  • Alan White's music went silent in May when died after a brief illness at the age of 72. He passed 11 days after the couple celebrated their 40th anniversary.
"We were just a team and we knew how to be a team together," said Gigi White, wiping tears from her eyes. "We did it better together than either of us could do individually. My love for him is boundless."
After her husband's death, Gigi White's life was forced into a different rhythm, but she found it -- strong and steady here at home.
"We didn't expect this. It has been a real adjustment," said Gigi White, her voice growing quiet. "I have a community around me now...because this is difficult. People ask if I'm going to stay? Of course, I'm going to stay. This is my home. This is where our friends are. This is where I'm supported now."
Now, Gigi White wants to honor her husband, and the community that has given them both so much, with a benefit concert to fight hunger this Sunday, October 2, at Seattle's Paramount Theater. The proceeds will support WhyHunger, a leading anti-hunger nonprofit Alan White supported throughout his life.
Members of YES, Pearl Jam, Heart and more will perform.

Such a sad reality. He was a superb drummer and by all accounts, a very positive, open person. RIP Alan.

I just played Starship Trooper and Roundabout to get my 11-year old daughter outta bed and motivated for school. She was particularly impressed by the sounds of Roundabout. I told her the members of the group and said I wasn't sure if Bruford or White played on that recording. I then looked up the playlist and saw it was Bruford who played on Fragile.

I can't even begin to say how much Mr White and the band he played in affected my life. He is missed. What a great legacy he left.

I did not know much about Yes music in 1980 when my uncle dragged me to one of their concerts (The Drama tour). After I saw him play that night, I was so impressed that I convinced my dad to buy me a set of Ludwigs from a pawn shop a few weeks later. Through the years, Alan White and Yes have been one of my biggest influences musically. Only a few days until the 1 year anniversary of his death, and I still feel great sadness. My condolences to his family. Alan was a great drummer and from all accounts a wonderful human being.

He pioneered sounds and techniques that elevated Yes to heights they might not have reached otherwise. The wild genius Yes wove into Relayer probably saved my life because I was so despondent about everything else around me yet here came this literal miracle of creativity and deep meaning that overwhelmed my sadness and loss. I was so inspired and moved to hear them. I adore all of them for their positivity and brilliant musicianship.

The late Mr White's Ramshackled album is in my humble opinion some of the best solo work by the old Yes line-up.

I saw Alan play in Detroit Cobo in 72, and from that moment onward he captured me as did the rest of this great band. RIP Mr. Alan White

In a business where most have plenty of broken relationships and enemies, Alan White apparently was one of the most universally admired and well-liked people. That may be his greatest legacy...

I took lessons for 8 years, but I learned to play from listening to Alan White and Bill Bruford. Alan's single-stroke roll was incomparable and he was just a rock. RIP.

I wish I could attend. My condolences to the White family. Alan was my drum hero growing up inspiring me to play drums. I fully understand what Gigi is saying 40 years you build a partnership for my wife and I have that same partnership of building together a better life for all.
