"Am I Only Dreaming?" is a Metropolis Street Racer song that I honestly believed for a while was an actual song from the world of pop music that was a moderate hit on Canadian radio in the early-through-mid 1990s and not just something that Richard Jacques composed specifically for the MSR soundtrack.

the reflections on the Dreamcast are fantastic, on the PS2 there is no reflection on the rear window, I noticed that in the Dreancast version the car's movement is smoother and with more frames.

@acwbit2368 not really, while the ps2 has lots of hardware effects when it comes to raw power the ps2 is one of the worst in it's generation, even gamecube is actually stronger and it's the reason why nintendo keep using the same hardware for their wii just a little bit upgraded
(And I said this as strictly ps2 kid)
But ngl part what makes the ps2 sold way more is just the crazy amount of games it had and also the DVD feature which was big back then

    • @volkte37
      @volkte37 3 місяці тому +25

@@blueelectric05 it's insane you think that. Pushing and steaming polygons was a major PS2 feat. All 4 consoles have strengths and weaknesses that generation. Also 18 months between DC and PS2 and 18 more months between PS2 and GCN/Xbox. Of course there will be differences but PS2 was far from weak.

Funny how colors are far better on Dreamcast... I wonder if it's because of the Kyro GPU... The only advantage of the PS2 version is drawn distance, but Dreamcast looks better in every other aspect, and has a far better frame rate as well.

The Dreamcast version ""looks"" more beautiful due to the color, but it has a lot of flaws. You only saw more vivid colors and the false reflection lighting in the car, but you didn't even see that on the PS2 we have a superior field of vision and dynamic lighting (pay attention when the car passes under the light and then in the dark area) What if If it weren't for the color of the car, you certainly wouldn't have the same opinion. Even though it ''"looks"" more beautiful on the Dreamcast, it still loses to the PS2 version, which is employing more techniques and dynamic details.

It's not a Kyro, Kyro is the PowerVR3, the DC has a PowerVR2.
The PowerVR2 on the PC market was named Neon 250. It had poor drivers but with well optimized games like Quake 3 it competed with the Voodoo 3.
Btw it shows that Sega probably made the right choice chosing Videologic's PowerVR2 instead of the 3Dfx's solution Sega America wanted. The american project was probably going to use the Voodoo Banshee, which is twice slower than a Voodoo 3.

    1. I'll take the TXR2 Dreamcast controller layout over the TXRZ on PS2's layout. I prefer the Right trigger and analog setup. Not to mention those early PS2 Dual Shock 2 controllers have the pressure sensitive face buttons.
    2. No auto licenses but the cars match their real world counterparts. Mazda RX-7 and Toyota AE86. Reminds me of the awesome battle in the Initial D manga.

Not sure how many people noticed this, but there was car fatigue so to speak in the PS2 version, meaning after extensive period of driving the same car it would lose some power and acceleration would suffer. Dreamcast looks overall better with improved color saturation (PS2 looks very dull) AA, and cleaner ground textures. Now, the PS2 loading times is much better and I thought the FMV looked better on the PS2 as well, DC was abit grainy. The DC also sounds louder, not surprised as the Yamaha chip I think had additional 16 channels. Not sure what else advantage it had, but I've heard several DC games sound better than the PS2. Not much, but there's a difference. Besides the loading times, visually and from an audio perpective, I give it to the DC.

The overall image is sharper/cleaner with better colors on Dreamcast. The PS2 seems to have a bit more detailed and visible background and environments but the cars look softer and the colors and lighting are not nearly as nice to look at. The PS2 game has a much more "depressed" and "artificial" cg look to it with it's darker and more matte style coloring on the car. The Dreamcast has a nicer eye popping shiny reflectivity like you would expect from a clean car passing under highway street lights and the overall ambiance of it looks and feels closer to real night time city driving. Dreamcast game also has less "jaggies" aka better antialiasing along the edges of everything. The one lighting effect I find nicer on the PS2 release is the wispy trail tail light effect when the cars rear swerves around. However Dreamcast version has a similar effect but instead of from the car lights it's on all the street lights as they pass by overhead.

Many comments here claiming they see more polygons in the PS2 version are evidence of Sony's effective marketing. In practice, the two consoles are very similar. The better resolution of the DC just makes it easier to see polygon edges. Comparing the two frame by frame, there are no real differences in this respect.
However, the differences in texture resolution are very clear. The PS2 version has significantly lower resolution textures due to the lack of hardware texture compression.

@@juststatedtheobvious9633 You perfectly demonstrate how such misconceptions arise and persist. You can't simply compare theoretical figures from completely different architectures and draw relevant conclusions from them. The theoretical number of polygons of the PS2 is higher, but due to the architecture, the VideoLogic graphics chip of the DC is more efficient in drawing polygons and prevents overdrawing. This means that the PS2 will draw polygons that are further away and then paint over them again with polygons that are further forward, thus wasting them. The result in real world games is that you will see a very similar number of polygons on the screen although the technical figures suggest otherwise to the non-technical reader. In addition, Sony's advertising focused heavily on the theoretical polygon performance because that was the only number that was supposedly much better than the DC. But in real games, there's not much difference. Exceptions would be games that only use wireframes, for example, and no shading, lighting or texturing. But how many games do that?

    • @bizarroeddie1
      @bizarroeddie1 3 місяці тому

PS2 was pushing more polygons than Dreamcast out of the box. Take a look at the sports games like NFL 2k2 from Sega themselves.
If they were so similar Sega wouldn't go the extra mile to tweak the geometry this time, something that wasn't the case in most DC to PS2 games.
DC has way better image quality but i much rather have better geometry and lighting than the slightly blocky models and flat lighting that's characteristic from Dreamcast games.

This is an interesting comparison. This is one of the pairs of comparable games on DC and PS2 in which some would say that the DC's hardware has been pretty much peaked, while the developers started to dig deep into the PS2's hardware. Here, while we can see the Dreamcast's usual pros, like the reduced aliasing, generally better textures, and more vibrant imagery, we can also see the PlayStation 2's pros, like the higher fillrate/draw distance, more polygons, and better/more consistent lighting. Saying which looks better is about as subjective as it could possibly be. On the DC, I love the glossy look on the vehicles, the smoother texturing, and the addition of traffic for filling up the more vibrant scene. But, on the PS2, I love the enhanced draw distance and lighting, and more accurate reflection mapping, which can even be found on certain windows on buildings.
I do think people need to chill out when agruing which of these two look better, though I can empathize on both sides. But either way, is it not a safe bet that TXR 0 is showing more graphical fidelity than TXR 2 overall? The increased draw distance is one thing, but the variety of lighting and reflections is very striking, though I don't really mess with the shading on the car when it's in a tunnel. Looks off. The lighting and reflections may be establishing the PS2's better memory capacity, like how there are no short pauses (as far as I know) to load each time you drive long enough, unlike in TXR 2, though at the same time, it is impressive how short the loading is.

Both are very good options for anyone who wants to play this saga... Excellent chapter of VCDecide, greetings and thank you! ❤

Lighting? What lighting? The DC has no realtime lighting. The reflections look terrible. The Ps2 has much better REALTIME lighting and reflections

Eh. The PS2 has more technically demanding lighting that sacrifices style and aesthetic for a crude stab at actually placing the car in the environment.
The Dreamcast version looks like it belongs in an ad, no matter what else is happening. The focused art direction helps the visuals age better, just like Outrun still looks better than Ridge Racer 64.

Played both on real hardware yesterday so the timing of this video is great.
They are both fantastic games, though the PS2 game is better overall due to better AI in races.
DC has a nice bright palette, smooth image and its own cool touches, especially the amazing replays. Those car reflections are cool but don't match at all to the action.
PS2 has a more muted look but amazing use of light and draw distance.
Both are 60fps but Dreamcast slows down a lot, which is a shame.
Neither game has anti aliasing. PS2 game is jaggy because of the early issues with field rendering which were fixed pretty quickly. AA didn't really happen back this gen, it was a flicker filter which softened the image.
Both games are among my favourites. PS2 is the better overall package though and the best game in the entire series.
