  • This is a Motormouth couple car review of the 2023 Hyundai Tucson HEV or hybrid compact crossover SUV.
This Hyundai Tucson hybrid has a 1.6L turbocharged 4-cylinder hybrid powertrain with a 6-speed automatic transmission and a combined 226 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, standard AWD. With a full tank of gas the Tucson Hybrid gets about 816 km/507 miles of range.
One of the things we like about the Hyundai Tucson hybrid is how comfortable and smooth the ride is, yet the cabin remains quiet whether you are in the city of cruising on the highway.
There are two trims of the Hyundai Tucson hybrid in Canada and three in the US, there’s a lot of value with this hybrid.Standard features in Canada include, a dual 10.25” touchscreen with navigation, 10.25-inch digital driver display, wired Apple Carplay and Android Auto 8-speaker Bose sound system, heated steering wheel, heated front seats, 8-way power driver’s seat, leather seating surfaces, a panoramic sunroof, heated rear seats and a power liftgate.
In the US, there are less features on the base model Hyundai Tucson hybrid but if you move up one trim, you will get many of these features. One feature that comes standard in the US is a wireless charger, that’s only available on the top trim in Canada. An 8” touchscreen is also standard in the US which has wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, something you may prefer. Moving up to the larger touchscreen, you get wired.
The top trim Hyundai Tucson hybrid in both countries, adds extra features like a power passenger seat, driver seat memory, ventilated front seats and a surround view monitor. In the US, the heated steering wheel and Bose Sound system are only available on the top trim. There are definitely some differences between Canada and the US when it comes to trims.
Fuel economy for the Hyundai Tucson hybridis very good but not as good as some of its competitors like the RAV4 Hybrid. The Hyundai Tucson hybrid gets 6.3L/100km, 37 MPG city and 6.6L100km, 36 MPG highway.
In Canada, the Luxury model is $42,756 CAD, Ultimate $45,156 CAD. In the US, Blue $31,350 USD, SEL Convenience $34,310 USD and Limited $39,110 USD.

I've rented Tucsons with the 2.5 ICE from Turo owners twice; that is a very nice car too. Even with the ICE it is quite and got about 33 mpg on the highway.
I bought a 2022 Outback which is also very comfortable. I do appreciate like the longer cargo area in our Outback But at times, I get buyers remorse & think I should have waited for the Tucson or Sportage hybrid despite the $5,000 higher cost for similar trims.
I put a dongle in my Outback for wireless CarPlay. Wireless is nice for short trips, but if using the phone for navigation the battery depletes rapidly making a cord necessary for all day travel.

infotainment screen being tilted towards the driver is such a useful and yet underrated feature in a car. I remember my 2013 Civic EX got similar tilted screen toward the driver and I loved it. Ergonomically more enjoyable and in many angles with the sun it helped the avoid the glare when seeing on the screen.

I’ve had my Tucson Ultimate Hybrid for about 3 weeks now - in white, so it looks like Andrea’s Mom’s car. Love the quiet ride, the backseat space and the pano roof. SmartPark has been fantastic - I can actually get the car into my tiny garage! Infotainment is very usable - especially the steering wheel controls. I’m finding it hard to get the driver’s seat in a comfortable position - any tips or tricks?

My 2022 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid Limited was plagued with powertrain problems and the dealer couldn't fix them forcing Hyundai to do a lemon buyback. The two dealers I used for repairs said they see the gas Tucson, Hybrid Tucson, and the Santa Cruz in all the time for the same issues. Transmission, oil consumption, engine stalling, evap leaks are very common on these vehicles with these similar power trains.

@@matsudakodo I really did like the car, I worked for the dealer for several months as they tried different fixes on my particular Tucson. I so hoped they would have it fixed up. The 2022 Tucson SEL Gas model they gave me as a loaner died on me.... Stalled going down the interstate. Of course they were out of loaners and had to put me in a rental. This was my 5th brand new Hyundai in 8 years and the first one I personally had a problem with. It's a shame as these cars really do offer a lot to the buyer as far as features and space for the money, It just seems they are not reliable.

Regarding cargo space, the Tucson hybrid actually has more cargo space than the CRV hybrid according to the manufacturer Canadian websites. With rear seats up, Tucson has 1097L vs 1028L for the CRV. With rear seats down Tucson has 2108L vs 2030L for the CRV. The gas-only CRV has a larger cargo area than Tucson hybrid but it's probably better to compare the hybrid versions to each other.

Great review. Out here in the midwest US both Kia and Hyundai have very limited color choice. Even though they both list a wide range of color combinations (exterior/interior), in reality they reduce the choice (like Henry Ford... you can have it in any color as long as it is black). They don't allow a light color exterior and a light color interior in any trim level. A deal breaker in my view. Sadly, out here in the mid-west US there is no inventory available, and dealers are charging excessive prices for future orders. Thank goodness I still drive a great 2008 Toyota 4Runner.

Thank you for your easy to understand and thorough reviews! I have been plagued with indecision for months.
I am considering the Tucson PHEV or Sportage PHEV.
I like the exterior of the Sportage better, but the deciding factor for me will be the comfort of the bottom seat cushion for the front passenger (chronic pain). A firm seat/ride is too painful for me.
Which one is more plush, cushiony?
Or is there a different compact SUV you would recommend (that has 8-way adjustable passenger seats, preferably with heat/cool)?
I have sat in numerous different makes and models, but most are way to firm for me.
I really like the Lexus NX 350h. It's the top end of my budget. I find the cushion pretty comfortable, but the seats are a bit narrow. The thigh supports put too much pressure on my hips and exacerbate pain.

Find it a bit further away and take my eyes off the road a bit longer to work it. I find it funny that all of these new cars have to have collision avoidance systems on them for safety as Infotainment centers force you to take your eyes off the road longer than the old switches, knobs, levers etc.

you know people generally say vehicles are a wasted investment i think absolutely opposite to it, its better to invest at one go a big sum into something i can and will use as per my requirements(now whether you drive daily or occasionally that's ,entirely upto you) rather than investing 60 lakhs in a home and eventually paying more interest than it was ever required, when you afford this kind of cars worth 30 40 lakhs then you can say you are financially wealthy and stable because you had to shed money from your own pocket that's why ,might be bleeding to hear but everyone has their own way, not necessarily you have to buy this one or any other costly car but when you are investing you can always invest for better stuffs, its so cute car and big teddy bear for me and its more pinching to sell your car than your house ,cause you are selling something below market price and something which was very important for you because vehicles help you reach somewhere ,homes or houses doesn't

I have a 2023 Tucson Hybrid SEL Convenience... despite the advertised 37mpg, I'm almost always on 32mpg... mind you, I don't drive like a grandma (i'm not a maniac, but I dont want to take 3 minutes to get to 60mph)... I have done total full-blown grandma mode and I was able to get 37mpg... but you really have to drive like you're 100yo to get that kind of mileage. I'd say a bit bursty is 32mpg and if you drive like a maniac you'll probably get closer to 28mpg.

I have seen vids for the re-designed 2025 Tucson and the new interior I think is a step backwards to this Ioniq style minimalism. Ok it has larger screens but am I the only one who wonders why it's always just about the length of the screen and we just assume that they are the same height- so a 12" long screen is always bigger than 10.25"...there are 2 dimensions to the measurement not one.

Agree 100% re: 2025 design. Looks dated already. If you keep your car clean, a microfibre cloth is all that is needed to keep the piano black trim and nav screen looking great. The hybrid ultimate trim is very quiet and a pleasure to drive.

Hyundai's 1.6L Turbo has a really good track record of reliability (it's NOT a Theta II)... the electric engine added-in just helps, not hurts. I drove an ICE Tucson with the 1.6L Turbo and now own a Hybrid Tucson with the 1.6L+Electric and it's a noticeable improvement over the former Tucson.

After having a C6 Corvette with run flat tires and never using the run flat capabilities for 17 years, it was not a big deal for me. Of course, with only 678 miles on my new Tucson Hybrid Limited, I ran over a nail and got a "slow" leak. However, I was lucky and didn't need the flat fixer. I just drove to the dealer who fixed it for free. That made me think ... over the past 55 years of driving🏁, how many times have I needed a spare tire? ... twice. Once on my 1972 Vette, and I didn't have one (before cell phones and I had to hitchhike) and the second time on my wife's 69 Chevelle and then I had a spare plus two mounted snow tires in the trunk.🏁

I watched this as you posted on Twitter it would answer my question about wireless connectivity but it still doesn't answer or explain the logic. What I mean is most are adding this example Toyota to even the base but Kia Hyundai don't even offer it what makes it worth a fight over what? I purchased a 2022 Tucson Hybrid as soon as it was available in early 2021. It's a good car with a smooth and peppy engine, good ride and large cargo area but here are the things that bugged me about it: 1) Freeway mileage was significantly below the rating and no better than most regular compact SUV's with a 4 cylinder engine though it was very good around town and on lower speed 2-lanes 2) Annoying back-up sound 3) Top mounted rear wiper clears less of the window 4) No spare tire (Sportage Hybrid has compact) 5) Weak cargo floor panel 6) Electric creep speed too high. 7) Tended to stumble from a standstill when pedal was floored in ECO mode. In Sport mode it took off with no problem. Sold it after 6 months.
