You saved me a lot of $$$ on a shop PCV replacement, and I learned a lot. Thanks so much.
0:42 The coolant warms the PCV so that moisture in the gases does not freeze in the winter and damage the engine. On other engines, when moisture freezes in the PCV, it stops the pressure increase and oil starts to run from all the connections and seals. This will happen due to short trips in the winter.
I broke that secondary air line next to the water pipe…. I recommend being extremely cautious when moving the brittle plastic not flexy air pipe. Not cheap and you run risking breaking the new air pipe when installing it… Charles, your videos are priceless and have bailed me out more than a couple of times sir. It's funny... I don't own or Will never own this car as its not so thing I'd be drawn too... But because its you showing how its done I stay engaged the whole way through... A good sign or a great teacher.... Aside the fact I love all your mk4 golf related content as that's where my love of Vws are at.
I used to make those PVC valves. They are made from a material (I think) called zytel. It's a fiberglass reinforced nylon. It's a pretty kickass plastic, but that engine is about 100k past it heat cycle life.
If that one was the ORIGINAL one, id say we did pretty good. This is a pretty common issue on these 3.0t engines. I just wish there was a better way to test them.
@@HumbleMechanic A better way? I remember pulling my pcv valves on gm products by pulling them by hand from the valve cover and giving them a shake . If they rattled they were ok. If not, you could clean them with solvent and try again. A 3 dollar item in the 70s and 80s. German technology is increasingly retarded.
I like these random repairs. I own a mk7 GTI and this video is almost not relevant to me, i still find these entertaining and informative. Keep up the high quality vids my man

Solid German engineering created this very complex mix of components to deal with. Pictures and videos and I would still mess this up! Thanks Doc Charles for posting these interesting and informative videos.
Honestly you make the best videos for working on cars I have seen... And that is quite a few too many. Most are stupid beyond measure who wants to see how to video that starts with a shot of the new part cut straight to already put on with nothing showed the they say that's how you do it.. wtf. Your dialogue start to finish with professional insight should be the benchmark for the way these videos should go. So thank you well done. I feel like I actually learned stuff every video I have watched.
Thank you for this video I have a b8.5 and I do minor engine work myself and this is gonna be the first time I’m pretty much pulling the supercharger out to do my pcv thank you for that , earned another subscriber!
My biggest mistake was doing a clutch on my s2000, getting the tranny back on and realizing that I didn't put the clutch fork in. I literally teared up lmao. TY for the video, if mine fails in the future I will reference this for sure.
Everyone in the groups complaints about the one bolt holding the coolant pipe by the knock sensor harness, but I learned from you long ago and bought VIM Half Cut bit set and It was a breeeze for me. 🎉
@@mk_ultrarunner VIM tools VHC77 77piece half cut stubby bit set. Works great for tight spaces like the coolant pipe bolt on the 3.0t and valve cover bolts that are closest to shock towers.
Don't kid yourself most new cars are all plastic under the hood and have issues. Toyota is having issues right now to with turbo failures and trans issues ontop of other issues. All in the pursuit of less weight and better MPG's. Even Scotty Kilmer doesn't care much for the newer Toyota cars vs his Celica🤣
i ended up dropping that T30 screw on reinstall, took me hours to find it with a mirror, it actually ended up wedged between the power steering rack. was happy when i found it. put some towels underneath when removing or reinstalling in case you drop it
at 39:37 you mentioned the 3 hose's that are source vacuum and at 39:44 you mentioned the hose going to the runners. If you were going to diagnose a leak for bank 2 (drivers side), for dtc p200b. Would you use one of these to check and see if it holds vacuum. Or how would you diagnose the problem? Nice walk through. What I like to do, besides pics, is keeping a set of color markers, so I draw a line, and sometimes a symbol on the parts. Like the long bolt on the manifold, mark pink the bolt head and around the manifold hole. Not only prevent mistakes, but speeds up. I also write a number on parts(hoses, connectors, etc.) then follow the numbers in reverse when assembling. OCD much?!😅
Love that you showed the wiring harness mistake, I was cracking up as I made the same exact mistake last time I replace a customers PCV valve. There are two TSB’s from Audi, one only shows replacing the diaphragm, I like you showed replacing the whole valve since more and more of these are having the coolant mix with oil. The other TSB talks about fuel additives degrading the 90 degree vacuum line fitting at the PCV. Next time you do this job I’d recommended replacing the elbow to prevent future failure.
I was replacing the valve cover gaskets and broke the breather hose... So here we are! Pro Tip: cut off a piece of baling wire (the stiff wire that holds its form) and wrap it 90-99% around the plastic hose port on the Valve Cover. Don't overlap it, a small gap is what you want. Use a pic or flat-blade screwdriver and push it up and under the 4 retainer sections of the breather hose clip and it will pop right out. The idea is that you are releasing all 4 of the clip sections at the same time instead of fooling around trying to pry each one out at a time with a pic and having them snap back into place. Don't pull the hose too hard or you will be watching the "How To Remove SC and Replace PCV Valve" videos like I am... The hose ain't cheap either.
A few years back, I did fuel injectors and intake manifold gaskets on my 93 Ford Explorer. Used paper towels to plug intake holes, and forgot to remove them. Got sucked into cylinders. Took myle hours with boroscope to remove it all. Truck runs good!
On Volvo we have the "glove test". We place a glove over the open oil cap if the glove inflates the pcv system is clogged or leaking. You want to always have vacuum drawing from the crankcase.
Yaaay back to Sunday noon(ish) uploads! Loved the heroic music for the supercharger removal. What a crappy place to stick a PCV. I'll never complain about replacing the PCV on an MKV BPY again. OK maybe not never 🤣
Great video. Love how deep you dive into the extra stuff that's a pain in the butt. To be honest though, I think you should've shown how you removed and replaced the secondary fire wall. That is something nobody has covered on these cars and I believe it could be a very critical and helpful tool for PCV, 02 sensors, Rear timing covers, Catalytic converters, Oil Filter Housing, etc... Thanks again for the insightful video, and if you have video of the fire wall please post it.
Hey Charles, your videos has always been a light unto my path as a Volkswagen family cars mechanic in Nigeria We love you ❤️. I just wished I get better opportunities.
Great tips, yesterday I've replaced the pcv because my Autel found a fault code and I had 2 symptoms, the sizzling sound while accelerating and I couldn't remove the oil cap while the motor was running, extremely suction. Replaced it with OEM, and several gaskets and o-rings, no change at all. Do you have an idea of what it might be? And had a manifold code after the replace, so I guess somethings wrong there too, although I hold the flaps open while mounting the manifold.
Probably a dumb question, but I had my car inspected. I see on the labor description, the mechanic recommends PCV Valve replacement with parts in conjunction. Yet I see on the part’s description Engine crankcase vent valve…is that the same thing? It looks like they got a bunch of parts that probably go with it, but not the main component.
I have been able to successfully do everything except separate the two hoses at @17:02. I have used all the leverage I can and it's like they are glued together. I assume I'm tugging at the right parts. Any advice? Great video by the way.
Thanks for the video. I followed it to T, but I have another issue now after changing the PCV valve now I got fuel leak is coming from somewhere in that area where I disconnected the fuel lines on the fuel lines. The one that’s off to the side, do I need a washer
I not a fan of an Audi or VW 😂. But your video very well explanation👍 Last month I did on a 2011 Q7 for my kid and I forgot to adjust the intake flaps then the check engine light came on so I need to remove supercharger out again😢. And the one screw that hold the coolant pipe I dropped it so I had to put a 8mm from Toyota bolt instead and use a long 10mm wrench ratchet that was so easy 😂 Thanks for you sharing video 👍
hi humble thank you for such a great video can you please help me with this if you can i replaced the pcv valve but it still leak in the valley and caused the oil to leak in front of the engine please any suggestions.. i got the pcv valve from the dealer
Excellent video ! This helped me replace a broken coolant pipe (the one that goes to the rear heater) I dropped the clip and can’t get a new one on. Any idea if it will be safe to leave it as is it seems very secure. Again it’s the coolant pipe that goes from the heater to the thermostat

Hey charles how are u, my name is mano and i have audi vw workshop in beirut lebanon, u can pressure the coolant system and open the engine oil cap, if the oil separator(pcv valve) is diffective u will here coolant leaking sound or some wierd sounds from inside the engine and thats how ull know if the pcv valve gasket is worn or pcv valve itself is defective.
Great video! I'll be using this to install the two check valves under the PCV to prevent chain rattle on my 2012 A6. Have you install these before? I wonder if is worth it all this work. I could probably replace the thermostat (was replaced in 2017 by previous owner, still working good) too and cleaned Injectors.. I removed the supercharger before, just fixa coolant leak and flush supercharger fluid and cleaned the supercharger bricks. Thanks!
About to buy an S5 with one of these engines in New Zealand. Full survive history, done 140,000km (86,000 miles) 2011. Last service had a full set of coils and spark plugs, what’s your thoughts on long term reliability and that age/mileage. Had a trans service at 75,000 miles. Will be getting a pre purchase inspection, anything to look out for? Did notice about 1 second of timing chain rattle on start up. But went away quickly. Did have a different rattle that went away after 30 seconds. Any idea what that could be? Appreciate your guys responses!
21:00 “....That’s an engineers decision.” Engineers making decisions like that are the reason I have a raging hate-on for VW products. 😡 I replaced the PCV valve on my 2005 Honda’s K24 engine today.....it took a 19mm deepwell socket, pliers, and less than 1 minute to replace!

Guys please support his Patreon, we need this guy around for years to come 👍
I did the same thing. Make sure you order the correct part. There was a revision to add a sensor at the tee. My car didnt have the sensor and I ordered the wrong part. 06E-131-143AJ without he sensor. 06E-131-143-AK with
im doing this job right now on a customers 13 SQ5. not a terrible job but finding the specs to tighten the hardware was hard to find. your video helllped alot!
Awesome
@@HumbleMechanic VAG Audi engineers are donkeys. Too much plastic with heat in all of their engines since 90's
Aluminum is also a pretty kickass metal. Just saying
@@colchronic this!!!!!!!!!
Keep up the high quality vids my man
I know finally who you are.. You, dear sir , are the little voice in my head, when I do my repairs. :)
That mistake you did NOT cut out is exactly what I was going through today! No matter how many disassembly pics I take, I never take all the ones I needed!
Finally a video showing whats holding the rear of the return pipe. Ive looked everywhere. Thank u
SO GLAD YOU ARE THE FIRST GUY I HAVE SEEN PUT SOME DIETETIC GREASE ON THE O RINGS TO HELP THEM GO ON EASILY WITHOUT TEARING.
It’s a must. Lol
Even though I bought a subaru last yr. Charles I still love your content! So much to learn from you! Keep them coming. I gave my Tiguan 2011 to my niece and she is still going strong over 160k! Doing front suspension this week for her!
Thanks again for saving us a ton of $
Lol I had a 2000 vw just uploaded last year as well, also got a sub. 2020 the year before push button start and button shifter.....
Still have more problems with it than I had with my VW
@@vick10036 THAT WAS A SCAM!!! DO NOT MESSAGE THAT NUMBER
Thank you for the kind words. Glad I can bring some value.
@@HumbleMechanic copy that. Thanks for letting me know
Anyway, you have to spend a bunch of money to keep it running
Thanks man with your video i was able to do my 2014 Q7 PCV myself and saved thousands of dollars
I followed ur video step by step bc it’s my first time ever working on an Audi. The video and explanations were PERFECT!!! I went to school for automotive but I’ve never worked on and Audi and it was a great experience. Just got my wife’s Q7 back up and running today just from watching this video, taking pics and taking my time. I’d love to see you do videos of u working on an 03 Tacoma. If there’s a way to ever contact u if I have questions please let me know. Thanks again for ur time to make this video!!
I've done the timing belt on my MK4 GTI 1.8T three times. I will not be doing this PCV valve myself on my Q5 3.0T! LOL! Great video, showing what I will not be doing.
Solid German engineering created this very complex mix of components to deal with. Pictures and videos and I would still mess this up! Thanks Doc Charles for posting these interesting and informative videos.
👆👆Great fan❤️, thanks for watching You have been selected among my shortlist winner's,Dm on WhatsApp above to acknowledge your prize 🎁🎁
Please explain these bits?
@@mk_ultrarunner VIM tools VHC77 77piece half cut stubby bit set. Works great for tight spaces like the coolant pipe bolt on the 3.0t and valve cover bolts that are closest to shock towers.
@@360construction9thx. I looked them up. “A bit pricey.” 😂 But definitely looks helpful. Thx.
As always a fantastic video 👌 Humble mechanic showing why he's the best by the attention to detail in each and every video
Working with German cars gives you limitless content like this
100% FACTS!!! I never have to worry about "what can if fix today" HAHA
American Cars aren't worth fixing.
Took me 2 days, this video helped tremendous Thank You!!!
You encouraged me
I'm going to start this job next week on my A6 and after that on my Q5
thank you
hey bro, just wanted to say Thanx for coming to our Chattanooga Motorcar Festival!
i ended up dropping that T30 screw on reinstall, took me hours to find it with a mirror, it actually ended up wedged between the power steering rack. was happy when i found it. put some towels underneath when removing or reinstalling in case you drop it
at 39:37 you mentioned the 3 hose's that are source vacuum and at 39:44 you mentioned the hose going to the runners. If you were going to diagnose a leak for bank 2 (drivers side), for dtc p200b. Would you use one of these to check and see if it holds vacuum. Or how would you diagnose the problem?
DTC P200B INTAKE MANIFOLD RUNNER CONTROL OVERTRAVEL
CHECK THE INTAKE FLAP MOTOR (V157)
CHECK THE INTAKE MANIFOLD RUNNER POSITION SENSOR (G336)
Yikes
On Volvo we have the "glove test".
We place a glove over the open oil cap if the glove inflates the pcv system is clogged or leaking. You want to always have vacuum drawing from the crankcase.
Always great detail in your videos. Thank you Charles!
Yaaay back to Sunday noon(ish) uploads! Loved the heroic music for the supercharger removal. What a crappy place to stick a PCV. I'll never complain about replacing the PCV on an MKV BPY again. OK maybe not never 🤣
Great video. Wish it was up 3yrs ago when it took me 6 tries to get everything in right. Big pain in the but!
Thanks for the videos. Doing my PCV and losted the bolt @16:20 anyone know the part # or size. thank you!
Now I am cured from ever buying a VW or Audi V6 engine. Great video mate.
What is the dampers and where you go to find them
Great video.
Hey Charles, your videos has always been a light unto my path as a Volkswagen family cars mechanic in Nigeria
We love you ❤️.
I'm doing exactly what you're done. the funny thing is I made the same mistake as you did. I wish i watched your video before I did my repair
It is a perfect VW fix channel!
Hello Charles, Did you check your email? we are looking for work with you.
We've had this issue on our Audi A6, well PCV valve failure codes. Fortunately no oil and coolant mixing issues.
Don't forget to hold the lower intake manifold flaps open with a hand vacuum pump when reinstalling the lower intakes 🙂
Thanks so much! I did the same thing with my sensor wire. This helped me figure out what I did wrong.
How long did it take you to complete? How long should it take an import shop?
I have been able to successfully do everything except separate the two hoses at @17:02. I have used all the leverage I can and it's like they are glued together. I assume I'm tugging at the right parts. Any advice? Great video by the way.
Just managed to separate them, put a bit of WD40 over it and attacked at an angle for about 10 mins
OMG thats a lot to pull to get a pcv out :(
Thank you though ! very much appreciate your videos !
Only Charles could leave me in suspense of for a Liqui Moly engine flush video - been curious to try it on on my own cars!
Working on the edits now!!
Thanks for the video. I followed it to T, but I have another issue now after changing the PCV valve now I got fuel leak is coming from somewhere in that area where I disconnected the fuel lines on the fuel lines. The one that’s off to the side, do I need a washer
Awesome video, not to help me do the work, but to recognize I don't want to do the work, lol. Appreciate you.
Hey that’s just as valuable in my opinion.
I not a fan of an Audi or VW 😂.
But your video very well explanation👍
Last month I did on a 2011 Q7 for my kid and I forgot to adjust the intake flaps then the check engine light came on so I need to remove supercharger out again😢.
And the one screw that hold the coolant pipe I dropped it so I had to put a 8mm from Toyota bolt instead and use a long 10mm wrench ratchet that was so easy 😂
Thanks for you sharing video 👍
hi humble thank you for such a great video can you please help me with this if you can i replaced the pcv valve but it still leak in the valley and caused the oil to leak in front of the engine please any suggestions.. i got the pcv valve from the dealer
Audi friend here. Put vice grips on the compressor lift loops for easier extraction :)
THAT is a great idea!
Great vid thank you! Especially the warnings about fragile plastic!
Awesome job. You made a tedious task fun.
Excellent video ! This helped me replace a broken coolant pipe (the one that goes to the rear heater) I dropped the clip and can’t get a new one on. Any idea if it will be safe to leave it as is it seems very secure. Again it’s the coolant pipe that goes from the heater to the thermostat
professional video. all praise for the master! master, is it possible to get the code marks of the parts and rubbers that were changed in this clip. I plan to do everything like that on my s4 b8
The dramatic victory theme whilst pulling the supercharger was a nice touch. 🤣😂
😂😂😂
Hey charles how are u, my name is mano and i have audi vw workshop in beirut lebanon, u can pressure the coolant system and open the engine oil cap, if the oil separator(pcv valve) is diffective u will here coolant leaking sound or some wierd sounds from inside the engine and thats how ull know if the pcv valve gasket is worn or pcv valve itself is defective.
Ha! I just did mine last week. Broke the dang coolant pipe for the heater core.
Ouch!
Lifting and reinstall of supercharger is easier if you loop some shop towels on the hooks. Just found that way works for me
Awesome video! Bookmarking this in my SQ5 diy folder.
favorite car of the channel
Did you bleed the coolant on the supercharger bleed screws?
Thanks Charles ! Oh Boy ! As if working on a GTI isn't complicated enough ! I can't wait to get an Audi S ! 😂
Thanks!
Informative video and definitely abit of a hectic engine to work on 😅😅
About to buy an S5 with one of these engines in New Zealand.
Okay, I will never complain about PCV valve changes again after watching this video
21:00 “....That’s an engineers decision.”
Engineers making decisions like that are the reason I have a raging hate-on for VW products. 😡
I replaced the PCV valve on my 2005 Honda’s K24 engine today.....it took a 19mm deepwell socket, pliers, and less than 1 minute to replace!
Can't test something I'll never own though I do most work on my sister's TT which I called dibs on the day she bought it. If anyone knows if there's a steely option for snow tires that'd be great if you could let me know. BTW thanks for your time teaching us as it's saved my sister thousands.
Edit: That's true dedication to us classmates when he stops working to heart comments so fast I missed it.
Notification squad, Have a nice weekend!🔥🔥🔥
WOO!
Using silicone spray to rejuvenate old plastic before touching it: brilliant.
just fixed on this exact problem on a 13 A6. PCV coolant passage was leaking so bad when you pressurized the cooling system it would barf right down into the pan from a passage near the crank snout. My money was on cracked engine block but it was for sure the PCV
You are a rockstar. This is a great video!
I did the exact same thing with that wire at 38:00 lol 😆 i hate how some of the wires use the same harnesses and you can make a mistake

I’m no mechanic by any means but on the reassemble of the injector that he videoed was the green seal sliced? Again not talking crap love the videos super helpful
I was advised not to do the seals on these but to get new injectors because they can get gunked up from the inside, any insight?
dude thank you very much for this video lol this thing kicked my ass but got it done
