs so n it too bad. I love your channel btw and I have been a following for some time now, keep up the great videos!
@johnwphotography thanks John appreciate that, I don't get out as much as I would like so my videos are getting few and far between at the moment. £2 not bad really, when I was there it was free , not many places to park along there if I remember .
I just bought a Zf and I love it. Now I’m saving to get a Z5 as a tiny backup. Looks like a good camera, and GREAT for the price!
I have the 24 to 200 mm len coming from Nikon. I am getting the Nikon Z8 as well. I am looking forward to being able to shoot with a flagship camera. People bought my wildlife and nature photography when I used an old nikon camera (but it stopped working). So, the Z8 is going to be awesome
That exciting, a few other followers have bought that lens for the z8 and have said it’s great. Out of interest did you consider the 24-400mm version of doing more wildlife photography? I personally haven’t tried it, but specs wise it looks very similar
@johnwphotography Oh, I thought about it. But, I only had enough for that one. When I am more established in my career. I plan to get that
Review review. I think one of the most interesting thing about the Z lenses is how clear they are and clean in the color. There’s a clarity to the images compared to the previous G lenses or any other manufacturer. Yes maybe this lens corner sharpness isn’t perfect, but when you look at the pictures that one take with it, it’s just gorgeous. Even at the smaller aperture on the telephoto end it still delivers beautiful images with pretty bokeh.
I agree the image quality is top tier on all their lenses. The sharpened can be lost at certain focal lengths and apertures but for an all rounder lens I think it’s petty perfect. Although I must save I love the 24-120mm more!
Thanks :)
You’re welcome!
Hi interesting video, I took a look as I knew the place from when I lived at South Woodham Ferrers over 40 years ago. At that time I was interested in photography but funds were to put it mildly very tight so the occasional roll of slide film was my limit. But who knows a trip down memory lane, with a decent set of photography gear on my next UK visit.
Thanks for the comment and I’m glad you liked the video and it brought back some memories for you. You should try and get back there if you can. Just make sure to time it at high tide and you will hopefully get some cracking photos.
Hi! You took some amazing photos there, and looks like a great place too, especially for such photos. So my 24-200 lens and the Z5 arrived today. But I'm still at the workplace for about 4 hours, imagine that😂😂Can't wait to get home!!!
Hi and thank you for the video! I believe it's a great lens. I just ordered it together with the Nikon Z 5 camera. Can't wait to test them. It's my first time with a mirrorless camera, I was using DSLR till now. I hope I've made a good decision with this combo.
Great choice, you won’t regret it and let me know once you have it!
@@johnwphotography I will. Should arrive this week. Didn't had time to see your work more but I've subscribed to your channel and will do that in the future. Much health with respect!
@@johnwphotography Hi! So I just got the new Z5 and the lens and they are amazing, much better quality in images than my old D5600. I only managed to make few basic settings and take about 20 photos, I am so busy, 9 hours at the workplace and at home also had other stuff to take care of. But hopefully I will manage to proper test them this weekend.
@@radupetrupeticawell this is exciting. Glad you’re enjoying it so far. I know work can get in the way, I have the same issue. I can’t wait to see your photos. Feel free to share them with me on Instagram. I would love to see them! 📸 happy snapping!
@@johnwphotography Ok. I will look you up on Instagram. I am just disappointed because Instagram takes too much from the quality. Maybe there is a "trick" which I don't know about for images to be shown at better quality. It's such a pitty because the photos have amazing quality on my PC but when posted on Instagram or Facebook lose too much quality.
I’ve done a similar test between the 24-120 and 24-200 since I own both and always struggle as to which to take on trips and I come down to the 24-120 because it is a bit faster.
Yeah, it’s my go to. I’ve just sold my 24-200mm as it was just sitting there I never used it. Great for hiking but i find 120mm is normally long enough.
Nice comparison video of three fine lenses. My main reason for commenting is your thought of "Did I make a mistake by getting the Nikon Z 70-200mm f2.8 vs the Nikon Z 100-400mm f4.5-5.3?" In fact I own all 3 lenses in the comparison, but also own the Z 100-400mm. From my perspective, it gets down to use-case. Like you, I love the Nikon Z 24-120mm f4 and it always seems to be on either my Z8 or Z9. But, I take thousands of movement photos in poor light where I'm not allowed to use flash (indoor dog competitions, often under lousy florescent lighting). For me, the 70-200mm f2.8 is critical for those shots, while the Z 100-400mm requires a higher ISO as I need to keep the shutter speed fairly high. Having said that, the Z 100-400mm is a wonderful lens. I know you did this video prior to the release of the Nikon Z 28-400mm f4-8, but personally, I'm thinking about trading my Z 24-200mm f4-6.3 for the newer lens as it's used primarily for hiking and travel.
Thank you for the comment and glad you liked the video. That’s really good insights, thanks for sharing. I really do fancy the 100-400mm. Since making this video I’ve been using the 70-200mm a lot more and it’s an outstanding lens. Paired with the 24-120 and it’s the ultimate combo.
With the latest updates to the Z5, and if you keep your expectations reasonable for this camera (it's basically a $1000 FF camera) it can be a great primary or backup camera. Obviously it's weak points are video (4k specifically) and action photography (as it relates mostly to burst shooting) but beyond that it's a very capable, and surprisingly good camera for the money. Although with the Z6 II permanently being on sale, I would still recommend if someone can spare the extra $200-$300, to get that instead, but if they can't, the Z5 is still worth buying now 4 years later. I know quite a few people who have a Z8 or Z9, but also a Z5 as a backup/travel camera. I think a lot of the "hate" this camera got was because it didn't have a BSI sensor (which really isn't that relevant until yo uget to the really high ISOs like ISO 6400 and higher, and in extremely dark conditions where the Z5 may still struggle to lock focus), and it's 4k video limitations (the hefty 1.7x crop). But when this guy goes on sale for $999, it's a heck of a deal - -a lot of camera for not a lot of money.
I agree, still really good value for money. The z6iii is a great alternative if you want more fps. As the z5 isn’t the best, but I don’t often shoot things moving fast enough to worry about it. I’ve had a lot of people say they prefer the Z5 over their z8, mainly due to size and weight.
Z5 is a balance camera in nikon , i think the weight and size are great , i hope the specs of Z5ii likes ZF and add CF express im not a big fan of z6iii look and the weight compare to sony mirrorless camera is a bit heavy i using ZF , the control is great but no grip feels painful when you hold it longer and I own a Z8 ,it is too heavy for daily use i hope nikon will make the camera in this way and also don’t lost their good quality
Thanks for the video on this lens and the images as examples of what can be achieved. I am about to buy it.
You’re welcome and glad you enjoyed. 6 months on and I still love this lens. It’s my go to for everything now, I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
Jaw dropping opening scene
It was incredible! Thank you so much! ☺️
I went with x70 and I barely squeezed by on your infamous Ryanair My bag fills up with black magic cinema rig And two days of clothes
I use this lens on my Z7ii ...i had to sell all my Z f4.0 lenses and F mount 2.8 lenses because of my bad knees and just couldn't carry the weight any more but i'm more than happy with the 24-200mm
Never been on a cruise but looking at that ship I can see the attraction, looks amazing.
It’s certain it a different type of holiday. I love it for all the photography options and the food!
The Nikon 70-200mm F.4 G ED VR2 Internal zoom. beats all 3 of those others.
I keep looking at this lens, but I already have 24-200, so I am trying to justify. Great video!
I love this lens! It barely leaves my camera. If you do decide to upgrade you will notice a different. What camera body do you have?
@@johnwphotography ZF and Z8
Super video. I spy me there. Great to meet you all.
Haha, yeah you got featured! Great to me you too, I just watched your latest video of Tollbury. Great work 👏
@@johnwphotography Thank you John, just a collection of my fav clips while out.
Brilliant! Looking forward to a visit if my own soon
We will go again soon! 🤞
Great camera for its price range, I own one along with my ZF..but how I wished it was at least 1 or 2 fps faster 😢 which I believe it is do-able, it's just this marketing greed where they need to "cap" a lower tier model in order to entice you into buying the higher end model.
Ooo.. I do like that ZF! I agree, I wish the fps was higher. Thankfully I don’t do many portraits or wildlife but when I do, I wish for a few extra fps! The Z6iii looks incredible
I prefer mine to the Z8
Lots of people have been saying that. What makes you prefer the Z5, is it the weight?
@@johnwphotography I have hated the Z8 from day one. But am stuck with it! It’s silent and am used to the confirmation of a shot and the clunk of the mirror. The Z5 is not as techy and still has the shutter. The Z8 has so much tech stuff and I feel it’s taken the enjoyment out of photography, for me anyway.
Oh no that’s a shame. Yeah I can see why too much technology can remove the enjoyment factor. Maybe the Z6 iii would be a better alternative for your z8? I can’t decide between an upgrade to the Z7 ii or Z6 iii
@@johnwphotography yes, I come from the D300,700 and 800. They hype the mirror less cams get is too much, I no longer believe any of it. The Z8 is an overrated mediocre over priced camera, in my opinion😂
John - I know your camera has internal stabilization, but 1/50 of a second when we see your camera waving around seems a bit much.
What’s wrong with shooting handheld at 1/50 of a second? As long as you keep your shutter speed to the same as your focal length you are pretty much safe, ideally if you could double it then even better. Secondly, it’s really hard to film and take photos at the same time, I do it to help the people understand the framing and thought process behind an imagine. I often take another picture afterward using both hands to reduce movement. I’m not sure what point you’re trying to make with your comment here?
When you are in a less defensive mood, think about what your video presents to the viewer.
Great video John, It was nice to meet you this morning with your fellow togs in Pinmill. I did find my way to Orford castle and then i went on to Framlingham castle also. lots of images to go through now. : )
Thanks Sacha, great to meet you today. Sounds like you had a great morning and I’m looking forward to seeing the images you’ve captured! Happy editing!
There's no noticeable difference between them and for landscapes. If I wanted a faster lens than the 24-200 I'd get a 2.8 zoom or a prime. My only real issue with the 24-200 is 200 can occasionally be a bit short.
Nice video, cool shots, love the barn in the foreground.
Thank you Richard, much appreciated. Glad you enjoyed it
Great video John, your star trails turned out really good. Lets hope for some more clear nights
Thanks Jeff, I hope so too! 🤞
I love it better than my Z8
Ooo investing, how comes? Is it the better weight?
@@johnwphotography it’s a steep learning curve with the Z8. To be fair, it’s a big jump even from the Z5/D300/D700/D800 that I also use and the features are phenomenal! If I had the chance again I would have gone D850 which might suit my style better.
You probably figured this out by now, but you can turn off the auto switching from evf and lcd with the button on the side of the viewfinder. No menu diving needed.
Thanks Joel, I have but I’m sure your comment will be appreciated by those watching the video and are wondering how to. So thank you!
great video man
Thanks Tom ☺️
Hi John, have you ever had issues with any airline due to the size of the bag? Cheers!
Hi Dano, I’ve only flown with it once so far and no issues. But I must say the bag didn’t have much stuff in (the top section was fairly empty) so it was a lot smaller and it wasn’t. Budget airline. Great for protecting the camera gear. I’ve seen lots of other people travel with these bags so you should be safe to fly
@@johnwphotography Great!! Much appreciated for your prompt response, this was my main concern but all clarified thanks to you!
hey John.... good video but just a question... I just ordered that too, but where can I get that "softbox" that you put above the ICU medium? thanks
Hi Swashy, thank you and I’m glad you liked the video. You will love the bag!! This is the addition insert I got from Amazon. amzn.eu/d/aRdxNWc
My 1st DSLR was D3300, later i got Z5. Still use both. Z5 is awesome.
Similar party to me. Glad you’re enjoying the Z5 I still love mine. Some of my friends who have Sonys are always impressed with the colour the Z5 is managed to capture
Have been wondering if there would be a benefit to this lens over the 24-200 on a Z5 but these videos have sold me, I'll rent one first to see if the reach is enough
I’m glad I was able to help. I love the 24-120 and I think it’s the perfect lens for the Z5! Happy shooting
What amazes me is that the Nikon D750 sensor is still going strong in the Z5 in 2024.
Yeah it’s incredible. I’m still very happy with my Z5
Brilliant video John, your enthusiasm for each shot was amazing to hear. Looking forward to more.
Thanks Jeff and I’m glad that come across. It was fun to photograph, I need to find a better place for the video camera
Top video! Really makes me want to go back to Wales.
You should, I love it there!
Great video John, the colours in the sky at the pier were beautiful and the final image down low was incredible.
Thanks Jeff, yeah the sky was incredible. Shame I didn’t have enough time to get a lower down photo of it!
Are you using face tracking?
Yeah I was using face tracking
Good video . Thank you for sharing your experience. When you record 4k video so how about Dji pocket 3 is hot or not
Thank you, i didn't find it to be hot at all, i think it prefers really well. I think if i was using it for a few hours on a hot day it would do but so far no performance issues i can see. (Apart from it misting up on very cold mornings)
That's not sensor dust - it has aperture-shaped edges, and is light coloured, not dark. It's rain on the lens.
Hi John, printing is the final piece of the jigsaw really, if you don't print your best images, you're missing out and you'd be surprised at how many amatuer photographers don't print. I have my own printer but it's bloody expensive on the inks, but still worth it. Enjoyed the video mate, take care.
Thanks Steve, I'm glad you enjoyed it. I agree printing is such a huge part and i want to try and encourage others to do more of it as it's such a great feeling and really helps you grow as a photographer.
The Great Orme at Llandudno and the Pier still looks fantastic! A lifetime ago, my Father bought me a Philips cassette recorder, which came with a leather case and a handheld microphone and after my major medical operation, I somehow walked the Great Orme with him and recorded the sounds of seagulls. This event and recording have just been brought back alive, over fifty years later, by your rather marvelous video. I bet you didn't expect that kind of resonance! Keep up your great new work, take your wife out for dinner, be brave and show her this video. 😇
What a lovely comment to wake up to. I’m glad it brought back good memories and if you want more nostalgia check out my wales part 1 video as the second half of the video is all around the Llandudno area. Don’t worry, she’s watched it and enjoyed a good dinner 🍝
Great video John, but now I want a drone 😂
Haha, they're great fun!! I will let you borrow mine.
The shots at 200mm 0.6s have obvious--OBVIOUS--camera shake.
OP3' Normal Mode has the best true color video. All the graded video are fake colors.
Normal mode is certainly very good and I think it’s perfect for most people and they wouldn’t be able to tell the difference. Not sure about “all greatest videos are fake colours” part though. D-log M format is a fake log format as it’s basically just D-log rec.709 format. It helps allow for good retention of the shadows and highlights and offers a flat colour profile. Some LUTs can over saturate the colours in videos, but this is something you can turn down or not sure at all and adjust yourself.
@@johnwphotography "OP3 GRADE VIDEO" IS NOT GREATEST VIDEO.
Hi mate , liked the way you talked through the first couple of images and your thoughts on why you thought they didnt work or what could of been better, think this is great to include in a vlog , so many times you see images and think it was a quick two min snap done , gives the impression Landscape photography is easy and requires no real thought or skill, which is the complete opposite in reality. Love the image at 3:30 what a fantastic looking landscape that is. Some nice drone footage, really enjoyed that mate :-)
Hi Lee, thank you so much for your comment and kind works. I wish landscape photography was that easy 😅 and glad you liked hearing my through process and approach. I really want to do more content like this. I love that image as well, the more you look at it the more tiny details you see.
Great demo, I’ve just brought one but finding it jumps in and out of focus when filming close up. Any ideas? Just subbed👍
Try using single point instead of continuous focus sure that will help

Good suggestion, thank you Lee. You beat me to it! 💙
