Maybe there was a message in this somewhere? That is, stop focussing on single player and think of the team. And the goals and the opportunities will come.
Yeah, I must agree with you. This was a really bad way to end the season. Especially since not quite everyone was on board with the complete abandonment of playing to win and just feed Matthews instead. Shows a lack of cohesion in the team, in addition to pissing away the opportunity to use this as a tune-up game.
That was one of the hardest games I've ever had to endure, and I couldn't turn it off.

Leafs dominated by Tampa in the first two periods. Their fourth line was their best line of the night.
Watching Matthews parent's reaction to his missed opportunities was the most entertainment the Leafs could muster.
Giving up more than 5 goals over their 5 games before the playoffs start. Should be a huge concern for this team, with Boston up next in 3 days.
I hope Marchy chirps Matthews about getting 69 and Matthews just lines him up open ice

THe obvious point is it became a mental issue. They focused too hard on the 70 . Just play your game and it would have come.
Bunkis you are in wonderland. Over 20 goals against in the last 4 game and they are going to fliip a switch and be good. Dream on boys. 4 more games and the chokers are done.

Disappointed he didn’t hit 70. He was on pace for 77 before he got flu… 20 posts. At the beginning of the year I thought he could get near 80. Definitely he is capable of it if everything goes right. He had 51 goals in a 50 game span 2 years ago.

Hey guys. Great show as always. My question to JD Bunkis, with regards to what you said about the core four needing a push from players like Bert and Domi, don't you think its shameful that the core four need inspiration/ direction from players on a much lower pay grade? I mean, shouldn't the guys making the most money be the leaders on the ice and set the example? Can you think of any other nhl team where that's the case?

Feel Leafs Executives set up Matthews for this significant long term failure - by not being content with 69.

Tavares drove the net for a rebound...lol It was a smart move man...lol Tampa was shadowing Matthews all night. The smartest move by far what he did. Driving the net is good man...more Leafs need to do that. If they don't they wont go far in the playoffs. Anyway the Toronto media was making a big thing out of the 70 goals man. I'm sure Matthews is out celebrating with the boys tn for the season . Scoring 69 is amazing . So he didn't get 70..who cares! Its not the end of the world man.
69 goals is quite a feat on it's on, but the Leafs need to get their act together. I doubt they will get far in the play offs....lack of consistence over the year and a coach that needs to go.

These clowns calling out Tavares for chasing “personal milestones” while the entire fanbase was screaming for the team to get Matthews to 70 goals is the most hypocritical thing I’ve heard in the last decade+
They played normal all year and dude got 69 goals, when they forced it he got ZERO goals. If they played a normal game and didn't worry about it, they would've had a much better outcome in both the matthews getting 70 and effort/win column.

I completely disagree with JD on this. This whole feed the puck to Mathews every single play is probably why he didn't get it. Every single player on the other team, everyone in the rink and everyone watching on tv knew they were trying to do that so it didn't work. I get that Tampa was kind of doing the same with Kootch, but getting an assist is a lot different then getting a goal because to stop the assist the Leafs have to cover everyone else on Tampa, to stop the goal Tampa just had to keep someone all over Matthews the whole night. Look he scored SIXTY NINE goals when everyone wasn't trying to feed him the puck intentionally why not just do that. Just play good (getting ready for the playoffs) hockey and odds are pretty good that the best goal scorer in the NHL will score. This focus on getting Matthews the puck and trying to funnel EVERY PLAY to him, was - as Sammy said - minor hockey league garbage. The Leafs looked as bad as I've seen them look all year. It was horrible and practically unwatchable. And knocking Tavares for scoring a goal is just ridiculous. But I'm not suprised I usally don't agree with 95% of JD's takes on things, so no surprise that he got it wrong here again
for a team that has been a zero in the playoffs last decade, they use the last few games to pad a stat of one player - if Mathews disappears in Game 1 can we officially make Leafs the biggest immature jokers of the league?
