I changed a head gasket on a 78 and thought the same when I started it. As mentioned in the comments after I synced the carbs it all went away. I drove the bike a year earlier and it wasn't noisy so I thought it a safe bet to do the work I did.
After we discovered the coolant in the oil, combined with all that need fixed on this bike the customer stopped repairs and sold the bike. Thanks for watching 🐲
It's forty two years old, probably has a lot miles on it so it doesn't owe the owner anything. There's a 2007 Goldwind in group of bikers I know that has 170,000 miles on it without any major work and showroom condition. If you perform the scheduled maintenance, do regular checks and work on them yourself, Honda Goldwings just keep on going.
Your engine knock is caused by the HY-VO chain slaping around caused by a weak cylinder not firing on the idle and low speed carb circuit. Clean and sync the carbs should eliminate the knock. Water pump failure and or leaking coolant O-Rings in waterpump cavity are the cause of water and oil mixing. With all the other issues bike has, might not be worth doing.
The chain slap came to mind early on, I mentioned I thought it was a cylinder not firing because I've experienced that before and it did sound like a knock until I got that bike squared away, but on this bike all plugs were burning about the same. But as I ran it more, even at higher rpms, the knock got louder, and the bike picked up a bad vibration. With all the other problems this bike has, my customer quickly lost interest. He has already spent a good bit at this point. Thanks appreciate the advice. Thanks for watching 🐲

@@thedragon2299 I would like to buy it as a parts bike maybe ??? Mostly for the chassis parts, do not really need the engine.
@anonimous2451 I will check with the customer, but I think the customer has someone interested in it.
