I'm going to keep this in mind! Thanks for letting me know. I've seen a couple of people use a little bit of compost in their seed starting mix for an extra "boost".
Yeah, soil mites were definitely a new thing for me. I checked the ingredient mixes again, both bags contain pine bark and compost/manure compost, which the mites are attracted to. Maybe I got a "bad" bag? Idk which one they came from since I mixed them. For the first time, I am trying to make leaf mulch, not much has been happening since it's been cold? And I would like to try burying small food scrap piles to see how that works. I don't plan on making a compost bin anytime soon.
I used the dollar tree potting soil with the wood chips, it does not look sandy like this one, I planted elephant ear bulbs, they sprouted in two weeks and now have big leaves. I did not mix in another soil. Water in the morning and made sure pots have drain.
I've looked for and never found the seed starting mix, which I'd be glad try try since it's from American Seed. I bought a different brand at Home Depot instead - a much larger bag, so the total cost is probably about the same. Several years ago I bought potting soil at DT and it was pretty good, and larger bags than what they currently have, so I haven't bought soil there since. I usually use Kellogg Patio Plus for my outdoor containers.
I noticed the some of the stores I went to didn't stock as much of the American Seed starting mix like they usually have in the past. I've been thought about trying the Kellogg brand. Is that your go-to brand? Thanks for watching!

It says "contain composted aged softwood bark fines, humus, sand, perlite." What are your thoughts on the ingredients? I'm still new at gardening and don't know if these are a good media.
It's crazy how much the bags differ. Da Whole World 🌎 should be built up by Now
Oh nooo! I bought the blue bag and it is mostly chunks of dirt clay and rocks and mine when planted even started to grow grass and some weird red plant that kind of look like a pepper but red I was Furious because I thought my pepper sprouted but it was just grass growing. I would stay away from this stuff and just buy a premium mix from Miracle Grow like there organic performance
😳 That's crazy. It's interesting that people are getting different things in these bags. I haven't seen any of these blue bags of potting soil this year yet. The stores have been stocked with the other green potting soil bags. Not bad, but too small for the price.
This is the second season having plants, first season having to repot. So I bought the blue soil to 3 plants and although they are growing so pretty, I keep seeing green sticks growing, thank you for this comment.
I would not chance this with vegetables
I've used the mix and it's fine. You just have to amend it like you would with other mixes.
Last one looks worse now lol
The potting soil looks like crap now mix that with the seed starting mix and it would probably make wonderful soil
I agree.
It smells bad and reminds me of dirty kitty litter with some compost added. Yuck
That's strange
YUP! I found chunks of what appears to be & smell like animal excrement
I bought the “potting soil” from dollar tree a week ago and it is literally nothing but dirt in the bag. And the crap had so much clay in it I couldn’t break the many clumps apart for the life of me. I’m just gonna take it and throw it out because you cant mix it with anything. A complete waste of money.
Smh! That's terrible. I hope you didn't spend too much buying a bunch! People have been saying how bad the bags are. My stores don't even get them anymore.
Nothing grew from dollar tree seed mix. Wont buy again!
Oh wow, that's unfortunate! What will you be using instead?
Me too...spring 2020... nightmare
Yup,same,seeds,bulbs,seed strips in box...NOTHING!
Mine was mostly mulch 🤔 guessing nothing going to grow out of it lol
Lol you never know! At least you have mulch for your plants now.
@@vesgardens they actually sprouted and under my mom the plant killers care can’t believe it! 🤣
Lol see! This sounds like a new beginning for your mom now too #greenthumb!
@@vesgardens I dunno how they survived she was drowning them in water every day lol!
