8:27 the small accent isn't because the language is similar. Its cause they hardly dub tv in the Netherlands. So besides learning English in school, we also hear it spoken by natives on a daily basis....so that teaches us the right pronunciation. So its not cause the language is easy to us...its cause we practice it A LOT. So the accent we do have is cause we don't use certain sounds that much in our language so its more difficult for us to reproduce.

But the thing about the Netherlands is: every province has its own dialect. and actually, every 20km approx. Speaks another dialect. I, for example: live in a little place in north Holland. the Dutch speak English well because most of us grew up watching English cartoons/movies/series and listening to music that's also mostly English. The painting The Potato Eaters is considered by art experts to be the most important work of Vincent van Gogh's early Dutch period. The work shows a peasant family having a simple meal by lamplight. The artist himself saw the painting as his masterpiece. With the work he wanted to show that he had become a skilled figure painter.

About the oldest stock exchange, usually the king would pay for ships to trade, but we ditched the king of Spain (The Netherlands was a part of the Spanish kingdom). So we had to pay for the ships ourselves. People could buy shares to finance trips in exchange for a part of the profit. So that is how the exchange came in existence.

'how did she know I was American?' I think she knew by how you ride the bike, 'just for fun', thats mostly something only small children do here... and tourists. Biking, especially in a busy city, with all the traffic, is no joke. You have to look around, pay attention, keep a steady course as to not confuse onlookers to your plan. Communicate with your eyes: 'I am crossing this intersection, you come from the other side, I go faster, I will cross first, ok?' is all communicated at a glance, with cars as well: 'did you see me?' 'yes!' 'oh ok, I can cross safely'
If you are all over the place and dont pay attention to the traffic around you: you are a nuisance to that traffic. They cannot predict if you decide to turn left or right or swerve 'for fun', because you make no eye-contact, you are oblivious to their existence: they have to drive around you in a wide circle. Which is annoying and even slightly more dangerous, if you take up all of the bike lane, and they have to swerve out into the car lane to pass you, haha.
Dont be upset. Biking is our second nature. You can practice and learn in a few weeks, with these two rules of thumb: 'ride a steady route' (no sudden swerves, braking or accelerating or riding on your back wheel to impress the girls), and 'situational awareness' (constantly look around, know who is behind you, scan intersections, make eye contact with people who will cross your path, estimate who will be faster, realize that car doors can open, that kids can turn up from behind a car at any moment chasing a ball etc)

A few corrections: Most of the population lives outside of the two Hollands. Of the 17+ million Dutch citizens, only about 7- million live in the two Hollands. Yes, they do contain quite a lot of the Dutch population, but the other 10 provinces still have more people living in them. The Netherlands doesn't border Luxembourg BTW, it only borders Belgium and Germany. The Belgium Ardennes separate The Netherlands and Luxembourg. Regarding religion: basically the country was split into two parts, the Southern provinces were mainly Roman Catholic and the Northern provinces were mainly Protestant (what we call below and above the rivers as the split is basically along the lines of the rivers Meuse and Rhine). But that is historical as most Dutch people have become a-religious (in whatever form you want to define that). Regarding the reason for Spanish rule: basically the extended Netherlands (what is now called the BeNeLux) was divided into feudal lands, which pledged allegiance to the Austrian branch of the Habsburg family (which basically was running a lot of Europe at the time). Their Spanish branch lacked a male heir and so the Austrian branch sent one of their lesser males to Spain to rejuvenate that branch and to produce a new male heir. The guy they sent also had the BeNeLux region as his "property", but he was pretty lenient towards the Dutch population. When his son became King of Spain this leniency went away as he had been raised strongly Catholic. So he tried to impose a return to Catholicism in the northern part of The Netherlands (the south still being Catholic). That was not acceptable and let to the revolt and the 80 years war with Spain (where they held on to most of what is now Belgium and split the region in two). BTW: The colonial period was not so much run by the Dutch government, but was run by the two public companies, the VOC (United East India Company) and the WIC (West India Company). The Dutch government inherited the remaining properties of these companies when they finally went bankrupt around 1799. The VOC at the height of its run was worth more than today's 20 biggest corporations taken together!

8:25 I went on holiday in Ireland a few years ago and stayed in a B&B in Dublin for the first few days. There was an Irish couple there from the south of Ireland who were attending a wedding in Dublin, so they were there for a few days as well, and during breakfast we had some casual conversations. They found out I was Dutch on the last morning we were there, they thought I was American because of my accent 😬
12:27 There were the romans first, they basically controlled the southern part of the modern country, mostly up to the rhine river. Cities like Nijmegen, Voorburg and Maastricht were quite important in this area. The northern part of the country was ruled by various Germanic tribes. After the roman empire dissolved, the Carolingians took over and eventually the Dutch lands became part of the Holy Roman Empire. And yes, there were vikings as well. There are quite a few star fortresses in the Netherlands, even more older forts or castles that would get star fortress adaptions to it being mostly the points if you like of these star forts.
Nederlandic? Well that is a word I have never seen before.
For English, the Dutch learn it from a very young age almost making it their second language (or if you are living in the Friesland province, 3rd language) Also the Dutch are insanely good at learning new languages over all compared to most other countries in general terms.
The religion thing in the Netherlands is quite easy to understand actually. You are allowed to have a religion, but just as well allowed to have none at all.
You are not allowed to discriminate against anyone based on their religion or whether they don't have one.
It's different in that perspective from the US where you are almost forced to have one and if you don't it get force fed to you.
10:40 It has nothing specifically to do with aliens. It just says we do believe that something more is out there whatever it might be. Most people hearing this, from a person with religion perspective at least, think this directly refers to aliens or the super natural. However the reality is that it remains undefined. As it, 'yes there is something out there but we have no idea how to call it as we don't know what it is or looks like'. It's a more realistic view based on science and truth instead of what religion does, give a religious figure (god) the blame for it all.
For the Dutch flag... that is actually a lot more complicated then what is portrayed here.
Wikipedia doesn't state everything in facts, but you might get a general flag.
btw, did you know the Dutch flag is the base for ALL flags, including the US flag, if it comes to keeping it simple and clear? All striped flags directly are descendant from the Dutch flag.
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_the_Netherlands
Viking history is very much in the Dutch culture, or more specific for the Frisians who part of the viking culture as well. They married with mostly the Danish vikings.
But also Ancient Rome didn't want to tango with them because these people were a lot more fierce then any other group they encountered.
14:55 Those are wigs, not actually their own hair. And yes, lice were a huge problem in those days.
Not to be racist, but there are quite a few stereotypical features Americans show.
    1. Americans are quite loud, you often hear them before you see them
    2. Their walk almost states "Look at me being the best". While in the Netherlands we try to keep it low key (act normal and you will be crazy enough, roughly translated)
    3. Credit cards are a US thing, if a tourist gets out their credit card the highest chance is that it is a American.
    4. A American group prefers to walk on the street or bicycle lane instead of the sidewalk (which is a huge no-no in the Netherlands unless you wish to get run over)
    5. Americans often skip small cities/towns, only sticking to the large cities like Amsterdam.
    6. A lot of Americans run to the coffeeshops as soon as they land thinking weed is legal. Which it isn't, the police just won't bother you if you have 5 grams or less on you as a token of good will and not wanting too much paper work.
    7. Red light district in Amsterdam is flooded with Americans trying to take photo's of the girls, which is forbidden and bouncers can actually toss you in the canals. It is kinda a 'Why would you do something so obviously forbidden?".
    8. Americans want to get the biggest cars they can get to simulate their own car at home. While then realizing they get stuck in traffic, narrow city streets and are unable to park where they plan to park. And still blame the Dutch for their own stupidity.
    9. Americans run to American fast food restaurants quicker then try something new for some reason. It's there for a lot more likely you will encounter American tourists at a McDonalds or Burger King then a local fish store or fast food shop.
    10. America has a tipping culture, but in the Netherlands or anywhere else for that matter this is not the case. All costs are included meaning the food, tax, tips, etc. You are not required to pay a tip, in some cases it is even seen as a insult depending on where you are.
    11. Unrealistic expectations because they rarely do their research at home before leaving.
    12. Thinking everyone speaks English, or that no one speaks English (or not well enough)
    13. Calling or playing any music or video on public transportation or in public. While there are annoying Dutch kids that think it's cool, in general the Dutch frown on this behavior if not outright tell you to please plug it in or wait until you are in a better situation. No one wants to hear your music, videos or calls. Be mindful over everyone around you. (which one is perhaps also part of being loud)
    14. Pushing their cameras in the faces of other people. Not only is this insanely rude, you are asking for trouble.
    15. Using bicycles as if they were in the US, this meaning for recreational purposes instead of getting from A to B. While not bad on it's own, it's a whole different matter on public roads and side walks (Sidewalks are for pedestrians, not bicycles!)
    16. The clothes betray the Americans real fast.
21: 52 Potato eaters, thats the name of that painting.

What no one tells about the 'Dutch Golden Age' is that the engine of it wasn't the Dutch East India Company but the domination/monopoly on trade with the Baltic Region ("the Mother (of all) Trade"). From 1550s-1680? the Dutch had an innovation with wide cargo body ships with fairly narrow decks, which made them pay less toll at the Öresund (Copenhagen). This domination made it possible to dominate trade in Asia and Americas. The Dutch weren;t powerful because of the Asia trade, but because they were Powerful (via the Baltic trade), they could dominate the Asian trade and slave trade . Until 1680s , when they lost the dominance on the Baltic to England and rising nation powers of Sweden, Prussia and Russia... In the 18th century they still had the colonies, but not the power of before. (And without much of the Baltic trade , the Colonial trade would have more importance to the economy of the Dutch Republic than in the 17th century..).

    • @DenUitvreter
      @DenUitvreter Рік тому +1

@@allws9683 In 1592 they had an innovation called the crank, that let the windmills saw wood, allowing them to build ships 30 times faster than others. So they did, the Oresund toll story is contested, but the Dutch could outcompete them all with the efficient freight ships and the low interest rates thanks to banking innovations. The North Sea trade was bigger than the Asian trade too, just like the Dutch part of the Mediterranean trade, even the good old herring fishery was more profitable than the entire VOC at it's peak. The VOC was important because it brough back the interesting stuff, not the bulk goods that made the Dutch the big money.
The Dutch only gave up on their objections to the slave trade in 1638 because of Dutch Brazil. But when that was lost to Portugal again, Spain finally gave up it's war against Dutch independence so there was no more privateeering to do, and the settlements in North-America had failed,, the WIC started slavetrading for the British, French, Spanish and Portuguese. They were big in that for a short while but the English took over because they managed to keep more slaves (and crew) alive.
Of course in 1688 the Dutch invaded England to set it up for the British Empire, but it actually was only around 1800 before the British took over as the world's biggest traders. The Dutch dominance of the trade around 1650 was huge, the Dutch Republic did more than half of all European shipping, the VOC only owned less than 1% of all Dutch merchant ships.

A couple of years ago they found city walls under the ground in the city center whilst building a parking garage, so now it's a small museum because we like history 😄 also Nijmegen was bombed heavily during WW2 since its almost against the German border and a couple of kilometers north you had the 'Slag om Arnhem' where the movie A Bridge too Far is based upon. Welcome to NL! There's a lot that should surprise you, and hopefully impress you too! We didn't build up the land (mostly) we lowered the water! Religion is not part of politics; it's personal and private and not polite as a public discussion and evangelism is really frowned upon. Often you will see the Dutch flag flown with an orange pennant at the top. Which is a sort of Royalist signal 'Orange on top' ("Oranje boven") . As you saw there are a lot more windmills these days.

Minuit didn't ran into natives, they traded with the natives who were experienced traders, they traded a lot with other natives well before the Dutch arrived, ,not some primitives impressed with trinkets and beads. The 24 dollars is a simplistic calculation of what was 60 guilders in goods. 60 guilders back than would equate to about 4000 dollars in metal goods like axes, knives and pots and pans, valuable to the natives who didn't have metal.

*The Spanish king didn't just arrive and ruin everything!*
He simply succeeded his father, Charles V, who was Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire AKA the Habsburg Empire.
But when Philip II rose to the throne, the Habsburg Empire split into the German part and the Spanish part, and so he became king of Spain, also inheriting the Low Countries.
The Low Countries were formerly annexed and conquered by the Burgundians, who united all the seperate states that later became The Netherlands.
Example: Holland and Utrecht fought several bloody small wars against each other before the Burgundians took over and ruined everything.
The Burgundians did not have a male heir in the end so their lands became property of the Habsburg Empire through marriage.
*It's simply not true that Dutch is so close to English that you barely hear any accent.*
The current common Dutch skill to speak English without much of an accent only started appearing around 30 years ago.
If you speak to older Dutch folks who speak English, you'll be amazed at the massive accent they have.
"Yes, yoo sea, yoo go rite, levt, strate ahat en then yool sea it"
*If you wish to learn about the Dutch Eighty Years' War, look up the Defragged History channel.*
Amsterdam was not nearly as important when the war started, that role was played by the city of Antwerp (currently in Belgium).
The city of Deventer (you may know it if you watched the movie A Bridge Too Far because that's where they shot the Arnhem scenes)
for instance was already a city in 952.
Only at the beginning, when The Netherlands was first formed, during the Eighty Years' War, was Protestantism the dominant religion.
However, after only one or two centuries, it didn't matter that much anymore and Catholicism has always been better at keeping the sheep in the flock.
Protestantism is not a single religion but a whole bunch of religions that all worship the same god but with different levels of truly believing.
Calvinists believe that you don't have to lead a good life or do anything to please their god or anyone else for that matter. They are (some of them) predestined to be saved, no matter what. While most of themn will be doomed, no matter what they say or do. Pretty incredible religion.
With the spread of television and the modern media, many Protestants simply stopped believing.

Also, the cringe thing when thinking about the past is a mechanism which helps you not to repeat past "failures". The memory is pulled from your long term memory to your working memory (often association will be the trigger here, like the bikes were for you). The physical cringe you feel is the feeling you add to the memory after which you store it in your long term memory again. The next time you think about repeating your actions of this previously experienced failure, you will also feel the cringe or shame you added to the memory which helps prohibit the behaviour.
This mechanism works the other way around as well, where pride or joy are the added feeling which stimulate you to repeat your succesfull actions in the future.

The breakup of the 'verzuiling' (which was largely based on Protestant vs Catholic vs 'Other' (liberals or socialists) was a pretty recent development, the last couple of decades, so cultural markers from that time still carry over because a lot of those people that did live thorugh it haven'' died yet and have instilled some of that pride in their children as well.

Tourists from other provinces are often in awe visiting the first time, saying "oh!!! It's just like Switzerland!". it's exualy a bit funny bc i'm from the ntherlands and i just had a history test about spain taking over the netherlands but bassicly.
the king of spain wanted the netherlands because they had good trade and then Filips II (king of spain) made willem of orange stadtholder. there were also all kinds of faiths such as Catholic and Protestant. Protestant people were called heretics because Filip II was a Catholic and he said that only Catholics should be believed. the protestants left the country and went to other countries such as germany or belgium. and later revolted and the Netherlands had reconquered their country.
the ntherlands was in that time called something else and was a bit bigger then now bc it also had a bit of belgium.
this took a lot of time to translate for me so if there are some things not right spelt or smth then that's why
btw this isn't everything bc that just way to much to type

You were probably spoken to in English because you were on a rental bike and yelled at because of that same reason. I'm Dutch and live close to Amsterdam, I borrowed someone's rental bike once and got yelled at. I wasn't doing anything stupid or going slow. The Dutch grow up with (American) English TV shows with subtitles, not dubbed shows, so we are surrounded by English from a young age. this is why most of us are quite good at (American) English. And last, that painting is called "De Aardappeleters" (The Potato Eaters).

We are far more protestant than roman catholic. Although the Roman Catholic Church in the Netherlands has the most affiliated people, the Protestant Church Netherlands has about 1.5 million affiliates. We have a very long calvinistic history and it shaped our country's soul and values so much, that even Dutch roman catholics are in a way culturally calvinistic. Roman Catholicism was banned from public life for a long period of time.

Hi there, dutchy here. Freedom from religion means: you can follow a religion here, and you will be respected for it, but if you are not religious, you will rarely see anything religous. Yes, there are churches and yes we do have the religious holidays, but on TV and other media, there's no word about God unless you specifically follow a religious program. So freedom from religion here means that it is just not there unless you actively choose to search for it, as where freedom of religion means: people respect that you don't follow it, but its still very much around you.
Also, we dutchies do definitely have our own accent when it comes to speaking english, but given that most of our tv programs are english too with dutch subtitles, people actively learn english here, and those that try to speak english more profound will also try to sound more american.
I can speak to you in a dutch accent and you will clearly hear it, but I can also speak in an american accent and you get the result that you learned. The biggest thing with a dutch accent is how we don't flow our language. We have lots of gaps between the words where in english you keep the tonal of the last word you speak until you are about to say the next word and flow that together. Dutchies will say the word, then a small pause, then say the next word, and so on. We say the words very fast and short too making the pauses stand out even more. As one would say, we are very efficient with our language.

11:07 I don’t have a video but I can explain it in a oversimplified form. Before the Spanish rule the lowlands were ruled by a different kingdom called Burgundy. That kingdom got split between the Austrian Habsburgs and France with the Austrians gaining the lowlands. Spain then also got the Habsburg Dynasty on their throne and thus Spain, Austria(and all of it’s other dominions) and the lowlands were all ruled by one person at a certain point. In 1555 that person, Charles V, died and the empire split between an Austrian half and a Spanish half. The Spanish half also got the lowlands and started persecuting Protestants. This all came to a boiling point in 1568 when there was an outright rebellion and the 80 years war began.

I think a massive contributor to the fact Dutch/Beligian speak such good English is the fact that the BBC has always been such a broadscasting powerhouse and being a very flat country they recieve all the TV channels and before that, the Radio stations, better than any of the countries around them. I live across the water in Norfolk and our area is very flat too so i could see why. When i met Belgian friends on holiday once, all she wanted to do was talk about GB soaps. I was quite amused by this, but it makes sense. I guess when they learn in school they start watching/listening and dont look back.

Dutch is about as closely related to English as it is to German (especially Low German dialects), it's just that English went through a lot of changes in the past millennium or so thanks to French (Norman) and Scandinavian (Viking) influences that made it so different from its relatives. If you look at Old or even Middle English, where a lot of its West Germanic roots are still present, you'll find they have a lot more in common. Two lesser-known languages that bridge the gap, both in terms of similarity/mutual intelligibility and actually being related, are Scots and Frisian!

We don’t ride our bikes all day! On average just an hour (maybe 2) per day, when you add up commuting, shopping and appointments and going out for dinner or drinks. We don’t love bikes, we use them. And we speak english to anyone on a bike wearing a helmet and cycling at just 5 km/h looking around instead of straight ahead. We just assume you’re a foreigner if you ride a bike like that!
Dutch may be really similar to english, and we do use a bit of english daily, but after speaking english for hours, my tongue gets really tired.

Ietsisme is more about you being able to believe that there maybe is a god like being but don’t have to pray, ietsisme is a term to describe you believe in some celestial things but not in all.

the Freedom *from* religion is basically that religion doesn't dictate any of the government's decisions because we have a seperation between Church and State. You are allowed to believe what you want, but you are not allowed to use your religion to harm or oppress other people.
Also, most Protestants only live in Holland or Zeeland (or the Bible Belt through the country), but Catholicism is much more widespread especially in the south of the country. In the days of the Dutch Republic, roughly half to 2/3rds of the country was still Catholic, but the ruling elite were all Protestant/Calvinist.
