I want to create a watering hole for people who want to discuss, learn and teach about history through UA-cam videos which you guys recommend to me through the comment section or over on Discord. Yeah, 80% of flowers and 95% of tulips are imported from the Netherlands; it is crazy. For food, we are the second largest exporter, behind the USA. The reclaimed land is flat, and its soil is very fertile. Add to that the idea that we approach everything as technology, including farming, and it is easier to understand how we became this dominant, despite being such a small country.

The Flevopolders were reclaimed from the lake IJsselmeer, which is fresh water. It used to be part of the North sea, but as it was cut off from the sea bij the 'afsluitdijk' (closure dyke) in 1932 it turned into fresh water over time because of the IJssel, a branch of the river rhine, flows into it.

@@lemoncurdcake Zeeland isn't in the centre of the Netherlands, so it would took a lot more effort to distribute that fresh water to the rest of the Netherlands in comparison to the IJsselmeer.

I love how you asked "what's korfball?" It's a form of hand thrown ball sport. It looks a lot like basketball and volleyball in a way. Korfball is a sport where you literally *need* your team 100% you don't have best teammates as you need everyone's participants. It's where you toss, run, dunk and throw the ball in the korf. A kort is a hard form of a net. It's a beautiful sport

The Dutch inventer Cornelis Drebbel invented the submarine, but the American David Bushnell designed a submarine that was first used in a war.
The Dutch submarine was meant to retrieve cargo from shipwreck I believe to have read somewhere.
Actually, there are is no evidence or even witnesses that David Bushnell actually used the submarine in action.

It is so high because it only takes exports into account and not produce for internal markets. Also if you import flowers from abroad and then export them again for a higher value it will add in your favour.
True. I work for one of the biggest export companies and today the auctioning system (the way growers sell their flowers to the export companies) was down for several hours which will lead to florists and event planners all over the globe having a big lack of product. We're key in the supply chain and when you take us out of that chain shit will fall apart within a day. Crazy to think we can be that big of a player in any bussiness really.
Not entirely true, these days most flowers are grown now in Africa, by…. Ok, I admit, by the Dutch, the auction houses are the biggest in the world and about 90% of the flowers in the world are going through those auctions.

Although far from as successful, the men's team are not that bad either ;)
I so agree with the medals thing at Olympics, Netherlands sometimes comes pretty close to the levels of the US, its amazing! Also yes, the dutch east india company is considered the highest valued company of all time. They even had the right to declare wars in their own name, have their own lands and armies. It was crazy, imagine Apple being able to wage war?? It was basically, one of the smartest ways to gain influence, have a company wage war instead of your country, and then when they needed help, they could be supported by the dutch provinces. While their money was gained through the stock market, the first stock market in history.
The area I lived in Rotterdam had people from 138 nationalities with the native Dutch being the largest minority at 30% of it all. I think you'll be hard pressed to find any place in the US with such diversity on such a small area with people living in good harmony. Those foreigners you saw were not all tourist.
Actually, it's 170 different nationalities these days.
Rotterdam get's a fair number of tourists but not nearly as much as Amsterdam. Funnily enough the groups of tourists often stand-out because their almost all from the same ethnic group. An average crowd of Rotterdam locals is just about always very multi-ethic, that's how we do in the most ethic diverse city in The Netherlands. :)
@CAPTAIN HOOK Dude... they are the #1 and #2 largests cities in the country by population (by a good margin). And especially Amsterdam is a tourist magnet and tourist are always followed by petty crime (pick-pockets, scammers, etc.).
Anywayz the facts are that Rotterdam happens to hold 4th place (2021) in crime, Maastricht is actually 2nd (tourists again probably).
Furthernore most crime is actually still done by criminals (to criminals). You really think different ethnic groups are running around the streets beating and killing each other in these cities!? And that wouldn't be on the news everyday? What part of the country do live in that has made you so jaded!?
By your logic Maastricht (21st in population, 17th in ethic population) is an ethnic-on-ethnic violence and crime ridden cesspool, while Rotterdam with 70% ethnic (most in the country by far) and 2nd in population is doing quite well with it's 4th place.

And did I say only petty crimes? They also blow up atm's and sometimes people get killed. But petty crimes are the bulk and because of pickpockets, shoplifting and stealing (from tourists) those drive up the total number of crimes. Look up how many gun related crimes there were vs. pickpockets, shoplifting or scammers.
And you seem to forget that The Netherlands is about 25% ethnic (14% non-Western). So the most crime by sheer numbers is by faaaaaaar still done by the 75% of native Dutch people in the country. There is no comparison...

We dutch people are very good at english, because we begin to learn it when we're very young. So English is kinda our second language.
And cartoons used to be subtitled instead of dubbed.

Hi I’m from The Netherlands and I’m a teaching assistent at a high school but I loved watching both videos about The Netherlands 🤗
I am dutch too and I play korfball so I will explane what the sport is. It is a national sport that is similair to netball and basketball. You have two korfs (similair to baskets but then without the net). You can't walk with the ball, you need to throw the ball to someone else in order to score by throwing the ball through the korf. The field is devided in two sections as well as the team. In one section one half of your team tries to make a point and in the other section the other half of your team tries to prevent the other team from scoring. When you put your hand up in front of someone with the ball from the other team they are not allowd to score. Those are the basics of the sport and what I like about this sport is that you have teams with boys and girls combined and in the autumn and winter it is inside and in the spring and summer it is outside. I hope you learned from this.
Fun Fact: Amsterdam is currently home to 178 different nationalities/culture therefore making it the most multicultural city in the world

It's also fun to realise how safe the country is. It's quite common to send your kids outside to play with other kids, without parental guidance. And we send them to school on a bike when they know the traffic rules well
Ignoring the tough winds sometimes, a bike is a really great vehicle. Especially considering you can start of so young with it.
Very handy as a student to get to school, next town over.
Korfball is like basketball with no backwall to the nets and instead of nets its a short yellow cylinder, also no dribbling
For those who want to know how the voc got so rich, bassicly the idea was: “hey if there are like 100 companies selling spices in the Netherlands it starts losing value because people sell it for cheaper.” So what they did was they all combined as 1 country so they could sell for more.

That 11 cities tour map shown is actually wrong, it starts with the wrong City, being Leeuwarden which is the capitol of the province.
Tour goes as following:
1. Leeuwarden
2. Sneek (Almost the same as Snake if you want to pronounce it)

5. Stavoren
6. Hindelopen
7. Workum
8. Bolsward
9. Harlingen
10. Franeker
11. Dokkum (same route back as it's a turning point)
12. Leeuwarden (Bonkevaart, which is the name of the canal they arrive at)

We turned the Zuiderzee (south sea) into a lake long before that! (IJsselmeer)
The onderzeeboot, or submarine as many call it, is a Dutch invention.
So is the shotgun which is pretty much no more then the blunderbuss (Donderbuis in Dutch) and so many other things.
Even a sniper rifle is technically speaking a Dutch invention, this from the 15th and 16th centuries.

fun fact about a place i live near in the netherlands:
most streets with the streetname "molen" have a windmill. a city named Bennekom has a street called molenstraat where there is no windmill. there was one before the second world war, but it blow up do to ammunition being either stored or made there by the germans in world war 2.

korfbal is similar to basketball, but with an straw basket instead of a net, there are also a couple different rules and regulations, but in the end the goal is to put a ball in the other teams basket

there is a movie about the elfstedentocht witch is based on a real elfstedentocht, where it had been cancelled due to the cold weather and the people still rode it out. multiple of them died to frostbite.
regarding salt water infiltration in the Flevopolder, not an issue, the inland sea known as the Ijsselmeer (Ijssel Lake) formerly southern sea was separated from the north sea by use of a dike,turning a salty sea into a fresh water lake

Cool hearing you speak about rugby, and yes Conga, Samoa, Fuji and New Zealand (Named after the Dutch province of Zeeland btw) have amazing teams. Well worth watching any matches of them, but a personal favourite player of mine is Jonah Lomu from the NZ national team. This guy was build like a tank (1.96m/6'5" and 120kg/264.5lbs) but could run 100m in under 11s.

Gezellig* It basically means that there is a nice atmosphere in the room. Like quite the opposite of when people say read the room in a negative way. It's basically that feeling of when you're with friends or family laughing together at the dinner table or hanging together in front of the tv watching your favorite netflix shows together. That feeling, that vibe you get, that is what we call gezellig. And (at least to me) gezellig even sounds like a chill but funny word, precicely like its meaning, so gezellig the word is gezellig
for a fact the sea next to flevoland actually has been separated from the real sea for so long that the water isn't actually salt anymore.

Korfball is played inside in winter and outdoors in spring, summer and autumn.
The size of the indoor court is 20 m × 40 m (22 yd × 44 yd), as are most outdoor courts. The court is divided into halves called zones. In each zone is a 3.5 m (11 ft) tall post with a basket at the top. This is positioned two-thirds of the distance between the center line and the back of the zone.[2]
The ball is very similar to the one used in association football, with a circumference of 68.0-70.5 cm (or a diameter of 21.75-22.45 cm), a weight of 445-475 grams, and a bounce height of 1.10-1.30 metres when dropped from a height of 1.80 metres.

A korfball team consists of eight players: four female and four male.[7]

Korfball match in the Netherlands
An international korfball match typically consists of two halves or four periods, with the length varying depending on the competition. When the match consists of halves, the duration is typically 25 minutes, with periods typically between 7 and 10 minutes, with a one-minute break between the first and second periods and between the third and fourth periods. At half time the break is five or ten minutes.[7]
Four players of each team are in one zone and the other four are in the other zone. Within each zone, a player may only defend a member of the opposite team of the same gender.
At the beginning of the match, one team chooses a particular half of the court. That half will be that team's defending zone, with "their" basket in it. Players score by throwing the ball through the opposing team's basket. After two goals, the teams change zones: defenders become attackers and attackers become defenders. In between those zone-changes, attackers cannot set foot on their defending zone or vice versa. At half time the teams swap halves of the court.
The rules prevent physical strength dominating the game. Blocking, tackling, and holding are not allowed, nor is kicking the ball.
Once a player has the ball, that player cannot dribble or walk with it; however, the player can move one foot as long as the foot on which the player landed when catching the ball stays in the same spot. Therefore, tactical and efficient teamwork is required, because players need each other in order to keep the ball moving.
A player may not attempt to score when defended, which occurs when the defender is in between the opponent and the basket, is facing his/her opponent, or is within arm's length and attempting to block the ball. This rule encourages fast movement while also limiting the impact of players' height compared to their opponents.
To answer your question, yes The Dutch East Indian Company was bigger (worth more) then Apple is at this moment. It had/has the biggest company net worth ever.
They planted certain crops to desalinate the ground. The Dutch even invented a way to use salt water to grow plants and grow plants with as little water as possible. The WUR (Wageningen University & research, addition to a university, the organization consists of a number of independent research institutes of the Agricultural Research Service.

2:48 Dutchie here, to prove we are very decent at speaking English. I think you meant to say that we are more ''fluent'' in English than other countries. At middle school we already have English as a obligated class, so you aren't allowed to pass school if you haven't passed the English exams. This continues when we go to study, I think you would call it college. Same here, English is in your final exam. And because of that, we have a multilingual percentage of 95% of all people in The Netherlands. Only the elderly people and immigrants have trouble speaking other languages, but almost all young and true Dutch people know how to communicate in English.
@McJibbin, salt water doesnt infiltrate Flevoland, because there is no salt water there. A bit further up north, a huge barrier/dike was built between Friesland and North-Holland in the 1930's: The Afsluitdijk. This 20 mile long dike caused the water to the south to become fresh over time (due to river water pouring in). Flevoland was only constructed in the 1960's and thus in fresh water ;)
Okay, I you go by a boat that is small but seaworthy, you can go from Rotterdam up the Maas, then Waal, Rhine and the Rhine-Danube Canal, Danube, Black Sea and up the Dnieper you might even get to connect to the Volga.
The 80-years war started as a revolt in 1568, saw the declartion of independence in 1581 and the formation of the Dutch Republic in 1568, it ended with the peace of Munster or peace of Westphalia together with the 30 years war. The 30-years war was basically a religious war, while the 80-years war was for independence because the Dutch wanted religious tolerance rather than a victorious religion.
The last Olympics the Dutch beat the rest of continental Europe on medals. Most impressive though was probably the silver medal on the men's 4x400 meter because Track&Field is such a huge sport worldwide, and this was not the result of one accidental supertalent, but of a program to use the available talent. The cycling actually contributes more to other sports because it makes kids independent and they can practice most sports without help from their parents by cycling to training or matches in the evening.

Hello... The reason we speak english with an american accent, is because we do not dub american tv shows. We subtitle. Accents are created, by copying what you hear. It is basicly intergrated in our language. We even have radio commercials in english.
Cycling is life in the Netherlands.
If you don't own a drivers licence and a car, next to public transport, it's a way to get from A to B.
Then again, car parkings are expensive (there's not a lot of room), so most people use bikes and/or public transport.

The star shaped castle youre asking of i think is called "Heusden" it was bombed in ww2, theres still ruïnes nowadays and some canons left from the period. A lot of buildings are really old still and it has lot of history, wich you can check out at the city hall. Hope you read it, cause i think most dutch pple dont know about the place and history of it tbh.

By boot im not sure but I know you can get as far as southern Germany if you take just one river if the Danube river connects to the Rhine river or one of the other major rivers as far as eastern europe

Because of the "afsluitdijk" the water is not salt around flevoland, it is a lake, not a sea.

Im from Lelystad the capital of the province Flevoland and the water next to it is freshwater because the two lakes next to it markermeer and ijsselmeer are separated from the sea by the afsluitdijk and houtribdijk

Americans that come work here ( tbh even belgians ) in a leadership function have a hard time adapting since they are used to being on top. While here they get the opinion of their employee thrown in their faces if the employee thinks they know better due to experience or field of study. Some think it's rude while we think all people are created equal and it doesnt matter if you have a lower or higher function.

We got castled in the netherlands. A big one close to my home is the Muiderslot (tourists call it Amsterdam Castle, but it isnt in amsterdam at all, it is in Muiden) its a castle in fully intact state (after some reconstructions here and there) it has a very cool story about it being seiged once to kill the owner at the time (i think) Graaf Floris, he tried to escape by hopping in a big chest and being shipped off on a cart, but he got caught. (I think thats the story but its been a while)

Those 2 polders were not the first, we did a lot of smaller parts long before that. The first big part was made for the making of the Afsluitdijk on the side of North-Holland, that was the try out, after that we made the two common known polders.
