I think something else of note in the scene. When Rodey and Sam are arguing, they are over Steve's shoulder. Like an internal argument. Also, everyone is talking about it, but Steve is actually reading it. The rest wouldn't have had time to read it, they are just talking about the idea of it, while Steve wants to know what it actually says.

Spot on dude. The current state of Marvel is so depressingly, unbelievably awful and downright insulting I often forget why I was once so invested in the MCU. This has certainly reminded me of where that passion came from. Despite its definite flaws, many of which were hard to ignore, it was an overall achievement in storytelling to have such a long-running franchise reach the heights that the MCU did in its prime. A decade of movies telling their own stories, but throughout weaving a tight net of core characters and setting up an intense conflict to push each of those characters and their bonds to their absolute limits. Far from perfect, but the through lines of these characters were so well written, developed, and realized through Infinity War. It was a genuine cinematic achievement. Far more than mere blockbuster action flicks with heroes flying around in capes that I fear they'll be remembered as. So sad to see the past two phases of the MCU systematically destroy everything that came before. So many talented creatives' work coming together over the course of a decade only to be desecrated by untalented, passionless writers and directors that seem to always fail upwards. At least we'll always have movies like Civil War to remember fondly. I just wish that the legacy of MCU will be remembered for its true achievements, and not for being corporate sludge.
How have you not appeared on a show with MauLer yet? Not sure if you're aware of him or his podcast, EFAP, but I think you'd have some great conversations with him and the other hosts. You all clearly share a great passion for both writing and properties such as the MCU. A lot of your conclusions on particular films and the current state of media and popular IPs seem quite congruous. Idk if guesting on other creators' shows is something you do or are open to, but it would be a real treat to see you guys have a conversation on EFAP or something one day.

"Civil War" is one of the main reasons why my faith in the MCU had started going down the tubes.

@juanitajones6900 Unfortunately, a strangely popular take that I've never understood. Do you have any good arguments for why that is? The plot or the villains are usually the weakest part of older MCU movies, but even those are on point for the most part in Civil War. The character writing is pretty excellent across the board. Everyone's actions and motivations are very much in line with how their characters were built up over the years. I also find both sides of the conflict to have very compelling arguments and aren't unjustified in either direction. They all just make sense and I believe them completely. The damage dealt to the Avengers' friendship and trust by the "war" between them sets them up nicely for the conflict with Thanos. Sadly, Endgame thought it best to immediately wrap up all that tension with a few lines of dialogue.

What you said about Black Panther and Spider-Man. Them being done better here than in their own film is 1000 percent correct.

Natasha is probably my favourite character in Civil War. Her apparent switching sides is not that at all. She's shown that she's not at all an idealist like Steve, and not quite the utilitarian that Tony appears to be. She's a realist. She observes and makes the most logical decision at any given time. If her morals appear to change, it's because the situation changes, and if Nat is one thing, she's adaptable. That doesn't make her flakey or devoid of a moral compass, nor does it make anyone wrong or right. They're just different ways to look at the world, all with their advantages and their flaws. Civil War is a difficult movie for me to like, it requires me to dig a little deeper than is comfortable, it takes me to an uneasy place and makes me interrogate my own philosophy. Very nice video!

It sucks that watching through this scene showing all of these amazing and well written characters reminds you that in Phase 4, they completely ruin and destroy every single one of them in completely asinie and disrespectful ways through nothing other than abysmal writing.

If this were a real thing, I'd pay good money to watch a penny-ante government bureaucrat like Ross tell a literal Aesir God with a mystical hammer that's more than capable of turning mere mortals like Ross to mush that he owns him.
Best case, Thor would tell Ross to kiss his ass and then piss off back to Asgard, leaving the mortals to fend for themselves.
Worst case, well, Ross would be Mjolnir Ketchup and the UN wouldn't be able to do fuck-all about it.

not really what the movie is about, it focuses heavily on the lengths comrades will go to hurt one another when their ideals are threatened, and how meaningless those ideas are in the end

He had agency, drive and charisma. He contributed to the plot in meaningful ways, on his own terms, and had an entire arc even though he barely had 5 minutes of screentime.
In Black Panther he plays second fiddle to Shuri, Okoye and Killmonger while having no compelling motivations besides defending his title. He's far less interesting and introspective.
But that is a topic that deserves its own video.

I personally never cared for this film. Not that it's bad but just overrated. Everyone behaves like their most unlikable self and the Accords seemed like just a contrivance to make them fight each other. (again)
I've always thought that there was no real dilemma in it because everyone is right and wrong in their own way and the only real conflict in it was with Black Panther wanting revenge, which even that was resolved way too quick because all he had to do was eavesdrop on a conversation to realize the error of his ways.

hard disagree on the accords feeling contrived, I thought it was a great conclusion to the trilogy and logical follow up to both age of ultron and winter soldier
