Steve Goodman was the greatest singer/songwriter EVER!!! Steve, we miss you and we love you. Your legacy will live on forever, and hopefully the Cubs will one for you this year. Today is the 24th anniversary of Steve's departure from us. He is gone, but certainly not forgotten. God Bless Steve Goodman and the Chicago Cubs!!!
Eight years after this NBC piece they did finally win it all . GO CUBS GO ! If Steve Goodman had lived he would have only been 68 .....a great fan , a great singer-songwriter .
Steve Goodman and John Prine were both breaking out of Chicago when I got out of HS in 1971. They are still my two favorite songwriters, and I sing their songs every chance I get.
I'm glad that people are finally starting to know about Steve Goodman. Many 2003 Era Fans had no idea that "Go Cubs Go" had been around for over two decades. It's not just about the Cubs and their fans. It's about anyone that has died that has believed in the Chicago Cubs. Thank you Steve!
Mr. Leonard mentions the song being written "shortly" before Stevie's death, but does not mention that it was commissioned as a promo piece by WGN radio to play on the air starting at the beginning of the 1984 season, and was used by them for several seasons afterwards, prior to being, in his words "shelved for 20 years." Maybe by WGN, but never EVER by us fans of Steve and the Cubs!!
My son and I went to game 3 of the World Series and unfortunately the Cubs lost that game. Besides the lost, I was upset that I didn't get to sing Steve Goodman's song with my son ( and the rest of Chicago ). But in the end we got the ultimate "W". GO CUBS GO.
2-0 Cubs in NLDS over Giants today... 40,000+ fans sang Steve's Go Cubs Go song after today's game. Come on back Steve, we've got a seat for you right behind the Cubs Dugout this year...
I think some are missing the point (or perhaps weren't born yet) ? This is excellent footage of one of the best Cub fans ever. There were only a few whose ashes were 'officially' allowed to be scattered in the ivy. Ron Santo was one (can't remember the other), but the singer/songwriter Steve was among the chosen. Fact. Quite an honor.
We all miss you Chicago Shorty..(another of Steve's nicknames..no disrespect here).. The song is available on his "No Big Surprise" retrospective..along with "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" (Red Pajamas RPJ-008)..and of course "A Dying Cub Fans Last Request.."
I remember Go Cubs Go! and Jump! by Van Halen being played at Wrigley all the time in 84. That was the first year since the swan dive of 69 and the Fucking Mets that Cub fans had a feeling we could do it; it only took another 32 years to finally get the Pennant and the Series.
I remember seeing a video of Steve Goodman singing Go Cubs Go in the empty stands of Wrigley Field and saying he was asked to write it as an upbeat counterpart of the fantastic 'Dying Cubs Fan's Last request'. Is that only in my mind or does it exist?
Good news clip, but I'm sorry he didn't mention Steve's self appointed nickname of "cool hand leuk" in reference to the leukemia that ultimately killed him. And of course, he was the author of "City of New Orleans," made famous by Arlo Guthrie.
So lose Cubs lose lose Cubs lose Chicago. What do you say? The Cubs are shitty anyway. What’s the point of going to Wrigley Field? That place is Chicago’s landfill so lose Cubs lose lose Cubs lose. Hey Chicago what do you say? 3:31
Thanks Steve for writing our Anthem plus the Greatest Country and Western song of all time because
I still miss Steve Goodman. One of the greatest entertainers I ever had the privilege to see play live. RIP Mr. Goodman.

Right now the cubs are going to the World Series. Since 1945.
Everything about Steve brings me to tears...He was that GOOD, man
I completely agree!
And guess who won the pennant tonight. Steve's song is infectious and all die hard cub fans can sing it by heart.
Steve....I hope that you are on Heaven smiling down on you beloved Cubs....they Finally Did IT! And your wonderful song was a part of it all!
They did it Steve! They did it. Thanks for helping.
it's like his song became a good luck charm and an inspiration all in one. Steve Goodman is still rockin' it in heaven, I'm sure.
What a brave, delightful, talented man. Great video!
This video brought a tear to my eye.
WE WON STEVE!!!

It's like Steve knew it would happen.

He's there.
David would be proud of his cubs today!

Love you Steve!
The Angels will always be my hometown team, but Steve Goodman made me a Cubs fan!

It's time to let the public know, again. Go Cubs Go!
Go Cubs Go
I was surprised when they said it was "shelved for two decades" - I remember this playing in the mid-80s...
I remember seeing a video of Steve Goodman singing Go Cubs Go in the empty stands of Wrigley Field and saying he was asked to write it as an upbeat counterpart of the fantastic 'Dying Cubs Fan's Last request'. Is that only in my mind or does it exist?
That explains why, being born & raised in Chicago, I don't remember the song growing up watching WGN in the 80's and 90's.
Good news clip, but I'm sorry he didn't mention Steve's self appointed nickname of "cool hand leuk" in reference to the leukemia that ultimately killed him. And of course, he was the author of "City of New Orleans," made famous by Arlo Guthrie.
4 Cardinal fans here. Btw, they won.
right now cubs is 5 end Indians is 3 .GO CUBS GO! GO CUBS GO! HEY CHICAGO WHAT DO YOU SAY?
Adam Scotrt just won the Masters!
Anyone know where the video is of the bluegrass version showed at 2:55? I haven't been able to find it on the net.
Damn Tom Ricketts.
How did Steve Goodman die? Sorry, I'm new at this.
peachjedi Leukemia.
I'd like to think Harry cared! Ryne Sandberg!
"a dying Cub fans' last request" is a better song and more accurately puts it for the Cubs. If I were a Flub fan I'd slit my wrists.
So lose Cubs lose lose Cubs lose Chicago. What do you say? The Cubs are shitty anyway. What’s the point of going to Wrigley Field? That place is Chicago’s landfill so lose Cubs lose lose Cubs lose. Hey Chicago what do you say? 3:31
U mad bro?
