Canonically, by word of ZUN, Letty actually is powerful enough that she'd be worthy of a final boss position in a game. She just can't be arsed to start some big incident.

There's an in-lore reason for why they don't shoot walls, people are too damn OP and so the spellcard rules were made to keep the world from collapsing in on itself from people like "Suika "Can casually make black holes" Ibuki" or "Reimu "extradimensional being" Hakurei", so rules to make fights fair were made, which includes putting flaws in your attacks.

I absolutely disagree with the sentiment that Touhou 13 is easy for newcomers. It’s only easy when you understand how to use spirit trance to your advantage. The bullet patterns may be easier but that means nothing if the player is starved for resources. Because not knowing how to play right means they’ll barely get any extra lives.
That's actually a point I brought up to him but I just decided to cut out of the video. By easy I meant the patterns are easy to dodge. I didn't really take the resources into THAT much consideration since I was letting him use continues anyway and wanted to see how he'd do against the less dense patterns of TD.
I think 14 or 7 is the easiest for newcomers. (14 if the person was told of how point of collection works). 14 gives you a cartoonish amount of resources if you know your pathing while 7 is much more simplified with gaining lives based on points. There’s also the supernatural border that can really come in clutch for newbies.

Continue system is a carry over from arcade games yes, except being bad does not cause your wallet to fucking die. I believe a lot of the character names are ones aren't common nowadays, even the Japanese ones (Sanae is one of the few exceptions). Like fuck, Tewi is so old that modern people would spell her name Tei (though both spellings are pronounced the same). Chen and the Yakumo gang are named after Chinese words for colors (Chen is orange, Ran is indigo and Yukari is purple), so there's a theme here at least. In older games you can only rebind if you have a joystick... or via some external executable that I don't remember the name of. On not shooting, remember that midboss overwrites enemy waves as long it's alive; sometimes stalling out the midboss attacks is easier than the enemy waves that would show up in their place. About the Touhou lore... it wasn't really that estabilished at the time of PCB. Like if I really remember right, Reimu has no idea who the fuck Yukari is in PCB's Phantasm stage, even though she should. Or how in the backstory to EoSD, the barrier that separates Gensokyo does not exist, the mist just casually goes towards the outside world. Good ol' early installment weirdness. -Oh yeah also PC98 seems to have been more important I guess, given some of the backstory comments.- Things only really kicked up around like... PoFV/MoF? Anyway, in the wise words of Mystic Square player evaluation screen... "Start being serious Use bombs to survive"
