    Absolutely insane that Hornby's DP1 will be £20 less at the retailers for a DCC ready version than a full blown O gauge 66! I know which one will be better value for money...

    Well, that was a mouth full and is saturated with exciting news all around. All the manufacturers are stepping up to the plate and swigging for the bleachers. I take it the unacceptable manufacturer was in China and suspect that the future will be interesting with a move to India or Mexico but I'm guessing and trying to be the Devil's advocate, what fun, lol. I commend you on your delivery and verbal skills because I would have had a number of eh, ahh, and dead airtime. It does amaze me how you rattle that stuff off and wonder how many takes are involved but I don't see any seams, so I have to assume it just flows. Anyway, great video as always, Jersey Bill

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  3 місяці тому

      haha it sure was a mouth full! Yes I think the manufacturer will have been in China as most of Dapol's models do seem to be made there, and I assume their replacement factory will also be in China but we'll see! haha yeah - I'm not as great at delivery as I may seem... I'm an editor more than anything else... but I'm better than I was with practice haha! Thanks a lot Bill!

    The T3 was definitely the most exciting reveal. We all sort of knew it would happen after the return to steam, and I’m interested to see if we get both LSWR pea green and mint & chocolate as livery options. It would also be nice if it was available at Locomotion Models, even if it isn’t part of the collection anymore.

      @@joshslater2426 Going by the logic of a recent return to steam another model that would be great to have is a rerelease of the bachmann A2 as Blue Peter as that has recently just come back after a very long overhaul.

  • @Simon-Davis
    @Simon-Davis 3 місяці тому +11

    While prices continue to rocket, at least we still aren't even close to European levels of cost. I returned from Berlin last week, and visited a few model shops while over there. Low budget coaches at the equivalent of £60 each? Or detailed coaches with lights fitted for £120? 3 coach DC DMU for £600 or with DCC sound at £800? It puts our prices into perspective when you see what prices are like elsewhere.

    • @JP_TaVeryMuch
      @JP_TaVeryMuch 3 місяці тому +4

      They do things differently over there, don't they?
      The hobby is firmly anchored in the pockets of late middle aged and retired men.
      I have family in Hamburg ~ MiniaturWonderland land olé! and found it easier to introduce the boys to our wonderful world by filling my suitcase with Hornby kid-friendly products (and a couple of pairs of socks for me) rather than try to stomach the sight of a €500 german loco steaming off the edge of a baseboard. This despite the pitying "tuts" from the otherwise friendly bloke behind the counter in the local train shop.

    • @eisenbau
      @eisenbau 3 місяці тому +1

      Well said. Moaning Brits don't know how well off they are, and the one thing Sam omits is the fact that Hornby are losing money hand over fist, as well as the fact they are no more expensive than Bachmann. But then again, he's got it in for Hornby, whereas Dapol, Rapido and Accurascale, no matter what garbage they produce, nearly always get more positive comments-

    • @JP_TaVeryMuch
      @JP_TaVeryMuch 3 місяці тому +5

      @@eisenbau Sam's dismay with Hornby is not unique to him. We long-standing fans of model railways in Britain have no more hair to tear out at the incomprehensible actions of Hornby Hobbies in the past several years. It's a wonder that the 'going concern' is still going, what with the company's seeming love of shooting itself in the foot time and again!

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  3 місяці тому +4

      Yeah European prices are crazy - but any British manufacturer charging those prices would just be squashed by the competition... we're comparatively lucky over here that our industry is so competitive!

    I remember being on Kings Cross station when the original Deltic arrived, resplendent in blue with cream lining.

    Excellent video, Sam. Saw a video of the T3 running earlier this year, and thought Hornby could make a model of it. Funny how Bachmann beat them to it lol. Here’s hoping they get the green right cause Lord knows Hornby can’t be consistent haha.
    Glad to see that the H/Y7 will be released soon, with no news of the Stirling Single. The more space between these releases, the better.
    No one was going to enjoy the Hornby price increases, but the fact not all models are affected intrigues me. After watching this, I looked up the Mallard Record Breaker set on Rails, and the price doesn’t seem to have changed at all. Very pleased with this.

  • @lindaoffenbach
    @lindaoffenbach 3 місяці тому +4

    Hi Sam. H's Deltic looks fabulous in all metal for that price. That's simply staggering surprising they even can pull it off for that amount, putting it into European continental perspective. Of course quality in the end has always been the question in the case of H, but the construction in all die-cast does look most impressive. Cheerio.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  3 місяці тому

      It does indeed Linda - the quality is still the big question mark, but European prices aren't really a good demonstration of what's possible for a certain budget... British companies like Accurascale can much better show what's possible for, say £170, so with a budget like H's for the Deltic, it *should* be damn good!
      Thanks for watching, Sam :)

    • @lindaoffenbach
      @lindaoffenbach 3 місяці тому

      @@SamsTrains Let's keep fingers crossed Sam that it is going to be really stellar. The best demonstration of what British companies can do would be Bachmann probably. They apparently also include QA which all of the others clearly lack. Only B seems to be able a to offer a consistent flawless RTR experience. All the other always have issues, or at the least with a high chance. Depends on the buyer. On the continent we just do not accept any flaw, which does drive the price up, keeping production in Europe with PIKO as the exception; all run by German management, even in China in the case of PIKO.

    I ordered the Dublo Deltic DP1 when it was first announced. Looking at the photos on the Engine Shed I'm glad I did it was £332 for the sound version. Assuming they honour that price, I thinks it's good value for an all metal loco with DCC controlled fans etc.
    It has more diecast than my Trix ,Brawa, Roco Ho collection which all have plastic bogies. The somewhat dated wagons and locos made in Switzerland by HAG are all diecast and expensive.

    You say beginners will be "slapped in the face" when they graduate up from the entry train sets, but this has always been the case. At Christmas 2001 when I first began collecting, the Flying Scotsman train set was available from the Littlewoods Index catalogue for £99.99. Loco, 3 coaches, controller, oval of track and a siding. For my birthday in the January immediately following, I looked at buying an A4, but the RRP at this time was £84.99. Entry level sets will always be loss leaders - they could have a decent margin on them because they will be produced in higher volumes (guaranteed sellers), but are clearly priced at close to cost in order to get people into the hobby. There's nothing new in that.

    Hi Sam, the Dapol O gauge 66 I have on preorder and I have also upgraded it for the Super sound version. There are some very interesting things/ features in your video so I will be saving it, one other item is the Hornby prototype DELTIC and I just love the model and livery. But will I want to pay that price, many years ago I bought a conversion kit for the Lima green livery MELD and I still have it today. I painted it in the English Electric blue as I thought it appropriate. I even ran it last week on my Club night. Regards from Ron 🚂👍😃🚂

    I'm in for the Manning Wardle, hoping Rapido would not botch the whole manufacturing process. Same with the Y7, LNER fan inside ! and I'm in for the S160, comparison with my Roco Italian one incoming !
    Hats off to Dapol to be straightforward with their problems with the Class 66. What they do should be the standard in the industry. Rapido is not bad at this kind of communication too.
    Mmmmmm... I've already have the 57xx by Bachmann, but the Accurascale model taunts me... Why not ? I'll see your review of her before taking my decision.
    Hornby : "Let's shot ourselves in the foot ! Where is the .50 HMG ?"... If they want to price like Germans, you should have the same quality as Germans. My last buy is a BR 42 by Trix, costing around 430 €/GBP 400, the equivalent of the LNER P2 in configuration (2-8-2 tender but a freight engine), and I might someday made a direct comparison between both, the P2 taunts me...

    A good video here Sam, some great articles covered, my main purchase this month was some hornby premium range pullmans, I have altogether managed to get 10 of them which also include some of the more unique ones like the New Century Bar and Devon Belle observation car
    One model I hope to have soon is my bullied Leader from KR models, according to KR the shipping of that mode from china is not to long now so hopefully will have that at some point before the end of this year.
    Might look at the London transport pannier from accurascale as it’s a livery that does look very good on them and currently I don’t have a pannier tank at all.

    It's not just the high prices that stops someone like myself getting into the hobby. I just want to mention as someone only in the last month that has thought about buying something from scratch only to discover that nothing is available to buy that would interest me a deltic a class 37 class 33 all sold out. Accurascale sells out on its pre-orders almost immediately, what the hell. Even in Australia Auscision is the same you have to wait months for anything such as their N class locomotive. I'd say no availability is affecting sales more as I have discovered this new form of retail where things are only made to order is weighted against the customer. Why can't Accurascale see the demand and make as many models as required, but they don't even do that, they close orders to when many more people would chosen to buy the product.

    Oh, ye gods of all stars, those Hornby prices are ... multiple expletives deleted ...
    When that all die cast Deltic was announced, after the price hikes on other models, my first thought was "bet this drives a tank battalion through the £500 barrier". As a result, £349 doesn't sound too bad, IF of course it lives up to the billing, but it'll have to offer a LOT for that money.
    The other thought about that die cast Deltic being, of course, "will it break the 1 kg barrier mass wise?" Will this be the first time Sam's Trains conducts locomotive mass tests on a weighbridge? Especially with it being a Deltic, which is going to be a heavy beast even when built in conventional style, but all die cast? I'll bet that thing hits 1,200 grams when it's finally in Sam's hands, and it'll need a beast of a motor to propel that mass if so. Or possibly two motors, one for each bogie. Imagine that mechanism ... two 5 pole motors, each with its own flywheel and all metal gears ... and if it's as heavy as I predict, it'll need them ...
