  • Alan White of Yes - All About Rush Pays Tribute to the Legend
All About Rush, and more specifically me personally, was saddened to hear of the passing of one of the greatest Progressive Rock drummers of all time - Alan White of Yes.
I don't think Alan got the recognition he deserved as a great drummer. Just the fact that he was tasked to learn the entire set list for the "Close to the Edge" tour in three days time was a monumental feat in and of itself! The fact that he remained the drummer of Yes to the end showed that absolutely deserved to fill those huge shoes, namely Bill Bruford.
I absolutely LOVED his style of playing - extremely efficient yet powerful, great balance behind the kit allowing his arms and hands to do practically all the work. You may not have gone to a Yes concert for an 'Alan White drum solo' per se, but if you just listen to a live recording from the seventies you would think that he's flailing all over the place, but no - controlled chaos.
I would consider him my second-favorite drummer of all time, after Neil Peart. So sad that they are both gone. I think that, at least from a distance, they had a mutual respect for one another, and I have a feeling Neil learned a thing or two from Alan. I'm just glad that I had a chance to see Mr. White play live, even though it was just one time.
So here's my tribute to the legendary Alan White. He will be most sorely missed!

Long long story but a couple of months ago Alan sent me a signed picture. I never imagined we would lose him so soon after. He has always been one of my very favorites. His work on Relayer is unsurpassed in prog drumming. 🙏🏻

6.5 x 14 Ludwig Supraphonic is the same snare drum I have used for my entire life. I bought my current snare drum in 1993, it has been so versatile and dependable, it has never let me down, and I will never use any other snare drum...a true workhorse of a snare drum if there ever was one...the perfect snare drum for any type of music.
Alan White was very much the same way...a very versatile, dependable, solid workhorse of a drummer who made every band he played with sound their very best. Mr. White will be sorely missed. R.I.P. to another great legend! 😪

I'm a huge Rush fan and an equally huge YES fan, I saw both many times from 1976-2011. My dad was a big band drummer, so drumming has always been a focal point for the music I love.
Zeppelin, The Who, Rush of course (Neil is also my favorite drummer, my dad thought he had stokes, a huge compliment from him) and YES with both Bill and Alan. I play bass because of Chris Squire. I was 3rd in 79 for Tormato at MSG. Seeing all of them up close was an amazing show and long lasting memory. and I was 20th row left side of stage for the Big Generator tour in Dec 1987. I will miss Alan as much as I miss Chris and Neil. We lost another great musician. May God rest his soul.

I really appreciate this post because I have pretty much the exact same opinions about Alan's drumming, (he is also my second favorite drummer behind Peart.) But what I really miss is him as a high quality human. I was introduced to Alan in 2007 by my friend Roger Fisher of Heart. I had many great times with Alan, mostly at Rog's house or at different events around the Seattle area. (I live 20 minutes away from both of their homes.) When I first met him I was just trying so hard to be cool and not to act like a "fan" because he was such a hero of mine. (I play drums and thats how I met Rog.) But Alan was such a humble and giving person and he would always indulge our requests for his memories of crazy adventures with various English drummer mates and would regale us with amazing stories of nights out with various Beatles, Bonzos and Moons. (The story abouthim flying to NY to play with John Lennon and Eric Clapton in the Plastic Ono Band on less than 24 hours notice and learning the songs on the plane is a classic tale!) But he was more happy to discuss gardening with my sister. My family and I went to the 2013 Rock n Roll HOF induction to watch Roger be inducted and to see the original Heart lineup perform for the first time in 35 years. (And also to watch my favorite band, Rush, be inducted as well.) As we were in line waiting to get into the Nokia Theatre, who just happened to be in line behind us with all the other common folk? Yep. Alan. He could have used his clout to avoid the line and hung out with the rock stars. But that wasn't him. I really miss him a lot.

I am a 40 plus-year Rush fan that became a Rush fan because of the 'Signals' album (A MASTERPIECE in EVERY WAY!!). That was 1982, and although I had HEARD of Rush before that (Duh! 'Moving Pictures' came out the year before!) I needed 'Signals' as a doorway into the Rush 'Club', if you will! The next year, 1983, I found in '90125' the Yes 'DOORWAY' I needed, and I just love that album. Rush is, and will always be TIED for #1 with the BEATLES, but I love YES too... and Alan White was in the PLASTIC ONO BAND as well! Rush fan for YES!! R.I.P. Alan White! You were a BADASS!! Say hello to NEIL for me! OUT!!

@@AllAboutRush Sorry it took me a minute. I was a young singer in 1981 when 'Moving Pictures' came out, so I was listening to 'Singing Groups' then and Rush sounded like any other 'HARD ROCK' band to me. But the next year my Dad bought me 'Signals' for my birthday. I listened to it because I felt it was disrespectful not to. I hadn't heard a song on it before then. The second I heard the opening salvo of Keyboards at the beginning of 'Subdivisions' I was MEZMORIZED!! 'Signals' was the first Album I EVER listened to that I liked EVERY song on the record the first time I heard it!

All the guys in YeS were Beatles fans .
Alan was roommates with Eddie Offord
Eddie was their Engineer and in the words of
Jon Anderson ... the 6th YeS member
Not only had Alan already played with
John Lennon and George Harrison but also
Clapton , Joe Cocker Ginger Backer as well
    Between Jon and Chris...
    the Beatles factor was enough.
he can do it !! They said.

I subscribe to your AAR Channel because of this Alan White video. I’m a huge Yes and Alan White fan and just for good measure I’m a huge Rush fan. You are one of the few people I’ve heard say something I’ve been saying for years - that Alan white is one of the best drummers ever and terribly under appreciated. I agree with every word you said to the letter but let me as one thing; pop music and even hop of the 80s and beyond were all influenced to some degree by one gigantic, hit Owner of a Lonely Heart and Alan’s steering funk laced tour de force performance on that song! I love that he’s the same guy who played Sound Chaser and Instant Karma!
I met him briefly after a show at the Forum in LA during the Big Generator tour with his wife and kids just before they climbed into the limo and Alan was indeed the nice guy you think he is. He stopped, talked to me for a moment and went on with his family.
One last thing- a few weeks before he died I tweeted to his account how amazing and underrated he is. I just hope his account manager shared that with him.
Thank you for posting this awesome video. I war h more of your work! Note: though I have massive love for Alan and Neal, I’m a guitarist! 😄🎸

Technically there are many drummers "better" than Bonham. That being said, NOBODY was as creative, or put the perfect groove for every turn he played on. Same with Copeland. I can't see how Peart, or anyone in Rock can be put on the same level as Bonham.

    • @AllAboutRush

All of the drummers you mention in your comment I like better than Bonham, and not just for technical reasons. I think Peart was WAY more creative than Bonham, and perhaps that’s more required in a progressive rock-type setting. That’s my opinion. I saw Neil 6 or 7 times between 1979 and 1987. I saw Yes with Alain about 7 times too between 1980 and 2004, Bruford 3 times with King Crimson, 2 times with Moraz, twice with Earthwork and once at a drum clinic. I also saw Bozzio (with UK and solo) Palmer (with ELP once and with Asia twice) Collins with Genesis and Barlow from Tull a few times each. Although different in style, all of those are technically as good as Neil, and some of them may even be more versatile and creative. I won’t even mention some incredible jazz drummer I’ve heard or seen. As much as i love Neil, i consider that he is part of an elite club, but that he isn’t the president of the club.
