  • I glue up one segmented ring and it becomes 5 rings before I am done.
    Just another way to do a bowl from a board.
    I use Maple, Cherry and Burnt Oak AKA Cambia Oak
    I used Minwax Wipe On Poly and Acks Sanding Paste and Polish Restore Paste for the finish.

      Using 2 boards matching the grain will be harder to do. At least with a non segmented board

    I love your videos I’ve learned a lot. Thank you! I have discovered if you line all your pieces up with the glue side up and a shim to keep them level and something to push them against I can just put glue on all of them then grab them one by one and put them together instead of spreading glue one at a time.

    Hi Gary...
    Really beautiful bowl with an amazing finish...
    I would like to see another bowl.. shallow this time.. perhaps without staggering the pattern...
    Instructive video as always...
    Take care my friend...All the best.....Andy

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  Рік тому

      Thank you Andy. I also have thought about not staggering them. Staggering them does make the bowl stronger but I have done these types with only one layer so no stagger on those. But I have an option for making them strong enough.
      Not like it will be used for a Frisbee LOL.... I THINK!
      Take care,
      Gary

      Thank you Don. I have started the design for a shallow bowl. In order to keep it shallow it would have to be just one cut. Each cut will add 3/4 of an inch. But I may consider cutting the thickness down. Hmm you just got me thinking.
      Thanks this just might be the answer.

      Shallow version is been requested and I think I have my final design. I had to change my drawing a few times till I figured out the easy way. Good thing I did it in my CAD program or I would have wore out the eraser on my pencil haha.

    Attempt number 12 ... let's see if this is deleted .....
    I love this type of bowl, I think it's because it's a simple but effective method of making a bowl, not only that but it wastes very little wood, especially if you create it in this way ... it's a beautiful piece 😁

    My first bowl (1975) was a bowl from a board. The rings were cut with a Jig Saw. By your standards the cuts were a mess, but useable. I still have the bowl. It was from a piece of 1 x 12 mahogany. Still looks pretty good. I sure wish I had known of your methods and fixtures back then. It certainly would have been easier. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  Рік тому

      Thank you Glen. My first one was made on my band saw making half rings. Way to much work gluing the halves together so I decided to try this and it works.
      The fixture for catching the ring has become my favorite fixture I have come up with. No doubt someone will copy it and have it for sale. That has happened with other things I have come up with. But it is so easy and cheap to make most of the things I come up with. I am all about saving money when I can.
      Take care,

    It does work. I first I calibrated the table saw blade to exactly 90 degrees. Trued up some scrap. Then added scrape to my table saw miter gauge extending it to 18". Then using an electronic/digital angle finder cut scrap until I got the miter gauge to exactly 67.5 degrees. This produced an 8 piece closed center segmentation....YES it can be done!
    Thanks Gary!

    Segments from a board, clever! Thanks for sharing the jigs. I usually catch the ring with a gloved hand, but it's not for everyone and the backer is an excellent idea, as is the right angle. Quicker than using a square each time.

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  Рік тому

      Thank you Josh. I am sure catching with a gloved hand is working fine for you. Myself I like to keep both hands on the parting tool as they can grab at any moment. So because of that I would not recommend catching the ring to anyone else. But it seems to work for you. Not trying to be the safety police but some people have a thing about gloves and moving objects. I got called out for wearing and apron at the lathe even though I wore one all my working days as a wood patternmaker.

    Great execution Gary. I, too, have been using polyurethane to seal the wood before polishing. I use regular poly from a can, put on with a cloth, it builds faster than the wipe-on. I then polish with a buffing system, ending with carnauba wax.

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  Рік тому

      Thank you Bill, I have used the regular poly but I find the wipe on to be easier to get a very smooth finish. It does take more coats but in this weather it happens pretty fast.
      I do not have a buffing system and I am sure that would help if you were using the regular poly.

    Now, this is closer to my own style of woodworking... by all means, do the next one at a more shallow angle... Every yootoober that demonstrates the "bowl from a board" technique uses the same 45 degree slope. Would be interesting to see something more unique.

    Beautiful bowl and great technique! I use wipe on poly more and more for my pieces. Especially for tight grain harder wood. Shellac works great if you have grain patterns you want to stand out. I prefer poly for tighter grained wood such as dogwood. Dogwood usually does not have a strong grain pattern but does have a beautiful pinkish blush that shellac would hide or change. Poly preserves that beautiful coloring.
    Great job! Love your videos.

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  Рік тому

      Thank you very much. I use finishes for the same reason you do. I use what best fits the wood.
      For a natural turning I tend to like shellac. If I want to keep a glued up piece as natural as I can I use the Polycrylic which is water based poly. The oil based will tint the lighter wood a little.
      Nice that we have all these choices.
